Not quite sure what happened to this place. I used to go once a year and loved it. This time I felt like I ate at a cafeteria in San Francisco. The English Cut Prime Rib was completely flavorless and floating in water. The cream of corn that I ordered was somehow replaced with a glob of soaked spinach. The chocolate soufflé was so dry and un exciting. I've had better desserts cooked in an EZ Bake oven. The food took a couple lifetimes to arrive and the waitresses used to wear cute costumes but now just the waiter does. This place used to be one of the finest restaurants in OC. Came here to celebrate a birthday and the food was great, for the most part. We had the jumbo shrimp cocktail and crab cakes for an appetizer and the lamb chops, filet mignon and crown cut with roasted mushrooms as entrees. The crown cut was mostly fat which was a tad bit disappointing. The server asked if we wanted a hot fudge, I thought this was for the birthday celebration but we were charged for it, oh well. Prior to taking off, the server dropped off Prosecco and mentioned that it was to celebrate the birthday. While this was a kind gesture, it was unfortunate because we mentioned no alcohol when he took our drink orders in the beginning since one person (birthday boy) at the table doesn't drink alcohol. We even asked if they have non-alcoholic beer when he took our drink order. The speakeasy they share the building with did make us some great mocktails and had a nice ambiance. I'm surprised I hadn't already written a review here. We got married here ten years ago and have been back to celebrate almost every anniversary outside of the pandemic. What was particularly nice about this year's visit was that there was a wedding reception taking place while we were there. It made us reflect on our own ceremony and reception over a decade ago! The service was top notch, the food was great and the restaurant itself has such fun theming. This occasion was no different. Shari took care of us and was prompt despite being split over several tables. There were a couple of lags in service, but she was attentive to us and transparent when she had to help other tables first--totally fair. The food was great-we split the Henry VIII cut , the calamari, Brussels sprouts and the sundae and ordered our own soups--the lobster bisque and the French onion. The calamari was a little salty for my taste but wifey loved it. It was lightly battered and crunchy. I loved the French onion soup. It was hot and so cheesy! The prime rib is always solid here, though the meat was a little fattier than I would've hoped. In splitting the entree, there's a $9 split plate charge but they give you a full set of additional sides on each plate so it's not only fair but a good deal! We finished by splitting the CC Brown sundae which was good but not great. They also brought us a complimentary cake for our anniversary which was nice but not remarkable. We went to 5 Crowns for Christmas Eve dinner yesterday. It was the first time in about 10 years since I have been there. 10 years ago my sister and I went and had a really lovely dinner in the dining room. Not sure why I haven't been back but my husband and I had been to Flemings for Thanksgiving and wanted something different this Christmas. So the only reservation we could get was at 1:30 p.m. When we arrived the dining room was maybe half full, a couple of other parties arrived when we did and we were all seated promptly. The problem - only my husband and I were seated in the SideDoor - all by our selves - waaaaaayyyyy in the back. The photo speaks for itself. Service was really good. We were in and out within an hour - got there at 1:30 and left by 2:20. $200 later - food was just okay. Lobster bisque had very little lobster (Flemings at Thanksgiving was better). The mashed potato and creamed corn sides were really good but the prime rib was very bland. It really needed more flavor and more spices. But do you REALLY want to know what the problem was at 5 Crowns yesterday? Well - when I got up to use the restroom and walked through the VERY empty SideDoor into the bustling and beautifully decorated Dining Room that was only MAYBE 2/3rds full with LOTS of empty tables it hit me - they REALLY didn't want my black husband in the dining room because they sat us wayyyy in the back of the VERY empty SideDoor all by ourselves. As I walked back by the hostess on my way back to the table I casually and politely asked her why we were all by ourselves in the SideDoor and she got very flustered and said that the SideDoor and main dining room were being treated the same and equal on Christmas Eve. Again - then WHY WERE WE THE ONLY ONES SEATED IN THE SIDEDOOR? Just in case you didn't figure it out yet - I am a white blond woman, and my husband is black. I didn't make a scene or push the issue because I didn't want to make my husband uncomfortable - and I don't come to this conclusion easily or lightly - but it was pretty obvious what happened yesterday and why we were all by ourselves in the second tier dining area. We are both upper middle class dress like it, I had a Louis Vuitton bag for what it's worth... It's 2023 but didn't feel like it yesterday. My guess is that this review will be filtered out - but we shall see. Oh it goes without saying that we will never go back to such an unwelcoming place. read more

I miss the old British outfits the staff used to wear, but the food continues to be great here, as well as the service. And I don't care what anyone says, the California cut is more than enough for me. Add some Yorkshire pudding and creamed spinach, and you've got a meal that dreams are made of. Last time I was here, we branched out and tried some of the appetizers: the crab cake and octopus were both terrific (who would've thought seafood would be good at a British steakhouse, but it is). If you have a preference re: sitting inside where it's darker and more old-fashioned, or outside on the patio, make sure to reserve and request early. And speaking of the patio, be aware that once in a while there will be a big party out there and that can sometimes screw up all the timing of your order. So for the love of all that is good and holy, cut into your steak before your server leaves and make sure it's to your liking. We dined on Saturday September 14th. We Originally had reservations at the Side Door and arrived early. We were told no tables were available however they found us a lovely table next door at The Five Crowns! Lucky us!!! We were seated in Patti's section. I have been going to Lawry's in Beverly Hills for over 50 years and never had service like this. Even her assistant was exceptional! Her recommendations were excellent! Everything was superb from the Prosecco, Russian River Pinot, lobster bisque, onion soup fondue with Gruyère, warm sour dough bread, whipped unsalted butter with a side of Malden salt, perfectly prepared prime rib, creamed spinach and the chocolate soufflé. We made reservations for outside dining due to Covid-19. Massive space outside, I think they're sharing space with another restaurant and bar as they blended menus. We had the Crown Cut 10oz prime rib. You get to choose 2/3 sides: mashed potato, cream of spinach or cream of corn. I wish they were unlimited like some other prime rib restaurants. I really enjoyed the cut as it was cooked well and had great flavors, I feel it was missing that last seasoning to really make it an A+. Have been going to Five Crowns for many years, Prime Rib had always been consistent and delicious, Last night the prime rib was horrible, The Crown Cut was served with a bone in and had so much marble ( fat ) that the amount of meat to be eaten would be about four ounces, The english cut our friends had was so fatty and gritty they did not eat it and would not even consider taking home. She refunded the cost of my prime rib and asked that I come back to the restaurant to try it again. She assured me that I would not be disappointed. Great service and presentation with amazing food. Definitely the best prime rib I've ever had! I didn't expect desert to be that good but it was amazingly delicious. All meals had perfect texture with right temperature and I was able to enjoy them melt slowly in my mouth. Very reasonable for the great atmosphere. My English Mum, who often made English Yorkshire pudding, was very disappointed in their 'version' of Yorkshire pudding. My husband was not impressed with his meal either. Dined at Five Crowns restaurant with 6 other people. Speaking for myself. I was disappointed as was my wife. I ordered the Wedge salad and was very bland and just no flavor. I ordered English cut prime rib and swear it was more like bottom roast or at least pot roast. It very disappointed in the quality. My wife had petite filet mignon and said it was very salty. I guess I expected better quality from this popular restaurant. We had great service. We probably won't go back for a long while. Sorry for the lackluster review but we were surprised that the dinner was not better . Also just learned another person add the pop pie and said she could not eat it. Recently ate at Five Crowns. Was really looking forward to Prime Rib dinner. Very disappointed! Ordered the large bone in cut and received a piece of meat one third the size of the bone for $97. Should have said something at the time but I'm not one to complain. I just won't return. I've been to Lawry's in Chicago many times and this establishment is woefully not in the same category. Over the last 5 years my house has become the venue to host Thanksgiving and Christmas. Wanting a break from it I told my parents we're going to celebrate this year at Five Crowns. My mom is a vegetarian so I e-mailed the manager asking if their preset holiday menu will have any vegetarian choices. He said they'll have a vegetarian risotto and it's his personal favorite thing on the menu. I was also told reservations could not be made until the day after Thanksgiving. The phones opened at 9am that day and it was like getting concert tickets. I had to keep redialing to get through the busy tone. When I finally got through around 9:30 it was already booked except a few spots! I went with 4pm. Xmas Eve we valet part and walk in the door to be greeted by beautiful Christmas decorations, the smells of prime rib, and the sounds of Christmas carolers. The carolers dressed in Victoria era clothing table to table taking requests where they sung beautiful renditions of classic and modern songs accompanied by bells. They kept the volume down where it was wonderful to hear and didn't prevent dinner conversations. My dad and I both had Buffalo Trace bourbon cocktails and my wife had some fruity concoction. To start my dad and I had the lobster bisque. My wife and mom had the "pride of the crowns" which was butter lettuce, bacon, toasted walnuts, gruyere cheese, and herbs de Provence dressing. Great start to the meal. Everybody enjoyed what they had. For dinner my wife and I both ordered the crown cut (10 oz) prime rib with au jus, horseradish, Yorshire pudding, mashed potatoes, and creamed spinish for me, creamed corn for my wife. We also ordered a side of their mac-n-cheese to share. Perfect meal. The prime was fantastic with hardly any fat. Seasoned perfectly. I loved the side dishes. To me it tasted identical as if we went to Lawry's. You're getting the same quality without the drive. My mom had the risotto which came with mushrooms, brussels sprouts, fennel, and parmigiano. I took a bite of it and was amazed how good it was. I would definitely order it myself during a return visit. It was not an after thought. My mom loved the dish. My dad got the Roasted Goose with wild grains, mushrooms, cherries, brussels sprouts leaves, and he got a side of creamed spinach. The goose looked like a cross between beef and duck with really crispy skin. Dad and I both had Cabernet Sauvignon by Katherine Vineyard to accompany the meal. My wife had a glass of Tempranillo. Truly a perfect experience for the holiday. The food, service, and atmosphere was 100% perfection and I think we'll be making this a tradition going forward. read more

When we arrived, the restaurant was closed with a note on the door "Closed Due to a Power Failure" We drove a long distance to get there, and they did not even have the courtesy to call to let us know they were having problems. The food was just decent. We've been here a few years back and quality has definitely declined. They're known for their prime ribs, but the meat was tough and lots of tendons. We also ordered a fish and chips. It was 3 small pieces that were super oily on top of a large bowl of fries, definitely doesn't look like high end restaurant quality. Their creamed corn is supposed to be famous too, but it came out warm and goopy. Our server was great, however the people assisting him was horrible. While the service was good, the kitchen was slow. 1.5 hours to get our food from the time we ordered, 2-plates sent back because the meat was cold, and 2 others were too hungry to wait and ate their meal warm. But the restaurant had no problems mixing drinks fast. Could not be more disappointed. Even the Christmas carolers were hiding. A 3 hour waste of time and money.
