Central Grocery & Deli - Original Muffuletta Sandwich

My son and I did a food tour in New Orleans and this was one of the last stops. It was the best…read morefood we had on the whole tour. Yes it's a small Italian deli and shop but it's also the home of the original muffuletta sandwich, opening in 1906. I hate olives, but I was converted by this sandwich. It's the perfect ratio and the bread is simply exquisite. If you're in New Orleans, you must stop here.

I'm a New Orleans native living in Atlanta, who has worked in the service industry for 15 years. I…read morenever ever write reviews because I believe they hurt small businesses and feeds the egos of the ignorant, but that being said this place pissed me the fuck off with their service. I come to central deli whenever I'm with someone not from New Orleans due to the fact their muffuletta is quintessential! I would like to reiterate nothing was wrong with the food , great food purely with the lady taking orders. I got a classic half muffuletta and a "glass" San pellegrino. The lady then told me open glass is prohibited in New Orleans , I retorted with "o really I didn't know that , since when?" Before I could finish The lady then yelled with "SINCE FOREVER, IM SORRY YOUVE BEEN TO BAD BARS WHERE THEY SERVE YOU GLASS ITS BEEN ILLEGAL SINCE THE 50s" which isn't true the city changed the law in 2001. She then proceeded to open my glass bottle even though I told her I didn't want it open, so I the asked if I could get another one since she was in rage mode and didn't understand that she just contradicted herself. As I asked for the second San Pellegrino, she then takes the first one and goes "NO PROBLEM THANKS FOR THE FREE DRINK", and starts to drink the San Pellegrino infront of me as I check out, making thirst quenching noises like "AHH". As I leave she can't help but remind me for her free drink again. I'm pretty sure the management witness this whole situation and I hope they do something about, that lady doesn't realize what hospitality is and needs to be fired. I did nothing to her and I bet I wasn't the first she has blow up on. But in my eyes absolutely unacceptable.

Verti Marte is one of those classic New Orleans spots that totally lives up to its reputation…read more I ordered the famous "All That Jazz" sandwich and it did not disappoint--super flavorful, packed with fillings, and just downright delicious. It's messy in the best way possible and exactly what you want after a long day (or night) in the city. I also love that they're open 24/7, which makes it such a clutch spot no matter the time--late night, early morning, whenever the craving hits. No-frills, iconic, and seriously satisfying--definitely a must-try in NOLA!

I met the owner and he was as sweet as can be with his southern charm. I ordered the shrimp po boy and fries and a egg breakfast sandwich to go. The fries were good with salt and pepper seasoning but there was a lot of fries! The sandwich would've been enough. I will say I planned on ordering food here no matter what but my total was around $45 so keep that in mind, the price can come for you quick! That is my main quip. They had a bunch of options such as lasagna, chicken, and different kinds of cooked fish The store is kind of tight so not recommended for someone who's handicapped. They're open 24/7 so I'm sure it can be a good place to pick up something good once you leave Bourbon Street!

I talked to the owner and he told me they were closing. Not sure if it was just for the day (this was the day after the tragedy on New Years Day), or if it was a longer term closure. I would hope it's not long term. We would definitely like to check it out as the menu is full of things that we love to eat. When I talked to the owner he suggested a few other places to eat that day. Definitely a stop on our next trip to the Crescent City.

Tables clean and floors free of debris. Not a long line, and a less than 5 min wait. Very friendly service & obviously good at multitasking. Came recommended by co-workers. I had skipped on it before because I'm not much of a sandwich person, but found out about the hot bar and opted for the ribs, mac & cheese and steamed cabbage. Ribs were okay. A bit fatty for my taste because I don't like removing it from my mouth in public. Some portions of it needed more sauce. Probably the most annoying part of it was the small plastic fork & knife I was provided to cut them, but then again, most people probably would have picked them up and eaten with their hands. Mac and cheese was just mac and cheese The cabbage was AMAZING! It also had bits of broccoli in it and was very well flavored. I could have eaten a bowl of it with some chopped ham deli meat if I had known. Maybe next time. Portions were ample and pricing ($10.99 + tax) was on spot. Will try again, and this time bring my own silverware.

This fun joint also provides a good choice of daily specials. You walk in and get in line then start looking at the menu and checking out the daily specials to decide what you will eat. The ambiance is very interesting with food items all over the place like a little tightly packed grocery store. This spot is VERY popular which leads to the biggest problem here which is parking. The parking here is very limited and it is a bit of a challange to get in and out of the parking lot. Many people say this is their favorite spot to eat and it seems a lot of folks come here nearly daily to get their World Deli fix taken care of. My MIL brought me here for the first time in '93 and she and her friends still come for lunch a few times a month as do most people who've lived here their whole life. Parking is tight but don't let that keep you away from the World. Yesterday, I went in for meatballs and red sauce but quickly took a detour when I saw the daily special, Crawfish Monica. If you're visiting for the first time, crawfish or shrimp Monica is a local favorite that's getting harder to find on restaurant menus partly because every family has their own version of this special party dish. The Monica special was outstanding. I got a plate full of spicy crawfish cream sauce mixed with rotini pasta, a side of spiced corn and garlic bread, enough for lunch and a midnight snack. I also couldn't pass up the shrimp remoulade salad for my lunch the next day. The shrimp were seasoned, the romaine greens were fresh, and the remoulade dressing was a knockout. If you're not feeling like a hot plate special, World Deli has a big list of sandwiches and poboys that are super popular, as well. But whatever you decide, don't skip out on dessert. This is one of the few local sandwich spots with a homemade dessert menu as big as the sandwich one and these desserts cater to the local palate. Yesterday they had plain cheesecake, cheesecake with cherry sauce, Tuscan cream cake, rum cake, pineapple upside down cake, wedding cake, pralines, and tiramisu. Don't ever pass up the rum cake in Louisiana. If you're in town for the weekend and have access to a fridge, buy some spinach artichoke dip and crab stuffed mushrooms from the ready-prep fridge for a late night snack. This place is the real deal. Stop in and see where y'at.
