I have gone to Lawry's, Tam o'shanter and now Five Crowns and I have to say Five Crowns is my favorite. Pros - Staff is super friendly - awesome ambiance - Food was amazing - Caesar salad is nicely tossed and nice to have before a heavy steak - Had the Henry VIII Prime which is huge and was perfectly done. - Also tried some 45 day aged Prime ribs and it's was amazing. It is definitely worth it too bad it's only limited time item. - As for the sides they were great. I tried the spinach and corn but I think next time I will go with the corn and mashed potatoes. - Desert was amazing if you like dark chocolate the chocolate soufflé is amazing. My son had the English trifle and cleaned his plate but it's a little too sweet for me. Cons - Lobster bisque was a little on the heavy side and really had no lobster chunks. It is a think soup and tiny pieces here and there. Overall flavor was very good, but I don't know It left me expecting more. read more

Another great meal at this wonderful and charming restaurant during the Christmas holidays. We had a party of 4 and all had the Crown Cut of Prime Rib. All the sides were excellent. I had the creamed spinach and mashed potatoes. Others had the creamed corn. What makes this time of year even more special are the Carolers with handbell's. We sat in the main dining room as it is more cozy than other areas in the restaurant. If you make your reservations at 5, you most likely will get 3 rounds of Christmas Caroling. read more

We both had the California cut prime rib dinner, and it brought back memories of coming here since I was a child. We both ordered the prime rib medium rare, and it was to die for. The service was excellent. For desert, we shared their dark chocolate soufflé, also a hit!!! My suggestion, make a reservation on open table or call them. Because of the pandemic, patio dining only or take out. This place never disappoints. The food is consistently great, and the service was well done. My Mom was a true Brit and loved going to dinner at Five Crowns. When she was alive, we ate there frequently. Mom passed away a few years ago and until tonight we had not been back. As this was my husband's 81st birthday, we thought an evening at Five Crowns would be wonderful. We could not have been more wrong. We arrived on time for our 7PM reservation and were seated at 7:15PM. About 20 minutes later a waitress finally came over and said that she was super busy and would we like some water? That was all we were offered after 20 minutes - water. It was at least 15 minutes more before she took our order. Her excuse was that she was the only waitress in the entire room serving people. We had been there almost an hour before our salads arrived. No bread was offered and when we finally asked for it, it took several minutes to arrive. My steak was lukewarm and kind of greasy. The mushrooms were somewhat inedible and served in a bowl without a spoon to dish them out. When the waitress finally came over halfway through our main course she asked " Is everything wonderful?". We replied "No". She did not offer to do anything or even to respond to our comment, but asked if we were going to order a soufflé for dessert because if we were, we had to let her know now. All in all, it was well over two hours to eat a very mediocre meal with a waitress that was basically non existent and obviously did not care about whether or not we were enjoying our meal. When you consider that the tab was over $200.00, we really felt like we could have gone to Denny's and gotten better service. We have never done this before, but I was so annoyed that on the way out I asked to speak with the manager, Dino. When we told him about our experience, he acted appalled and told us that if we came back to please mention his name and he would make it up to us. If he had been on the floor at anytime during our meal we would have spoken to him before leaving, but there were no managers to be seen at anytime during our meal. Suffice it to say, my Mother would roll over in her grave at the experience we had tonight at one of her favorite restaurants. I feel terrible that my husband at 81 had to experience his birthday celebration this way and it goes without saying that we will be looking for a new dining experience after this. read more

My wife and I came here recently for the first time to celebrate our second wedding anniversary and couldn't have had a better experience. Shari was WONDERFUL and gave us great menu and drink recommendations and made us feel so special during our visit. The food was equally amazing (we started with the yummy Caesar salads, my wife ordered the salmon and I had the crown cut prime rib. We also had the creamed spinach, creamed corn and mashed potatoes. We ended the our meal with the bread pudding and an extra surprise English trifle, courtesy of Shari. We loved everything!). My wife's favorite cocktail is an old fashioned and she said theirs was one of the best she's ever had. The atmosphere was so cozy and beautiful, especially during this holiday season. They even had very talented Christmas carolers who came by our table to sing my wife's favorite, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. I've eaten here every year for the last 15 years. It's always been great and I enjoy my meal and service every time I come. I've always been a fan of the original Lawry's, Tam O'Shanter, the Carvery and Five Crowns. I miss the old British outfits the staff used to wear, but the food continues to be great here, as well as the service. And I don't care what anyone says, the California cut is more than enough for me. Add some Yorkshire pudding and creamed spinach, and you've got a meal that dreams are made of. Last time I was here, we branched out and tried some of the appetizers: the crab cake and octopus were both terrific (who would've thought seafood would be good at a British steakhouse, but it is). If you have a preference re: sitting inside where it's darker and more old-fashioned, or outside on the patio, make sure to reserve and request early. And speaking of the patio, be aware that once in a while there will be a big party out there and that can sometimes screw up all the timing of your order. So for the love of all that is good and holy, cut into your steak before your server leaves and make sure it's to your liking. If it's not, just send it back and they'll be happy to get you another one. Street parking or valet next door. read more

Not quite sure what happened to this place. I used to go once a year and loved it. This time I felt like I ate at a cafeteria in San Francisco. The English Cut Prime Rib was completely flavorless and floating in water. The cream of corn that I ordered was somehow replaced with a glob of soaked spinach. The chocolate soufflé was so dry and un exciting. I've had better desserts cooked in an EZ Bake oven. The food took a couple lifetimes to arrive and the waitresses used to wear cute costumes but now just the waiter does. This place used to be one of the finest restaurants in OC. We made reservations for outside dining due to Covid-19. Massive space outside, I think they're sharing space with another restaurant and bar as they blended menus. We had the Crown Cut 10oz prime rib. You get to choose 2/3 sides: mashed potato, cream of spinach or cream of corn. I wish they were unlimited like some other prime rib restaurants. I really enjoyed the cut as it was cooked well and had great flavors, I feel it was missing that last seasoning to really make it an A+. I'm surprised I hadn't already written a review here. We got married here ten years ago and have been back to celebrate almost every anniversary outside of the pandemic. What was particularly nice about this year's visit was that there was a wedding reception taking place while we were there. It made us reflect on our own ceremony and reception over a decade ago! The service was top notch, the food was great and the restaurant itself has such fun theming. This occasion was no different. Shari took care of us and was prompt despite being split over several tables. There were a couple of lags in service, but she was attentive to us and transparent when she had to help other tables first--totally fair. The food was great-we split the Henry VIII cut , the calamari, Brussels sprouts and the sundae and ordered our own soups--the lobster bisque and the French onion. The calamari was a little salty for my taste but wifey loved it. It was lightly battered and crunchy. I loved the French onion soup. It was hot and so cheesy! The prime rib is always solid here, though the meat was a little fattier than I would've hoped. In splitting the entree, there's a $9 split plate charge but they give you a full set of additional sides on each plate so it's not only fair but a good deal! We finished by splitting the CC Brown sundae which was good but not great. They also brought us a complimentary cake for our anniversary which was nice but not remarkable. All in all, loved our visit not only for the nostalgia. Can't wait to come back. read more

We went to 5 Crowns for Christmas Eve dinner yesterday. It was the first time in about 10 years since I have been there. 10 years ago my sister and I went and had a really lovely dinner in the dining room. Not sure why I haven't been back but my husband and I had been to Flemings for Thanksgiving and wanted something different this Christmas. So the only reservation we could get was at 1:30 p.m. When we arrived the dining room was maybe half full, a couple of other parties arrived when we did and we were all seated promptly. The problem - only my husband and I were seated in the SideDoor - all by our selves - waaaaaayyyyy in the back. The photo speaks for itself. Service was really good. We were in and out within an hour - got there at 1:30 and left by 2:20. $200 later - food was just okay. Lobster bisque had very little lobster (Flemings at Thanksgiving was better). The mashed potato and creamed corn sides were really good but the prime rib was very bland. It really needed more flavor and more spices. But do you REALLY want to know what the problem was at 5 Crowns yesterday? Well - when I got up to use the restroom and walked through the VERY empty SideDoor into the bustling and beautifully decorated Dining Room that was only MAYBE 2/3rds full with LOTS of empty tables it hit me - they REALLY didn't want my black husband in the dining room because they sat us wayyyy in the back of the VERY empty SideDoor all by ourselves. As I walked back by the hostess on my way back to the table I casually and politely asked her why we were all by ourselves in the SideDoor and she got very flustered and said that the SideDoor and main dining room were being treated the same and equal on Christmas Eve. Again - then WHY WERE WE THE ONLY ONES SEATED IN THE SIDEDOOR? Just in case you didn't figure it out yet - I am a white blond woman, and my husband is black. I didn't make a scene or push the issue because I didn't want to make my husband uncomfortable - and I don't come to this conclusion easily or lightly - but it was pretty obvious what happened yesterday and why we were all by ourselves in the second tier dining area. We are both upper middle class dress like it, I had a Louis Vuitton bag for what it's worth... It's 2023 but didn't feel like it yesterday. My guess is that this review will be filtered out - but we shall see. Oh it goes without saying that we will never go back to such an unwelcoming place. read more

My husband and I love coming here occasionally. This past Sunday, we came specifically for the Akaushi beef prime rib that they advertised for. The waiter even encouraged us to get it, and we were very excited since we came for the special menu. Soon after, the waiter came back saying they were out, which was hard to understand because the special menu was supposed to go on till Monday and we were at the restaurant at 6 pm on a Sunday, so it's not like it was even close to closing time. It's events like this that really disappoint you as customers. My friend and I celebrate our birthdays each year by going out for a nice dinner. Based on the reviews, we were excited to celebrate at 5 Crowns this year. Based on the comments and reviews, we had high expectations for our experience. The restaurant called to confirm the reservation AND that we were celebrating TWO birthdays. The restaurant was beautifully decorated for the holiday season. We were seated at our table on time. Our waiter brought out bread and water. I was surprised to see that my bread plate was dirty. It was quickly replaced. My friend told the waiter that her napkin felt damp. It's possible that he didn't hear her but she had to ask twice for a new napkin. In spite of these snafus we were determined to have a good experience. If I was rating on food alone, it would be 5 stars. The lobster bisque and prime rib was superb; however, we were quite disappointed that in spite of our birthdays being confirmed by the restaurant, apparently that information was not given to our server as he asked us what we would like for dessert. There was no acknowledgement or mention of our birthdays. We both stated that we'd have the crème brûlée. Shortly after, he delivered just ONE dessert to us to share???!!! A bit odd it thought but we rolled with it. Perhaps it was a good thing that there was just one dessert as it was definitely over cooked. The sugar on top was completely burnt black which also ultimately overcooked the dessert. It was disappointing that we didn't get to celebrate as we had hoped. I have been in the food service industry and I realize that these things happen. There was a miscommunication obviously. The Christmas carolers did song "Happy Birthday" to us though. read more

Just want to remind everyone that they do not do Christmas dinners well. We took a group of 9 last year for our special holiday experience. They sat us on the back patio and forgot about us for over an hour. They offered bread twice. Never took our order- we're so disorganized and out right rude. We ended up having Taco Bell.
