We've eaten here before, but hadn't been back for a number of years. They have okay comfort food, but I don't care for their ordering model as well as I did the Mongolian Grill, where you were provided some reference cards to make sure you got the basic ingredients right. Their Pad Thai was underwhelming . . . I must have forgotten to order some ingredient that makes it such good comfort food. It turned out pretty bland. Lea's Chicken Stir Fry with the red curry sauce and brown rice was under sauced, There wasn't enough liquid to coat all of the rice or impart enough curry flavor to the dish. I had the $2 tom kha; they call it spicy coconut, but even without a galanga leaf floating in it, you and I both know what this is. $2 for a BOWL? That is a damn fine deal for a bowl of soup. And that's the small! The big bowl must be the diameter of a medicine ball. Well, I'm converted, this place now ranks above Zen for me. I'd rate this place just notch above Panda Express when it comes to Asian food. It's an ok option if you're looking for a relatively quick meal, but you just have to expect going in that the sauces will be thick, starchy, and loaded with sodium and sugar. I tried their sesame chicken bowl yesterday and the only thing going for it was that there was a generous amount of chicken in it. But the sauce was overwhelmingly thick and sweet and the white rice was mushy. Also, the dish just seemed to be missing something. I actually filled out a comment card to suggest they add broccoli to this dish, which I believe would balance the meal out. I've had other things at Fire Bowl before that were better than the sesame chicken, like the Pad Thai. But even the better dishes here aren't anything to write home about. read more

The first time that I went to the Fire Bowl Cafe I was astounded that I left a what is technically a noodle restaurant so full. There is so much good to say about the place that its hard for not to give this one five stars. The Potstickers are excellent and I don't know where you will ever get a better bowl of Miso soup as far as the main menu all the sauces are excellent and at this point I've tried everything from the White Wine sauce to the fantastic Peanut sauce. The noodles seem fresh and I absolutely love the flat rice noodles with the peanut sauce. Another treat here is the Udon the Udon noodles at this restaurant are so hearty and good, these noodles are so awesome you can only eat one at a time. Do yourself a favor and have anything on the menu here you cant go wrong, If i could fault the place for anything its the seating. It seems to me like they try to fit far too many chairs into too small of a space. I could use some elbow room. But overall I'd say don't pass up an opportunity to eat here! read more

You end up with Thai lite, Chinese Lite, you get the idea. So the Pad Thai is tasty, but a little goopy. The coconut soup lacks the punch of a real Tom Ka Gai. Still, fast, cheap, consistent, and in my hood. I looooove the Vermicelli Singapore. I get it with shrimp and soft tofu. Fire bowl is one of the best "fast food" chains in Austin. So many people use fast food as an insult or to say that it is substandard. Fire bowl does the opposite for this term. The food is fast, this is true, and it is also delicious. The coconut lime soup is amazing, I cant say anything that hasn't already been said about this gorgeous concoction. The sweet, spicy, savoriness of it will have you craving it every time you walk in. My craving forces me to order the coconut lime soup when I go to Fire Bowl Cafe. The spring rolls are some of the biggest I have seen, they are fresh and satisfying. The different curry sauces are spicy and complex. Fire bowl is a great choice for takeout, but their service is also great. I have never had to wait long for my food and have always gotten service with a smile. Oh Fire Bowl, how I love thee. I used to drive from Riverside to get this stuff before I moved. They have some of the best Egg Rolls on the planet. Yeah, that's right. I said it. Spring Rolls aren't half bad either. The simple retail shopping area, quick turn-over restaurant always seems to have a good flow of people coming in. I've had their stir fry, fried rice, rolls, sweet/sour chicken and sesame chicken. Personal favorite being the sweet/sour chicken with brown rice. Awesome. Come for the Americanized Chinese Food, not the Thai food. Jeff K.'s review is pretty spot on of the Thai options at Fire Bowl. They are passable, but not preferrable. I usually go back and forth between the Pineapple Fried Rice and the Fire Bowl Fried rice. Last time I had the Sesame Chicken, and it was disappointing. It was basically dry fried chicken on a bed of bland white rice. I think there were a few sesame seeds on each piece, so I'm guessing that's how they are naming it, 'sesame chicken.' I've had the pad thai here, too, and twice it was good, but the other time it was bad. I'm not sure what happened the third time, but it wasn't a charm. We have had success with the crab rangoon, and my fiance loves the Fire Bowl Fried Rice with just chicken and shrimp (I will add that he drowns it in sriracha sauce - so I'm not sure why he insists on eating here so much...Isn't rooster sauce known for making semi-Asian food more palatable?) I eat here almost regularly. While the service has always been great, lately the food has dropped some in quality. I order the same thing always. Some days I get an expected portion, other days I get a very small portion, and other days I get enough to take home. This inconsistency makes me wonder why I pay the same amount always instead if varying amounts based on food. In terms of quality. Some days I come in and its above expectation there is a bit of a crisp to the chicken, there is a bit of a BBQ taste that I love. The sauce is on point, very thick and tasty. Then there are days were the chicken appears under cooked there is veggies when I ordered no veggies. And the sauce is watered down. Disgusting part was when I found a wad of chicken fat uncooked in my plate. Most often then not they get it right, but the exceptions have crept up more often then not. A few times I asked for a knife because they didn't have any available and got nothing. Even though the girl said sure I'll get you one. I tried Fire Bowl yesterday for the first time, and ordered the Stir Fry Your Way. I was very impressed with the portion size. I'm always a fan of getting enough food for two meals for one price. ;-) The Kung Pao sauce actually had some heat, and just the right amount. Some would probably consider it "fiery" though. When the bowl arrived, I immediately spooned out red pepper to add, then thought I ought to give it a try first. It was great just like it was (although I did add some more heat). As always, I'm delighted to find many vegetarian options. This certainly wasn't the very best Asian food I've ever had. But it was pretty darn good, and the price and ability to completely customize what you order makes it a place I'll definitely try again. One thing about this particular location--the ladies room floor is überslippery. I wish I could venture to other parts of the menu...but when you've had it 100+ times and it's still incredible, why mess with such a good thing??? The owner (or GM...I'm actually not sure who he is) is almost always there, always smiling, and has been for the 9+ years I've been visiting. Yep, it's a chain, but a little bit of an unorthodox one as chains go, and as I apparently have a soft spot for anthropomorphic food attached to the wall, I have to say that I dug my initial stop in here. The concept here is something in between counter service and something else altogether (perhaps Narnia), and over lunch we were able to cobble together some quick turns (large portioned at that) with some new choices I'd not yet had the pleasure of experiencing. To whit: the spicy coconut soup, which I fortunately ordered as in the 'small' bowl, could have been a meal into itself, the big bowl is about the size of my head. I've quickly learned that all pad thai is not the same and I must not be a fan of the real thing. I, however, LOVE Firebowl's pad thai. It's embarrassing really. I've driven to the restaurant determined to try something else on the menu- there's the teriyaki chicken my friend raved over, or the stir fry that's uber-healthy and full of options, but my mouth betrays me while ordering and I always end up with the same meal. I'm never disappointed. The service is simple and friendly. Stand in line, order food, grab your drink and find a seat. They bring it out to you and clean up later.
