Came here on 4th of July just before they opened. There were a few people in line before us but we were able to get a table as soon as they opened their doors. We tried the fish & chip, de espada, & de coco tacos and they were all delicious. I was hoping to get the fish sandwich that i saw other people post but it wasn't on the menu. The Fish & chip taco was interesting with the potato topping but i think i might prefer the more traditional fish taco next time we visit. The De Espada is a blackened fish taco that had so much flavor. The homemade tortilla's were really good. Sometimes they can be too dense for me but these were soft and perfect with the tacos. Glad we came right when they opened because there was a long line while we were there and when we left. Slipped into Fish Guts Barrio Logan today for lunch. The open comfortable space sits on a corner with views of the Coronado Bridge. A competent professional chef in concert with a welcoming, kind and graceful gal appear to be the entire staff. Order at the counter, take a seat and very soon utensils, napkin and drink are placed in front of you. EZ PZ...... quickly the main event arrives. Now understand that I am an ancient elder and have consumed every type of fish sandwich throughout the many decades of my life. I am not whistling dixie, when I say the fish sandwich at Fish Guts is the very best of all time! This place is a must-go-to. I have been multiple times now so the consistency is there! It's a cute, clean & minimal w/ "outdoor vibes' spot with an equally minimal menu that bangs. Great music is always playing! Oh, and the street parking out front is very easy. The fish sandwich is on the lunch menu only and is SO very good.. Crunchy batter, fresh fish inside, homemade tarter sauce that has a teeny bit of heat and citrus... All on a perfectly grilled bun! Whoaa, their smoked fish dip is on the dinner menu and is awesome! Personally I'd go at the cusp of the lunch and dinner menu to try both and get some tacos. I've had the blacked fish tacos and they were very tasty, high-quality and not heavy at all -and a great deal. Also, I've tried some of the beers they offer and a refreshing cucumber agave-wine cocktail. Pleased with all of it! The service is also exceptional. The servers are attentive and super nice. The head chef kicks it in the front of house sometimes and it feels like a family. Fish guts is my new go-to fish sandwich spot in SD. Did a taco crawl today and tried 7 different tacos. The two we had here came in 2nd and 4th which is pretty darn good. The best thing about Fish Guts is their tortillas...they were out of sight. The best we had today. The swordfish was the taco that came in 2nd for the day. The fish itself was cooked perfectly, it was also the best presented taco of the day imo and was really well balanced with the fresh ingredients. The baja fish taco was a solid 4th place overall but the fish was a little soggy for being beer battered and the spice level was a little too much. I like spicy as much as the next person but I felt like I wanted to savor the natural flavors of all the ingredients which I wasn't able to do here. Unfortunately I couldn't find a reason to bump them up to a five. It was an hour wait which I'm not marking them down for just not able to justify bumping them up. I waited in line for 30 minutes and was never acknowledged by the staff, not even when I was in the front of the line for 10 minutes. The gentleman bringing the food and pouring the water was great though. He offered to bring water for our dog even adding ice on a hot day and coming back to refill the pups water bowl later. We got the smoked fish appetizer and tried 4 different tacos. Truly hard to pick a favorite but allow me to tease you with a description of two: "Fish & Chips" -- Succulent white fish lightly battered with Modelo negra and fried to a delicate crisp. Tender potatoes tossed in a zesty Mexican tartar sauce and garnished with fried, thinly grated potatoes. Like the name implies, this has all the components of Britain's national dish but in the form of an exquisite taco. "De Hongos" -- Savory trio of mushrooms (oyster, cremini, shiitake) sautéed in shallots, scallions and serranos, then dressed in a charred tomatillo salsa and topped with finely grated manchego cheese. The fried bits of manchego give it a nice crunch factor. Dripping with umami, this is the sexiest vegetarian taco you will ever wrap your lips around. Their margaritas are deliciously refined, made with agave wine, fresh juices & homemade syrups. Bartender was kind enough to let me try their hoja santa syrup (hoja santa is a culinary herb that can be found in Oaxaca) which had hints of anise and sassafras. This played well with the cucumber, lemon, cumin&salt rim in my drink. Chef/owner Pablo's madre graced us with her presence. She is so sweet and took the time to chat with us about the people and experiences that inspired the art and overall ambiance of the space. I arrived there at 12 pm on Sunday, right as they opened. There was a line out the door and we had to wait for about 35 minutes before my party of 2 was seated (I wish there was a waitlist, but you do stand in line to be seated). All the food we ordered was great -- I really do think you can't go wrong with any menu item. The smoked fish dip was delicious! They also had a hot sauce that was amazing. Do not sleep on this place; it's going to be the next big thing. These may be the best seafood tacos I have ever had. The balance of heat, texture, acid, salt - I cannot adequately describe how incredible this meal was. I'm so glad we checked it out. The taco de coco is a must get; it's crunchy, spicy and sweet at the same time, and the Mexican coleslaw with it is fire. The service was excellent - super helpful and gave us 10/10 recommendations. The inside is small, so either prepare to wait in line or go later in the evening. We had a beautiful view of the Coronado bridge at night. The decor is elegant and simple with a nautical theme. I've had at least 10 Baja fish tacos from different places in SD and really had high hopes for this place but this would be at the bottom of the list for me. I like how they advertise crispy potato's in their taco and there's no crispy potatoes but everyone else got crispy toppings? We arrived on a rainy Sunday afternoon at 1pm. We put our name on their list and we were told that there were 7 parties ahead of us. We waited outside for awhile and then decided to walk on Logan Avenue. We returned to Fish Guts at around 1:40pm. We were told that there were still 3 parties ahead of us. A few folks left the restaurant and then we were seated at around 2pm. Our stools were facing the window and it was a bit chilly. We ordered hibiscus tea, and four different kinds of tacos. They were out of the mushroom tacos and the fish dip. We got the fish n chips tacos, the swordfish, the coconut shrimp and the Estilo Baja. Each order comes with two tacos... everything was tasty and the service was helpful. When seats at the bar opened up, we asked to move because we were chilly and we were accommodated. We also ordered a second fish and chips tacos. (They're my favorite!) Overall, it was fun to dine at Fish Guts. It is very expensive for how small the tacos are, but they are delicious. Our party of 6 lined up 15 mins before opening on a Saturday and snagged indoor/outdoor counter spots. The place is small, I doubt they can seat more than 30 at a time. So, getting there early was crucial. I ordered the estilo baja, de coco, and de hongos. The mushroom one was delicious but the coconut shrimp was probably my favorite. I really like the batter on the Baja fish but wish they did not use the same slaw on both the baja fish and coconut shrimp -- my friend got the swordfish that had a jalapeño slaw that looked realllllyy good too. Our plates came out one by one so not everyone got to eat at the same time, but it also gave us time to chat over a leisurely 1.5 hr lunch, which probably didn't help the wait time for those still in line to get in. Still, the way they handle it guarantees your tacos are fresh out the kitchen, service was attentive, and we enjoyed multiple rounds of margaritas! I was hoping for more than tacos with the hype and name but can't take anything away from them when the tacos were so good. The service was super fast on a Wednesday afternoon. It was so salty that I took the slaw off the taco. The fish was fresh, and cooked perfectly. The last taco we tried was the coconut shrimp taco. Unfortunately that taco I didn't finish eating. The shrimp was over battered, and chewy. I wouldn't order that one again. It's a small building but I thought decorated nicely. Dog's were allowed but on the outside of the seating. Service was great! The bathroom is on the outside of the restaurant. Restroom was clean, and you do need a key to use it.
