After being a staunch supporter of INO I finally decided to give 5 Guys a try. I think the thing that struck me most was the stark contrast between the two. Comparing one to the other was not unlike comparing apples to oranges, instead of apples to apples. 5 Guys is definitely more expensive lets get that out of the way right up front. As others have mentioned they do not offer combo meals so everything is ala carte. Where INO's fries are more along the lines of a fast food fry, 5 Guys offers something more like a steak fry (albeit a little greasy and somewhat bland if you don't get the cajun fries). The hamburger while being a little fatter, is definitely NOT enormous and is basically the same size as one from INO. I will admit it did taste different (not necessarily better) and the variety of toppings offered was a pleasant option. If I had to make a comparison I would be more likely to compare 5 Guys to Mojo burger than to INO, and in that scenario I would opt for Mojo burger. For the same price there I would be treated to a full meal including drink as well as grass fed Angus beef. Overall the food was good, but not overly impressive. It was definitely expensive, and to me, not worth the price. My bottom line is I am still a fan of INO and will frequent them since I like the price point. If I want a more upscale burger I will venture over to Mojo Burger and pay a little more for something that warrants charging a higher price. read more

Overpriced and overrated. The only cool thing about my Five Guys experience was creating my own custom burger from the giant list of toppings. The burger looked like it could have come from my backyard barbecue (Costco buns), which may have raised my expectations a bit. Unfortunately the patty had so little flavor that I briefly wondered if they cut their meat with sawdust or something. They use American cheese - the most pointless cheese ever invented. I placed my order online. I waited about 1 hour, the restaurant was not busy. I walk in and a guy runs from behind me and jumps in front to talk to the guys passing out the completed orders. I told him I was here this guy jump In front of me. I told him my name. He grabs a bag and says nothing to me. But he filled the other guys bags and still says nothing to me. He hands the guy his order and still never said anything to me regarding my order. I ask the guy again if there is an update on my order. He points at the bag. Says nothing. I then speak to the manager. At this point I don't know what is going on. The manager says he will talk to him. The manager pulls the guy off the floor to speak to him. Another cool walks over looks in the bag the guy pointed at scoops fries into my bag then hands it to me. At this point I am like what in the hell... I ask the guy "So the whole time my bag was sitting there and all he had to do was add fries?" Ok so... I gave them two stars because he wanted to make sure I had fresh fries. read more

I was pretty hyped up to visit Five Guys. My brother-in-law raves about the place and plenty of other people have said great things about the food. To be honest, I'm not much of a fast food guy. Subway occasionally and maybe Rubios or Chipotle, but nothing like McDonalds or Burger King or even In-N-Out. When we showed up at Five Guys, the place was packed. The layout reminded me a bit of Jeffrey's minus the condiment bar. The prices are somewhere between In-N-Out and the Counter. I order a burger with everything except mayo. This included lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, ketchup, mustard, mushrooms, etc. I also got a small order of cajun fries. The burger was pretty much a disaster: two thin patties, standard white bun, and a bunch of mess which was all the veggies and sauce. The moment I started eating it, the whole thing fell apart in my hands. It didn't really taste like anything except for ketchup. I would've been hard pressed to identify anything else in the wet, orange mess that was rapidly disintegrating onto the table. The fries were pretty damn good: crisp, hot, and a nice dusting of spicy cajun seasoning. Five Guys is fast food. It's nowhere near the caliber of the Counter or Jeffrey's or Burger Lounge. It's slightly above McDonalds (the last time I had a hamburger at McD's was in 1988) and well below In-N-Out. They could really benefit from moving the toppings over to a condiment bar, grilling the bun (to help keep the burger intact), and maybe having one well-formed patty instead of two loosely packed patties. read more

Stopped by Five Guys Burgers for the very first time at about 3pm on October 21, in the afternoon for a late lunch...+ i wanted to see what all the "hype" was all about.. First impression ? For someone who doesn't eat out often... Burgers here are a tad on the expensive side! Two guys and a girl are working behind the counter that day.. um..I thought it was 5 guys running a burger joint. ? After all the place is called "Five Guys"...instead of 2 guys and a girl working there...Just kidding ! The girl working behind the counter who took my order could have been "a bit more friendly"..and could have been more customer service oriented...especially since I explained to her that "It's my first time here"....but no such luck. I even got a weird look from her when I asked her "What's the difference in size for medium and large Fries"...She just kind of gave me this annoyed look which basically says "who cares... just order already"...Um ok then ! I'm sure people get tired in the mid-afternoon / late afternoon at any job..but first impression's always stay with customers since you never know who you will meet especially in the "customer service/food" job. The guys working with the girl who took my order were much more customer service oriented, proactive and friendly. They went out of their way to make a first time customer feel important.. They explained their Burger toppings and even promoted their Cajun Fries seasoning and why it's a "Five Guys Favorite"... I actually appreciated that. I'd rather get a burger from In-N-Out. The best part about Five Guys is the unlimited peanuts you can get. Also, you can customize your burger just the way you like it. I usually get all the ingredients, but it almost always takes away the flavor of the meat. Five guys blows In and Out, totally and completely out of the water. Burgers: way better...thicker, juicy, and yes, even well seasoned! They are also imperfectly shaped (read: hand-formed) and the edges get nice and crisped up. I don't know what they do to get the burgers so juicy since they are well done, but trust me, it happens. This is the kind of burger that is smashed up a bit before you open the wrapper, and that's a good thing! Also, the fries KILL the ones at in and out.... I like them a little crispier though so I ask them for well done and they have no problem doing it. Expensive? Came here on a Friday night and this place was packed so we immediately decided to order our burgers to go. There has been so much hype about Five Guys and I have no idea where it came from. Let's talk about the burger. It's nothing special although they offer plenty of choices to go along with it. If you enjoy a simple burger I would drive a little further down Blossom Hill and go to In-N-Out instead. The meat is juicy and bigger than usual but the buns appear like they are straight from Costco. yikes! Now on to the cajun fries: I was really excited to try this as it's unique and not many fast food places offer cajun fries. I was extremely disappointed as well. They drowned it with the seasoning to the point where you can't even taste the potatoes anymore. When I opened the bag the spices were way too overwhelming. Tried the Almaden Expwy location after hearing the hype. Ordered the cheeseburger with lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled mushrooms and mustard; regular fries and large soda. Burger was OK tasting- not great, not terrible but it was soggy. I was surprised at how soggy and falling-apart it was. The regular burger comes with 2 meat patties. Maybe the "little hamburger" comes with only one patty, which I prefer. I like the ingredients in proper proportion and the 2 meat patties threw it off. I didn't notice the mushrooms at first and thought they'd missed them. I found them on top of the bottom bun...about 6 slices...which is just about 1 mushroom. I would have preferred more mushrooms so I could have tasted them. The fries were terrible. They were a soggy, greasy mess. I like fries that are firm and a bit crispy. If I didn't know better I'd guess that 5 guys somehow managed to deep fry strips of grease. The bag was greasy, the napkins were greasy; they were really bad. I tried a few and tossed the rest. If a friend insists on trying it I'd skip the fries and eat the free peanuts. The place was packed and very noisy. Someone likes the food. The burger, fries and soda cost about $11.50 so I don't see this as bargain priced food. That's about twice the price of In-N-Out and In-N-Out has better tasting food. Five Guys will always be an enigma to me. On one hand, the burgers are decent and you have a great number of customizing condiments. Their cajun fries are also pretty awesome. However, I just can't get over the fact that the pricing seems to outweigh the quality of the food. For around 10 bucks I can get one bacon cheeseburger, fries, and a drink. For the same amount at In n Out I can get more like two double doubles, fries, and a drink. Granted you can argue Five Guys has a better quality of burger, but IMO, the marginal increase in quality isn't worth the price increase. If the burgers were closer to The Counter's quality, I would be more inclined to think favorably on the pricing but I think if I were to choose between Five Guys and In n Out now, I think I would choose In n Out. Maybe I haven't found the perfect burger/condiment style that will leave me speechless...or maybe I had my expectations too high because of the hype....Nevertheless, I will probably drop by again since this is close to work and try a different combination. read more

For the amount rush with about 20 of us coming in from the airport they handled customer service pretty well. It didn't take long at all to get our orders and freshly make them. The hamburgers were nice and juicy with French fries and the seasoning to top it off was great. I have been in search of the best hamburger spot in the San Jose area since arriving here two years ago. I think my disappoint with Five Guys lies in the fact that I was told that this is the best burger joint in town. I was grossly misinformed. Since it's all about the hamburger I will say this, it had all the accoutrements that make up what should have been a great burger. Sadly it wasn't and here's why. The patty had no flavor, maybe that's why they offer so many sauces (non of which I tried as I am a purest and enjoy my burger with the holy trinity, mustard, ketchup and mayo). Second fail was the bun. To achieve the perfect buger, the bun, is just as important as the patty. To have a perfect bun you need the height to be comparable to the width (you don't want the bun to overpower all the delicious fillings). The bun should be very lightly buttered and cooked on the flat top just long enough to crisp up the sides. My bun at Five Guys wasn't cooked and it fall apart into a doughy mess half way through. The service was not exceptional enough to warrant a second try. The fries tasted like oven baked fries, which I hate. Overall, this was my first and last visit. My search for the best burger in San Jose continues. Until then I shall dream of the grass fed banh mi burger at Bachi Burger in Vegas and contemplate why I ever left. read more

Comparing In-N-Out: 5 guys burgers are good but are very expensive almost double the price of In-N-Out. Unfortunately, 5 guys burgers are not that great! Their fries are terrible soggy bottom fries in the cup with a weird peanut oil taste - my kids didn't like the fries at all! In-N-Out have great burgers especially double double animal style! Came here to have lunch with a friend the other day. Got the smaller bacon cheeseburger and small fries. Bacon cheeseburger was all right - nothing to write home about. I think the bacon cheeseburger I had at McDonald's in Sweden was tastier. It probably cost the same amount. Fries were under seasoned and undercooked. *barfs* Nothing worse than undercooked fries. Fantastic burgers. Fries fried in real peanut oil - so they taste like fries! Do yourself a favor and get a regular (double) cheeseburger "all the way!" The combo of flavors and textures is fantastic! Plus they have real sweetened, green or reg iced tea! When eating by myself I don't get the fries... Whenever I'm craving a burger Five Guys is always the place to go! All the food is always very fresh and leaves a good taste in your mouth. The employees are very nice and the restaurant is kept very clean and well stocked. The menu is very simple: Choose a regular or double burger and choose your own toppings, add fries, and a drink. I really like the fries here (better than In and Out), you can get them in a regular or large. The regular is plenty for two people. There are two types of fries, Regular (salted) and Cajun (seasoned). The "little" burger is basically a single patty, but it is about the size of a double-double. After hearing some excited talk about this place, we had pleasant anticipation for our first visit. The counter help are fun and friendly and the joint is bright and clean. They give you free roasted peanuts to eat while you wait for your food. And the beverages have free refills. After that, it's a bit of a let down. The burgers came on very cheap bread; the meat was a bit dry. The cheese in the cheese burger was not at all melted and it was American cheese, so that's not good. The fries looked golden, but they were not very crispy and really didn't deliver on flavor. So, at least for now this is yet another place with over cooked burgers and undercooked fries. But, I believe it's a brand new place, so maybe it just needs a little time to break in and get it's feet under it. read more

This is a new restaurant in our area, so I wanted to try it. I took my elderly uncle with me for a night out! My first thought looking at the menu was that they seemed a little pricey. Then, when we got up to order, the girl taking our order mentioned that their regular burgers are all DOUBLES! That the LITTLE burgers are really regular ones with one pattie. SO, that made a huge difference in what we ordered, and in the price! When we ordered the large fries to share, again, the girl mentioned that a regular size would be plenty for the 2 of us, that the large size feeds about 4 people! I just thought it was wonderful that she didn't allow us to over order, and over pay! The WAIT: not long at all, even as busy as they were. I counted 13 workers behind the counter, and there had to be more behind the doors...so, they had it down to a science, getting the orders prepared and served quickly. The FOOD: Fabulous!!!!! Apart from being able to get mushrooms and carmelized onions on your burger, this place is still a dirty burger joint. The burgers are not as good as In/Out and they have copied their mantra of 'simple menu' AKA burger, cheesburger, fries, soda. The people were really nice here that took my order, and I was suprised that a 'cheeseburger' actually comes with two patties (a tribute to fat America ). I did not like that they don't have a meal deal. So if you want a burger, fries, and a coke you have have pay $11.50 Definitely a good place to go with a friend and split everything, but not the best burger. ***Also side note, having a quote that says 'voted best french fries' in MONTANA on the drink cups does not bode well for somebody living in California read more

I decided to try this place after one of my friends claimed that its better than in-n-out. Of course I scoffed and said, "yeah right!" But this is my review: This place really has authentic tasting burgers. They taste very homemade which is the reason I keep coming back to this joint (compared to in-n-out). Its located right next to wingstop, so this area gets very busy around dinner time. Their fries are also salty and delicious. I'm so, so, torn between loving and hating this place, but if I had to choose a side, it would be Team 5 Guys. I love the choice of toppings they offer (especially the grilled onions, mushrooms, and jalapenos - YUM!), and I personally like their fries better than other places. The biggest turnoff for me, though, is the price - they don't sell combo style meals, so a burger, fries, and soda can get pretty pricey. They don't make milkshakes, either. I like to order a classic plain cheeseburger with fries and coke. Their burgers are always made right when you order. I've tried Five Guys twice. Sorry, but I can't understand all of the hype about Five Guys. If you like your burger well done, maybe it's a good burger. If you like your burger cooked any less than well done, this isn't the place for you. I thought the fries were ok. I'm a medium rare kind of guy. In n Out will make my burger any way I want. Why not Five Guys? I ordered my cheeseburger with jalapenos, which were greener than St. Paddy's day and as sweet as a yellow bell pepper. No heat at all. Truly a topping for the timid. Do yourself a favor. A mile and a half up Blossom Hill is the Burger Pit. You'll save a few bucks and get a burger cooked the way you like it. Real jalapenos, too. read more
