My wife and I came here recently for the first time to celebrate our second wedding anniversary and couldn't have had a better experience. Shari was WONDERFUL and gave us great menu and drink recommendations and made us feel so special during our visit. The food was equally amazing (we started with the yummy Caesar salads, my wife ordered the salmon and I had the crown cut prime rib. We also had the creamed spinach, creamed corn and mashed potatoes. We ended the our meal with the bread pudding and an extra surprise English trifle, courtesy of Shari. We loved everything!). My wife's favorite cocktail is an old fashioned and she said theirs was one of the best she's ever had. The atmosphere was so cozy and beautiful, especially during this holiday season. They even had very talented Christmas carolers who came by our table to sing my wife's favorite, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Holy cow. First of all, walking in made me feel like I was transported to a far away land in Europe by the cozy ambiance and inn-like interior...not to mention the cute little phone booth outside. Can someone say "photo opp??!" However, little does it feel like you are actually sitting off the PCH in little ol Corona Del Mar! They are definitely known for their prime rib, so prime rib I got! They have 4 different sizes.. a small size, medium size, and LARGE size! Also a second medium size that comes with a few slices. I got the medium and WOW! It was HUGE! Some people at my table got the large..and my eyes were wide with wonder. That could be a 2 hungry person with large appetites shared plate. Even the medium was 2 person shareable! I love that it comes with Yorkshire pudding (which is like a fluffy bread), and your choice of two sides- creamed corn, creamed spinach, and mashed potatoes. WHATEVER you do..GET THE CREAMED CORN! We enjoyed a beautiful evening here tonight, mother-daughter dinner style. Our waitstaff was friendly, attentive, quick and at the ready, so much so that they barely let us refresh our own water! Ambiance was nice and cozy, like you have transported through time to an old English pub, enjoying dinner and drinks with friends in a "living room by the fireplace " atmosphere. My visit to Five Crowns was a unique experience. That I will remember. The inside of the restaurant is modeled after an old English castle. The service was excellent too. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful and answered all of our questions about the menu. I ordered the salmon. I ordered the salmon medium so it was juicy on the inside. It was absolutely delicious. The butternut squash was tasty and went well with the salmon. I liked how the skin was crispy. The house salad was also good. Wife and I decided to try this place for our 8 year wedding anniversary last night and was very disappointed. First, my wife ordered a glass of wine and when our server brought it out and poured it into her glass, she missed the glass and spilled it directly into the table while looking my wife directly in the eyes. Finally made it to Five Crowns and I totally regret all the times I could have eaten here... but now I KNOW. MUST ORDER: California Cut Prime Rib w/ Yorkshire Pudding, Mashed Potatoes and Creamed Corn. I ordered my prime rib RARE and it come out at the perfect temperature and tasted amazing. The mashed potatoes and creamed corn were good accouterments to the prime rib but I would totally pass on the Yorkshire Pudding if it wasn't automatically included. According to the menu, the California Cut is supposedly for lighter appetites (6oz) but my portion was much larger than that! I got to pack up half of the prime rib for a super delicious lunch the next day. I had the drinks, bead basket, an appetizer and dessert here as well but all of it was out shined by the prime rib meal. I went with my friend for oc restaurant week yesterday and I will definitely be coming back. I am comparing this to Fullerton's summit house, which is the place I usually go to for prime rib in Orange County and I hands down like this place better. It tastes exactly like lawrys in Beverly Hills, kind of obvious since they are the same owner. They even have the lawrys seasoning salt and seasoning pepper as accompaniments. I love how they put the au jus sauce in a little pitcher so I can pour as much as I want on my meat. They only offered the creamy horseradish, I wonder if they have the regular horseradish. My Mom was a true Brit and loved going to dinner at Five Crowns. When she was alive, we ate there frequently. Mom passed away a few years ago and until tonight we had not been back. As this was my husband's 81st birthday, we thought an evening at Five Crowns would be wonderful. We could not have been more wrong. We arrived on time for our 7PM reservation and were seated at 7:15PM. About 20 minutes later a waitress finally came over and said that she was super busy and would we like some water? That was all we were offered after 20 minutes - water. It was at least 15 minutes more before she took our order. Her excuse was that she was the only waitress in the entire room serving people. We had been there almost an hour before our salads arrived. No bread was offered and when we finally asked for it, it took several minutes to arrive. My steak was lukewarm and kind of greasy. The mushrooms were somewhat inedible and served in a bowl without a spoon to dish them out. When the waitress finally came over halfway through our main course she asked " Is everything wonderful?". We replied "No". She did not offer to do anything or even to respond to our comment, but asked if we were going to order a soufflé for dessert because if we were, we had to let her know now. All in all, it was well over two hours to eat a very mediocre meal with a waitress that was basically non existent and obviously did not care about whether or not we were enjoying our meal. When you consider that the tab was over $200.00, we really felt like we could have gone to Denny's and gotten better service. We have never done this before, but I was so annoyed that on the way out I asked to speak with the manager, Dino. When we told him about our experience, he acted appalled and told us that if we came back to please mention his name and he would make it up to us. If he had been on the floor at anytime during our meal we would have spoken to him before leaving, but there were no managers to be seen at anytime during our meal. Suffice it to say, my Mother would roll over in her grave at the experience we had tonight at one of her favorite restaurants. Pros - Staff is super friendly - awesome ambiance - Food was amazing - Caesar salad is nicely tossed and nice to have before a heavy steak - Had the Henry VIII Prime which is huge and was perfectly done. - Also tried some 45 day aged Prime ribs and it's was amazing. It is definitely worth it too bad it's only limited time item. - As for the sides they were great. I tried the spinach and corn but I think next time I will go with the corn and mashed potatoes. - Desert was amazing if you like dark chocolate the chocolate soufflé is amazing. My son had the English trifle and cleaned his plate but it's a little too sweet for me. Cons - Lobster bisque was a little on the heavy side and really had no lobster chunks. My husband and I love coming here occasionally. This past Sunday, we came specifically for the Akaushi beef prime rib that they advertised for. The waiter even encouraged us to get it, and we were very excited since we came for the special menu. Soon after, the waiter came back saying they were out, which was hard to understand because the special menu was supposed to go on till Monday and we were at the restaurant at 6 pm on a Sunday, so it's not like it was even close to closing time. It's events like this that really disappoint you as customers. Based on the comments and reviews, we had high expectations for our experience. The restaurant called to confirm the reservation AND that we were celebrating TWO birthdays. The restaurant was beautifully decorated for the holiday season. We were seated at our table on time. Our waiter brought out bread and water. I was surprised to see that my bread plate was dirty. It was quickly replaced. My friend told the waiter that her napkin felt damp. It's possible that he didn't hear her but she had to ask twice for a new napkin. In spite of these snafus we were determined to have a good experience. If I was rating on food alone, it would be 5 stars. The lobster bisque and prime rib was superb; however, we were quite disappointed that in spite of our birthdays being confirmed by the restaurant, apparently that information was not given to our server as he asked us what we would like for dessert. There was no acknowledgement or mention of our birthdays. We both stated that we'd have the crème brûlée. Shortly after, he delivered just ONE dessert to us to share???!!! A bit odd it thought but we rolled with it. Perhaps it was a good thing that there was just one dessert as it was definitely over cooked. The sugar on top was completely burnt black which also ultimately overcooked the dessert. It was disappointing that we didn't get to celebrate as we had hoped. We both had the California cut prime rib dinner, and it brought back memories of coming here since I was a child. We both ordered the prime rib medium rare, and it was to die for.
