This is a classic iconic restaurant that is a replica of one of England's oldest country inns and opened in 1965. The service is warm and attentive with a relaxed ambience. They are famous for their prime rib but all of their food is solid and consistent. They offer excellent cocktails and an impressive wine selection. Tommy has been working at the restaurant for over 40 years and always is smiling and making sure the guests are having an excellent dining experience. I remember coming here as a kid with my grandparents who loved the Five Crowns. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a special occasion and delicious food and exceptional service. read more

So thank you, Five Crowns, for going above and beyond to help us celebrate our special occasion. Indeed, Five Crowns exudes a level of class and refinement that you'd expect from a high-end restaurant situated in a ridiculously affluent neighborhood of Newport Beach. Everything about this restaurant from the ambiance, the decor, and the menu was predicated on sophistication. Here is what we tried. -House rye roll: It's their complimentary bread. I enjoyed the complex blend of flavors from the fennel, orange rind, licorice, molasses, and rye. They serve it with a mini ramekin of whipped sweet cream butter. All orders are served with served with au jus, yorkshire pudding, whipped cream horseradish, and your choice of Lawry's creamed corn, creamed spinach, or mashed potatoes. We opted for the creamed spinach and it was smooth and tasty. We both appreciated how the cream wasn't sweet as that paired well with the sweet soufflé. -Cake with berries: Five Crowns was nice enough to provide us with a free slice of cake for our special occasion! The cake was pretty standard. A solid cake for sure but more of a kind and classy gesture. They provided us with a complimentary flute of champagne as soon as we were seated. They allowed us to change tables to a table with superior lighting (I love taking photos...). The slice of cake was to kind. Our server (Paula B. I believe) was so nice and checked up on us often. Furthermore, she was able to describe the menu items, list ingredients and why they were used, and provide menu recommendations. Can't really think of any downsides. The closest parking is in a lot and they charge. It's probably best to park in the neighborhood. Also, for those who have trouble seeing at night, you may not want to dine at Five Crowns for dinner as it can get rather dim. I had an amazing time last year, but this year it didn't hit well. Service was very sub par. I was deciding five crowns or a place in Costa Mesa and I kind of wished I picked the other place. Food was mediocre at best. Definitely not worth the $200 I spent for my moms birthday. I will sadly not be coming here although I wish It was a good experience . Within walking distance of the beach this is probably one of the oldest steakhouses in this area. Old-fashioned dark antique interior. Very upscale in the world of the old cushy steakhouses where people like the Hearsts used to do business in days of old. Pretty good Yorkshire pudding considering I don't usually like it. You know a restaurant is a fail, when the best thing about the meal is the bread. The Five Crowns may have been the most swinging joint around CDM in the 1970's, but in 2019, it's just bad and tired. I made the mistake of taking a family member here to a celebrate a birthday. We normally go to a certain English manor themed prime rib restaurant in Fullerton, but this place was more geographically desirable. I should have just sucked it up and driven farther. We arrived right on time, but our table wasn't ready. We were eventually shown to the worst table in the house- we got a view of the kitchen, servers and guests constantly parading by, and a cold draft from the front door. There was also a fussy baby in a high chair...just what one wants at a "fine dining" establishment. Our server was slow, unhelpful and completely disinterested. He took 20 minutes to approach us, and when he finally did, promptly disappeared again. It took us a half an hour to receive water and our cocktails. I ordered one of the specialty cocktails, and it was terrible- the color of muddy water and probably a similar flavor. Now let's talk about the food, which was the real nail in the coffin. As mentioned, the bread (which I had to ask the bus staff for, because the waiter was so clueless) was warm and delicious. But that's where it ended. I had a seafood appetizer that was fishy...not enough to make you ill, but enough to give you an off-putting flavor. And then came the prime rib. What a disaster. Undercooked, lukewarm, and gristle ladened. The sides were equally horrible. I am pretty sure the potatoes and gravy are instant. They were awful. The creamed spinach had a weird flavor, and it was so mushy, it resembled soup! I opted out of dessert, and of course our waiter forgot the birthday person's dessert. Honestly, my meal here was like food from a cafeteria or a senior living facility. They have NO business charging the prices they do, or touting themselves as fine dining. It was an absolute waste of my money, and if you're in the area and want that rustic Olde English atmosphere, I suggest you try their attached pub- The Sidedoor. Far better food and drinks and fair prices. And if you want quality prime rib with edible sides, I suggest you take that drive to Fullerton instead. read more

The renovation they did a few years ago did them some good... the glass patio and outdoor patio are both surprisingly nice places to enjoy a good meal. The rest of the inside is still old school; the bar half perhaps has the more comfortable, more casual vibe, and while not quite elbow to elbow, is close. I'm not sure if this is a mandatory answer for prime rib places in the area, or if it's just the British theme? Food is pretty solid, at least for parties. The prime rib is very good, although it won't blow your mind. Skip the desserts tho-- too heavy, at least for me. read more

What a great night! I came in with my boyfriend, it was our first time dining there. The ambiance is very cozy, and you can tell the restaurant has a lot of history. Our server, Linda, was amazing. She was so attentive, and really made the night extra special. She's extremely knowledgeable with both food and wine, so I definitely suggest picking her brain. We ordered a charcuterie and cheese (yum!) and oysters to start. Both were delicious! For our main course I had short ribs and the dude had salmon. We also couldn't pass up on the mac and cheese side. Everything was super good. The short ribs were extremely flavorful and fell apart. Love this place! I ordered one of their specials: prime rib and lobster (surf & turf) mashed potatoes and gravy, creamed spinach, and Yorkshire pudding. This social had a choice of scrumptious desserts so I asked for the creme brûlée. I was so amazed at how awesome this food was...cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The prime rib melted in my mouth. Well I'm not a big horseradish fan, I have to admit the horseradish was absolutely outstanding! A great value for the money. I could go on and on about each item for days it was so delicious! The waitress was fun and knowledgeable! The restaurant itself is it aesthetically pleasing to look at with nice ambience. I was so impressed I told my husband I wanted to come back there for my birthday every year, perhaps more often. I just can't say enough about My overall birthday experience! Just went tonight with some of our friends to celebrate a birthday. We had a party of 11 reservation at 5:45 pm and when we got there we were told we made a mistake and that we reserved a table for a party of 10. We had to stay at the party of 10 table and ate pretty much elbow to elbow. We got our appetizers 30 mins after we were seated and then didn't get our food until 8 pm. When the food arrived to our table, half of the meals given to us were room temperature and soon became cold. No one wants to eat a cold medium rare steak, at that point it's basically bloody cow sushi. The side that we ordered never arrived and when we asked about it, we were told the side order was cancelled. The manager didn't offer any compensation other than giving us more food even though we had the cold food sitting in front of us for 10 mins at this point before our waiter even came out to check on us. After the meal was done our waiter then profusely apologized, and explained what happened, not the manager. He also gave us 4 free desserts. I've worked in the service industry before and I know that it doesn't do too much damage as a manger to offer small things. It looks bad on their part that their waiter had to make up for everything. We paid good money for a meal that frankly did not fill me in any way, and for a night I wish I could have back. read more

Hello, My name is Lisa Stone and I was very disappointed with my dining experience at Five Crowns on 12/20/2022. I've emailed lawrysonline@custcon.com already but wanted to leave this review here as to hopefully help other patrons in the future. I've been dining here for several years and was even a caroler for 6 holiday seasons there as well. That's why it's even more upsetting that last night was by far the worst overall dining experience I've had at this location.  I can't help but wonder if our experience suffered because we were one of the last reservations of the evening. Adding in that I currently work in the restaurant industry full time in a number of different positions, I know that being one of the last tables shouldn't affect the experience at all. It should be the same level of service regardless.  I brought my boyfriend (who also works full time in the restaurant industry and has for 11 years) for his first time at Five Crowns. The meal started with the server asking if we were celebrating anything special. To which I replied, "Yes, it's his first time here." Our server then told us their name was Joanne and will be helping us out this evening. Then asked us if we've been here before. My boyfriend and I exchanged a look across the table. We gave her the benefit of the doubt on that but the rest of the meal the timing was off and she wasn't very attentive to the table. The tour guiding for how the prime rib is cooked was incorrect from Joanne as well unfortunately. We were told the kitchen undercooks it. So we ordered both prime ribs medium instead of medium rare. The prime rib was very close to well done resulting in tough dry meat. If we choose to dine here again we will order it differently.  The most glaring thing to me server wise was that the au jus brought to the table was cold; also 8-10 minutes before the entrees even hit. I had to ask a food runner to reheat the au jus.  It took a while for us to get the check and close out since Joanne hadn't checked in on us in a while. During that time while still actively eating/finishing our meal, a busser asked us several times if they could take our plates. That was very off putting and felt like we were being rushed out by the other staff.  Overall, from start to finish, the dining experience itself was just terrible. Not the standards I've had here at all in the past years; including when I dined here earlier this year in March.  I wanted to reach out and hopefully have a dialogue about this.  Thank you very much and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Just moved to Costa Mesa and had an awesome dinner here on Friday night. We had prime rib, Yorkshire pudding, vegetables and dessert. My fiance and I go to Lawry's every year, usually for my birthday, so we're part of their VIP membership and that's how we found Five Crowns. Mix it up a bit but very similar concept. Plus, I saw a beef Wellington on their menu online and, duh, had to go! We came with his parents and it was lovely. We were happy to see that the Prime Rib actually included two sides because at Lawry's, sides are extra. I was super bummed to see that the Wellington wasn't listed on their menu, they must have just changed them but my fiance asked our server if they were still available and.. there were three left! SCORE! Beef Wellington with finglerling potatoes cooked pretty close to medium-rare but it was ridiculously good! Everyone else also enjoyed their food, either prime rib or the salmon. The service was also a 5-star experience. Everyone you encountered was so nice and helpful, I asked someone where the restroom was and she had me follow her and she even opened the door for me. Seriously just top notch. The decor was adorable and so well done, I wish we lived closer so we could hang out in their patio/bar area. read more

Though I love the British pub-house style décor with whitewashed walls split by huge exposed beams, a fireplace all ablaze and wall art typifying English countryside and seascapes, I was not here for the décor. I was here to eat. And based on all the hype this place garners, I expected no less than an outstanding meal. Alas, I was under-whelmed. Though my dinner companion seemed to thoroughly enjoy himself, I did well keeping my thoughts to myself to hold for this review. In a nutshell, everything was just fine. The food, service, presentation, ambiance and everything that adds to a thorough review was there. My issue, my complaint, was that for $150, I expected at least a few borderline moments of ecstasy, something to make my eyes roll back into my head or cause my hips to gyrate in my chair, something to make me go "Goddam, that's good!" The prime rib was delicious but the creamed horseradish made it feel like a Vegas buffet cut. The ribeye was grilled just right but it was too salty (for me). The 4oz lobster looked like a flattened, limp prawn in a red shell. The creamed corn and spinach looked like small plops of offal. The salad, soup, breads, desserts were fine, just fine. So, if you want to pay premium for a fine meal, your expectations will be met. I was expecting something a little more kick ass. P.S., It appears my tolerance of old people must be at a new low these days as while waiting for Jon to arrive, an old dude asked me to give up my seat for his party of elder beach-gentry. I am surprised that this restaurant has only 3.5 stars. I have absolutely loved my time there this week and every other time I have been in to visit. What the hell are you all smoking? Or do most o you take a look at the pricing and think I cant afford this chit so I am giving them 2 stars because of it? Well while I was there service was spot on. We had plenty of visits and walk bys by the waitress, bus boy, and roving staff. Our waters, wine glasses, etc were never allowed to fall below half a glass for example. They knew when to stop by and when to walk on by. That is extremely important for a restaurant of caliber, as I feel this joint is. Pro Tip: Park on the surrounding streets and avoid the $4 surcharge for valet parking across the street. I love the prime rib here. I don't know about the standard cuts though. I always get an end cut. They are always full of seasoning and exceptionally flavorful. I have been eating here for well over 25 yrs on my first visit. Granted I do not enjoy all that they serve (popovers and some of the English style stuff), but I don't order it. Its about the prime rib and cream corn. Yes this is real creamed corn. Different than the cream style corn you buy at the supermarket in a can. They make it fresh and mix real cream in with the corn giving it a special sweet filling quality that I just haven't had elsewhere. Overall though the service, solid taste of the grub, ambience, and intangibles make this a great restaurant to me. I also love that they have a working English pay phone booth out in front. The lions are a bit keechi, but so what. I know half of you folks are hipstahs or bougie so you will enjoy it regardless. Well at least that is my guess if you give it a fair chance. This location is located on PCH in Corona Del Mar. Minutes way from the beach :) The chocolate souffle here was very good!! It was super rich and flavorful/ The creamed corn was very buttery and tasty. The prime rib was juicy and tender. I had been here once years ago and since that time, a lot has changed. The atmosphere has modernized with the change of management and the restaurant has a different feeling to it. The same great prime rib remains, it is tender and very, very good. Most likely, you will not regret ordering the prime rib, it's what Five Crowns is known for, and with good reason. The sides, whether you choose creamed spinach, mashed potatoes, or creamed corn, are great. The horseradish is fantastic. The sourdough bread they bring you in the beginning is excellent. An airy, flaky Yorkshire Pudding (or what is often called a popover) is also served. A sweet young lady waited on us and we had great service from various members of the staff. This one is pretty epic, they went from 1 a star for quite a while for me to a 5 star so.. well that's gotta say something. Came here last night for a small birthday dinner with a small group of 8, reservation was at 7:30 we got there on time and we waited a good 10-15 minutes to get seated, which was acceptable but not great. Once we sat NO SERVICE, NOBODY came to our table for at least 15 minutes, by this time it was a bit past 8 already and i was getting unhappy, i told my group that if nobody comes within 10 minutes we're walking out. but another server walked by and one of my friend flagged her down, my friend who wasn't as annoyed as I was explained our situation to the server and that's where the 1 star started to jump to a 5 she immediately took out her pad and started to take our order, after taking our order she left me with the wine list since i wanted to choose wine, she came back later to take my order and i asked her some questions, i decided to get a bottle and she advised me to try a tasting prior to ordering in case i didn't like it, i definitely appreciated that, i tasted it, liked it, got the bottle. bread came quick, water came quick, and they even gave our table a shrimp appetizer on the house (i'm guessing because of the experience we had) then our meals all came out before i even had a chance to get to the bread, they really got their game together! our sever came later and was VERY nice, i'm giving him the benefit of the doubt that he was probably just busy with something when we sat down. we ended up having a great experience, the food was on par with what i expected and they gave me a lime dessert for my birthday! ALSO, even with a party of 8 they didn't include gratuitiy which is a HUGE + in my book not because i'm cheap but because i just think that's very respectful of them, we ended up tipping 20% so even more than the typical 18%. great great! side note: the table next to us was an older couple who were EXTREMELY RUDE to the servers, literally yelling at them and stuff, i was so tempted to just walk up and slap them, just because you're the customer doesn't mean you can treat the servers with no respect, have some self dignity people! read more

Five Crowns is one of our family's favorite restaurants for birthdays and other special occasions, especially during Christmas- you can't get any more festive; it is decorated to the nines and carolers dressed Dickens-style are wandering around singing your faves. The fact that it was originally modeled after a place in England and built in the 30s as a private house adds to the charm. To the complainers regarding "old people" and especially the guy that said the food was "hospital" and under-seasoned during his office party: 1. Lay off the Tapatio-your taste buds are shot. 2. Be thankful you have a job. Yes, there is an older crowd and maybe just older-looking. Believe it or not, there are moms or grandmas (like mine) that actually have their own boobs, no botox, duck-lips, or ratty blond extensions. In other words, they aren't trying to look like their teenage daughters ala The Housewives. You see long time locals here. If you are looking for a scene or horrified by seeing someone over 50, this is not the place for you. END OF RANT. So, the day after Christmas, we came for dinner and had a great time. Prime rib is the thing to order here, although I am partial to the rack of lamb as well, which is what I ordered. My bro did give me a taste of his end-cut prime rib:) Both were excellent, as usual. If you are a bleu-cheese lover, try the salad with Stilton dressing. They also have a nice shrimp cocktail and good crab cakes for starters. Don't forget to sample the Swedish limpa bread either when they bring the breads-yummy. For dessert, they have traditional English desserts like trifle but I love the decadent CC Brown's hot fudge sundaes. Our server, Miss Barriga was friendly but professional- as most of them are. Some of the servers have been here for 20+ years, and the head sommelier Tommy since a year or two after they opened. He's a riot. There is a reason Five Crowns has been around since 1965- excellent quality, nice preparations and they still manage to keep up with the times. Check out the SideDoor too. Last year, they remodeled the bar and one of the dining rooms and created one of the best gastropubs in OC. SideDoor does attract a younger crowd and has some great dishes like prime-rib chili cheese fries, mac n' cheese and good charcuterie, plus a great beer selection. Cheers! read more

I first visited Five Crowns after I realized that I had too many of those Lawry's gift certificates to use up and that they were going to expire soon. Definitely a first world problem there. The restaurant has an English cottage theme and has a bar, called the Sidedoor, next door to the main dining room. The menu is actually pretty close to the Lawry's The Prime Rib restaurant, except that they don't have the actual carts going around serving up prime rib to you. That didn't stop me from ordering a prime rib, however. I was debating if I should go for the Henry VIII cut (the big cut) or something smaller. Wisdom kicked in and I ended up going for something a bit smaller, but ordered a side of roasted brussel sprouts and truffle mac & cheese along with a double of Macallan. The food did not disappoint. Despite the fact that you had to pour your own au jus sauce onto the prime rib, it was very much like the quality you'd get at their flagship restaurant in Beverly Hills. The bread they served here was actually also impressive in its own right: complete with sea salt and churned butter. The prime rib orders here also come with another two sides of your choosing, instead of having everything a la carte. There ended up being so much food in the end that we had to ultimately pack the brussel sprouts and mac & cheese and save them for another time. I recommend placing a reservation in advance so that you don't have to wait for seating during peak times. I also recommend not eating much earlier in the day if you know what's good for you. You should also allow plenty of extra time in order to find parking. I actually was not able to successfully find parking outside the restaurant and ended up having to park quite a way out during my first visit. In retrospect, I guess that long walk was a blessing in disguise: the walk back actually helped in digesting all that food! Went here for Thanksgiving with a party of 9 including 3 children. We excited to go here because we love Lawry's Beverly Hills. Very cute ambiance but unfortunately our party left VERY disappointed. We were seated 425pm, 445pm received our appetizers with all 3 children's meals even though we'd prefer all main courses served together "our waiter did not ask for our preference," we were patiently waiting for about 30 min then realized the other tables who had been seated at least 20 min after we had arrived were already being served their main courses. We waited almost an hour after appetizers then our main courses were finally served to us. By the time we got our food we lost our appetites. We complained to one of the managers Alice I think her name was.. She was very accommodating and apologized on behalf of the service. Unfortunately I hate to say we felt as if we were not tended to from the beginning due to race.. I can't ever say I've ever experienced such a feeling but at this establishment something was definitely off. read more

It hurts me to give this place a 3 star =( I thought long and hard about this one and really wanted to give it a 4, but just can't bring myself to it just because I was here for my birthday. I was the one who chosen this cute (hobbit like) location for my birthday and... I was a little disappointed. Here's the breakdown. Location: Awesome, cute and adorable little house that is cozy, comfortable and homie. Service: AWEFUL! Practically everything was wrong here. I asked for a medium rare stake, I got medium well... my friend asked for a rare... he got medium rare.... And, another friend asked for a cup of expesso... ending up getting two... we were splitting the check... she as hovering over us and staring... Food: You can never go wrong with Lawry's steak and their cream corn + mash potatoes... My steak (the medium rare side) was good and delicious. The salad paired on the side has a sourness to it which cuts the fat of the steak perfectly... The fries; definitely not a fan of. Come on Five Crowns, for being this type of restaurant, you need to pair your steak better than just french fries. Tip: Make reservation - cute place to come for a special celebration, but you'll probably never come back the 2nd time. Summit house has better service if you're looking for a hobbit feel type of restaurant. If you're purely into good prime rib, go to Houston's, which also has way better service than 5 crowns. read more

So the bro in law takes us out for a pre wedding dinner. We pull up to a mandatory valet..ehhh. Oh well it's a night worth spending a couple extra bucks so let's rock. Walk in and it's very nice...soft lighting...bar on the right side teeming with nightlife and funness. We get seated and order a bottle of wine. Didn't like it too much so the waitress brings us another no questions asked, but we keep the bottle anyways. It's alcohol and we'll manage. So we order: Foie gras with Pears - Not my fave by a long shot (and i love foie gras - sorry PETA). Lacked fatty liver punch and just was a tasteless pate. mac n cheese - very decadent and intense cheesy goodness but had a fondue quality. good but not great. Wild Mushroom Soup - Was fantastic with the bread and butter and yes i dipped a few prime rib pieces in it. Don't judge. Try it and you'll understand. Fries - They were delicious, i believe cooked in butter as a finish cause they were Paula Deen'esque. Meats: Cali Lamb Rack - Very well seasoned and cooked great but gamey prevented me from bite 2 or 3. Lawry's signature Ribeye - Great cut of steak and seasoned like wow. Cooked a little too rare as it left the meat by the bone basically raw. Otherwise a masterpiece. Five Crowns Cut Prime Rib - Just like the Ribeye...a great piece of meat and well done on multiple levels. Didn't wow me though on the overall flavor. The au jus and quality of meat should have made me close my eyes and dream but in all fairness it was pretty good. All in all, ambiance was good, service was great, food was good. I like eating prime rib, but I wouldn't say I crave it or go out of my way to find prime rib. But I've heard good things about Five Crowns, so we decided to check it out for NB Restaurant Week. I've driven by the restaurant on numerous occasions, and finally stepping into one of the oldest buildings around was definitely a trip. You may have to ask for the NB Restaurant Week menu. I'm sure most of their regular cliente couldn't care less about that, so I can see how they wouldn't be eagerly promoting it. They showcase both a "traditional" and a "progressive" menu -- the latter is their attempt at creating a modern and hip menu. You can choose items from either one. All that matters is prime rib is on there. For my first course, I chose the English onion soup. It was rich, creamy, and cheesy. It was okay. It had a slight hint of bone marrow flavor with a layer of oozy aged English cheddar goodness on top. How is it different from French onion soup, you ask? I have no idea, really. For the main entree, it was the prime rib. Tender, juicy, and with good marbling, the prime rib was excellent. I like mine cooked medium. The warn au jus poured on top gave the prime rib a nice, sparkling sheen. The first bite from the outside crust was a bit on the salty side, but once that bite was gone, the flavors from the inside were on point. I thought it was interesting how only the women received a bone on their prime rib, and the men did not. Coincidence or on purpose? The sides were simple, just a mere sidekick to the prime rib. I chose creamed corn and mashed potatoes. Both did its job, complimenting the main entree. For dessert, I was a bit disappointed at the Meyer lemon creme brulee. It's your run-of-the-mill creme brulee from a Vegas buffet. There's a subtle hint of lemon. After eating half, I simply grazed off the crusty, sugary top flavor and called it a night. Overall, I would say that the prime rib is pretty much comparable Lawry's (it should, they do own Five Crowns). Having been to the Lawry's in Beverly Hills, it's obviously a different experience and environment. Five Crowns is slow and relaxed, compared with the energetic and touristy vibe from Lawry's. If I ever craving prime rib again, and it just happens to fall on Restaurant week, I'll know where to go. read more

Soooo we recently visited Five Crowns, mainly because we drive by often and love the outside of the building with the old style telephone booth. We made random reservations Saturday, had availability pretty late that worked with my schedule and had an awesome dining experience. We ordered wine, shrimp cocktail, lobster bisque and prime rib that came with the most amazing creamed corn I've ever had! Our server, Paula was amazing. Very attentive and was one of the best servers I've ever had. Definitely an asset to Five Crowns. Next time we'd like to sit on the patio. It looked pretty relaxing out there. read more

The restaurant itself was beautiful. From the garden in the front, to the outdoor patio in the back. We came for the prime rib since many people have been raving how the prime rib is one of the best here. Glad we got to try it but not something I'd have again. The prime rib was flavorless, not to mention extremely chewy and tough. There was flavored salt and herbs provided on the side so you can season your own but that was not great. The bread offered in the beginning was so stale even my two year old did not want to eat it and she loves her bread and butter. Another thing I want to mention is how long it took to get our food. Our salads came out fairly quick but the main entrees (prime rib) took over half an hour after we've finished our salads. Finally, dessert took a really long time too. We were going to just cancel the desserts but we already waited so mind as well and we didn't think desserts would take that long. Our reservation was at 545 and we didn't leave until well almost 8pm. It was mostly from waiting for our food. We did not anticipate a normal dinner to last that long.
