I'm so excited that Fish Guts has finally opened! I remember passing by this establishment many times whenever I would visit Barrio Logan and was always super curious about what the spot was. After experiencing the spot myself, I can now confidently say that this has easily become one of my favorite taco spots in San Diego. Everything about this place impressed me - from the food, to the drinks, to the service, to the ambience, and to the overall energy. During our trip, we tried every single margarita on the menu, and our favorite was definitely the "El Tre-Some". The margaritas here are so good and taste really fresh and not overly syrupy. I believe they make their own syrups and agua fresca to add to their margaritas and it's very apparent. Not to mention, the glassware they invested into this place is of high quality too. I'm a glassware lover and definitely noticed, so I see you guys!! Loved the simple, but cute presentation of the drinks too. Food-wise, we got both appetizers on the menu (the ceviche estilo acapulco and the smoked fish dip). Our group was not as familiar with a more tomato-based ceviche with olives, so just in case you are not a big olive lover and prefer a more refreshing type of ceviche, this type of ceviche might not be for you. Both appetizers were good, but we enjoyed the smoked fish dip more. For tacos, we tried the taco estilo baja, the taco al pastor, the taco de espada, and the taco de coco. Holy moly, when I tell you that these tacos were heavenly, BOY I MEAN IT! Their tacos are so well thought out, refreshing, high quality, just everything. They aren't your typical street taco and are more of a crafty approach on the cuisine, which is really cool to me. When you see that the tacos are "~$11-$12" on the menu, don't fret - it's because the tacos come in a pair, so it's a great way to share with someone and to try different ones together. We loved every single taco, especially the taco estilo baja. The ambience is really cute and clean. The place is on the smaller and cozier side, so keep this in mind if you are trying to bring a big group here. You also have a beautiful view of the Coronado bridge from here, so I suggest coming around Sunset (but also, bring a jacket because the majority of the spot is open air, so it will get cold, esp in the evening!). This place also plays the best music. Whoever is curating the playlists, I just wanted to give a shout out to you as well. If a place has great food AND has great music, everything just escalates. You definitely feel like you're in a magical indie movie in here for sure. Gosh, I just really love this place a lot. The Baja tacos with the local white fish was spicy and delicious. It's a small corner spot that does dine in only, so if you plan to have food to go bring your Tupperware. One negative I had was the coconut shrimp was a little too salty for my taste. I did feel that the one server could have been overwhelmed if it was a huge lunch rush but she handled the crowd at the time fine. The ambiance was basic but relaxing because of the open space to allow San Diego open air come in which I liked. This restaurant is phenomenal. The entrepreneur-owner-chef has brought together a must-dine-experience. When you are touched by an experience, it is noteworthy. This was one I seriously enjoyed. Fish Guts is a new modern taqueria in a corner suite on the main drag of Barrio Logan. It's across the street from a well-known taco spot in this neighborhood. The inside was small with roughly five stools at the bar and another five along the outside wall that faces Logan Ave. A sidewalk patio had several more stools for seating but no tables. The soft opening menu listed seven different tacos of which six contained a seafood protein and the last had oyster mushrooms. The tacos were sold in pairs and priced between $9 and $12. The two sets that I ordered were the Al Pastor and De Espada. The first was salmon marinated in achiote chile guajillo with cured onions, cilantro, and pineapple as garnishments. The second was blackened swordfish with jalapeno slaw and spicy aioli. By street-size standards, these tacos were tiny, especially for the price. I could finish one of them with just two regular bites. The contrast of flavors was good as the pineapple chunks brightened up the mildly spicy chile in the Al Pastor and the aioli added light heat to the grilled swordfish in De Espada. The ladies who staffed the bar counter were pleasant and easy to chat with. This place has only been open for two weeks, and the plan is to expand the menu with more seafood-based offerings besides tacos (brunch?) after the full grand opening. read more

Been wanting to try this place for a while, but not sure if that's where we went wrong by waiting too long. They normally don't open until 4pm but I guess weekends they're open at noon. We came at 4pm on a Saturday and they were out of almost half the items on their limited menu. We had a person who was gluten intolerant and all gluten free options were out except one. Each taco came with two for $11-12 a plate , and each taco was a corn tortilla, a meat, and coleslaw.. that's it, quite basic. One of our party members is not an Aioli fan but they said they do not do modifications and cannot serve the taco without the slaw....The fish itself was delicious but we were disappointed with the lack of options and diversity in ingredients. No salsas or anything. There was 3 different cocktails, all with agave wines due to low abv; each was sweet but pepino was the least sweet and our favorite one. Service was friendly and seating options limited. In the fried fish tacos, adobada taco, and coconut shrimp taco, the protein itself was good but the prices are a bit high for me as these tacos are small. Also I had wished that the slaw used between several of the tacos was varied more. My coconut shrimp taco didn't really taste much of coconut and since it's using the same slaw as the fish tacos, with the slaw being a major flavor in the dish, the dishes ended up tasting similar. read more

We devoured the Taco Estilo Baja (my #1 fav), Taco De Coco (my #2 fav) & the Taco De Espada (#3 fav). I also tried the Taco De Fish & Chips which was not very good in my opinion. It was like having potato salad on my taco. In addition, the service was lovely. We sat right at the bar where we could enjoy watching the nice lady prepare drinks for the restaurant & she was so friendly! Lastly, the ambiance was active. When I finally was able to try this place, I instantly fell in love, and this is easily one of my favorite taco places in SD, at least fish taco wise. The place is small but homey, with some interesting decorations inside including a whole boat fit overhead above the kitchen door/counter. We ordered one order of each type of taco, and each order of about $10-11 comes with 2 tacos. Note that since they make all the tacos fresh in house, it does take time between ordering and getting your food, so be prepared to wait. Service is great though, very attentive and kind. My favorite was De Coco, which was deep fried whole coconut shrimp with chipotle aioli. The batter is light and crispy and the mix of the sauces and flavors were well put together. Honestly though, I can say that about all the other tacos as well. The blackend swordfish De Espada taco is also very flavorful, spicy, topped with jalapeños, perfect balance of crunch and savory. I would say the one that wasn't as good was the al pastor; it is normally salmon but the day I went it was replaced with a different leaner kind of fish, and it didn't have the fatty flavor that normally goes well with the al pastor sauce. The dessert was also very good; creamy coconut and not too sweet, topped with fruit in the middle, and a great way to end the meal. I would definitely come back again! read more

I am a pescatarian and eat A LOT of fish tacos on a weekly basis. My expectations for this place were very high considering the attention it has been getting and I am very happy to report that it did not disappoint! They are definitely the most creative flavor combination of fish tacos I have ever come across. I wouldn't go here if you want your basic fish taco because these all had a ton of personality. We ordered All the tacos on the menu besides the vegetarian one and split them up between the three of us. My personal favorites were the fish and chips and coconut shrimp, but all were delicious and others in our group had other favorites than myself, but agreed you can't go wrong with any of them. Other people commented on the price, however I thought that it was very reasonable given the nice portions and quality of the tacos. We did arrived 10 minutes after opening and had to wait about 40 minutes to get sat on a Sunday, but it was worth it and we can prepared to stand in line. Came here as I saw on IG sometime ago a fish sandwich, but when I saw the menu it was not listed. Currently their menu offers different tacos and heard the owner is considering bringing the fish sandwich back. Hoping it's true so I can come back and try it. Meanwhile I ordered the pepino santo margarita.... It was sooooo good! This was the only flavored margarita that did not have some type of spice in the drink. I was hoping they could make the other margaritas without the spice, but it seems it's already premixed so they cannot make it without the spice. From the looks they probably taste good (for you spice lovers in your drinks). Also, the margaritas are decently priced ($9). Food wise I ordered the fish and chips tacos and De Espada tacos. Both are made to order and we're really good! I can't pick one over the other as each has their own flavor (very different when comparing). Another thing worth noting are that the tortillas are hand made. Service was great and the server was patient with all my question (have a dairy intolerance so I had lots of questions). It was a delicious and flavorful sandwich - beer battered fish that was fresh, tartar sauce, lettuce and pickles. It sounds simple, but it was one of the best sandwiches I've eaten. I've been following Fish Guts for a while--ever since I saw it featured in San Diego Magazine as one of the best spots for fish tacos. The food is fresh, clearly made with care, and always delicious. That said, I recently visited and was disappointed to find it closed two hours before the posted time. I totally get that everything is fresh and made daily, and it's understandable that you might sell out--but if you know weekends bring high volume, it might be worth prepping a bit more or having a backup plan. People, like me, often drive from far away to visit, and finding the place unexpectedly closed can be frustrating. I know this is a passion project, and I respect that. But consistency--especially with hours--matters. Still, I'm glad your food speaks for itself and keeps people coming back. Just hoping for a bit more reliability moving forward. read more

Everyday Chef Pablo buys fresh fish for his delicious seafood tacos and the weekday fish sandwich offered from noon to 4pm. The staff is a joy and take super good care of me everytime I come. The tacos and sandwich are delicious and I feel great knowing I'm eating seafood that isn't frozen and imported. They offer alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages at this spot. Truly more of a 4.5; the tortilla was so so so good, probably one of the best restaurant hand made tortillas I've had. I tried the Estilo Baja and De Coco tacos; I love coconut shrimp but I think with the tortilla and slaw, the coco was not coco-ing much, which may actually be a plus for some people. With that said , I preferred the Estilo Baja more but they were both incredible. Again, for me, it was truly the tortilla that made it. The only reason I can't give a 5 star is because the tacos are street sized. I think the pricing of them warrant a regular size tortilla. I also tried the fish dip, and it was basically a simple tuna salad, still good though. The service was good. Went on a Thursday afternoon and it picked up soon after we had ordered. There was only one server but the place is pretty small and he was attentive and prompt. I did not note any restrooms. Parking was street parking, we parked about less than a block away. read more
