First time back in decades to see the Christmas caroling. Heads up: you'll want (maybe even need) to make a reservation if visiting in December since the caroling tradition seems to run deep here. It was great enjoying your meal and hearing live caroling. They'll come around to your table too and take a song request. The service was a bit hectic inside as it's probably the busiest time of the year for them. Prime rib was tasty but I'd say The House of Prime Rib up north is still my #1. Creme brulee seemed to be the dessert to order and next time I'd want to try the chocolate souffle. They also had a gift card special where you get a bonus card to use later. That was nice to stack and then you can get more points with their VIP rewards program too. Excellent dining experience and service here at Five Crowns. The ambience was beautiful and comfortable. You'll definitely want to stay a while. We decided to do the dinner for two special they had- which included a crab cake appetizer, spring salad, prime rib (you could also choose salmon or a risotto), and hot fudge sundae. We were able to get mashed potatoes as our side instead of the creamed spinach or creamed corn. The only reason I took off one star is because their potatoes weren't as good compared to the outstanding quality of everything else we received. I loved the salad, crab cakes, complimentary bread and butter, prime rib, and the ice cream sundae. My husband also had the Russian river valley Pinot noir and the cocktail infused with smoke (I think it included the words 'red sky' and 'sailor'). I had sips of both drinks and they were very good. The sundae I think was my favorite part of the meal. At first I thought it wouldn't be special because it wasn't the chocolate soufflé. We had dinner here last year and had such a great experience, we made sure to book a holiday meal again this year and started an new annual tradition. When dining here you will feel like you're in a Charles Dickens movie, with all traditional Old English decor and Christmas carolers walking around and serenading the guests. The ambience really helps you get in the holiday spirit! The service was great as well! But the food takes takes this place to the next level. I had the English Cut prime rib dinner and my husband had the Henry VIII cut. And instead of appetizers we added extra sides of au gratin potatoes and Brussels sprouts. Everything was amazing and delicious! Sadly we were too stuffed for dessert and couldn't order the soufflé we were hoping to have, but that just means we'll have to go back again soon. Five Crowns is pretty much my go-to with my boyfriend for the past 2 years for nice dinners! You can't go wrong here. They take reservations, and the hosts are quick to seat you at your time. The servers are always attentive and lively, and the ambience is romantic. Inside, it's a bit dimly lit, and the you get English pub/steakhouse vibes. Normally, we park on the street and just walk to the restaurant (don't worry, we've never had to park too far!), but there's also valet right across Five Crowns' door. They'll start you off with fresh, warm dinner rolls with butter and salt on the side. You can ask for more! We usually get the prime rib chili cheese fries and calamari as starters. For the main, the prime rib is fabulous here, and I love it with the au jus and horseradish. I get the California cut with the 3 slices, and it's a good portion for me. You also get 2 sides to go with it, choosing from creamed corn, creamed spinach, and mashed potatoes. The creamed corn is quite addicting for us. This time I got creamed spinach as well, but I don't think I'd get it again. It's mixed with pork, and the flavor is a bit much for me. I'd probably double the corn if I could next time! Generally love this place but last night's experience left a really bad taste in our mouth. Who thought it was a good idea trying to have two tables (that don't exist during the rest of the year) directly across from their wildly loud event space during the holiday season? We were initially sat at one of two of these tables that also happens to be right next to the kitchen. After being told the other open tables were "reserved" despite us having made our own reservations a month in advance, a manager came over and eventually moved us to one of the many open tables inside the dining room. Dinner was solid as usual and our server was great, but not sure we're going to come back after this experience despite coming here every year for a birthday celebration and the carolers. To top it off, we saw the poor hostess try to sit multiple other parties in this seat throughout our dinner who also declined. Extremely disappointing that management seems more concerned about fitting as many people into the restaurant at the expense of the dining experience. read more

Wow so disappointing! It has been almost ten years since my last holiday dinner at the Five Crowns and probably my last. The decorations and carolers were on point but could not make up for the mediocre food and poor service. I do not mind spending for quality food and a good experience but they missed both marks. The Crown Cut in the past was a generous 1/2"+ piece of prime rib but what was delivered to the table was a very sad, thin piece of meat overwhelmed by the creamed spinach and the deflated, overcooked yorkshire pudding. Our other sides did not make it to the table until we were almost done but no matter, they were not worth the wait. The tiny dish of green beans had more garlic than beans and the mashed potatoes were dry and flavorless! The Jidori Chicken was passable but such an unappealing all beige plate of food. Other than the Pride of the Crowns salad, everything felt like a compromise to be endured so we could enjoy the carolers. Despite being seated right next to the service bar, drink delivery seemed to be a challenge. A martini we ordered sat languishing on the bar so I finally went up and asked the bartender if the drink was for our table. He seemed supremely annoyed that I interrupted his phone scrolling. The overall impression of the service was sloppy, uninterested, and not well trained in what should be fine dining. The only thing elevated about The Five Crown's these days are the prices. Dinner for 5 with cocktails and two bottles of decent red wine was $800 not including tip. Such a shame that the service and the food detracted from the ambience. read more

My wife, kids, and in-laws dined at Five Crowns on 01/04, and we had a delightful experience. We arrived early but we were seated somewhat promptly. (Make sure you have a reservation!) We sat in the main dining room and had a very cheery server. Wow! Nothing flustered her. It was a busy night, but she was cool, calm, and collected. The service was awesome. The food was incredible. Almost all of us got the prime rib, and it's what you would expect from Lawry's. The server was even so kind to offer fresh horseradish by itself as an addition to the cream-based version, and my father-in-law (who is a horseradish lover) loved it! The creamed corn was oh-so-amazing and went well with the meat and mashed potatoes. Yes, the price of the food here is on the pricier side. (I used a couple of Visa gift cards we received on Christmas to pay for some of our meal.) But don't let price deter you from this place, especially if it's for a special occasion. They will take great care of you at Five Crowns. But the worst part for us was that we left a thoughtful review about our experience in Open Table and received a response that seemed to be from a BOT. No sincerity or caring on their end or desire to make it right. Five Crowns is located conveniently off of E Coast Highway in Corona Del Mar. Parking is close across the street but you may be able to park for free on E coast highway also. The restaurant posts a warm English cottage atmosphere. Fireplaces abound gives that feeling of comfort on a cold rainy day when I showed up. It's a high end restaurant with higher prices but the food was worth the cost. They specialize is prime rib with about 4 different size cuts. Our waiter was excellent giving us options and opinions on what to get. With the prime rib they give you a good amount of au jus and what they called horseradish. The only downside side was the horseradish wasn't really strong but was sweet and not great for my taste buds. The French onion soup was exactly what you want with plenty of baked cheese (almost a dinner in itself). Beer list wasn't very big and they seemed to be out of some but they had specialty drinks and a good wine list. Neither of us had been to 5-Crowns in ages... like 25 years... We loved it! Our server was Shari (pronounced Sharrrrri... like sorry but with a Shar). She was great. When we were undecided on drinks, salads, and me on entrée, she guided us. We started with a classic, delicious Old Fashioned and a Feliz Navidad. I seldom order a tequila drink but the Feliz Navidad sounded and tasted delicious, and Shari recommended it-thanks Shari. Reposado tequila, pomegranate, GM, cinnamon honey. It sounded a bit sweet, but the other ingredients mellowed the tequila. We split a house signature salad which was called pride of crown, or similar. It had walnuts, gruyere cheese, croutons, on a lovely mixed greens and vinaigrette. We had just recently made wedge salads at home so we didn't opt for that one, although it looked good on other diners' plates. For entrees, he had a big prime rib, I don't recall which one but it was big and tasty. His sides were creamed spinach and mashed potatoes. It also came with Yorkshire pudding, au jus, and creamed horseradish; he was pleased with his choices and the quality. I had butternut squash risotto, with an added lobster tail. It was luscious and richer than I'm used to, which was good because it made me stop. For dessert, we had the Chocolate Soufflé. It was good, but not special. A couple things we weren't crazy about but that wouldn't stop us from going back... with wine by the glass, there's no price break when upgrading from 6 to 9 ozs. I understand the per oz pricing, but prices seemed to round up for 9 oz vs. down. Seems like it should work the other way... Where we were seated, there was a draft behind us, I believe coming from the bar. Just when we were about to ask to be reseated, the fan stopped. My hair was blowing from the draft, it was intermittently drafty; it wasn't good. I kept my coat on most of the night, which was a bit uncomfortable. Overall, we had a great dining experience. My pod and I celebrated a quadfecta of birthdays last night. It had to be a 5:30pm reservation due to the size of our party (8). Don't scan the QR code for drinks because the server said there's a lag in updating. So we ordered off the more limited paper menu that was distributed. We ate family style and ordered steak tartare, Brussels sprouts, French fries, shishito peppers, two prime rib (we cut them ourselves to avoid the $8 split entree fee each among us 8), crab cakes, mushrooms, beet and burrata salad, chocolate souffles and 2 bottles of Cab. The food was delightful and the ambiance was already festive for the holidays. The service was attentive in the beginning, but then the server changed midway without telling us, and then it slowed down considerably as more diners came during regular dinner hours. However slower he was, he made up for it by rolling out four towering strawberry shortcake squares with candles on top! There's $7 parking across the street on Poppy. After passing by this place so many times, we decided to celebrate my sister's birthday and chose the set menu where we picked out appetizers, main course , and dessert. We all got the lobster bisque which was rich and delicious. When the prime rib came, however, we all felt that it was way way too rich and not as much flavor as we'd like. Lastly, the crème brûlée was so terrible! The custard was so thick, not smooth like how it's supposed to be. Overall, this place fell below our expectations. I've been wanting to eat here for years. Tonight it became a reality and it did not disappoint. I was invited for a business dinner with my co-workers and their customer (they actually needed a third wheel this time ). We had a room to ourselves with a fireplace. Hands down, best prime ribs in town. On par with Lawrys but less driving (if you're in oc, of course) and less pricey. I've tried the Henry VIII but that was way too much for me... too much for me even on the 1st day coming off my 1-month veggie diet. So unless you're really into large portion steaks... Anyway, the Crown cut is my go-to. Sometimes even the smaller California cut is enough. My choice of sides are always creamed spinach and mashed potatoes. Spinach is just creamy enough and the gravy goes perfect with the mashed potatoes. Also tried the lobster tail once but nothing special about it, recommend just going with steak. I ordered the steak sandwich and it wasn't good, had grizzle fat, no buttery toasted bun and the meat was cut too thick. Returned back to Five Crowns. My wife and I both had the beef braised short ribs over parpardelle pasta. The portions were huge and we had to take half of our plates home. Could have used a little more wine sauce if that was used with the braising but otherwise it was fall of the fork good. We ordered two wedge salads and Brussel sprouts- both were good. We also ordered the chocolate soufflé that came with whip cream, it was good but much better with the vanilla ice cream we ordered. Coffee was good but was lukewarm. If you are looking for an authentic British meal with the class of Lawry's Prime Rib and 'ol English cottage type architecture that is actually 100 years old (was at one time a brothel then a converted home that had rooms rented out), then go to Corona Del Mar in the city of Newport Beach to let your taste buds receive the royal treatment at Five Crowns. Valet parking available for $8 located conveniently across the street, with the main entrance that has a ramp available to the front door and there you will step into Five Crowns to have your royal dinner. I have been here before to the 2nd floor to a friend's 40th birthday party in 2018. We had a reservation for 5 people at 4:30 pm on 5/7/2023 and were seated at table 11 which was a great booth to accommodate our party comfortably, fit for a King or Queen. We had a toddler with us and he recieved a kids menu that was a coloring page and included a set of 4 primary color crayons. We started with appetizers: crispy calamari and bone marrow (from Side Door). Both were delicious starters to our meal along with the complimentary dinner rolls with unsalted whipped butter and salt on the side. My son had the crispy chicken fingers with french fries ($13) and I ordered the Surf & Turf meal (savings of $14) which came with a salad, lobster tail, California cut of prime rib that came with a choice of 2 sides which I chose creamed corn & creamed spinach. I chose my prime rib to be cooked medium well and put the au jous and horseradish on top as well as the Lawry's seasonings available on my table. For dessert, we ordered the chocolate souffle which took 20 minutes to prepare and because we were celebrating my son's birthday, he received a complimentary strawberry cake. Our server, Sarah, was helpful & friendly and even the hostess was nice enough to humor my son by giving him a small bag of goodies to play with. I highly recommend this restaurant if you love prime rib and if not, know that there are other entrees available. This is also great for the holiday season in December when they have carolers to sing Christmas songs. Also, you can make reservations at least 30 days in advance. The women's restroom is located in the bar area of Five Crowns and the men's restroom is located in the bar area of Side Door. As a Lawry VIP member, I received a complimentary bottle of Lawry's Seasoned Salt and $25 towards my next meal. Incredibly disappointing for Mother's Day brunch. The menu was uninspiring, the food lackluster, bland and of poor quality. Your mimosas were served in a thimble size coupe and all was overpriced. On top of that the server was passive aggressive and unpleasant. We don't mind paying for beautiful food, a great experience, and top-notch service, but this was equal to having a steak at Denny's at best. As a business you can't just rely on being a Lawry's steakhouse and that you are based on an English-style dining experience. In this current climate you have to elevate your food options, the food quality, and the service. This is our second experience at Five Crowns and both times we were underwhelmed. Lawry's quality in Newport Beach. Every time I'm in Corona Del Mar I would pass by Five Crowns and think of Bravo's The Real Housewives of Orange County and Fox's The O.C. No matter what your conception of OC is, Five Crowns is a classic and I finally got a chance to eat here thanks to Orange County Restaurant Week. The OC Restaurant Week's menu featured a lot of Five Crowns' greatest hits, but honestly I was surprised at how concise the regular menu was... I guess that means they know what they're doing and want to keep things efficient. You'd be a fool to go to Five Crowns and NOT order the Prime Rib; the OC Restaurant Week special was a California Cut (6 ounces) but we weren't going to drive all the way down to Corona Del Mar just to be basic. We got the 10 ounce Crown Cut for $9 more and made a proper meal out if it! Besides the size of the cut, the Orange County Restaurant Week dinner special is a good deal and a fine way to experience Five Crowns for the first time. For $60 you get an appetizer, an entree, and your choice of dessert. To start I picked the Shrimp Corn & Jalapeño Fritters served with a remoulade sauce, a special item not on their regular menu that I would definitely recommend over the Pride of the Crowns Salad or the Green Garlic & Pea Soup. As I mentioned before, if given the choice between Roasted Prime Ribs of Beef, Crispy Skatewing, Smoked Mary's Chicken, or Roasted Cauliflower Steak, it's a no brainer... especially when you can spring for a 10 oz. Crown Cut for nine dollars! But how was the meat quality? I consider myself a connoisseur of Prime Rib, having devoured the Cadillac of beef preparations from Coast to Coast, consuming countless restaurant and home cooked variations, as well as having done a few roasts myself for the Winter holidays. For my money, I don't think there's a restaurant that does Prime Rib better in OC than Five Crowns... and yes, that includes Summit House and Gulliver's. The meat quality simply can't be beat and there's just something about the Lawry's family of restaurants where you know everything will be top knotch. The Orange County Restaurant Week deal comes with your choice of C.C. Brown's Hot Fudge Sundae, Peach Tart, and Valrhona Molten Lava Cake. The C.C. Brown's Hot Fudge Sundae is a classic that I've never had before so that was my pick; the toasted almonds and whipped cream were a nice complement to the vanilla ice cream, with the fudge so thick and decadent, it ended up solidifying with every scoop. Definitely a fun dessert if you like to mix hot and cold textures. All in all, from service to food quality to overall ambience, Five Crowns is that picture perfect Old OC classic that really stands the test of time and the Restaurant Week deal is a great way to sample the menu and decide if return trips are in order. If you love Prime Rib, you have to give Five Crowns a try... it's clearly the gold standard for me in OC. read more

We came once again for our anniversary. Our first time here was 1982. The last 5 years we have been coming back and we love it. The food, service and ambiance is off the charts. Dino, the manager was so kind and accommodating. What amazing service. Our server Ryan and the lovely lady he was training were fantastic. We were trying to avoid the Valentine's Day crowd so we decided to rent the whole section of the Green House. Just kidding, that would probably cost us our 6 months mortgage. hehehe Me and my hubby went there on a Monday night a week before Valentine's Day. I've seen the Green House section where the roof and the wall are glass. I wanted to dine there only. However, that night, it was closed. I felt sad. I told the hostess that the Green House was one of the reasons why I wanted to dine there. Luckily, she made it happen and we sat and enjoyed the Green House for ourselves. The lights were dimmed as they were not meant to be open which actually made the place very romantic. Our server was a bit embarrassed that the Green House (lights) was not ready but he kept his cool and gave us the best service. I didn't get a hint of any stress from him even though we were the only patrons in that area and it was out of his way. I was taking lots of pictures and videos and he waited patiently. I don't really eat meat (I'm a flexible pescatarian) but based on my husband, he said that the prime rib there was delicious. I had lobsters and it tasted fresh and yummy. We ordered the creamed spinach and corn as the sides but they were a bit small in portion size. I truly appreciated that the hostess made it possible for us to dine at the Green House. I am sorry that I didn't get her name. I think she's tall and blonde. We tried to look for her when we were exiting but she wasn't there anymore. read more

We went to Five Crowns during Christmas time, and I'm just getting around to writing this review now. Christmas at Five Crowns is magical. The minute you walk in, you see all of the sparkling white lights and Christmas tree. Their restaurant is attached to Side Door, and they are both very cozy and quaint restaurants. Valet parking is available across the street, or you can find street parking. We made reservations on Open Table a few weeks in advance. When we arrived, we were seated right away. Service was spectacular in the beginning, but quickly went downhill after our food arrived. I'm not sure why that is, but our main server went MIA for a long time, and no one stepped in to take her place. We had to wave other servers down when we needed something. For that reason, I'm dropping this review from 4 stars to 3. My husband & I both ordered the Crown Cut prime rib for $46. It comes with Yorkshire pudding, horseradish and your choice of 2 sides. I got the creamed corn and the potatoes au gratin. The prime rib was good, but I've had better (and cheaper with better quality). The prime ribs are actually from Lawry's, so you'd think it would be better. My overall feeling is that it's overpriced for what you get. I would probably not return anytime soon, only because there are so many other restaurants in OC within that price range that are better in taste and overall value. read more
