A Tasty First Visit in South Austin My daughter and I recently visited PhoThaison in South Austin for the first time, and it definitely won't be our last. We started our meal with the Spicy Green Beans and Edamame, both of which were flavorful and made a great introduction to the menu. The green beans had just the right amount of heat, and the edamame was a simple but satisfying appetizer. For our entrées, I ordered the Singaporean Stir fry with Tofu, vegetables and rice, while my daughter chose the same dish but with vermicelli noodles. Both meals were fresh, delicious, and packed with flavor. The tofu was well-prepared, the vegetables were perfectly cooked, and the portions were impressively generous. We both left with happy appetites and leftovers to enjoy later. One of the things that stood out was the extensive menu. There are so many options to choose from that it was hard to decide, and there are already several dishes I'd like to try on my next visit. As an added bonus, they served my favorite IPA, Electric Jellyfish. Its bright, citrusy flavor paired perfectly with the spicy dishes and made the meal even more enjoyable. If you're looking for a local South Austin restaurant with tasty food, large portions, and plenty of variety, PhoThaison is well worth a visit. I really needed pho. Unfortunately, it wasn't this bowl that I needed. I think everything was there, the bowl quantity, the service, the presentation. MINUS the quality, I'm pretty sure the noodles used in my bowl was spoiled because my bowl had a sour taste that just wasn't palatable. Was recommended but won't be back. The place has a yukky antiseptic smell to it, yet it's grimy and rundown inside. The pho was tasteless, even after adding hoisen sauce, soy sauce, salt, and pepper. I love the banh mi! I always order mine with lemongrass grilled tofu and extra veg. Mom loves the dynamite shrimp. It's on the appetizer menu but she orders it as a meal. I tried their vegan pho but I thought the broth had a weird flavor. Still, nice attempt to making the menu more vegan friendly. My family has been going to this location since it opened. We have our favorites and they're done well. The takeout holds up for the most part except the spring rolls are wrapped so tightly in plastic wrap that they lose their shape upon opening. My husband picked up food from here the other day because we were lazy and don't want to cook. He ended up getting me the vegan curry. It was a medley of vegetables which included tofu, potatoes, mushrooms, bok choy, snow peas and various greens. I love when curries actually have veggies in it because it tastes better and is more healthier. The portions here were large enough to where my curry was about two meals which was also a nice added perk. I will definitely come here again because there are SO MANY vegan and vegetarian options which is nice. I really want to come back and see how the vegan pho tastes because I am still on the lookout for good tasting vegetarian pho. I also wanted to say that my husband liked the banh mi sandwich he got. OK it's winter. What do you need? Definitely a big bowl of beef stew from this amazing restaurant. The flavor is intense and amazing. And more hearty option than pho. Me and my boyfriend placed a to go order last night and it was just the meal we needed! We both got the beef pho with meatballs, brisket, and steak. For their to go orders they separate the noodles and the broth and they also give you a separate bag for the bean sprouts, limes, basil, and sauces! The amount of food and quality was really good, especially for the price! Most vietnamese restaurants we go to nowadays is at least $14 for a bowl of pho, but we got our bowls for $12 and we were allowed to choose up to 3 cuts of meat for free! As a bahn mi fan I will tell you now that there are very few places to get a really good bahn mi at a great price in South Austin. Pho Thai Son has great bahn mi's and their crispy & toasted french bread they use is superb! We love their grilled pork sandwiches but vegan/vegetarians should definitely try their lemongrass tofu for some extra spice. All bahn mi sandwiches are range from $7 - $8 with $1 extra if you want to add a fried egg on top. Placing your order online or over the phone is the jam nowadays but be ready to walk out that door to go grab your grub as they are super fast with when your order is ready. A nice lunch of Pho with beef and tripe. I was especially impressed with the tripe as it was cooked perfectly. The beef was plentiful and not fatty, noodles tasty, broth not too salty. It was a bit bland for my taste, so I did add some heat, but that is just my preference. All of patrons around me seemed to be also enjoying their food. Service was very fast and friendly and as it was during the lunch rush, you could tell they were used to dealing with customers who had to eat fast and get back to work. There are places that are much more elegant, more complex, etc. However, at this price point this is a worthy place to consider. I was very interested in the specialties of the house, but those will have to wait until a return trip is made as I was in a rush myself. I highly recommend eating at the establishment as items like the bean sprouts and sliced jalapeno's were nice and crisp. Honestly, this was a to-go order only for my hubby, however when I left, I regretted not ordering my own large beef pho. When you walk in the venue, it smelled so delicious. It was a Sunday afternoon when I went in, around 3 pm and it wasn't packed however I noticed everyone was quite pleased with their meal. Just ordered here for the first time. I love char boiled pork and fried rice. I wanted to try this place because it reminded me of the best restaurant place in Wichita, KS called Siagon. This place had similar dishes. Now the taste is off, but it was still alright. I can't say I would order from here frequently. Order drinks that where suppose to come with tapioca and didn't receive the tapioca. Also ordered a curry combo with vermicelli and there was no vermicelli with the meal tonight. The crab rations had the most taste. Delicious choice of Vietnamese cuisine. Pho Thai Son on William Cannon is where we always go. Brittany H. was our server and she had knowledge of the menu items and suggested we order the shaken beef, it was delicious. We had vegetarian spring rolls which were tasty and fresh. Our fresh, hot Jasmine tea was very tasty. We even had a side of bok choy which was so delicious & fresh. It's not authentic, the flavors are not balanced, the quality of ingredients are lacking and it's overpriced for what it is. We went here during our trip to Austin and it satisfied us very well. If you check in with Yelp, you do get a free soda/tea and make sure to take advantage of that. We had the pho and buddha delight. The pho is made with a vegan broth and tofu along with the right choice of veggies & herbs. It was a perfect lunch meal for myself.
