You wont believe the amount of fries that you get even when you order a regular size. These truly are the best burgers anywhere. They put In-N-Out to shame. (I never understood what it was about I-N-O.) There are so many ways to personalize your burger. They are very filling, juicy and taste excellent. I love to eat the fries with the malt vinegar! Don't forget the eat the peanuts in the shell (they are in barrels around the restaurant). So great to have them here in San Diego, I missed them dearly from the East Coast! read more

Delicious tasting fresh burgers. Apparently, there are over 30,000 ways to order at Five guys. I love their complimentary all you can eat peanuts. People like to compare this place with In & out because they both serve premium fresh burgers that aren't frozen. I don't know if it's fair to compare. I wouldn't prefer one over the other! I think the only draw back to Five guys is their extremely high calorie count. When I was younger I wouldn't even look at that stuff, but now that my belly is starting to pop out, i take notice to it. A regular hamburger is like over 700 calories. I've never gone to this place until recently. My friend told me about the one in Los Angeles and I found out one opened here so I went there on my lunch break. It's in that long and strangely set up liberty station in pt. loma. Parking wasn't hard but the walkways were all blocked and screwy. People compare this place to In n Out and I can see why, but honestly... IN N OUT is crem de la crem or however the heck you spell and say it! Their fries are thick and are comparable to In n Out fries only bigger and thicker. TWSS. I had their regular cheeseburger which I didn't know had 2 pattys at the time which ended up being waaay too many calories for me. It cost me 9 bucks for fries and the burger! Next time I go, I will only order the smaller jr. burger or whatever they call it and it will fill me right up. If more of these pop up in San Diego, I'll definately go more but right now this location is kind of out of the way unless you're near the airport or living in that naval neighborhood in pt. loma. Recommendation: Order the Mini Cheeseburger (It's not small, just comes with one patty) and an order of fries. They hook you up with fries in a cup and overflow alot more into your bag. So, yesterday in the battle with my boyfriend of going to Hodads vs. Five Guys, Five Guys won. Five Guys is definitely worth checking out! I started hearing about it last summer, and am glad that I tried it, although, I really don't understand the comparison with In 'n out? This Five Guys is tucked in Liberty Station just past Vons and before Trader Joe's. There is plenty of parking! Inside the restaurant, packed tables and LOUD music, but you know, the music is great, they played Styx, and our table was in the middle of two tables, and I didn't hear a word of conversation from either. Sometimes it's better that way. There are free peanuts, and the place is plastered with reviews on their walls, most of which seemed to be from several issues of the same publication, "Washingtonian" Does that count? Best advice I could give you if you've never been to a Five Guys, stop thinking it is going to be anything like In 'n out. This place has a few more options, that seem to make everything a tad more complicated. There's two kinds of fries. Cajun & Regular There's many toppings. There is a section of toppings in black writing, which are the more average toppings and sauces, and there are toppings in red writing, that are more unique, like A-1 & BBQ sauce. They also have bacon cheeseburgers. As well as hot dogs. That is the point where I find myself stumbling to figure out what I want. Ordering is NOT as easy as 1, 2, 3. They sure make it tough for picky eaters to order! Ordering tip for couples/groups: The large fries are plentiful. These can easily be shared between 2-3 people. Onto the food: Your order is served to you in a paper bag regardless of dining in or take out. Once you dig in, you will find foil wrapped little burgers and an overflowing cardboard cup of delicious fries. The biggest perk of Five Guys, is the Cajun fries! CAJUN FRIES FTW! The burgers are average looking upon sight. To me, they don't seem any more gormet than a fast food chain, foil wrapper, small sesame bun, compact size. Take a bite, and wow. They are pretty delicious, and deceiving. I had a double patty burger with lettuce, cheese, ketchup, and mustard. Besides the extra patty, no frills. I could hardly finish it! The cheese on these burgers is different, I liked it. But it was texturally different. Be prepared for this. I have heard mixed reviews on the cheese. My boyfriend also commented on the cheese. It's just so, unique. With a 4 star rating, obviously it didn't bother us. The cajun fries that are covered in spices, and a little spicy! You get so many that I couldn't finish those little bites of joy :(! Yes, the ordering is complicated, prices a little high, but you will get FULL! The burgers are good, hot, and fresh. Perfect Sunday afternoon burger stop. We walked off our food down to the gamers garage at Corvette Diner, quite the hike from Five Guys, unless I am unaware of a shortcut. (Sidenote: Love the layout of Liberty Station. It's a former Naval Training Center. It's like a maze, with long covered hallways and arches. It's hard to find some of the restaurants and stores in there, so come here with a little time, it's very beautiful and nice to take a stroll through here.) The point of this review is: Yes, predominant red and white tiles do cover both In 'n out and Five Guys' restaurant interiors, but that really seems to be the only similarity. I grew up in SoCal, and ever since I outgrew Happy Meals, my favorite burger has come from In-N-Out. Oh, the days when I could pound down a 3x3 or a 4x4 with no consequences! So when I heard about this eastern upstart, I was skeptical. But I went in with an open mind, and boy, was my worldview shaken. The place was perhaps three-quarters full on a weekend afternoon. I dispensed with the free peanuts, because I didn't want to get too full. The soda dispenser had all varieties of Coke except for vanilla, so I was able to enjoy a mix of Coke Zero with a splash of Cherry Coke. After about a ten minute wait, with the music blaring classic rock a little too loudly, I was able to get my cheeseburger "all-the-way" with an order of regular fries. Now, stand back, because I'm about to be hit by lightning, but yes, this burger was better than In-N-Out! But it was a different style; rather than being a fast-food burger, this tasted like a burger from a backyard grill. The bun was your standard size, but it was absolutely overstuffed by the ingredients, and smashed down so it had a possibility of fitting in your mouth. It was as if your grillmaster buddy wanted you to try every ingredient and got overly enthusastic about it, loading your burger up right up to the point of bursting. It was DE-LICIOUS. The cheese wasn't melted to the Sublime Goo of a Double-Double, instead going with the classic slice-of-American-cheese style. The beef was solid, and the grilled onions were probably my favorite part, carmelized to juicy perfection. I wouldn't compare a Five Guys burger to In-N-Out. To me, it tasted more like a burger from Rocky's in Pacific Beach, or if Ocean Beach's much larger Hodad's burger had been compressed into a tight cube. The fries had been recommended by a friend. They were pretty good, a fairly meaty cut, but the portion size was huge. I was only able to finish half of my fries. Will I still be going to In-N-Out? Yes, and more often than Five Guys because a burger, fries, and drink there only comes out to about seven bucks, while my Five Guys meal came out to around eleven dollars. It's also a sit-down joint rather than a drive-thru option. I would compare it more to a Red Robin or Ruby's experience, just without a server. Will I make a point to come back? Definitely. Dropping your used peanut casings on the ground is a nice concept, but not if you're the only person in the restaurant doing so. The service is really good, and so is the food. Their burgers are a little shy of my favorite SD burger, but still worthwhile. The fries are outstanding -- eat them first! Real potatoes + real peanut oil = yummy hot fries. I have a love-hate relationship with the Coke machines. I love them for all of the choices -- and I hate them for all of the choices. I really could sit there all afternoon and try the different combos. It's reason enough to get the regular sized dink -- so that you can try more different combos. I ate there yesterday and I ordered the double cheese burger and small fries and regular drink. The service was fast and the employees were super friendly. I ate some peanuts while waiting for my order. I was given a bag with my order in it. I looked expecting to see a big burger but to my surprise it was small. I heard that Five guys is a really popular joint on the east coast (their version of IN-N-OUT) so I had to try it out for myself when I discovered we had a restaurant in San Diego. Personally, I think Five Guys is overrated. I was expecting food on the same league as IN-N-OUT but was sorely disappointed. They squish your burger in a piece of foil and everything comes out to look like a hot mess... It would have recieved one more star if their prices were decent...but it was a total rip off! As an East Coast native, I have had several great Five Guys experiences in my time. Obviously I was excited for the grand opening of this store just ten minutes away from my house. However, it appears as though the employees at this location do not quite understand the Five Guys charm. Don't get me wrong, the food was great. The generous portion of fries is always a nice touch, and the burgers were exactly as I remember them. I think I still like Burger Lounge better, but they are different types of burgers and really cannot be compared. But I simply cannot get over the fact that the employees at this location frown upon patrons throwing peanut shells on the floor! In all honesty, this isn't an upscale burger joint, and that is part of the reason it's so great. So when I arrive at your restaurant for dinner and am famished, every other Five Guys practically begs me to dive into the huge boxes of peanuts situated along the queue. But yesterday, when I began to discard the shells on the floor as per Five Guys policy, an employee literally stood beside me to sweep up the shells as I tossed them on the floor. Upon realizing I insisted on the practice of leaving them on the floor, he brought a me container to hold the shells. I then told him that, as I understood it, Five Guys welcomed this behavior, but he said he found it less than charming and wanted to provide me with another option. After a few more exchanges, it became apparent that he meant no harm by it, but I still did not find this all that comforting. This spot is spacious, clean (no peanut or shell scatterings on the tables or floor) and most importantly staff is friendly. The interior is reminiscent of a Rally's Burgers (the walls are predominantly white and checkered w/red & white tiles). As soon as you walk in you will see a huge box of peanuts that you can eat (for free) while you wait for your order. The menu is basic, regular burgers here have two beef patties and the little burgers have one beef patty plus you have the options of placing your beef patty/patties in a bun, lettuce wrap or a bowl. I ordered a Little Bacon Cheeseburger w/raw jalapeños, grilled onions, pickles, lettuce, mayo & hot sauce wrapped in lettuce. The burger was good and I was so hungry I forgot to take a pic. I have to say that I love the add-ons, which (in addition to the above) incl. ketchup, mustard, raw onions, tomatoes, relish, grilled green bell peppers, grilled mushrooms, A-1 steak sauce & bbq sauce. No onion rings but they do have fries reg. season salted and Cajun. I got Cajun fries, which were good but I think I like the reg fries better. The other foodies in my group got Reg Bacon Cheeseburgers (took a pic of one before it was devoured). I like this location, the employees are super nice and the burgers look and taste good. I was extremely disappointed with the french fries. They were NOT crispy at all. They were soggy. They use peanut oil here which should allow them to fry at a hotter temperature which makes the fries crispier. But alas, they were disappointing. Its pretty awful that they do not serve things on trays. They stuff everything into a brown paper bag. They should be kind to the environment and serve food on trays when dining in. So, I don't get the hype. There were probably 8-10 people ahead of us when we arrived for lunch. It was 12:30, so the main lunch rush should have already ordered. After about 10 minutes in line, my order was placed and we all found a table. It took 21 minutes for my order to be ready. There's just no reason for that. It's lunchtime - you know people are coming and have limited time at lunch. Yes, there were peanuts to occupy the time, and silence the stomach growls, but I didn't come for peanuts! When we got our food, I was underwhelmed. I unwrapped my aluminum foil and found a smashed up bun inside. The burger was cooked fine, but there just wasn't anything amazing about it. The fries, likewise, were cooked fine but nothing compelled me to keep eating them. I felt like I was in a knock off In-N-Out, and In-N-Out is cheaper. After all the hype, a few friends and I made the trip down to Point Loma to try Five Guys Burgers and Fries. The food was good, though not amazing for the price. To be honest, the taste kind of reminded me of what burgers taste like when you barbeque them at a tailgate--pretty darn good, a bit messy, and you pick the toppings. They do offer like 20+ kinds of toppings to put on your burger, but this doesn't really accentuate the taste of the burger itself--it makes you think that you just put a lot of stuff on top of your burger. The fries are definitely good (got the cajun fries) and they give you a lot of em! Honestly though--probably would not make the 15 minute drive to go here. I agree with other reviews that 3.5 stars would be better. My SD greasy burger joint rankings: 1. Smash Burger 2. Five Guys 3. Fuddruckers 4. Hodads (delicious but I have gotten sick after eating here every single time) 5. Fat Burger. I put In-n-Out into the fast food category, not burger joint. Apples and oranges (though In-n-Out is at the top of the fast food burgers by a long shot) and they satisfy different cravings. I personally think that the best burger in SD can be had at The Neighborhood, but again, totally different category. The fries are awesome. A good burger is only half a meal if the fried goodies accompanying it are mediocre.. (well there are probably a few exceptions).. For this reason, I place Five Guys over in n out. Also tipping the scales is a matter of personal preference.. preferring a meatier burger. That said.. complementary grilled onions and mushrooms? Hell yeah! Another issue that I've seen complained about is that a Five Guys burger is more expensive than an In n out one.. I wonder why..? More burger perhaps? No.. you don't say.. hmm... Boyfriend as we were driving around Point Loma- "If we don't go here, it'll be like you driving up to the outside of Disneyland, but not going in!" uhhhh, not even. I had heard SO MUCH about this place. So many awards, articles, reviews, yadda yadda. And one day, while in Point Loma, my boyfriend just HAD to go and try it. Why not? If so many people publicly love it, then it's probably delicious. We strolled in 5 minutes before they closed, and they were super nice about it (sorry employees! I did sincerely feel bad). I ordered a little cheeseburger (4 bucks) and my boyfriend ordered a burger with fries. The cool thing about their burgers is that they give you a nice amount of fixins to put on your burger. It took quite a long time for our burgers to get finished (think Fudrucker's), which I was surprised with because I thought this place was fast food. So I take a bite of my burger. REALLY? That's IT? It wasn't even that amazing! Definitely not as good as In and Out. Or even Fudruckers for that matter. I felt like my burger was just really bland. And the bread to meat ratio was way too high for the little cheeseburger. I also tried the fries, which I didn't care for either. They literally just tasted like straight up potatoes. Maybe they are going for the really natural taste? I saved some food for the next day and reheated it for lunch and FORTUNATELY it tasted better than the night it was made. But overall, I just really wasn't impressed. In and out is way better (and cheaper!) and I can't believe people would even compare the two, because they are in different price ranges, take different amount of times to make, and are different sizes). I've gone here a few times and I've always had a good experience here. The staff is always friendly and the place is typically clean (I'm negating the fact that people tend to throw their peanut shells on the floor at times). I came here today for lunch and this time I barely beat the lunch crowd. I ordered fries and the mini cheese burger with grilled onions, grilled green peppers, grilled mushrooms, tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, and BBQ sauce. The bun was nice and warm, the grilled vegetables came out nice, and the other ingredients came out really fresh. I was even impressed that the ground beef patty came tasting fresh, juicy, and well cooked, but the meat lacked a little bit of seasoning. The balance of ingredients on the burger was great. Every bite had all the ingredients. The fresh cut fries were tasty and well cooked, but I wish they were crispier on the outside. Overall, this is a great place to go for a custom burger that doesn't charge extra for the additional toppings on your burger. The quality of food and service is great as well. I know this is a really popular chain on the east coast, but for me it's not something that I crave. Even though it's not something that I'll have to have, I'll be back again if I want a good burger with custom toppings. read more

I love these guys. I order online from work (I work within walking distance to this location) and whenever I come in, they loudly welcome me by name and everyone stops to give a quick wave. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. They don't make your fries until you go in to pick up the burger, so they're always hot and delicious and fresh. Did I mention they're delicious? Plus, they give you so much extra, you have an extra serving at the bottom of your bag. Mmmm. They are hands down the best burger I've ever eaten in the United States. I was at Liberty station the other day, and I don't often find myself in that area so I decided that for research purposes, I had to find out first hand if Five Guys was as overrated as everyone says it is. Well... it is. The burger is not bad.. but there was nothing about it that makes me particularly want to come back for another. Sure there are a lot of toppings and the burger is a good size, but... well, I really could have made the same burger at home for a fraction of the price. And the bun was all soggy... the many choices for toppings were nice, but it stilll didn't do much to me and I actually felt like my burger just had too much going on yet wasn't very exciting at the same time. The fries come in generous portions are pretty good... but I'm not much of a fries person these days, and good fries isn't enough to get me to come back. Bummer. For the price and quality (and convienience) I would definitely prefer Burger Lounge or, yes, In n Out but judging by the overwhelming comments I got on FB of a picture I posted while I was here ("Mobile Uploads" of course, yeah I did that.. haha) this place has indeed got a lot of hype around it. Five Guys is..... alrighhhht. Don't know what all the hype was about; I heard about how great it was ever since it started popping up in OC. It's much too expensive for what you get, which is a burger that tastes like my buddy just took it off the grill during a summer picnic or bonfire at the beach. It's good, but its not a taste I'd particularly pay that much for unless I was really craving that taste for some reason. Fries are whatever also and not too memorable. I still prefer In N Out. All the magazine reviews/awards are simply hype. They obviously don't know what a good burger is. Their fries are better than their burgers but that isn't saying much. I had the Cajun fries and they still lacked flavor. I would say that a Five Guys burger is comparable to that of cafeteria food at best. When you attempt to look like In-N-Out, it only makes sense for me to compare you to In-N-Out. So with that said please understand that this review is pretty much comparing Five Guys to In-N-Out. I think the food is terrible. Burgers were sloppy, soggy, and gross. It's cool that they have a bunch of toppings... but when the burger becomes ridiculous to handle, what's the point? Also the meat was way over cooked. I also was not a fan of the Cajun fries, way over seasoned (But I suppose that is how Cajun fries are supposed to be). On a positive note, they do give you a crap load of the fries. Their smaller size is all you would most likely need, ever to share. Too bad between the 5 different guys they couldn't figure out it was overpriced. When I pay 12.15 for a bacon cheeseburger, fry, and a large soda it should knock my socks off. It didn't. I doubt rethinking any combination of extras will help. For that kind of money I'm going to go relax with a bacon cheeseburger and fries in the bar area of Chili's. At least my 12 and change will include air-conditioning, a ball game and a burger with a decent sized patty. All in all, there are much better takeout places in San Diego for a burger. When I drove by Liberty Station a few months ago and saw the Five Guys sign the first thing I thought was, "HEY! That's the place that President Obama went to buy lunch for the office during the taping of the White House visit! I HAVE to eat there!" Months later, I still hadn't eaten there. My favorite person had lunch with some friends there the other day and said I HAD to try it. So the other night, in trying to figure out what to have for dinner, we decided on Five Guys. I ordered online for pickup after work and he picked it up on the way home. This place is simple: Burgers. Dogs. Veggie burgers. Fries. Drinks. And all the toppings you can think of. I ordered a 'little' bacon cheeseburger with BBQ sauce and grilled onions. The 'little' burgers have single beef patty, the regular burgers are two patties. A large order of fries will feed three people, easy. My burger was awesome. As good as In-N-Out, in my opinion, but totally different. The burger was heavy, I couldn't believe it was the 'little' burger. The bun was dense and spongy and the beef patty was juicy. It was a tasty, tasty burger my friends. The fries were kind of cold by the time we ate them. I imaging they're tastier when they're fresh, but they were still good--more of a thick cut fry than other fast food establishments. Whoa, folks. These yelp reviews on the best SD burger mirrors the spirit of the West-Cost, East-Coast 90's rap war. You'll love this place if you like a lot of topping options and don't mind eating a burger that looks like a hot mess. It's super sloppy and comes to your table looking like it's been sat on; but in a good way. I promise. I don't mind getting my hands dirty, so I dug in and was presently surprised. I went for the works, or "all the way." It was delish. Beware of the 'little' burger. There is nothing little about it. The fries were crispy, not greasy, and seem to come in five pound orders. We split a large between four people. I'd go to the Point Loma location over PB any day. There's plenty of parking and it's in a quiet shopping center. I'd go on an off-hour also. I'd heard an awful lot of opinions about Five Guys, and being from California, just never bothered to try it because In-N-Out is a cheaper and delicious option. But today, I gave in. The smell upon entering the restaurant is overwhelming delicious, so they get points for that. I generally have a difficult time making decisions, so I also appreciated the limited menu choices. The food itself is rather good, but seems a bit pricey for just a hamburger. However, the fries are totally worth it. My boyfriend and I split a regular sized order of the Cajun fries and couldn't finish them between us. The cup they use to measure the fries was overflowing to the point that the entire bottom of our bag was also full of fries, and we definitely weren't complaining. They were wonderful. If i want a burger, this is my place! Good, wholesome, freshly cooked burgers with home made, properly blanched french fries. I recommend the cajun style fries if you like a little spice to heat things up and appreciate the fresh jalepeno's, vice canned, on my burger when requested. They have peanuts available while you wait that keeps my 3 year old son busy while we wait for our food. The only reason I give 4 stars instead of 5 is the price. An average meal with fries and a drink will cost you $10-$12. In comparison to other burger joints, this is a little high. Considering the quality of burger you are getting and you can easily stomach the price along with the food! read more
