In town and looking for the best restaurant on Balboa Island and Yelpers steered me here with that most amazing pic of the ceviche!!! And it came out looking EXACTLY as I'd hoped: so beautiful and fresh and delicious- and the service is so charming as well! I had a break in my workweek so I hopped a ride to the Island to explore- walked down Marine and then headed here for solo lunch- I'm so glad I did! When you only have a 3 hour window on your work trip, you want to make it count ;) The ceviche and spicy margarita were fantastic (see pic) - I sat outside and then walked down the block to the ferry (for $4 you can ride across the inlet to the pier and back in just a few minutes) Todos Santos really made my week! read more

Le sigh (sorry, my elder emo coming out). Todos Sandos was a 3 star/"OK" stop on a recent trip to SoCal. Located just down the street from the Balboa Ferry, it's an easy walk. Nice looking spot with plenty of outdoor seating. All the staff we interacted with were very friendly. So why just 3 stars? The food was just eh. If I had more hours in California I would have made up for the lackluster food by making a trip to HB's Tacos Los Cholos. I had the recommended Enchiladas Suizas. When my plate came out I knew immediately it would be just ok. The enchiladas didn't even look saucy. The refried beans looked (and tasted) like canned beans. The rice was very boring. The tinga chicken, somehow, was dry. My wife had the tostada salad. It was like $26 because of the $10 add on of steak. $26 for the most gringo thing on the menu. Best part of it was the steak, the rest will be repressed from my memory. A friend had the taco trio. $19 for 3 tacos and no sides. That's pretty steep. He didn't even finish the 3 tacos. He had the short rib, al pastor and carnitas. None of them looked very good. I had a pinch of his short rib meat. It tasted like grandma's Sunday pot roast. And just like the tinga chicken it was also dry. My wife's strawberry marg was quite good. The beer menu was very basic. Gotta step it up. When the free chips and salsa, and add on steak are the highlights of the dinner you know that the place needs help. read more

I love this place for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just drinks. The food is delicious, the service is fast and friendly and I love the way the doors open completely so inside blends with outside and the whole place feels like one big beautiful patio. And the margaritas are fantastic! read more

Cute place, seated quickly, ton of flies. They have fans for the flies but they do dive bomb you here. Food was good quality and not sloppy or greasy which is most Mexican places. Reasonable prices for their dishes and drinks. Al pastor was dry, halibut tacos good. read more

I came in Wednesday at 1pm for lunch and I requested a quiet area because i had a work call to attend on my laptop. I got the Wi-Fi which worked well. Very large space and it was quiet in my area until two couples came with their 5 little boys, luckily i was leaving by then. Theres a coffee/pastry as soon as you get in. The restaurant is the rest of the place. I sat inside at a long table by myself. I Ordered the halibut fish tacos which was filling and delicious. The rice was bland but luckily the beans made it better. You also get chips and salsa when you sit down. That was delicious and i finished the whole bowl of chips by myself. My dish was $24 which is pricey but with the chips, i was pretty full at the end, and i came pretty hungry. Server was good. She went missing towards the end when i wanted to pay but left me a lone bc she saw i was working on my laptop so i dont blame her. read more

This little cozy restaurant is off the beaten path it's mostly tucked away amongst the homes. We like Mexican food and when we were looking at the other restaurants on the main road,, we weren't captivated by anything - we parked on the main street by the fire dept and walked a few blocks down -got a little exercise and glad we did. Worth the walk. Felt very much for Neighborhood community. We sat at the bar, ordered the taco plate and ranch waters. The tacos and the beans were delicious. Absolutamente Delicioso!!! I rarely give 5 stars, but this little gem most certainly deserves them all. The food is exquisite and a nice change from the usual Mexican fare. It's influenced by the San Cabos area of Mexico. So, it's what we're familiar with, only with a lovely twist. I ordered the chicken enchiladas Suiza, and my son got the taco trio. It was some of the BEST Mexican food we'd ever had. Another plus is that it's not on Balboa Island's main drag. So, parking and traffic aren't as much of a hassle. It's also very close to the water. The atmosphere is pleasant, and so is the staff. We couldn't have had a nicer experience. I highly recommend it. read more

Finally a place that does taquitos the right way! We were recommended this joint by the bellman at our hotel and it did not disappoint. It's tucked away in the neighborhood of balboa on the same street where the ferry is located. Albeit , it was warm inside the restaurant so we opted outside where it felt cooler. I had been searching for delicious taquitos so I ordered the chicken. Presentation and flavor were all there! The salsa it came with wasn't my personal favorite so I traded my partner for the salsa verde- WOWZA! That salsa slapped, acidic and perfect level of spiciness. This place is great! We are staying in Newport Beach by the pier and the restaurant scene is slim pickens. So happy to have found this gem just a short ferry ride away. We started with tasty house Margaritas and chips with very flavorful salsa. This was followed by the Tacos Trio entree (carne asada, short ribs, and shrimp) and they were excellent. The corn tortillas were tasty (I usually find the corn choice boring) and the fillings generous without being overwhelming. Hubby had the Chicken Suiza enchiladas. He said they rivaled any that he has had in Baja Mexico which is saying a LOT. Nico, our server, was super attentive and gracious. Wow, he was working hard, too. They were busy, busy! This place is delicious and is one of our family favorites. My sister had her wedding reception here, and ever since then it has been a place we always love going back to. Todos Santos is an absolute gem. I grew up just down the street, and for years this location was the old Park Avenue Café -- a place I always felt sentimental about after it closed. I honestly never thought I'd walk into a new business there and feel happy about it... but Toto's Santos completely changed that and I'm genuinely glad they're there. The food was phenomenal. Fresh, flavorful, and the portions were huge. The prices were completely reasonable, which is especially impressive given that this is Balboa Island -- an upper-class area where you often expect inflated pricing.(A truly giant homemade vegetarian burrito with fantastic homemade guacamole and pico de gallo along with a crispy chips and salsa all for $18 plus tip). What also really stood out was the atmosphere. It's classy without being pretentious. You could dress up for dinner, wear clean jeans and a T-shirt, or even come in with sandy feet after the beach. I was in a dress (and a huge backpack), but there were families with young children, someone had a dog tucked under their table, and everyone seemed equally welcome. That balance is rare. The woman running the restaurant was extra incredible -- warm, kind, and genuinely attentive. I was backpacking through and had a long night of public transit ahead of me, and they kindly charged my nearly-dead phone while I ate. She asked which cord my cell used and she set me up with an existing cord that they had been using to charge something else without me even asking for that. They even encouraged me to relax and enjoy my meal as long as I wanted, despite the restaurant filling up. The complimentary chips and salsa were light and crispy and clearly authentic. There is truly nothing I would have changed. Fantastic food, fantastic service, and an atmosphere that manages to be both elevated and welcoming at the same time. I don't leave reviews like this very often for restaurants. Toto's Santos is a gift to Balboa Island. ‿ I would have taken a picture of the food, but remember my phone was charging. Dinner here on a very busy Friday night left me with a few impressions: * Don't believe the "35 minute" wait. The place was full but a table opened up in under 5 minutes. Success! * A complimentary basket of fresh tortilla chips and a generous bowl of very good red salsa will not just make me happy but it'll also lessen the pain of food that takes a while coming out of the kitchen. * Being off the main drag I expected more locals-less tourists but people know where to find good food. The house seemed to be a mix of both. A Tostada Salad ($16+$10 for addition of steak) tasted great. The server had asked how I liked my steak cooked and because I like charred bits on my carne asada I let that be known. It arrived quite perfectly cooked. A Tacos Trio ($19) received equally enthusiastic thumbs-up. All around, I liked Todos Santos quite a lot. They have a daily happy hour (ending at 5:30) which I'll probably never get to but a Taco Tuesday with good deals stretching until 9:30 pm looks enticing enough to lure me back. read more

The restaurant is located in a corner next to beautiful small houses in a quiet street down Balboa. From the outside looks very promising, it even has an outside patio, with a lovely bar in the back. The hostess was very friendly, in the other hand our waiter seemed to be in a rush at all times. The food was 3/5 chips and salsa were really good. The queso fundido was a complete failure it seems more like cheese soup more than anything. My chicken flautas were delicious and so it was the tacos. Best coffee in Newport Beach! Excellent dark roast coffee and espresso, Todos has even surpassed Blue Bottle Coffee! The cappuccinos are even better than Kean's. People don't even realize it since it's branded as a Mexican restaurant. Kevin, Matt, Sandra, and the entire crew that work in the morning have cultivated a great coffee and breakfast culture for locals and visitors on the island. Its creator, Dan Miller, created this as a landmark and treasure for Island locals. Unlike other restaurants who cater to the tourist mainly during the "on season" this restaurant was created as a community hangout where you get to know permanent staffing, get to enjoy your favorite Mexican delights, and enjoy sitting in the middle of the hub for the ferry and Park Avenue - everyone on the Island eventually passes by this corner. In 1965, I lived above this location in an apartment with my parents. Todos Santos didn't exist in those days - only Wilma's and the Village Inn. This location always needed an enchanted restaurant where very upscale menu items could be found without leaving the Island. And thanks to the excellent hiring and training of staff, you can experience excellent service - something the Island locals have always yearned for. This restaurant is worth a try. I don't usually leave bad reviews or complain about food/service but this is one exception where I feel I should've said something and requested a refund for quite honestly a terrible meal. I came here about a year ago and the food was good, our server was very kind and attentive to us so we decided to give it another go when we came back to Balboa Island. I do understand they were busier than usual due to the Christmas festivities, but I came during the same time last year and experienced a completely different dinner. Understandably, our server was occupied with many tables and wasn't able to get to us right away- totally fine. Once he did get to us however, no introduction, no greeting, just "do you guys know what you want?". As soon as we gave him our order he rushed off and attended to his other tables- also totally fine and understandable. I ordered the queso fundido and the todos chile verde(same thing I ordered last time and it was excellent). The queso was unfortunately very underwhelming- not salted and seasoned nearly enough, a tiny scoop of chorizo, and was barely even hot. Disappointing, but in my opinion still not worth complaining. Then, I got my todos chile verde. I can pretty confidently say this was the worst chile verde I've had in my life- absolutely drowned in sauce, unevenly cooked, sloppily plated, and the cherry on top- when I cut into it, I noticed a large piece of black gunk on the bottom of my plate. After pulling it out I realized it was a giant piece of the tar/grease stuck to the bottom of a pan- once I realized that's what I had been eating the whole time and how disgusting it was I almost threw up right then and there. Like I've said, I completely understand the struggles of holidays in the service industry, and I'm sure our experience wasn't the usual at todos santos. I do wish I had requested a refund right then and there but I was so sick and disappointed with the meal that I just wanted to get out as soon as possible. read more

I will be honest with the review here. Service was extremely slow. I do understand understaffing and such but this was just a bit much. We waited so long just for water and drinks alone. The food was nice but expensive but that's to be expected in Newport Beach area. I got the tostada salad and it was a good portion and the grilled chicken on top was cooked well and not dry.
