We have been eating here inside and with takeout since moving to Kentwood in 2019. The service is terrific, the staff inside and the take out staff are above no other we have ever dealt with. Where these low profiles have come from is beyond us. The food, and there is always plenty of it, is some of the best Chinese we have ever had the pleasure of devouring. November 2, 2018 lunch: I'm so bad at keeping up with reviews! I was scrolling through my phone pictures and came across these mouthwatering photos of my lunch at First Wok...3 months ago. I can't believe I didn't log this yet! I have no details. All I can say is that the lunch portion was enormous for the price. The service was so fast even though they were packed - even the bar stools were taken! And the food was delicious! My sister's boyfriend's aunt serves here and she hooked us up with crab rangoons for an app. Yum! The only downside which I complain about all the time, were the egg rolls that came with our entrees. I don't like Chinese egg rolls and until I find a good Chinese egg roll, I'll keep complaining :) I'll come again and write a more detailed review! In the meantime, enjoy the pictures! read more

Came in with a large group on Christmas Day. The place was PACKED! But we got a table for 11 quick enough. Though there were not a lot of open tables but they were slinging food and making quick work of seating an ordering. The menu is large and has lots to choose from. I went for the combination fried rice, a favorite of mine at Chinese Restaurants. My wife ordered the Three Seafood Delight with steamed veggies. I also had a hot and sour soup to start. The soup was great, nice spice and good thick broth and nice assortment of mushrooms and tofu. I liked it quite a bit. The fried rice was not amazing, but the pork was really well cooked and the shrimp was nice a big. There was just not a lot of flavor and was overall just okay. I asked for chili sauce and what I got was just oily and not spicy, hot, or flavorful at all. Very disappointing. My wife's food arrived late compared to everyone else's, but she said it was good, to be fair steamed veggies don't have much flavor but she had huge chunks of crab along with her other seafood which was nice to see. The service was decent considering how busy it was. Overall the food was just okay a few others commented about the same. read more

I am giving this place 3 stars.. BUT my go-to here is phenomenal. I always get the Mongolian beef (not breaded) and the crab cheese and that is a 5/5. I used to have a sentimental attachment to this place being my mom took me here as a child but as the years go by I am swinging on my wrecking ball to mark my growth and independence (figuratively) and this place may be left with my childhood.. The eggrolls aren't good and neither is the fried rice. The hot n sour soup is VERY peppery and thick but I usually like it. A lot of the other traditional Chinese dishes are either overly breaded or way too saucy to enjoy. I only give 3 stars because the things I like from here are a diamond in the rough. I don't eat a lot of Chinese food but a friend wanted to meet here for lunch. First Wok is located near 44th and Breton by Village Inn. The interior is large, very clean, and nicer than most Chinese places I've dined at in the area. The lunch menu is large and available 11 am to 3 pm Monday through Saturday. I ordered the Kung Po chicken, and it came with egg drop soup, 1 crab rangoon, 1 spring roll, fried or steamed rice, a large portion of chicken and veggies, and hot tea. All this for $9! The portions are huge and my meal was great. Service was super fast and our food came out quickly. There were lots of people coming in for lunch but the dining area is huge, so I wouldn't think it ever gets too packed at that time. There are quite a few places in this area that I would probably pick over First Wok, but I do think I will be back to take advantage of their great lunch special. read more

Have been going to First Wok for 15 years. I love Chinese food after being in Hong Gong and China. I sometimes ate alone, but usually with two others. We always have great friendly service, wonderful meals and a great time. The place is spotless, I use silverware, but my friends use chop sticks. We all sing the praises of First Wok. I am 90. Good Chinese food. Standard selections for your average Chinese food menu of options. Before your thumb your "foodie palette" nose, there are a few standouts if you want to step out the normal Mongolian Beef or Sweet and Sour Chicken options on the menu: Hot & Spicy Wonton- chili oil is a spicy mainstay and doesn't fail here. Just mix in with some delicious steamed pork wontons and you have an amazing dish. Big enough to share, OR use as a small plate entree if you don't want a big family-style dish. It is an appetizer but can be ordered and served as a main dish. Lettuce Wrapped - another good option if you want to go more with a thai/Vietnamese/Cantonese nod. Think larb or nam sod. Mixed ground chicken, veggies, and a good vinegary tang. Served with large romaine lettuce and a side of hoison sauce and ground peanuts. I asked for some extra chili oil which gave it some kick and melded with the cold lettuce wrap. Yum! Hot and Sour Soup - while a normal menu mainstay the sweet and sour broth is delicious. I like a little kick and a good sour soup is a treat. Go for it! The other two in our party "safety zoned" with your everyday Chinese favorites - Chicken with vegetables supreme and Chicken fried rice. No lack of vegetables, chicken, and food. Big family-style platters ensure no one will go hungry - you will take home or share with the table. The chicken fried rice is very popular as many around us and on the to go orders had it. I even sampled and it was very good - a good salty option but not as soy sauce soaked as you would expect. The variety of veggies in the Supreme was surprisingly good. Other items included were the egg drop soup, which has a lot of extra vegetables in it. A little different than I have seen previously. Very thick, not as brothy. And Egg rolls which are traditional. Nothing standing out but good. The bonus here is on Sunday they serve a soup and egg roll with meal - maybe we caught the end of a lunch hour but apparently normally during the week soup and egg rolls are extra. Who knew? Not a good choice. Strange ideas on how food should be cooked and served. Maybe dangerous in the right situations. My almond chicken had bits of chicken laced with bone fragments and sharp shards. Then there was the chicken leg knuckle joint that was also battered and fried with a sharp bone fragment too. The egg roll was very good. The egg drop soup tasted weird. It had more onions, shallots carrots and peas than egg drops. The fried rice was dry and lumpy. Had to cut it with a fork. Been eating at this location for years. Always liked the food and service. Good portions and prices for lunch. Especially love the Egg Drop Soup as it has lots of vegetables and shrimp in it. I can only eat it this way now, no other compares! It's pretty distinctive so when other sit down restaurants serve it this way, I don't know where it originated (thought it was here). Similar restaurants with that soup and taste of the food (like literally all done the same) are: Three Happiness (Alpine), First Wok (Alpine), and Magic Wan (Grandville). This is where my kids like to go for Chinese. We live 25 minutes away but we haven't found a place near us that compares. We love the crab cheese and always get 3-4 orders for our family of 6. They are the best ones we have had. Our favorite meals are the Mongolian beef (we ask for broccoli with it) and the Sesame chicken. We have never had a bad meal here with those. First time trying First Wok and I can say it's my new favorite spot for Chinese food! First off, they have great sanitary precautions in place, 6ft marks, separate doors to enter and exit, plus they even sanitized my credit card after the gentleman swiped it! In addition, their food is fantastic! Tastes fresh and you can tell it's quality Chinese food. I got the orange chicken, it had large pieces of chicken and the sauce is so delicious. I also got the vegetable lo mein which had fresh cut veggies and their fried rice was amazing. Will order from them again for sure! I was disappointed the few low reviews give them a lower rating due to incorrect food given, which isn't a big deal to me.
