I've eaten here a few time. The food is very American Chinese. I recommend the tofu and veggies, and kung pao chicken. Broccoli beef sometime the beef is a bit tough. I'm not into the creme cheese wonton. Orange chicken is too sweet for me but other people love this. Chow mein is sometime good and sometimes soggy but I will eat it anyways. Service is always friendly. They are always clean. Will be eating with Z in the future. read more

I had Z's Kitchen for dinner last night, and it's been nothing short of a nightmare since then. About an hour after eating, I started feeling awful--nauseous, sweaty, and with intense stomach pain that has kept me up all night. I've been absolutely miserable all through the night and am still struggling this morning. I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken with Beef and Broccoli, half fried rice, and half chow mein, and I honestly don't know what went wrong, but I feel horrible. The pain is so bad, I can barely walk, and I'm hunched over from discomfort. I even tried taking an Ex-Lax, hoping it would help get the food out of me, but so far, nothing's helped. At this point, I'm still in agony and considering whether I need to go to the emergency room. I won't be ordering from Z's Kitchen again after this experience--it's been the worst and most painful meal I've ever had. read more

I wanted some soup and I decided to try a new place. The wonton soup was different than what I was used to but it was pleasant. Their egg rolls was amazing! The quality is way better than the "regular" egg rolls other places offer. This has now become one of my "go-to" places if I want some soup or egg rolls and I have to try their other items as well. Tried it for the first time, I ordered the lunch specials of KungPao Chicken, Chowmein, Pepper Beef and Beef Pad Thai. Flavorless food.. KungPao Chicken- They are strips of chicken with a lot of onions and vegetables and it is not spicy at all it was flavorless Pepper Beef- Obviously it's peppered beef so it has a huge amount of pepper however once you eat the beef the texture of the beef is kind a different very soft like it's just been over cooked more than one time Pad Thai- I have had my fair share of this dish and let me tell you horrible.. In an area where there are as many Chinese quick service restaurants as there are Starbucks, it's important to find a unique way to draw people to your place. This place is kind of tucked into a corner and hard to see unless your driving east on Chapman Ave. Even then, you have to be looking for a restaurant to really notice it. When I pulled up around 1pm on a Saturday, there was only one other customer, but I was greeted immediately with a very friendly welcome. Not overly aggressive to immediately take my order, she let me peruse the menu until I was ready. The place is very clean and well decorated. In talking with the woman behind the counter, they've only been open since last summer and she said people are still finding them for the first time. I ordered the Orange Chicken, lunch portion (there's a dinner portion as well). She asked what kind of side dish I wanted, fried rice, white rice, chow mien, etc. I opted for white rice as I like simple foods. Total cost - $7. Not bad for what you get. I checked in on Yelp so received a free soft drink. My order was to go so I waited a nice oversized comfy chair until it was ready. They don't make the food until you order it. When I got home, the food was still hot and tasted excellent. They added veggies to the orange chicken which most places don't. The orange chicken was very moist. The portion size was perfect. Towards the bottom of the dish, the orange sauce had settled so it was a little to much for me. Probably wouldn't happen when eating in though. Overall, I rate it in between a traditional sit down Chinese restaurant and quick service pull from the pan place. I'll definitely eat here again when I'm in the area. I work at the park plaza in Irvine and they came to Fooda for their daily lunch menus. This has to be the worst preparation and the worst quality food I have ever had. The orange chicken did not taste like orange chicken, the food tasted like it came out of the freezer and it was warmed up to cold/lule wa lemon standards then smothered with orange chicken sauce. I love orange chicken and I get it from multiple restaurants but this restaurant has by far made me not like it and question how can you mess up orange chicken, due to the poor quality of food I don't recommend this restaurant to be vendors at other locations if it's going to taste like this. When we walked in, it was around 6pm and it was dead. The lady working the front had her back turned to us and she seemed to be staring at one of the many screens they have for online orders except... there were no orders for her to accept. They didn't have an option for a combo with those entrees specifically together but the lady made an exception for us anyway. I also asked her about checking in on Yelp to get that one can of free soda but she went ahead and also gave us two free soda cups! Way better than just a can. The main problem I had though was with the taste of the food. I've had way better tasting Chinese fast food from other places in Long Beach. Their orange chicken was okay. Most of the sauce was at the bottom underneath the pile of chicken and the chicken itself seemed a bit overcooked. The beef and broccoli was okay, pretty standard typical beef and broccoli. Now the usual highlight for me would be the chow mein, but not even that was to my liking. I had a few items delivered for dinner. First impression was great, each dish was packaged in those legit meal prep type containers. The portions were perfect and each was reasonably priced from $6-8 with a side of either rice or chow mein. Ordered: General Tso's chicken Sesame chicken Black pepper beef Tofu and veggies I decided on half chow mein, and the other white rice. My favorite was the sesame chicken, which came with steamed broccoli- it tasted the best but was a bit soggy from the steam. The tofu and veggies was light on the tofu which was a bummer. Black pepper beef was alright; the beef was a bit tough and didn't have very much flavor. The General Tso's is apparently their popular item, which is surprising since it was bland and came with raw picked ginger- curious addition. Nothing looked like the photos they posted on their Yelp page but that was expected. The rice was undercooked, but it could have been old since I ordered dinner a bit late around 8:30pm. Chow mein was great and was healthier than your typical fast food Chinese spot. It had very little oil and sauteed with plenty of veggies. If I'm ordering Chinese to-go again, I would consider Z's Kitchen. But the food is quite mediocre and flavorless. read more

Having only lived in Costa Mesa a few months it took me awhile to finally find a favorite go-to Chinese restaurant but I did w Z's kitchen. What I ordered is very fresh and tasty - not at all greasy either. They offer fantastic combo plates which let me have exactly what I wanted with out having to over order. I had walnut shrimp which is several large tempura shrimps and toasted walnuts - light sauce on entree but also a side sauce included so I can add more as I see fit - plus a side salad and shrimp chips. Awesomely satisfying food! Heck the tofu is outright SCRUMPTIOUS! My mom is picky with tofu but their Kung Pao tofu and it's gravy was my mom's favorite. I visited this place with my friends a few times and they're always super nice. I personally went for multiple servings. The Chinese/Thai fusion is a favorite for me! This place has a dining place but it is obvious that the business model is toward delivery service. While it serves typical Chinese American, with some traditional menu hidden here and there, their food felt higher class than your typical Chinese take out. The ingredients were better, the flavors were more rounded and not harsh, and the use of oil was not as liberal as a typical Chinese take out. I'd recommend this place over several other Chinese delivery services in the area. It is kind of a more convenient nicer option to not to go out and get food in a bad weather day like this. If you use a third party delivery service, make sure you check for coupons. And yes, ordering the available a side of Orange Chicken or a side of Chow Mein is always a tempting proposition . Isn't the point of ordering delivery... to avoid going to pick up the food yourself?! When I ordered for delivery today, the lady said that it would take about 40 mins because her drivers weren't back yet. I called 40 mins later to ask on the progress and she again said that her drivers weren't back yet. My issue was that she offered no solution at first. When I pressed her to see how long it would be... she didn't know. She told me that my food was ready and that it would be faster if I came to pick it up. What the?!? Had I not called.. our food would have been sitting there getting cold! So disappointed. We order from here all the time and now I'm going to have to find a new place. This is unacceptable. You shouldn't have took my order if you couldn't fill it OR you shouldn't have cooked the food ahead of time before knowing what time your drivers would be back. read more

This is a mom & pop Chinese restaurant. It seems they do more take out that dining in. I ordered through Yelp with no problems. They offer delivery, but we decided to go pick up ourselves. When we arrived, there was no one in the restaurant except the owners and their son. They were polite and had us sit down to wait. The food was ok. Nothing spectacular. The price was decent. I was sort of between 3 and 4 stars, but the black pepper beef was so good! I ordered the meal on DoorDash and was initially pretty disappointed when the food arrived- my drink (brown sugar milk tea) had spilled all over the bag. Not a great start. Then there was the meal itself, which was my black pepper beef and fried rice. The black pepper beef was delicious. Great quality, and super bold flavor. I would definitely order it again even though the menu had a lot of good options! The fried rice though was not up my alley at all. I wasn't a fan of the texture, and a little lacking on flavor. If that had been a main dish and not a side I would've been really disappointed, but there was plenty of the main dish so I can't complain too much. read more
