I have been going to 5 crowns since early 1982 and yes they have gone thru too much changes and at least for me not for the better. I went there about week ago and between 6 of us spent 700 without liquor. I still miss the days when they used to have only ladies serving with proper attire. Beside I still miss Tommy and even the food is not quite the way used to be. I know they must change with time but..... yes I still miss Ambrosia what can I say. I think they should have little more selection for beef. They were out of ribeyes and new York strips just don't cut it for me. Others said they were good but maybe it was just me. read more

Came here to celebrate a birthday and the food was great, for the most part. We had the jumbo shrimp cocktail and crab cakes for an appetizer and the lamb chops, filet mignon and crown cut with roasted mushrooms as entrees. The crown cut was mostly fat which was a tad bit disappointing. The server asked if we wanted a hot fudge, I thought this was for the birthday celebration but we were charged for it, oh well. Prior to taking off, the server dropped off Prosecco and mentioned that it was to celebrate the birthday. While this was a kind gesture, it was unfortunate because we mentioned no alcohol when he took our drink orders in the beginning since one person (birthday boy) at the table doesn't drink alcohol. We even asked if they have non-alcoholic beer when he took our drink order. The speakeasy they share the building with did make us some great mocktails and had a nice ambiance. Let me start by saying Five Crowns lost a couple stars strictly due to the manager here and managing a situation incorrectly. I called ahead to inquire about their corkage fee. Jake told me that it is $15; however, when I got the bill, it turned out to be $25. Our server Amy, who is the sweetest girl ever said that Jake is wrong but will bring it up to the manager. Instead of taking off $10, the manager said sorry for the error, and still charged us $25. I expect much better customer service from a manager at a $$$ establishment like Five Crowns. You simply do not let a customer accept an error made by an employee. What is $10 to a restaurant. Prime Rib Chili Cheese Fries (ordered from Side Door, 3/5): Fries were nice and crisp and they added just the right amount of chili so that the fries weren't soggy. The chili was on the lighter side in terms of flavor. Nothing unique, but fulfills your chili cheese fries cravings. Crab Cake (2/5): Slightly over fried where you could actually taste the oil in the crab cake. You do get a good amount of crab vs. filling; however, it was a still little dense. Also the flavor was mild, it definitely needed more seasoning or some sort of aioli sauce. I tasted fennel seeds more than anything else. For $20, you only get one crab cake and it's not that thick. Definitely not worth the price. Henry VIII Prime Rib (4/5): Since we were going to share the prime rib, we opted for the largest portion. Was told it's about 17oz with the bone. The dish comes with Yorkshire pudding and two sides. We opted for cream corn and cream spinach. The prime rib itself could use more salt rub while it baked as our piece was light in flavor. I had to sprinkle some Lawy's seasoning salt myself. After you drizzled some au jus and whipped cream horseradish, it was quite tasty. We requested med rare and the prime rib was soft, juicy, and tender. Was not a fan of the cream spinach as it was too "green" in flavor. Needed some garlic to balance the flavors or some other seasoning. Pork Chop (5/5): Seasoned perfectly for my taste buds. Grilled medium and was tender and juicy. The pears added nice sweetness and I enjoyed the pickled purple cabbage that came with the dish. Forgot what was the puree was on the bottom, but it was delicious. Service (5/5): Amy our server was so sweet, kind, and incredibly polite. She was so attentive and would always check up on us. Maybe too often actually. She felt bad about how the manager handled the corkage situation, but it was out of her control. I could tell that she was disappointed too. Promote Amy to manager, she knows how to treat customers the right way. read more

My wife and I made a reservation at 5 Crowns for 6 PM last Thursday and arrived 5 minuets early. The restaurant was not busy at all. We were taken to our table and given menus. We waited 25 minuets for someone to come by and never did, finally my wife approached the hostess and asked if a waitress was assigned to our section. After another 5 minuets, we had a waitress come by and apologize, after that she took our drink order and things went smooth. She offered us a dessert at no charge which was kind of her. To wrap this up, the food was decent, but I have had much better at a much at more reasonable price. We will probably not return. read more

I really wanted to give this place another five stars as I did last month because we had such a fabulous time with the carolers and delicious food. Last night did not measure up. My friend and I came strictly for the surf and turf special. I was looking forward to this meal all month. Did not eat all day. Even the tea lacked flavor ! I ordered peppermint! I'm guessing he gave me chamomile. Wasn't worth taking back. As for the special, the lobster tail was dry and overcooked. The melted butter was more like melted oil. Not sure why because the butter with rolls was delicious! The prime rib was so thin I could barely taste it. There's a certain thickness that you need for prime rib and on one end it was barely 1/8 inch. We ordered the chocolate soufflé for dessert and that was a big letdown. Very dry, no flavor. Waiter was inattentive, just doing his job. We were celebrating our birthdays! No candle on the soufflé! Not even a happy birthday! Ambience was great as usual. This review is with a heavy heart as I have been going to 5 crowns for 40 years for birthdays and special occasions. We had a wedding there a few years ago. My English cut was 50% globs of fat and not medium rare, as ordered. I sent it back and quickly something came back with similar globs of fat. Another larger prime rib dinner was over cooked at our table. Our waiter was very good. But quality of Prime Rib was really sub-par. Again, 5 Crowns has always been a favorite special place to eat. Replicating an old English country inn, this is a quaint and cozy place to enjoy some wonderful cuts of beef. Owned by the Lawry's group, Five Crowns is a premiere destination in Orange County for anyone looking to experience award winning prime rib. The menu is heavily meat influenced, but there are some seafood options available. The prime rib comes in 4 different cuts, depending on how voracious your appetite is. It's served with au jus, Yorkshire Pudding, whipped cream horseradish, and your choice of 2 sides (creamed corn, creamed spinach, or mashed potatoes). There are 6 types of steaks available, and they're sourced from either Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado or the Miyazaki Prefecture (Japanese A5 wagyu, 6 oz). The Kansas selection is their prime New York Strip (16 oz), Colorado is the American wagyu top sirloin (8 oz), and the Nebraska offerings are the deckle, bone-in ribeye (24 oz) and filet mignon (8 oz). I recommend starting off with a salad, and the wedge is a great choice. It comes with baby iceberg lettuce, blue cheese crumbles, bacon, and cherry tomato. The bacon is abundant and extra crispy. There's also a lot of blue cheese, and while the flavor is great, it's naturally very pungent and overpowering once you run out of lettuce to eat it with. The salad is crisp, fresh, vibrant, and when paired with the bacon and blue cheese, rich and decadent. The prime rib is their signature item, so it was a must order. We went with their classic crown cut, which is their standard serving size. For the sides, we chose the creamed corn and creamed spinach. The meat is prepared medium rare, has great flavor, is very juicy and tender. It's served on the bone, which I believe helps impart even more flavor to the meat. Compared to Fleming's and the Summit House, the prime rib here bests Fleming's and is level with Summit House's offering. The sides were executed well and had a good amount of creaminess to them. We also got the bone-in ribeye. It's served à la carte, so you're just gonna get a metal plate with a giant slab of meat on it. There's a quenelle of carmelized onions placed on top, but I wasn't a fan and felt it didn't pair well with the meat nor did it enhance the flavor. The steak is easily 1" thick with a healthy amount of marbling on the edge in the form of a fat cap. The meat is seared on the outside to create a crispy and smoky crust, while the inside is cooked to a perfect medium rare. With so much meat and how thick the cut is, your mouth will definitely get a workout. While the steak was tender and juicy, it won't melt in your mouth and the flavor is a bit bland. It needs to undergo an aging process or be seasoned better. To pair with the steak, we got the Stilcheddar mac 'n cheese and truffle french fries. The mac 'n cheese was cheesy, creamy, and smoky. The cheese blend used is absolutely phenomenal. The macaroni is curly and does a great job absorbing the cheese. There's a nice golden brown crust on top as well. I was very enamored and impressed by the french fries. The potatoes used were fantastic and whatever oil they were cooked in gave it exceptional flavor. The fries had the perfect level of crunchiness and the truffle oil and shaved cheese on top elevated them to another level. I wish I could've gotten a much larger portion of the fries. For dessert, you have to get the dark chocolate soufflé. It takes 25-30 minutes to prepare, so inform your server early in your meal to ensure it'll be ready at the appropriate time. the soufflé is made with 68% dark chocolate and comes with a healthy amount of Devonshire cream on the side for you to mix in. The soufflé has a nice level of rise to it, and inside is hot and soft melted chocolate cake. The service is on par with what's expected from a steakhouse. It's attentive, informative, and professional. Plates and silverware are removed and replaced as needed. However, unlike other establishments, crumbs aren't removed from the table in between dishes. Parking is valet only, but street parking is available for those of us willing to walk a short distance before and after a large meal. read more

Just want to start off saying that I am thankful for this restaurant being available for dining in in the patio and for their amazing service. The only reason for the 3 star is that the prime rib is not anything to write home about. In fact, it was the most disappointing thing about our whole experience. My husband and I came here to celebrate my birthday and we ordered the crab cake, Henry VIII prime rib, lobster, side of mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, and mushrooms. The creamed spinach and mushrooms were the best part of the meal; the mushrooms were more flavorful and satisfying than the prime rib itself. The crab cakes were pretty good, and on the fishy side. The lobster was tasty, but small. The mashed potatoes were average. And the prime rib was a true disappointment. We ordered it medium, but it came out more medium rare...maybe because it was bone in? It was chewy and not very well seasoned. We thought it was crazy that the sides were better than the entree, but who goes to a restaurant for their sides? The service was very good. We never had to ask for anything. We know times are tough, so I hate to be writing this. They did an amazing job for the most part. They gave us a strawberry shortcake on the house for my birthday. Ordered the bone marrow (with melted sweet onions, mostarda and toast) for an appetizer, and OH the flavor of that, melts in your mouth, absolutely mouthwatering! And for the main event, haha all of us (group of 5) ordered the Crown Cut Prime Rib, cause you have to, it's their standard since 1965! served with au jus, yorkshire pudding (fantastic!), whipped cream horseradish, and creamed corn, creamed spinach or mashed potatoes. Overall it was a good experience. Took my mom for her birthday and it was good... but, I remembered it being great in the past. The service was good. The atmosphere was good. I didn't realize it was OC Restaurant Week so we did the prefix menu. The flat bread with squash and chorizo was really good and really flavorful. I was impressed. The prime rib.... ehhh... it was very generic. Like I feel as though I've had better at Outback. I mean I ate it all, but it was underwhelming. Then they brought my mom a free birthday "trifle". Nice guest it's..... but, like, embarrassingly cheap. I think it's just become more like a fast casual experience than how I remembered it being a little more upscale in the past. Four stars because the staff was wonderful.. Great customer service hands down... Our waitress Logan and Juan were great! The outside sitting was super nice.. As for the food ... it was okay. Not the best prime rib and for the price it should be a great piece of meat (ordered the Henry rid eye 23oz ($60). My husband ordered the Lamb chops ($55) that was yummy.. the salad was also tasty. The squash and corn was not tasty... First-time here and would probably go back to the pub side.. but to spend almost $200 (2 cocktails also were ordered) for dinner would definitely consider going there once a year. read more

I had been dreaming of coming here for years now because the cute telephone booth always appealed to me whenever I drive down PCH, but because of the pandemic we were not able to come. Boyfriend and I finally felt comfortable enough to visit, and we decided our 3-year anniversary would be a great opportunity. Please come and either order the Prime Rib or Jidori Chicken! They are mentioned here in the reviews very often for a reason! Service is also amazing, and our attendant made sure we felt special the whole time. Such a sweet woman, and I overheard her tell the couple next to us that she is new. I never would have guessed because she naturally looked comfortable at the restaurant and she was incredibly welcoming. There was an older crowd at the restaurant last night, but my boyfriend and I loved the ambiance as well as all the British decor so much. I appreciated that it was not rowdy. Some people have said that this restaurant has changed a little bit over the years but I disagree when it comes to the dining room and the food. The Swinging Door side was a great addition for a more casual crowd looking for a good drink but the dining room is one of the few places in Newport or the Flower Streets where you can enjoy a fairly formal dinner without all the noise. The staff is awesome at this restaurant and I would say the service level is better that most of the local restaurants, especially some of the newer, more trendy locations. I The food is great at the Five Crowns and I would even recommend branching out from the traditional Prime Rib dinner. Ever since the Ritz left their location in Fashion Island, this restaurant has become the best place to get an upscale dinner without some of the usual Newport Coast or 'recently relocated from LA' crowd turning it into a scene. Had a really nice night at 5 Crowns last Thursday the 29th of December, 2022. My wife and I were celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and wanted to try 5 Crowns. We made reservations for 6pm and arrived about 10 minutes early but were seated within 3 minutes max. They have a valet parking lot across the street from the restaurant and the guys running it were great. Very nice and very professional. Our waitress was Shelly and she was assisted by Juan. Shelly was awesome. She really new her stuff and we enjoyed her very much. Juan was always on hand to offer more in the way of drinks or bread. We both ordered the prime rib and it was great. We actually decided not to get wine but ordered a dark beer instead and we were very pleased with it. Just felt more natural since the atmosphere is British. All in all the night was fantastic. People, food and oh yes the Carolers. They were fantastic. Great job 5 Crowns and thank you Shelly and Juan. It was a fantastic night. After dining at Lawry's in Beverly Hills, Las Vegas and Chicago, we decided to give Five Crowns a try on Valentine's Day. The atmosphere is quite different than Lawry's, an intimate English syle inn. We were greeted and seated promptly at our reservation time. Unfortunately , we were not acknowledged by our server until 30 minute later and our drink order was not delivered until 15 minutes later. The party next to us had the same issue.We dined early and at this time they did not seem that busy. We both selected from their Valentines menu. My wife ordered the prime rib and I ordered the Filet. The wedge salad was delicious, the prime rib was good, not great, but we expected the level of Lawry's. My filet was delicious. W encountered a problem because when ordering the waiter asked both of us what sides we wanted. When my filet was delivered, my plate had only the filet. When I asked the waiter, he said he would find out where the sides were. When he returned, he apologized because that he did not know the sides were not included with the filet. Additionally he did not deliver the glass of wine I had ordered and when we were finished with our meal, I asked him to ensure the wine was not on our bill since I did not get it. He brought the wine when our desert was served. We will not dine here again. It appears it is a local clientele. There are better Orange County choice for prime rib; Summit House in Fullerton comes to mind, Captain Jacks in Huntington. Lawry's in Beverly Hills is a excellent choice except for the drive. read more

The Five Crowns is part of the "Lawry's" Family. We usually start with a bottle of wine and when it's time for dinner, I often get the "English Cut" (three thin slices) which is served with au jus, Yorkshire Pudding, whipped cream horseradish, and your choice of Lawry's Creamed Corn, Creamed Spinach, or mashed potatoes. I always get the corn and the mashed. For dessert, I will often get the C.C. Brown's Hot Fudge Sundae (Straus organic vanilla bean ice cream,toasted almonds, whipped cream). Our Christmas Eve dinner at Five Crowns restaurant in Corona del Mar should have been a five-star experience. The food was excellent, the service by Ronnie and other wait staff was impeccable, the carolers who serenaded us table side were delightful. But all of their hard work and effort to make the evening one to treasure was ruined by the miserable, totally inadequate, jury-rigged heating setup. We weren't even supposed to be outside there on the plastic-tented patio. We set up our reservation for indoor seating and when we confirmed it with Angelina were told we were pre-seated at Table 21 inside. But Angelina messed up our reservation, canceling it by accident at one point, and then maybe because we questioned it we ended up at the worst table in the restaurant, as far outside as possible, and directly above the blowtorch of a heating vent. Yes, that's right, the only heating in the huge plastic tent outside vents directly under a table, blistering our feet and those of others on surrounding tables. So a large part of the patio is freezing, with diners complaining that it needed to be turned up, and then all around us people kept rushing over and cutting it off before their shoes caught fire. What a miserable, cheap, inadequate heating arrangement. Shame on Five Crowns for forcing their staff to have to deal with freezing or frying diners because of this stupid arrangement. Five Crowns owes it to their staff and their customers to fix this ridiculous circumstance. read more
