With my remaining healthy arteries slowly starting to clog as I type this, I can only hope my Cardiologist can smell the AWESOMENESS that was Five Guys. So, everyone I know was talking Five Guys for months. I'm not really a fast food burger enthusiast but I decided to see what the hype was all about. I ordered the "Little Cheeseburger" with grilled onions, mushrooms, ketchup, A1, lettuce and tomatoes. Not only did something titled "little" fill me up, but every bite was foodgasmic. Oh and did I mention I had their peanut oil cajun french fries? I ordered the "small" and got a BAG full of fries. (It was entertaining to see the fry guy stuff 3lbs of fries into a coffee cup) The ONLY thing I feel missing from this place are shakes. Majorly overrated. Came here after doing a bunch errands and was expecting to have a big meal. This place is NOT going to take shine away from In-N-Out. I came to reastaurant during a very slow time in the restaurant. There were more people behind the counter than in the restaurant. It took about 15 min to get my food. My order wasn't even that complicated. Probaly not coming back. If I want to pay burger for the same price, I'm going to Fudruckers. I heard such great things about Five Guys, but honestly, I'm not very impressed. People were hyping this up as the best burger ever, but unfortunately, I've been to a dozen mom and pop joints that blow this out of the water. I mean, if I was on a road trip, and one of these was near the freeway in a stripmall, I would go there in a heartbeat before WacDonalds or Jack in the Crack. Maybe even before In N Out, but it's a very close race. The main benefit from choosing Five Guys over In N Out is the exciting choices in free condiments. Much more extensive than the Mormon joint, including such favorites as A-1 steak sauce, jalapeños, and barbecue sauce. I decided to go "all the way" on my cheeseburger, because that's how I roll. This included grilled onions and mushrooms along with the classic burger toppings. This is definitely a topping-focused burger joint, and I'm not sure how I philosophically align with that mindset. There is no issue with a variety of toppings, it being the spice of life and all, but Five Guys' buns are not equipped to handle such a load. The all-important bun integrity was virtually out the window before I even took a bite. It's certainly to follow the don't-put-it-down method of consumption, otherwise you're screwed. Most of the time, I'd rather have the well-balanced albeit simpler In N Out burger due to its proper ratio of beef:cheese:topping:bun ratio. Don't get me wrong, this was a delicious burger, served hot with fresh ingredients. Well seasoned, melty gooey, sweaty, but the buns are just hella weak. Maybe step it a notch above Costco-grade buns, and you could handle all your creative toppings. I went with the regular fries, because that's one of my litmus tests of any restaurant. Such a simple thing, but so hard to consistently execute to my standard. Five Guys brings a fresh cut skin-on medium-wide gague fry. One of my favorite styles. Unfortunately, the fries weren't crispy. Potatoey, well-seasoned, hotter-than-a-whorehouse-on-nickel-night, they were, but crispy they were not. I need my fries crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. If you can't do that, don't even bother. And don't try to make up for your lazy fry cookery by giving me like 4 pounds with my regular fry order, I'd rather have 8 oz that were properly cooked. That being said, they crush my well done In N Out fries by a mile. I applaud any fast food establishment that doesn't steam their grade F beef/starch in a secret kitchen while they inject everything with high fructose corn syrup. And have every single ingredient centrally processed and preserved in pouches. Kudos to Five Guys for giving us another option for real food. Greasy and caloric food it is, but it's still real food. But, if you claim to be the best burger, and you boast that on every single corner of your establishment, sirs, I beg to differ. Furthermore, if this is the best burger in your town, I feel sorry for your town (I'm talking to you Washington DC). read more

I've heard about Five Guys from my east coast friends for years, but never had the chance to try it until I heard about this location in Fremont that opened recently. Overall, I was very impressed. In many ways it feels like it's trying to copy and improve on In-N-Out, so you can't help but compare every little thing to that other gold standard of burger chains. The decor is fairly similar: clean, bare, lots of red and white. I did note that Five Guys seems to enjoy patting themselves on the back a lot, as the whole restaurant (and even the soda cups) is full of award mentions, restaurant review quotes blown up into poster size, newspaper articles about the chain, etc. (Is the purpose to convince you that you're in a good restaurant *after* you've tasted the food? I don't get it.) The employees are plentiful and cheery, and seem to be trained for good customer service. I witnessed one employee who, when a customer couldn't find a free high chair for their child, actually went next door to another restaurant and borrowed one. (Oddly, I could only spot two high chairs in the entire restaurant to begin with, so I'm not sure if this is just a "new restaurant" glitch or what. I'm assuming they have more on order...) The menu at Five Guys is a little deeper than In-N-Out, which I appreciated: the list of condiments is long and contains some surprising options (green peppers anyone?) Perhaps my favorite difference? You can get bacon on your burger! The fries are plentiful and offer a "cajun" option for a little extra kick (although, I didn't find them to be nearly as spicy as I expected them to be.) They don't seem to get as limp as In-N-Out's fries do, but I personally didn't enjoy them as much as In-N-Out's. They do make up for it with quantity, though. Beware: a small order of fries is plenty for two people! It's true, they fill the entryway of the restaurant with giant bags of potatoes, and they have a sign by the register that tells you where today's potatoes came from. To me, if feels a little gimmicky. Frankly I don't really care where my potatoes came from, and likewise I doubt most people know enough about potato farming to care. I'd much rather know where the beef came from and how it was raised! Overall I give it high marks. The food is tasty and you get lots of it. The downside is it's a little pricy, especially when compared to In-N-Out, but it's a good option if you want a larger meal or a little more variety. read more

In & Out is a bit less expensive, and IMHO, has better fries and comparable burgers. Probably because we lack any better alternatives here.... I stopped by here again after taking a rest from the over-crowded visits experienced here previously. Let me first start by saying that the restaurant is well run and kept clean and seems to be less cafeteria-like now. But, and I cannot emphasize this enough, what the heck is up with the 10 lbs of fries they sell there as a "regular" order??!!! I hate throwing away food, and about 75% of the fries from my order didn't get eaten, on top of the ridiculous $2.89 that they charge for them. Really??? Don't order the fries unless you have at least 3-4 others to share them with. If you're by yourself, I suggest going without unless you wish to either toss most of them out or you later wish you had (!). My burger (w/bacon)? It was OK. Nothing special. Worth $12 for lunch? We have a few choices in Pacific Commons -- In-n-out, Habit Burger and also Five Guys. Five Guys seems like the worst of both worlds. At In-n-out it's really fast and they have a drive through, and also very cheap. Habit Burger has a little bit better burgers, but is a little more expensive. Five Guys is more expensive than in-n-out or Habit Burger, but also not as good as either. Additionally, look at the pictures here on yelp for Five Guys, it's really sloppy. Ingredients are just slopped on without much care and the burger is just wrapped tightly enough to keep it from falling out but it all falls out when you open it anyways. The one upside I can see Five Guys has though is the wide array of choices for your burger. Other than that it's nothing too fancy. read more

Finally, my favorite burger chain has arrived on the west coast, and only slightly worse for wear. Five Guys is famous back east, and for good reason. Much like In n Out, Five Guys boasts fresh ingredients, hand made meals, above-fast food average service, and delicious taste. One cannot deny that this stuff is straight up quality. The highlight, of course, are the yummy burgers, which come in regular(2 patties) or little (just 1). For me, a little burger is sufficient, especially when loaded with all the complimentary toppings, which include grilled onions and mushrooms. The variety is impressive, and should be taken advantage of. As with every other Five Guys, peanuts are plentiful and free. The hot dogs are similarly sizeable and also come with all the same trimmings. As someone who is not particularly fond of steak fries, it says something that I find the fries more than adequate. Let them sit too long and they get soggy.l, so when you get them, take them out of the bag (you'll find a tremendous amount still at the bottom of the bag) and pour them out for maximum enjoyment. Both regular and cajun fries are equally great, but the cajun style provides a not-too-common taste, and should be tried at least once. As noted, service is prompt and sufficient, and youll find the restaurant itself roomy and bright. It's more than you would pay for a fast food burger, but if freshness and quality is important to you and if you have any sense for food, you'll find that ther is quite the value for your money here. One issue remains though- you'll find that the buns are rather bready, for lack of a better word. Five Guys burgers are meant to be eaten with condiments. Without them, the bun may be a bit overwhelming. That said, there is no reason not to enjoy your hot dog or burger with everything on it, and with that, you have here a great chain that has finally made it's presence known. I ate here on two separate occasions and both times were mediocre. The burgers were sloppily made, the meat wasn't seasoned and it was a little on the dry side. Also, it cost the same amount as a sit-down restaurant burger, which kinda baffles me. I could have walked down the street to In-n-Out or drove 5 minutes to that Giant Burger stand off Fremont for a better or at least comparable burger at half the price. The restaurant is also obnoxiously plastered with signs touting itself as the Best Burger in Delaware and the Best Deal in Washington, DC, which just makes me feel bad for people who live in those places. i came here on a friday night just before they were going to close to try the "in n out of the east coast". it was a lot bigger than i had expected, and i settled on the little bacon cheeseburger with mayo, relish, onions, mushrooms, jalapenos, lettuce, tomatoes, grilled onions, and mustard (had to reference the menu online to write all of the toppings). we also got a large order of cajun fries for 3 to share. it doesnt seem like too much (3 burgers, 1 order of large fries and one drink for about $22), but itd probably be more cost friendly if they had meal deals. anyways, it didnt take too long for the food to come out since there was no one ahead of us. the meat was really good, and i definitley appreciated all the free toppings, and im a slower eater, but man, my bread got SOGGY fast. the cajun fries were pretty good, it comes in a big old paper bag. i think in general, its really hard to beat the taste of in n out burgers, but five guys has the toppings, cajun fries, and better meat patty on them. but id have to say in n out is still better! read more

I am glad to see Five Guys opening up on the West Coast. The burgers are good. You really can get away with ordering the junior burger, but like me you probably will not just on principle. I love all of the topping options. The fries are actually my favorite part of the meal every time. Two people can comfortably split a regular order. Was very excited to hear that this joint opened (found out from my friend and went here the next day). The restaurant kind a reminds me of In and Out. The only difference is that you can actually add your own toppings and the extra fries that they put in in the cup/bag. The beef patty tasted fresh and not as oily as other competitors and the fries are freshly made with skins on it. I just wish that when you eat in that they would give you a tray and not just hand you a brown bag with everything in it and that they have combo meals (it gets pricey if you ask me). Five Guys is known as the "In-N-Out of the East Coast." There are many similarities; simple menu, fresh beef and a red and white motif. I expected Five Guys to remain a regional chain due to their commitment to freshness, like In-N-Out whose growth is limited to the capabilities of their supply chain shipping everything fresh from Southern California. I was wrong, they are now not only national, but in In-N-Out's turf. I know they are also opening a bunch of locations in California, probably to justify setting up the distribution so the quality can be high like the East Coast. I am no stranger to their burgers, but I was curious to see if they can maintain their standards while being on the opposite coast. They did. Burgers are very comparable to In-N-Out's. In-N-Out burger buns are way better but there is a wider variety of burger toppings at Five Guys (meaning there is more than three ways of customizing your burger). Burger patties seem bigger at Five Guys. Fries are way better than the In-N-Out offering and their servings are gargantuan. One order of regular fries at Five Guys is probably equal to at least two orders at In-N-Out. However, the food here is much more expensive than our homegrown burger chain. In-N-Out has better step up their game. Five Guys has not only invaded their turf, but also their niche. read more

Five guys is a-ok in my opinion! First of all, don't compare this place to In-N-Out. If you do, it'll always lose because In-n-Out is a CA burger and therefore always more awesome :) Now Five Guys is an East Coast chain and reminds me of backyard cookout burgers... and sometimes, I just am in the mood for these kind of burgers (and don't feel like cooking). I always get the cheeseburger with lettuce, tomatoes, mayo, mustard, and ketchup. Just like if I were to cook this at home. Now if they wanted to be super awesome, they would give you the option of a fried egg--because c'mon eggs on burgers are amazing! Since they don't, they are a solid 3 stars. I actually like soggy fries, so I love the fries here. I understand that most people don't like it though. I love that they fill up a cup with fries, and then just throw an extra cup on top of all your stuff. Good thing I always eat the food there, otherwise I might have a greasy mess by the time I get home. Don't you hate it when you're trying to eat a burger and when you take a bite trying to get a good combination of bread, lettuce, tomatoes meat and the condiments, all you get is bread and lettuce. Well, that's pretty much what happened at Five Guys. It's not that the meat was too small, it was because the buns were so flimsy that the meat just moves to the bottom whenever you take a bite. Is this place better than In-N-Out? No, but it is a decent tasting burger. Helpful Tip: Get the little burger. I'm only giving it two stars because I had a REALLY bad experience with this place. My friend and I came here, because it was the new place on the block, at night, around a half an hour before they closed. We both got hot dogs, because we weren't feeling like we should pay loads of money for a fast food burger we weren't going to smother with toppings. Did I mention this place is expensive? Don't go here if you don't feel like paying restaurant prices for fast food. As we ate our food we felt really weird. So we stopped. It looked weird and greasy. The oil from the fries had leaked out of the brown paper bag within ten minutes. Talk about gross... Then the next day, I was literally in bed until 5 or 6pm because I felt so sick. She was sick too. Good thing it was summer, or that would have been all bad. Their food is overpriced. Why get Five Guys when you can get burgers at In-N-Out down the street or hot dogs at Costco? It's far cheaper and better quality. The only reason would be to get a bunch of toppings you can't find anywhere else. Or because Costco is closed and you are desperately craving a hot dog. What's the difference between the burger and little burger? 1. Burger = 2 patties. Little burger = 1 patty. The bread kind of tastes like pan de sal, which is not a bad thing. It's nice that you can get as many condiments as you want for the same price. The fries are shareworthy; definitely more than enough for a little girl like me. This place is very reminiscent of a midwest in and out burger. I had the VEGGIE sandwich. This basically was the burger with no bun. It was pretty tasty, yet I wonder if it's all the oil they saute their mushrooms and onions in. We also got regular Cajun fries. It was tasty. But you need only to order the regular. They give it to you in a bag and they overflow the container, with extreme excess into the bag. My brother got the regular burger. They also have a "little" burger. We didn't know the difference at first, but when his regular burger came with TWO burger patties, we are guessing the little burger has one patty. This place is super casual and gets the job done. Nothing here is healthy. You don't come here and expect to see people you would bump into at the gym here. That's probably the main difference between this and in and out... Good burger, but didn't live up to the hype for me. Still prefer In 'n Out :) maybe that marks me as a Cali girl. The buns were too soggy and I dislike the way they wrap it up so that it steams itself through again. I feel dirty, I put 5 guys in my mouth....(drums and cymbals) All joking aside this place has a dependable burger, it's completely customizable and is properly prepared retaining great flavor you are looking for. Many more options vs. their In and Out competition, but they stick to the stuff they are good at, burgers and hot dogs. Fries come in massive portions, they scoop and fill a brown bag all the way to the top. This is a good sign as they aren't skimpy. Condiments are readily available and the service stations are clean. They get all the little details right. If you are adverse to heavy seasoning, request that they go light on it. Lunchtime rush here is bad, the line can go out the door, so get here early if you are craving a burger. Minus 1 star for price. Yes I know it's supposed to be cheap eats, but I can drop 10 bucks for a simple burger/fries/drink. It becomes a splurge at this point. I think I came in here with such high expectations that I ended up disappointed in the end. Like other Yelpers here I really don't see what the fuss is about. The burgers are good, but they aren't to die for. The fries, well, they're just fries. They do give you a LOT. Althoug they may tell you that the regular is for 2 people and the large is for 3 - the regular is more than enough 'cause they'll give you more. On a positive note, I did like the fact that all of the toppings are free and there are so many choices, and having the toppings did indeed make the burger much tastier. It's hard not compare Five Guys to our good ol' In N Out they are somewhat similar . I had high hopes before coming here but left pretty disappointed. The prices are pretty high for a fast food burger joint. 2 cheeseburgers, 2 drink, and a small fries came out to 20 bucks. Besides the meat being really tender and juicy, everything else about the burger was pretty meh. The bun was on the flaky side and the cheese wasn't even melted. Thank you but I'll stick to the can't go wrong In N Out burger. The free peanuts help, but not really. read more

The burgers here are pretty good but not as great as people rave about. It's better than McDonald's and Burger King, but I'm still not sure how it rates compared to In-N-Out. This place is more pricey. Their topping selection is pretty decent, and they all come at no additional cost. And the fries are awesome. So me and some buddies were hangin' out one day and I randomly ask, "hey, have any of you tried 5 Guys Burgers?" and so one of my buddies answers yes and begins to describe his experience which ended up literally being a 5 minute storyline of his greatest burger fantasy before I had to snap him out of his euphoric state. None of us could stop laughing cuz he was so descriptive with the burger and fries. Anyways, just for laughs me and the same group of buddies go to check it out together the next week. This definitely fulfilled our burger fantasies just like our buddy described it a week earlier. By the time we were done eating our burgers and cajun fries we were tempted to order more but instead, as a test, we took a five minute break and realized our stomachs would have exploded had we kept eating. A lot of folks call Five Guys an East Coast version of In-and-Out. That comparison comes to mind when you first enter the door because the decor theme is similar - red-and-white checkered tile around the store and, of course, burgers and fries. In this review, I will compare four things (burgers, fries, drinks and price) and give my thoughts on how each burger joint stacks up (also, see 'Big Picture' at the end of the review). 1) Burgers - When you go to Five Guys, you order one of four kinds of burger - hamburger, cheeseburger, bacon burger or bacon burger with cheese. While the price of the burger is not cheap (more on that later), you do get an unlimited number of toppings for FREE with the burger - from basic ketchup and mustard to grilled onions and grilled mushrooms. While In-and-Out has a similar variety of burger styles to choose from, I give Five Guys the edge here because of the free toppings and the size of the burgers. 2) Fries - Five guys has two types of fry styles - Five Guys style and Cajun style. Five Guys style was a little too plain for me but the Cajun style rocked. Cajun style is spicy but not hot spicy. Also, malted vinegar is available to top the fries (ketchup, of course is available). I am not a fan of the In-and-Out style of fries (and don't know anyone who is) so the edge here goes to Five Guys IF you go with the Cajun style fries. Otherwise, it's even. 3) Drinks - Sodas are available at Five Guys. In-and-Out has the best milkshakes that I have ever had from a fast food burger joint. On drinks, In-and-Out has the edge. 4) Price - I can easily spend 10 dollars on one trip to Five Guys for a loaded bacon burger, Cajun fries and drink. At In-and-Out, the burger, fries and milkshake might run me 7 dollars maximum. The edge here goes to In-and-Out. 5) Big picture - If are looking for an occasional burger splurge, I highly recommend Five Guys - it's a little pricey but not so outrageous that you feel totally cheated. It's more like a guilty pleasure. In-and-Out delivers a good dependable burger experience cheaper (plus an awesome milkshake) that you can certainly do more often without breaking the bank. read more

Had lunch here today and all I have to say is: Wow!! I loved the burger! I had the little bacon burger with grilled onions, mayo, mustard, ketchup, pickles and BBQ sauce. It was dreamy! The only reason I give this place four stars is due to the fries. I don't really like "fresh cut fries" and compared to In-N-Out they're a bit lacking but the burger is more than worth it! Totally agree with the folks that compare this to In & Out. Nothing to Rave about , a ton of toppings don't make up for the real taste of a hamburger Went there for lunch on Wednesday. Price kind of high for a burger but since my son and daughter-in-law treated... Aside from the Free peanuts and the Specific labelled 57 Heinz,, nothing to rave about..can't believe the kudos and awards from all over the country that raves....OBVIOUSLY those folks have never tasted In & Out burgers... I WANT TO SEE my burger and all the stuff not wrapped tightly in aluminum foil where I had to unwrap the foil and then lift the bun up to see what was on the hamburger. The meat did not have any taste. I guess folks love the toppings, which were OK but for the size of the hamburger how much can you put on it? We went at lunch time the fries although big size were soggy....they need to change the oil. Reminded me of the OLD Kwik Ways in Oakland, they cut fresh fries but ALWAYS Soggy and Oily after frying... Oh, BTW yesterday, wifey and I had to stop by In & Out for a REAL burger....yup got the Animal style..but no double double. And the fries were just right, hot and just out from the fryer... Warning, not a place to go on a first date as there is no neat way to eat these burgers. With any reservations aside, you get a 2 pattied burger with a host of free toppings to choose from including grilled mushrooms, bell peppers, BBQ sauce, and the list goes on. Fries come in a soda sized cup overflowing into your bag that you'll think you really scored!! Finally, while you are waiting for all this yummy goodness, they have free peanuts for you to munch on. I'm a snob. After hearing everyone say that this place is beter than In-n-Out, I HAD to try it. There is NO CONTEST. In-n-Out is still the winner. East Coasters, you can keep your White Castle and Five Guys. You still know In-n-Out is infinitesimally better than Five Guys. /endrivalryrant Back to the actual topic. Five Guys isn't bad by any means. The burgers are a pretty good size and the regular fries are huge. I like how you can add condiments to your burger free of charge, but at the same time, sometimes it's a little overwhelming. However, since the burgers aren't as good as In-n-Out yet still much more expensive, I don't want to give this place four/five stars. It's a good but pricey burger. read more

I got the regular cheeseburger with all the toppings that are not an additional charge. I heard great things about this place and it is comparable to In N Out. However, I thought the meat patty was not very flavorful or juicy at all . They are massive and they will fill you up but if you want a great tasting burger, I would go to In N Out for that. The only positive about this place is that they offer free peanuts. I love this place! I was so excited when I saw them moving into this spot! Yes, the menu is simple, but the burgers are good and meet my mom's criteria of being real, identifiable meat. The ingredients are clearly fresh, and the taste is amazing. I usually get a little cheese burger, and cajun fries. The cheese burger is always delicious. The cajun fries are good, but a little salty. I always leave satisfied. read more

Mmmmhhhh.... Come on ppl. This is a fast food chain. If you are sick of In N Out and want something more on your hamburger than (onions, pickles, lettuce and tomato). This is the place you need to come. And then also try their hot dogs and fries and you won't be too disappointed. read more
