The sweetest little family owned spot. Food was tasty and [[HIGHLIGHT]]the vibes were amazing.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Highly recommend!

Service was top notch, food was 5 stars, [[HIGHLIGHT]]ambiance was perfect, it's a nice little cozy hole in the wall.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Highly recommended! Trust me you won't regret it. Prices are almost unheard of for this area too! Can't wait to come back again!

My ABSOLUTE favorite NO FRILLS Sushi restaurant. Tom and Wendy are WONDERFUL, and their service and attentiveness to their customers outstanding. The fish is always fresh, ample cuts. Being a "Bento" I don't typically eat Bento so I can't say much about their bento boxes; but my Mom loves em. Of course she does, she was married to one. haa ha haah All kidding aside, Fish-n-Gari is a solid traditional Sushi restaurant, prices are reasonble, service is great, and fish is DELICIOUS. My fave is the Sukura roll, Nigiri Sake, and Butterfish. I'm pretty picky, so I stick with what I know and what I know is, when I'm looking for some great reasonbly priced FRESH Sushi - Fish-n-Gari is my go to place and it should be yours too. :^)

A great local sushi spot! Food: we ordered two dinner combinations. highlights were the spicy tuna roll, hamachi maki, chicken katsu, and chicken teriyaki. fish was fresh, portions were generous, and everything was delicious! Service: fantastic! we ordered take out online, but when we arrived our order wasn't ready yet. the kind folks there offered us hot tea while we waited Ambiance: such a cute spot! we'll be back to dine in soon

This is my go-to sushi spot! It may be basic, but I love their golden california roll and unagi maki. Each maki roll ranges from $5-$7 which is an absolute steal, and they are so delicious! Their signature rolls are also very filling at a great price. The owner is a very sweet and friendly man, and the restaurant is cozy and clean. I highly recommend dropping by if you're in the area!

Great Neighborhood Sushi Spot! Over a year ago (pre pandemic), towards the tail end of a long walk, I found myself starving and right in front of Fish N Gari on Polk. I walked in and had me a quick lunch which I enjoyed, but then I forgot all about the place because it is not near where I live. Then months later, during the pandemic, I was walking by again and I remembered about the good experience I had, and decided to get a to-go meal. I love Nigiri sushi and theirs I enjoyed very much, but Fish N Gari also offers a great selection of rolls. My favorit so far is the Red Dragon Roll, but if you are a daring eater, I suggest you try a few of their less "traditional" rolls; you will be pleasantly surprised. A few of my favorits are Snow Beauty Roll, Lazy Summer Roll and Romeo and Juliet Roll.

I live really close to this restaurant so I would definitely come back because of the convenience. I loved the rolls and I think they're reasonably priced but I did notice that they're typically smaller than rolls you see at other restaurants. I wouldn't mind paying a little bit more to get the larger sized rolls. The only reason why I knocked off a star was because of how small the rolls are. I don't think the rolls are that filling and I just want more!

Since moving back to SF last month I've been making my way through the neighborhood to find the spots I want to frequent. This is a spot worth frequenting. The gist: amazingly reasonable prices, quality service (my service here exceeded many other restaurants; tea refill without request, attentiveness to every detail); the food is carefully prepared and still comes out speedily; complimentary hot tea is set out immediately upon seating; unobtrusive but also immersive (there was a basketball game on the flatscreen above the sushi bar and other patrons with more athletic spirit than I have were engaging in hearty conversation about the coaches). The spicy tuna hand roll came out super fast and was plump with fresh and delicious spicy tuna; the humble avocado and cucumber roll was expertly presented. The maguro nigiri was buttery and fresh, and the green salad (for the sake of feeling culinarily virtuous), is dressed in a soy-based dressing and is the size of a huge bowl with avocado and nice cuts of cucumber. I really think in this neighborhood there are a lot of overrated restaurants with hype and this one is not that. They are a traditional and honest business model serving a customer's needs at a wonderful return. I'll be back here soon!

It was my first time here. The lady who is working there immediately brought hot tea but no pot to refill after that I ordered Chicken Teriyaki, the chicken was old made, served cold. I felt like it was frozen and they warmed it up but not thoroughly. She even brought the bill before I finish my food and ask for it. Very disappointed.

2 party platters, make sure to call a few hours ahead so they can prepare!
    Cindy X.

Ordered 2 party platters to go for a birthday and everyone loved it! The party platter came with various cuts of sashimi, nigiri, and rolls. The salmon sashimi my personal favorite, it was super fresh and reminded me my trip to Japan. The presentation was also really nice, I'll be ordering again for future gatherings!

I got a seasonal special donburi (Gouka Kani Donburi) as they shared they were adding new items to their menu. The crab on top of the rice was SO good and perfectly seasoned to go with the dish. All of the fresh sashimi was very thick, salmon was clean tasting and buttery. I have never tried the sweet shrimp but it may be my new favorite thing. All sides also perfectly complemented the main dish. Our server so sweet and thoughtful. She was very attentive and considerate throughout our meal. My friend's dishes all were very beautiful and tasted so nice too! The store is on the smaller side but can accommodate party of 4 comfortably. We tried a bunch of different things and I'm glad that we did because the nigiri was not the best thing on the menu. I would come back here for the other things like the box set (otoro, wagyu, uni, ikura). The agedashi tofu was the best I've ever had. The teacup steamed egg was presented well but for the price nothing really that special. I suspect the price is high because of the caviar & ikura. It's not bad, but it takes a while, it's small and not anything that stood out like the agedashi tofu or the other items. The service was really good. They provided a small dessert for us because we were celebrating an event, that was a nice touch. Overall, id come back but maybe not for an omakase or just nigiri.

There was also a layer of what seemed to be finely processed mushrooms under the ikura which added a nice texture. The egg yolk added a richness and creaminess throughout the dish. The karaage was fried well but it was very salty and sweet at the same time. Yosedofu is not my thing. Maybe I just don't like cold tofu but it's just tofu with ginger, scallions and bonito flakes. Negima was ok. A bit dry and very small piece. Tsukune was ok but they charge $3 for a sauce which is basically just an egg yolk. Tonkatsu felt like they boiled the pork chop and then fried it. Oden was very underwhelming. Thr mochi thing was unique but I didn't like it. One of the pieces was just a daikon that tasted like a daikon... They stopped serving lunch, a rotational place for business lunches and when entertaining visiting friends. I noticed a sign a few weeks ago that they started serving lunch again (started in April, as told by our waiter). I was happy that this is now an option for these lunches again. In studying the menu, the selection hasn't changed much though it is pared down a bit with a few of my favorite appetizers gone (shishito peppers). My go-to in the past was the business set lunch, still available and what I ordered on two business lunches on consecutive Fridays. It comes with choices for a two-course meal, not counting the provide bowl of miso soup (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=48&select=oIkVbbqPY0HWG9y3YbriEA) and a bowl of rice. Here's what I had: a. Yellowtail sashimi (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=rSCkN5J6l_tJ419JdnxrUg) with shallots and poached garlic ponzu - This is as I remember and a great start to this meal. b., 1st visit NY strip steak (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=4TTrlrBTj60xo_ejeBNg7A), medium rare, with sauteed Japanese mushrooms - I don't recall whether this was Wagyu or not prior to Covid but, with inflation since that time, it's still a pretty good deal at this price. It was hearty and the mushrooms were a good complement along with the bowl of rice. b., 2nd visit Black cod (4 oz) with mixed green salad - Sorry as the conversation was serious so I forgot to take a photo. I passed on this on my 1st meal but knew it would be my 2nd entree here. It was miso marinated with the meat being tender and flavorful. Again, great with rice. Do pay attention for bones (they are larger) as I got two on my piece. Shared dishes: a. Sweet corn with soy garlic butter (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=Fviru3AbJYA_41PQ8geaTg) - There are four to an order so one diner had an extra cob. The portions are perfect as a pre-meal or accompanying bite for our meals. We had this both lunches. b. Crispy brussel sprouts with mustard and bonito flakes (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=48&select=yUjFMqXOxfF-UyYN6ltybw) - We had this on our 1st lunch and, again, a nice dish to mix with rice. c. Salmon tataki (4 pc) with brown butter ponzu (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=I18uKPl-QG0wVQrUUWAglQ) - A lighter shared dish where the ponzu didn't overpower the salmon. On our first visit, there was one large table near the entrance occupied and scattering of tables with two diners. The following week, the dining room was about 2/3rd full and there were two waiters manning the dining room. Our waiters, two different ones for each lunch, were very professional and cordial. With the neighborhood offices filling up with workers onsite, the return of lunch service makes sense. Looking forward to dining here again.

Usually with these types of dishes, I'm concerned that it's too buttery or fishy, but this was spot on! Gyudon ($19) - egg looked like it was cooked beautifully. Katsu curry ($22) - good presentation, seemed to have quite a bit of rice. I didn't try the last two dishes, but I was told they were good. Nothing crazy special though. Personally, I think the noodle dish was the best. We also tried their Hokkaido cheesecake, and that was probably the only disappointing item. It wasn't as light and creamy as the ones I've had in Japan (LeTao will always be the gold standard in my heart). I ate a couple of bites and decided it just wasn't worth the calories. Service was friendly and I appreciate that there's outdoor dining. I saw a few furry friends, but if I didn't have pets, I would likely prefer to sit indoors. Seats seem more comfortable inside.

We walked into a refined but welcoming space where the sushi counter is the main focus, and the meal unfolds course by course in front of us. There is a sense of calm throughout the room, allowing the attention to stay on the chefs, the ingredients, and the details behind each dish without the distraction of a busy dining room. The omakase experience balances traditional sushi with more creative touches. Each course brings something different, from fresh sashimi and nigiri to warmer dishes like chawan mushi that add depth to the progression of the meal. The sushi highlights the quality of the fish while incorporating thoughtful flavor combinations, with dishes like scallop and the dry-aged fish courses standing out for their texture and seasoning. The sake pairing fits naturally into the experience, adding another layer without overpowering the food, and the sommelier's selections complement the progression of flavors across the meal. What makes Kusakabe memorable is the craftsmanship and pacing of the meal. The chefs take time to explain each course, making the experience feel personal rather than rushed. Sitting at the counter adds to the atmosphere because you get to see the precision and care that goes into every piece, from the way the rice is formed to the final brush of sauce on the fish. The pacing of the meal allows you to appreciate each course without feeling rushed, and the team's attention to detail creates a rhythm that keeps the meal engaging from start to finish. Kusakabe feels like a place made for special occasions, celebrations, or anyone looking for a more elevated Japanese dining experience. It combines technique, hospitality, and creativity in a way that makes the entire meal feel like an event rather than just a dinner. The balance of traditional and modern elements, along with the warmth of the service, leaves you with the sense of having experienced something complete and thoughtfully composed.

What an experience! We were celebrating an anniversary and planned a bit last minute, but were able…read moreto snag a reservation here pretty easily. Immediately, the ambiance and service was quite nice. We were seated at the table, but typically I enjoy sitting at the bar to watch the chefs make our food. The service was amazing and they were very attentive. They also offered to take photos and gave us a little gift of hojicha tea since we were celebrating. We got the omakase, which was massive and had 18 courses. They gave us a menu so we knew what to expect for each course, and we ordered some sake. The omakase was delicious and more traditional than other places, each course was so beautiful and delicately made. This is definitely a lot of food, I would recommend the petite omakase in the future as I was stuffed, but it was a great experience if you come hungry! Courses: - Chawan-mushi - super tasty and every bite was delicious and umami forward! - Otsumami - 7 seasonal appetizers presented in a beautiful box, there was a stuffed crab claw in there that was delicious - 4 kinds of sushi - each piece came out one at a time, the first piece was my absolute favorite and blew me away, it was a seared chutoro that immediately melts in your mouth and tastes smokey - Hamachi soup - very tasty and warming soup with hamachi inside, was perfect in between the sushi course - 4 kinds of sushi - A5 Waguyu shabu - this course was extra $10 pp but was so delicious, the wagyu was melt in your mouth and had some grated daikon on top in a ponzu dashi, the toppings help balance the meat so it's overwhelming since it does melt in your mouth, one of my favorite bites! - 4 kind of sushi - they brought out some really great sushis, including more chutoro and an unagi handroll, but I was so stuffed at this point that I felt I couldn't enjoy it as much - miso soup - this soup was so tasty and kind of revived me after all that food, it felt comforting and a great way to end - dessert- I got the hojicha ice cream in a waffle like cookie and it was delicious!
