This place ruined our Christmas eve dinner! I ordered a Filipino feast for our Christmas eve dinner 2 days prior to pick-up and paid $183 upfront. My husband and I would be sharing this meal with my daughter, my sister-in-law and her husband. When I arrived to pick up my order, I was matter-of-factly told that someone accidentally picked up my order by mistake a few minutes before I arrived and that they had nothing else to replace my order! On Christmas eve! I had guests coming in 1/2 hour and no food to serve! They did not show any remorse at all. And another family is enjoying my Christmas dinner because they did not care about the consequence of their action. So this place has been in the Orange Mall for years and I've never bothered to try it. I don't know why...I guess the thought of eating Filipino food scared me. They serve some weird looking stuff there. Anyway, on Sunday we decided to give it a shot. FYI---this is the only food court restaurant left in the whole mall. Orange Mall has been kicking everyone out. Subway was the last to go. First off, the owners have personalities of fish. They look angry and never have smiles on their faces. They seem like they hate their life. BTW - There is a sign that says they take credit cards, but then another sign that says "CASH ONLY." Um, confusing much? So basically you can only eat here if you have cash, so bring a wad of money or you will get very red and angry emoticons from these owners when you say you have to cancel order because you didn't know they only take cash. I ordered egg rolls and my husband got the chicken on a stick with white rice. The egg rolls were tiny but tasty. The chicken on the stick was really, really delicious. We were totally surprised. The rice was meh. Tasted like something I make at home. Had no flavor and it wasn't super soft or sticky like most cooked Asian rice is. I will pass on that next time. Honestly, the food may seem a little intimidating because it's not something you're used to, or that it might look odd, but most of it is pretty tasty stuff. I like to stick to the things I know such as beef caldereta, adobo, and sinigang. All of these items are easy to like because they're made up of a stew-ish consistency and sinigang is like a tangy soup, sometimes with short ribs. I'm very surprised that despite all of the changes that have occurred within the Orange Mall that the Fil-Am BBQ spot has endured all sorts of different changes. They must be doing something right even though they have a rude lady. wow this was bad. I have been to a lot of Pilipino joints in the past and this may have been the worst one yet. Also before you go jumping on me about not knowing what I am talking about since Pilipino grub is a bit different, know the following, the munchkin is half pinay, I have spent several months in the PI, and I have grubbed at a large number of Pilipino joints around OC and LA, granted most were before I started writing reviews. Let alone my former mother in law was a phenomenal cook and created better food than most of the Pilipino restaurants that I have ever been to. And the bad stuff... * Just because its on the menu doesn't mean you can order it * The pancit noodles were not very good * The bbq pork was extremely fatty (30-40%) and had a bit of gristle * One skewer is a single item for the combo plates The good stuff... * The owner who was working the counter was very conversational and a nice guy * The bbq chicken was good (I had never had a bbq chicken skewer for Pilipino food before) * The bbq pork tasted great (where there was meat) Overall it just was not worth it IMHO and I don't think I will be going back. Good homemade Filipino food, BUT seriously needs to work on customer service really bad O_o. I read reviews about a "rude lady" that yelpers were calling. I walked up to the counter. I saw 2 ladies working behind the counter. One saw me, but continued with what they were doing. No biggie, I had to look at the menu anyway. 5 minutes later, I waved my hand at one of the ladies and they looked away. Hmmm....so I said "hello po, I'm ready to order". At the same time, the phone rang. A lady came out and answered the phone in front of me. I am not making this up, but this lady stayed talking on the phone for a good 5 minutes with an annoyed face and uninterested attitude with whoever she was talking to. After she was done talking, she just looked at me and did not even apologize for making me wait. So I used my charm...I said "tita, kamusta po, are you okay?" (tita means auntie and kamusta means hello) and her annoyed face turned into a smile O_o. I think we just made a connection lol. But then she went on a mini rant on her problems with some customers calling asking for a discount on orders and what not. She was very negative. Omg Now I can see why people would find her rude. But I stayed listening and we actually had a decent convo. Onto the food, I had 1 combo of CALDERETA (rich beef stew) and 1 combo of DINUGUAN (pork blood stew) with a side of white rice and 1 PORK BBQ stick to go. Eveything was amazing! Portions were generous with huge chunks of meat and just a lil bit of fat. Dinuguan was very rich and had the right amount of vinegar. Reminded me of my moms cooking. I'd love to say their food is good, but they gave me zero chance to try it. I placed an order with them and it went through the system just fine, but after an hour and a half (yes, you read that right, AN HOUR AND A HALF) they left me a message saying that my order could not be fulfilled because the mall they are in is closed at 7. I also had 2 skewers of BBQ Chicken and Pork. What I liked Garlic Fried Rice What I didn't like What you get for the price you pay. They are on the high end. If you are used to the prices and quantity of filipino food in West Covina and Cerritos you will be disappointed BBQ Skewers were so sweet they were sticky. They were also served cold as they had it premade sitting at room temp. What I hated That they would serve my coworker and I burnt longaniza (see my pics). We had a total of 12 between the both of us. 8 looked like the picture I submitted. I always get their poor boy meal which is rice and 2 bbq sticks. You can substitute the white rice for fried rice for no extra cost. They also give you a bowl of broth on the side. The bbq sticks are pretty good. They reheat the meat once you order so the food is nice and hot. The meal is also a good price for what you get. They also have a good variety of food and it all looks fresh. The 3 stars is due to the poor service. The lady who works here (I think she's the owner) is super unfriendly! She's rude and seems to hate being here. Half of the experience is the service and I really dread having to order from her. Wish she would greet her customers or smile once in awhile! read more

This place is top notch from the quality of their food to their service to their pricing. Not sure what all the bad reviews about the lady are about. This is a small mom and pop restaurant who have put their heart and soul into food that represents their heritage. Also, this has been a tough year for restaurants, can they catch a break? If it's the food you are new to, be open and willing to try and you can be surprised. This family has always been generous and we try to patronize their business as often as we can. We had initially expected an actual Fil-Am restaurant, and were disappointed that it was just a food court place. This is a primary example of looks can be deceiving. $3.99 for 2 sticks of pork or chicken BBQ and rice! $1.50 per BBQ stick! Can't beat those prices. Next is taste - the pork BBQ was delicious! Great food and a little bit too earnest service. I stood in front of the Fil-Am reading the food options and one of the guys acknowledged my interest which I thought was cool. Indeed I was interested. I ordered the pork adobo and rice. I asked about the pork sausage and before I knew it he was putting it on the to go box with the rest of my food. He also assumed I wanted a drink. I asked for a coconut juice after he had already prepared a coke cup for me. Ooook.... The meal turned out to be a little over 9$ thanks to the expensive coconut juice. Too much for fast food really. I actually did want the sausage so he kind of read my mind but on the other hand I was about to not order it. Oh well.... Out of politeness I took the sausage and coconut juice when I was fully intending to just get water. Jedi mind tricks I guess! The adobo was delicious but maybe the pork could have been a little softer. Just a little. The rice was unevenly cooked. Some of it was nice and some was too moist and squishy. I crave Filipino delicious-ness from time to time. I believe many of the drawbacks folks are lamenting about is that it is mostly heat lamp food. However, I came here on a couple of occasions and the food was a rave. Not too salty, just good cuisine. I find the best time to go to this food court joint is right before the big lunch and dinner rush where food is freshly made and piping hot. Otherwise, the food is mediocre at best. Filipino food, mind you is gout and diabetes inducing. I enjoy the less salty versions of Filipino cuisine. Folks are always used to pancit, adobo, but be adventurous and try eggplant with scrambled egg, chayote with chicken or sinigang with pork and bok choy. Other entrees to sample is the stuffed bangus with tomatoes and onions (milkfish -national fish of the Philippines) It really hits the comfort food spot for me. I used to eat here at least once a week for work. I've only ordered the budget meal of 2 BBQ sticks and rice and it's my favorite!! Oh man the sweet and sour sauce that they dip it in right before they serve it to you is amazing and truly unique. I've never tasted a bbq skewer like it. I prefer the chicken skewer just because its less fat and I get half white rice and half fried rice. I like the fried rice by itself and the white rice with the skewers. I think there's too much flavor if I eat the bbq chicken with the fried rice. I'm giving them 3 stars because the workers there are sometimes a little rude. The older guy makes it a huge deal when I ask for a cup of water and my receipt. Plus, their rice isn't consistent. Sometimes it's fresh and amazing then there are other times when you can tell its been sitting out for hours. When I read the five reviews that gave this place 4.5 stars, I was pretty excited to try Fil-Am BBQ Grill. But when I got there, I wondered if I was at the right place. Just looking at the food displayed, the dinugaun looked muddy in the warming tray and fat was pooling on the surface of most of the other warming trays... looked nothing like pictures on Yelp. Granted the lady that took my order was very friendly and took the time to tell me what each dish was. That kind of service is RARE for a Filipino restaurant. Being Filipino and pretty good cook myself, I can usually tell how good a Filipino restaurant is by their Kare Kare. If the place takes the time to make a good Kare Kare, they probably put the same effort into their other dishes. The Kare Kare was tasteless and the meat was hard and chewy... no hint of peanut in the sauce. It was just a lumpy, greyish "gravy" that desperately needed Bagaoong. The pork tocino and binagoongang baboy (very greasy) was just okay. Finally, the reason why I gave Fil-Am BBQ Grill only two stars... the rice was warm, very dry and just didn't taste right. When eating Filipino food, the rice has got to be moist and hot! Even mediocre Filipino food (or any asian food) is enjoyable if the rice is cooked properly. Otherwise, what's the point... you might as well just eat a sandwich. But the 30 minutes stretched to almost an hour , food came one by one with interval of 15 minutes each.
