Neil was hands down a wonderful person to work with. He came out to our home, went through several options, and helped us order the perfect fireplace doors. He told us the doors would arrive in 3 to 4 weeks which was the quote his factory gave him (we heard the man on the phone). When 3 weeks came and we had not heard from anyone we called and found out there was an issue with the doors and it would take at least 4 additional days. We were a bit upset because we had planned a get together for the weekend after we had hoped to finish the project. Neil talked with my husband for 3 days in a row and managed to have the doors ready by the weekend before so that we would have the week to finish the project. Once we began installing the doors on Saturday we had a few questions and it was definitely after store hours. We called Neil's number planning to leave a voicemail but he answered, helped answer our questions, and even told us to call back at any time during the weekend if we had any other questions. Neil was professional and kind. He made the large purchase and ordeal so much easier to deal with. We went to a few places before and the workers were pretty unfriendly and not helpful when it came to making a decision on the doors. Neil came to our house and showed us different products and gave us a completely honest answer to all our questions even when it affected the potential sale. We have been doing business with Firepaces Plus for over 7 years. We bought our log kits, automatic starters and screens all from them. They have a fabulous selection, with fair prices. Recently one of our automatic starters was not working in one fireplace and the other fireplace was just not working at all. They sent someone to fix it and he was able to fix the starter in the one and the other was just that the pilot light was out which they lit. There was concern about the burner pan so the owner, Neal came out to check on it. He said everything was fine. There was no additional service charge for his trip. Margie not only called me to explain the different parts I was requesting,l but she also called the manufacturer "Napoleon to find out it they had the parts. A coupe of days later I called her back and told her that now the wireless receiver switch broke and once again Marge checked on the parts for me. When I called Marge back about ordering a whole new kit, she put me in touch with Brian who researched the different types of remote controls available for my fireplace and called me back to explain the different types of remote control that would work with the fireplace log set. He was so honest, even talking us out of the more expensive option because he said it would be too big for our space. He was super accommodating too. I can be a tough customer. But Neal, Robin and the crew won me over by going to extremes to complete a fireplace installation on schedule. We got nearly a foot of snow on the morning of the installation, making driving from the far northern suburbs to the city treacherous and super slow--and throwing the ability to work in doubt. Neal and team are very knowledgeable and honest. We've used them for two separate projects. They were one of the few places that were willing to come out and do an in house estimate. Because they are good, they can be booked pretty far out in advance. Neal was not only knowledgeable but also honest about their recommendations. A very good experience replacing an unsafe ventless unit from the floor up. Neal came, made some suggestions; no high pressure. We visited the store to get some ideas and Neal's second visit clarified our thinking. Delivery was well within the window he gave us and installation by Dan and Kevin was clean and well-done, as was the taping and drywall finishing Juan did. Communication and scheduling were excellent throughout the process and Neal and his people dealt very well with problems encountered in removing the old granite mantel. I found the manager to be extremely rude when dealing with a service issue. He claimed he explained something to me prior to the service call which would have eliminated the need for the call but he did not. Why would I not avoid a service call if I could???? The service call fee starts at $150 before any work is performed. I find this amount to be considerably higher than any other household service or repair. He also stated he has to explain this charge to customers 20 times a day. Well then obviously something is wrong there. However I can say that the technician that came out to the house was wonderful. read more

Just moved into our home and wanted to convert the wood burning fireplace to gas. Contacted one company and when the rep came out was told it couldn't be done that there was too much work involved including making holes in the drywall. I then contacted Fireplaces Plus and am so glad I did. Neal came out and assessed the project and assured me that the work could be done. In reading the comments its seems this company is all or nothing. In this case it was worse than nothing. A simple service request to change out an igniter on a ventless fireplace. The part number was provided and I accepted that they couldn't even get to the service call for 3 weeks. 3 weeks later on the day they were scheduled to arrive they called 3 hours into the time window to cancel. They were terribly sorry, understood people stayed home from work. But luckily for me, they could reschedule for the next day. During the service window AGAIN 10 they called and cancel this time with no indication of when the next date would even be. I asked if at least they had the part and I would come get it, they said it had not been order, even though all the information was provided 3 weeks ago along with a Credit Card and the agreement to pay regardless if the problem was not the igniter. Apparently that is not how 'they do business'. Instead they insisted someone, at some point would call reschedule yet again a $180 service call to come out, determine the igniter is bad only THEN would they order it and have me wait another 3 weeks for yet another service fee to come back to install the igniter. American Heritage on Western Ave in Chicago is a much better alternative. read more

I highly recommend Fireplaces Plus! I have used them to extend a gas line to a wood burning fireplace and their work was excellent! They also installed 3 gas log sets in my 3 fireplaces and installed the remote control mechanism in each as well. They work beautifully and their prices were very reasonable. Last week I called Neil to have someone come up to spruce up the ember material, clean the gas logs and replace all the remote control batteries-he has someone at my house within 24 hours!! I went into the store today to see a particular fireplace model that I had been researching for our remodel. The tiny store was jammed with merchandise to the point it was difficult to walk the 10 feet to the register. The young man was condescending and just plain rude. I explained to him that I just wanted him to show me a specific line of direct vent gas models and it would be up to my architect and builder to determine if it was appropriate for our application. He insisted on arguing with me about whether the particular line I was interested in would work, even after I explained that I certainly did not know all the specifics and couldn't give him the detail he obviously required.
