Updating my review for Hawaiian King Barbecue because we've been coming here more often & it just keeps getting better. This place is honestly amazing. The food is always fresh, flavorful & super consistent. You can really tell it's a family owned spot that takes pride in what they serve. The owner is so kind & welcoming. She even recognized my husband & gave him a free drink which was such a sweet gesture & really meant a lot to us. It's the little things like this that make you want to keep coming back. We love supporting local businesses especially ones that have been around for years & this is definitely one of those places that deserves it. Plus it's super close to us which makes it even better. My tongue is inflamed heavily from old oil. It's a typical Hawaiian BBQ except the food is so bad I took a bite of everything I had and right away must SPIT my food. I'm not one to ever waste food. At first our order was rushed and because so, incorrect. We ordered a chicken katsu and seafood/bbq platter. Since it was rushed, they only put in the seafood platter no bbq. The breading on the fish was burnt and absolutely soaked in oil 30% breading. 60% oil and 10% fish is what they serve here. The shrimp had no flavor and too funky to eat. Either frozen or reheated old food The chicken was so dry, pulling it apart was comparable to trying to break a living tree branch. This dirty shop needs to close down ASAP. Been here years ago and it's just not the same. I saw others throw away their food and not finish it either. I had the audacity to speak up about my plate. read more

I liked:White Fish This was ok: BBQ Short Ribs Shrimp Tried a new place that was just okay overall. The white fish was the best thing we had. Good flavor, solid crisp, and clearly made fresh since it came out piping hot. The BBQ short ribs were a bit burnt and didn't fall off the bone, plus they were thin with not much meat. Shrimp was fine but lacked flavor and crisp. Portions are on the smaller side compared to places like L&L, so it's hard to see the value. Service was nice. It was a slow time when we visited, so they brought the food out to our table, which was a thoughtful touch. No complaints on that front. The interior is pretty standard for a small local spot, but it felt a little grimy. It's clearly a no-frills, budget-friendly setup. read more

I needed to find a place that offered medium sized catering trays. Hawaiian King offers 2 size options of catering/party trays while most of the other restaurants only had large trays catered to 20+ people minimum. I planned a birthday gathering of 10-12 guests and our order was more than enough food for everyone with plenty of leftovers. It was tasty too. The staff were super friendly and accommodating as well. They had my order ready on time when I arrived to pick it up. The owner even offered to help us take it out to our car. I ordered Regular sized catering trays off their menu which they say is enough for 10 people. 1 Hawaiian BBQ chicken tray, 1 BBQ short rib tray, and 1 macaroni salad. They packed the macaroni salad tray! Everyone took a takeout box of that home after the party haha The meat was tender and flavorful. Both trays also had a layer of steam cabbage underneath. So nice to have to vegetables with our protein! They provided 2 large containers of teriyaki bbq sauce. We ordered spam musubi and they were individually wrapped. They also had a good ratio of spam and rice. I didn't feel cheated on spam slices like other Hawaiian bbq places recently. I will definitely come back in the future if I'm craving Hawaiian bbq :) read more

I've reviewed this place a couple times and it needs an update. First, the place is convenient if you're in the area, next to a Target, Ross, Post Office and a few other stores (and a chiropractor), though the shopping center is usually crowded and parking is pretty packed. Inside there is enough space for a few tables to eat at, and there are painted Hawaiian murals along the walls. I recognized the 7 Sacred Pools on Maui and Diamondhead on Oahu. This place seems to be primarily take-out, however, and you can call and place an order in advance. It usually takes about 15 minutes to prepare my order. My +1 and I usually get the same things. I like the #7 combo plate with barbecue chicken and barbecue beef, which comes with 2 scoops of rice and a scoop of macaroni salad. It's pretty filling. Sometimes I go for the seafood combo and order it with short ribs, which are delicious. My +1 usually gets the mini chicken katsu meal, but if she's really hungry she'll order the loco moco, which is decent and filling. Every now and then we'll add some spam musubi, which is a pretty good deal. The place has risen it's prices quite a bit over the past few years (which was the main complaint of my last review) but no more/less than other places so perhaps I was a little quick to be critical. Inflation being what it is, we still try to support local businesses like this one as much as we're able. read more

I came here on a Tuesday evening, at least within the last hour before they closed. The ambiance is not as vibrant or inviting and the restaurant was not spotless. I was hungry, so I ordered a barbecue chicken plate. The cashier on duty was not friendly and it seemed like they were ready to go home. I also noticed that upon closing, she just grabbed her taro boba drink to go and left without assisting her co-workers clean the restaurant. My order was ready within 7 to 10 minutes. The steamed rice was perfectly cooked and the macaroni salad was quite tasty. The grilled barbecue chicken was not spectacular. It was quite tender but disappointing because it kinda burnt and I only tasted a watery Hawaiian barbecue sauce. Honestly, I am disappointed by the cashier's unprofessional attitude, the lack of cleanliness at this restaurant and the subpar food quality. read more

Came here today with my fiancée, ordered a chicken katsu. The rice was ok and the macaroni salad was as well however, the chicken katsu was so dry... it tasted like it was deep fried multiple times. Another negative point was the cashier, she was so unwelcoming... she didn't greet and even when I was leaving and said have a good day she just gave me a blank stare.
