Worth the long wait! We moved here from the Bay Area and I miss good Asian food so much. There aren't very many Asian food choices in the area and I am so happy we found this place! We waited a long time for our food because they were super busy when we went for dinner but we didn't mind waiting. Our server looked stressed out and busy, but he was great. We ordered a lychee gimlet to start and I could drink those like they're juice. So freaking yummy! Husband and I ordered the Korean stone bowl and Tokyo fried chicken to share and that was plenty of food for the both of us. That Korean stone bow and that crispy rice at the bottom of the bowl was so good. That was the star of the show for dinner. Flavor was amazing! Overall rating 3.75/5--with the potential to be higher if they just improved on the overall taste of the dishes. This is one of those gimmicky restaurants that attempts to dabble in too many cuisines. The execution of some of the dishes can quite abysmal. BUT, there are a few dishes that are done really well. Ramen: the ramen taste's gentrified. The broth is lackluster and the texture of the noodles is off-putting. Samosas: Delicious. Comes with two sauces that are both excellent and complement the dish well. My only complaint is that portion size compared to the price. Sushi: They cannot call this sushi. The rice was overcooked, and wasn't even prepared the right way (rice vinegar and what not). The overall taste was horrible. Poke nachos: Pretty decent. I suggest the half portion unless you have a big party. It comes with a lot of the wonton chips. But I wish it had more poke, as the fish to chip ratio was way off. Service is good. Staff are pretty attentive with refills and checking on the table. The restaurant itself is clean and has a nice ambiance. "Don't be fooled by the plain exterior!" I was on my way to a nearby brewery, when I spotted this interesting restaurant. We found free parking close by. This restaurant has a great menu with some interesting asian dishes. My wife ordered the salmon bowl and I ordered the seafood ramen bowl. I thought the seafood bowl was especially tasty. It's really a combination soup and seafood with noodles. My wife loved the salmon bowl, and I was able to sneak a few bites when she wasn't looking. So overall an excellent visit. We've been to First and Main many times and have recommended it to friends as well. There are many items on the menu that we really enjoy like the calamari, truffle fries, dumplings, etc... By far though, our favorite item on the menu is the Ahi Poke Nachos. This last time we ordered them though, we were very disappointed. They had the fried won ton chips piled high on the platter. We assume to compensate for the lack of ahi. We counted eight very small cubes of fish, but plenty of the "so called" crab salad that didn't taste anything like crab. The sauce on the nachos didn't taste as good either. Our entire party was disappointed. We had previously told friends that these nachos were better than the ones served at Table 26, but that is no longer the case. I'm not sure we'll be back. read more

My daughter asked for a steak dinner for her birthday. This dinner was so good that she barely allowed me to let HER take the picture of her steak & fries. My husband ordered the shaking beef, which has an acquired taste. It was good but not for me. Daughter had the grilled skirt steak & fries. I wasn't sure what I wanted because this was a new place for us to try. Ended up with a special noodle dish the waiter recommended. Note it's not on the menu. It was good, but I did regret not ordering the Island Ramen bowl. Just couldn't risk it with the coconut milk that night. Anyway we will be back everything was delicious. Some of the things I don't care for are the Tokyo fried chicken and the Cheeto crumb sushi. A little too far off the beaten path for me. Service is frequently mediocre. Came here for the first time to celebrate a birthday. Originally we were going to come in at 5 not realizing we needed reservations. I'm not sure if it was because they were busy or if it's a reservation only restaurant. Our party of seven ordered more drinks before ordering food. Our server recommended a few dishes for us since we were all first timers at the restaurant. We were all happy with the flavor and freshness of every plate ordered. So go with friends to share appetizers and have drinks together. Unfortunately, the service has been amiss each time we have been here. Really hoped to love felt let down after dining at this restaurant. They sat us in the bar area, but didn't have anyone to serve us it seemed. After waiting for about 15 minutes, I flagged the hostess down as she was sitting another couple in our area to see if we had a server. The bartender finally came over and got us waters and started our order. We got the calamari and poke nachos. I really wish I had taken a photo of the food... Nothing like the photos on yelp. The calamari was just OK, the poke nachos came out with no ahi on them. Ask the bartender about it and she very apologetically took it back. Returned with a new plate for us rather quickly. Both plates of nachos were doused in mayo and imitation crab. Made me wonder if they were low on fish? The mayo was so much I couldn't even eat it. We ordered a s'mores and cheesecake for dessert. AMBIANCE - It's a very trendy space for Turlock and they did a good job spacing the tables out so you're not cramped. A DRINKS - The cocktail pictures I saw here were intriguing but my friend ordered a Gobi Oasis which was gin, cucumber and lemon (a.k.a. a cucumber gimlet) but it came in a goblet and was half full so perhaps not the best drink on the menu when it comes to appeal or taste. C+ FOOD - There are a good amount of options on the menu for both carnivores and vegetarians alike, however the dishes we got were pretty salty and had a lot of sauces that drowned the food. We ordered the ahi poke bowl, cauliflower, short rib, deviled eggs, and Brussels sprouts. The best thing of these were the eggs by far and had the best combination of flavors. Despite the artistry of the plating, the taste of the dishes were mediocre overall. The biggest problem, though, is that the menu descriptions are incomplete and don't list all of the ingredients; if there's something you don't like or are allergic to, this will be a huge issue for you. C+ SERVICE - They were quick to bring out the food and were mindful of providing optimal service such as asking if we wanted lemon and straws with our water and checking in periodically without being too bothersome. A+ RESERVATIONS - The process through Resy was very easy however there are apparently three ways to reserve (patio, lounge, inside) but it was busy and the only option was patio. I didn't realize that it meant outside seating without any heaters on an evening in the low 50s so we lucked out and got a seat at the open bar seating. They should let you know what you're booking. Nobody was sitting outside. D+ OVERALL - They have a chance to survive in downtown but need to seriously revisit their dishes and not mask the natural flavors of food with a bunch of salty sauces. Upon arrival we were greeted by a hostess who took us to the beautiful lounge area. When you make a reservation online it gives you the option of lounge dining or bar area. The dining area is where they have booth tables, lounge is more of a table and chairs/booth vibe. The bar area is where they have the barstools. The ambiance is emasculate with great modern style interior design. Over all we really liked our food. The Thai tea was great. I had the Korean stone bowl which remained hot the entire time while eating it since it was in a bowl. I was worried about the egg being raw but I learned that you're supposed to mix your food when it arrives and it cooks and remains warm while eating. The camp fire s'mores were a great dessert. It was toasted marshmallow, cinnamon gram crackers and chocolate. You're paying for quality and unique food so the price point is higher than you're average Turlock Resturant. But I was so looking forward to this place opening that I had to go in as soon as I could. Luckily, I needn't have worried about any kinks; everything here was perfect, from the design and concept to the service and menu. We started off with the shishito peppers and the paratha. My daughter could have easily eaten the whole bowl of peppers on her own, while I (being the bread slut that I am) adored the paratha. For our mains, she chose the Valley Grain bowl, and thoroughly enjoyed it (although she said it would have been better with more noodles and less fruit.) I selected the Tokyo Ramen, and although I've had better, it was still a very flavorful bowl, particularly the pork belly, which was deliciously tender, and the broth. The Korean stone bowl (dolsot bibimbap) was very good. Packed inside the grey granite bowl was a generous portion of rice topped with savory soy-glazed steak and mushroom pieces, bean sprouts, sweet pickled zucchini (?), carrot slivers, a fried egg, and green onions. A spicy, sweet, mostly salty gochujang sauce dominated the whole dish once everything was mixed together. On their own, the individual toppings were easily discernible by their separate textures and flavors. The pickled zucchini was sweet. The mushroom and steak were coated in a thick, savory soy sauce that oozed umami flavor. The green onions were crisp and added a pungent freshness. However, like I said before, once everything was mixed together, the gochujang sauce was really the only thing I could taste. The zucchini lost its sweetness. The steak and mushrooms surrendered their umami power to the dominating spice. The dish went from a medley of precisely orchestrated elements to a raucous single note that held my tastebuds' attention, but left me hungry for other harmonies. I also found it interesting that the dish was served with a pair of chopsticks. Koreans will usually eat this using a long spoon with a shallow head. This makes for easy mixing, scooping into mouth, and scraping off crusty rice bits that get stuck and toasted on the hot stone bowl (yes - this dish had crusty rice bits). Overall, a good meal.
