We went to the Brentwood five Guys restaurant today. We ordered a regular cheese burger and a small cheese burger fries and a chocolate shake for $24. It was horrible. Both burgers tasted like the had been in the frig for a week the fries were soggy and the shake tasted like the ice cream was a year old. We threw it out. I had to give 1 star because have to. When me and my kids walked in there were 5 employees behind the counter not one of them greeted me. Then when I ask who was going to help me they all stood there looking at each then one said "I'm not helping them...you need to help them". It was super rude and ridiculous...so I asked for a manager who came out and his response was even more rude. But the lady with the red hair was super nice and did a great job with our shakes. What's the big deal about this chain burger joint? Digger's, Lumpy's, In-N-Out and even Chili's don't seem to be losing any business over them and here's why: The burger - fresh meat patties formed on the grill but tasteless and crumbles apart on bite. The fries - don't expect bright white french fries ala In-N-Out. The fries are oil saturated to the point of translucency. It's like biting into salty silicone - I kid you not. What a waste of fresh potatoes. The mushrooms - dark, oily bits and pieces. Are they mushrooms or fatty scrappings from the grill top. A Bacon Burger is a BACON BIT burger. Oil soaked, chalk hard bits of bacon like that stuff you sprinkle on salads. Seems like everything is TAKE-OUT even if you're eating there. Everything is served (shoved in) in a brown bag. This place has really went down hill. Everything was dirty. Its not very appetizing to look at a dirty overflowing garbage and a messy kitchen. The aprons the employees wore also looked like they had not been washed in a while. Bathroom was disgusting and the fountain drink dispenser was filthy and leaking on the floor. This was a pretty good meal. I got a cheeseburger with everything on it, a regular Cajun fries, and a soda. I could barely finish my meal. The burger was huge and juicy. It had that meaty, sloppy, burger feel to it and the patties were cooked medium. The greasiness was a little overwhelming, but it was definitely a satisfying burger. Also, the seasoning on the Cajun fries is top-notch and they are definitely not stingy in portions. My cup was overflowing and there were more tossed into the bag for good measure. Decided to see for myself what all the hype is about! While standing in the looooong line (you think they were giving stuff away for free!) I got to survey the menu. Free toppings on your burger - can't beat that! I chose the little cheesburger (one patty) and had the basics (mushrooms, ketchup, mayo, tomatoes) Next time I will get adventurous and go with the jalapeno peppers and hot sauce! My husband had the cheesebrurger (2 patties) with everything on it. I actually thought about getting the 2 patty cheesburger and glad I didn't. The little cheeseburger with the toppings is more than enough.The burger was so juicy! Plus the fries (large) serving was enough for us to share. We got the regular fries but will try the cajun fries next. They were a little on the soft side (I like mine crispy) but still good. Free peanuts in shell while you wait. You do see lots of folks eating peanuts and shells on the table and floors, but luckily, they have the staff cleaning up really quickly! I don't drink soda but was impressed with the touch screen soda machine. There are 2 machines and it only has room for one drink to fill up, (no multiple spouts). I've already reviewed the Pleasant Hill location. On to the newest location in Brentwood... Let me start by saying, my guy was pretty ecstatic upon hearing that Five Guys was coming out to our hood. In his opinion, Five Guys beats In N Out. Again, that's only his opinion. I disagree. Regardless, it's always good to have more options out here in the far East Bay. What we ordered: Me- little (single) cheeseburger. Lettuce, pickles, tomatoes and onions. Cherry Coke (not as good as Pepsi, but satisfactory all the same). Steve C.- cheeseburger (double). Mayo, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled onions, ketchup and mustard. Diet Coke. Kids- little (single) cheeseburgers with varying condiments. Cokes all around. As always, we shared a large Five Guys style fries. ***I've since tried their cajun style fries and found them to be overly seasoned. This place has the most consistent tasting delicious burger in town. I'd say it tastes just like mamas burgers from back in the day, but my mama never made my burgers this good. Flavorful, juicy and delicious! They also make excellent shakes. Not like most other burger joints, Five Guys shakes are rich and thick. Perfect with a juicy burger. No need for the double patty burger unless you're that hungry. The Mini is a single burger which is plenty for anyone, plus fresh cut fries!! You can't go wrong here. This location is pretty good. The staff is fast, friendly and polite. The location is excellent as well. I would go five stars but more times than not they have gotten some part of my order wrong..... they happily re-make it but it's a pain to wait while the others are eating and I'm starving. Not much different to me than In n Out as far as burgers go. That's to say, it's ok, love that they use fresh beef which puts it up a notch over the major fast food chains, but otherwise, it's just a decent burger undeserving of all the hype in my humble opinion. Their "little" burgers are single patty while their regular burgers are double. The "little" burgers are what I consider a normal sized burger-- noticeably bigger than In N Out's regular burger but I also think more expensive (although it's been a long time since I've been to In N Out). One thing that puts Five Guys above In N Out is their bacon option. Baaaaaaaa-con. Nothing else about the burger stood out. I think I would've equally enjoyed a whopper from Burger King--at least the whopper has a flame-broiled taste. They offer a ton of toppings including jalapenos, grilled onions, bbq sauce, and A1 as well as all the standard stuff, all at no extra charge, so that's nice too. I would've preferred whole lettuce and onion slices rather than the chopped they serve on the burgers but that's just a personal pet peeve. They have one of those high tech soda fountains with a bazillion Coke flavor options which is sure to make soda drinkers happy. Fries are decent as well. You can tell they're freshly made but taste-wise aren't anything more special that what you could make yourself at home. They are large cut and fairly soggy. As opposed to In N Out's shoe-string cut and fairly soggy. It's a little scary to see on their menu that an order of regular fries are just about as many calories as a burger. Not that anybody who goes here really cares about the crap they're/we're ingesting. Housed in the former Hollywood Video, the place is one big square that looks and feels like a white sterile cafeteria. Doesn't feel like much thought went into the decor or organization. They could take a lesson from Chipotle, which also keeps it simple but does so in a quietly refined way. They do have outdoor seating for those of you who want a view of Winco shoppers. So now I can say we tried it but we'll most likely never come back. Price, ambience, flavor--there's just not anything about this place that stands out. Other than the bacon. read more

I work VERY close to this place, so I was excited about a new food place opening up near by. I waited a couple of weeks after they had opened to visit since it always seemed incredibly packed. I had heard rumors that this place was better than In-N-Out. As a big fan of In-N-Out, I had pretty high expectations when I finally went in. The place is pretty open. Lots of seating, although the tables/chairs are pretty close together. The line was pretty long, so it gave me a good amount of time to look at their menu. The menu isn't too big. They have hamburgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese/vegetarian sandwiches, and fries. For the burgers, you have the choice of A LOT of different toppings for free. Pretty nifty. If you're particular about the types of things you don't like on your burger, then make sure you tell them 'cause the default burger has all types of veggies on it. I figured the difference between "Cheeseburger" and "Little Cheeseburger" was that the latter was meant for kids. I had a Cheeseburger with everything on it with some regular fries. It was a lot more expensive than I would have figured. (I was expecting In-N-Out prices.) I was grumpy about it, but figured it would be worth it since the food was supposed to be really good. The wait was VERY long. Maybe 15 to 20 minutes. I understand they have a lot of people to make food for, but at the same time it is a fast food restaurant, not a sit-in diner or something. Anyway, while waiting, I took advantage of their free peanuts. So. The time came. My number was finally called. The burger is huge. The fries are hot. I'm excited. Cut to the chase: A couple bites into my burger and I'm pretty disappointed. The veggies taste kind of old, soggy. The meat tastes strange. The fries are alright, but it doesn't make up for the fact that I waited 15 minutes for alright fries and a bleehhh burger. Decided right then and there not to go back. Friend wanted to check the place out a week later though. Ordered the "little burger" so I wouldn't sit there hungry. Still the same bleh burger. Reaffirmed my decision not to go back. If you want a good old fashioned burger five guys is the place for you. I love all the toppings you can put on it. I normally go "all the way" which includes mayo, mustard, ketchup, lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, mushrooms and pickles. There are also other items to add on like BBQ sauce, A1 steak sauce, jalapeños, relish and so on for no extra charge. Be sure you know the difference between a little and a regular burger. A little burger has just one patty while and regular one has two patties. One regular order of fries is enough to feed two people. It is a ton of fries. They are fried in peanut oil I believe and they come out flavorful with just the right amount of crispness. The potatoes are fresh cut and they have a white board that tells you where their potatoes are from that day. If you want your fries with a kick, try the cajun style ones. They have a coke machine with just about any flavor combination you can think of. It's fun to try out regular flavors along mixing and matching. And I can't forget how they have free peanuts to snack on while you're waiting for your order to come out. This is my current favorite fast food burger joint. read more

For as long as I've lived in California, I personally have always believed In 'N Out was a bit overhyped. I find their flavors to be a little one dimensional. I'm sure I'll get a bit of heat for such blasphemy but I've been the sheep for too many years. I now want to be the shepherd of Five Guys haha. Man this place sure does know how to make their burgers. I love that we can add toppings for no charge and the little option is more than plentiful as well as one order of fries! (They basically fill half the paper bag full of fries and its plenty for two to share!) My boyfriend isn't one to like to try new things, but he admits that this place rocks better burgers. My only issue with the place is the name. I mean cmon... Five Guys?? I've been wanting to try this place ever since it opened. I finally got my chance a month ago and I have been back three times now. I always get a cheeseburger (double patty) "all the way" with grilled mushrooms and onions. The little burgers come with a single patty. They have a good selection of add ons without becoming too overwhelming and there is no extra charge for it. The burger does get messy to eat but you know what that's just how I like my burgers. If you prefer burgers with a knife and fork then this might not be the place for you. The meat is always been juicy, cooked just right and the bread fresh, never dry. At first I was not a fan of the Cajun fries but after trying them I now crave for them. These are whole cut fries with the skin still on. They could make them a bit more crunchy but both the plain and the Cajun have a good flavor to them. Be hungry if you order large fries because they do stack em high. I order a regular size plain and regular Cajun which is plenty for my family of four. Now let me tell you about their soda machine. If heaven has a soda machine this would be it. A touch screen allows you to select a myriad of your favorite sodas with all of their different flavor options. Now that I have not seen anywhere else. If you decide to check this place out then definitely take advantage of ordering online. There's nothing better than arriving and having your burger already made and waiting for you. Of the three times I have been here I have always ordered online and have never had a problem. I'm sure all of those folks I've passed in line waiting to order will become online orderers after seeing me chomp down my burger while they are still waiting for theirs to be made. Stopped by to get a cheeseburger fries. This place is usually my go to burger place, but not necessarily this location. Here is the skinny: Food: The little cheesburger was ok but it's starting to lose its charm since it's a more pricier option then their other competitors. The flavor and portion was fine but nothing special. Lately, Wendy's $1.59 Jr. bacon cheeseburger has just as much flavor and more worth it. "Not bad but nothing special". The fries has definitely gone downhill since they first opened. It was under cooked and very mealy and no crunch. Total dis. Use to be one of my favorite fries but this one was sad. Service: Service was fairly fast, around 5-10 minutes. Not super fast but they had a smaller crew. Da place: Typical Five Guys place. They all look the same. Not sure if it is just me, but the quality of the burgers and fries are horrible. The last few times I have gone the same problems below happened. The fries are always very soggy and not season well. Not really greasy, but like they have been sitting for a while. This is even when I seen them just made. I think they need to change their oil or turn up the temp. The burgers also seem like they have gone down hill also. I think the patties are smaller, but not a big deal. Meat quality seems to be more grisselly. I have gotten chunks a few times. YUCK!!! These are still the best burgers anywhere! You just have to know how to order, and order to your taste. I keep it simple with just a cheese burger with lettuce, tomato and mayo. You have to eat it there since the bun gets mushy wrapped in foil and taken home. The crisp on the bun really makes a difference! The burger is also perfect. I don't even eat the fries (which I'm sure are good). In fact I am allergic to peanuts so I risk my health going in there but it's so worth it! read more

Great burgers! They beat all the other burger places in this area because to me being able to choose my condiments and produce is great. They offer so many ways to make the burger right for the customers while other places don't let you have much say. I was at first worried about the jalapeños because some are way to hot to even be editable but just in case your wondering these are perfect, not to spicy but not to boring. I like that with what you order its not going to cost you to add in what you like, for me i love sauteed mushrooms on a burger. =P anyways i actually like this place but its not somewhere that I would eat it at every week lol. but the service was great and the burger was yummy fries were good could be a little more crispier. Our first inpression when we walked into Five Guys Burger and Fries was it reminded us of In & Out Burger. No wonder people compare them.... One thing that was different were the big boxes of peanuts up by the counter that were complimentary to snack on while waiting for your order, so that was a nice added surprise. They offer a variety of ingredients on your burgers & dogs that are included in the price...all your standards plus a few additional items you'd normally pay extra for. We ordered a "small" burger w/cheese...basically a single 1/4lb patty w/ 1 slice of American cheese, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, tomato, lettuce, ketchup & mustard, a kosher hot dog w/mustard, onions & relish and a regular order of fries. The dog was $4, the burger $4.69 and the fries $3. The burger was just OK. Not a lot of flavor considering there were quite a few ingredients, but the main problem was the burger was so over cooked...So dry! Not juicy at all. Plus, it was luke warm at best...mainly because the girl doing the assembling put all the ingredients on the bun the minute the burger hit the grill. It took a while to cook & the grilled onions & mushrooms that I assume started out hot, got cold sitting there. She also didn't melt the cheese on the burger, just laid it on top after she put the patty on the bun. So everything except the patty was cold. The bun was nicely toasted and had a little crunch to it but the burger could have been so much better had she been a little more generous with the condiments (almost no mustard & ketchup) and had it been hot. The hot dog was even worse...very small and again hardly any mustard, relish or onions & barely warm. Definitely not worth $4...my husband called it the $1.50 dog... Really seemed as if the kids working there weren't properly trained and didn't know what they were doing. A shame because the food could easily have tasted so much better if someone who actually knew how to cook was working the grill. Nations makes a much better burger for the $$. So why give this place a 4 star rating? Because the saving grace of the meal were the FRIES. They were SPECTACULAR!....they're definitely 5 star fries!. They were fresh (not frozen) medium cut potatoes that were perfectly cooked and just delicious. And a huge portion. The regular order was more than enough for 2 people. They are the one and only reason we'll go back. Haven't had fries that good in many moons....the ideal burger meal for us would be a Nation's burger with Five Guys fries....YUM! 8/26/13...update. Tried 5 Guys again today and this time the burger Was definitely better, more ingredients, much juicier and better tasting but still not hot enough. I've been to Five Guys in Pleasant Hill and had an okay experience. We decided to try this location once it opened. It isn't that they are nasty but I just do not get the hype. I would much rather go to in n out any day! Anyways, we ordered our burgers with our desired toppings which is pretty cool that they have so many to chose from. The burgers themselves were okay nothing you can't make at home . My biggest complaint is that there buns cannot handle their burgers. They almost always fall apart instantly. Not only do yet get soggy but they're cold. Maybe toasting them would help keep the burgers together. Food was mediocre, service was alright but in n out still beats them. read more
