I have been going to this location for several months at least once per week. Recently the air conditioning system has been broke often and during this crazy hot summer customers and employees need a place to stay cool and enjoy a burger and fries. Not anymore as of today. Very busy place whenever we drove by, so it took me a while before I got to visit, but it was worth the wait! Got to love a place that has a box of peanuts to pour in a tray and munch on while you wait to order and then wait for the order afterwards. I like the whole thing about having the bags of potatoes making the wall for the line; kind of gets you immersed in the food so to speak. We were trying to decide what to put on our burgers (since the menu's easy to figure otherwise) and the couple in front recommended that we only get regular fries, as there's plenty in just one order. How right they were! A cup in the bag with fries overflowing was more than enough for us. and I ordered "just" a bacon cheeseburger and found out what a big thing it was! A double burger actually and stacked tall - it was great tasting with the A1, mayo and veggies I asked to have on it. I liked the way you are able to (if you can find room among others waiting of already dining) see your food called up and cooked before your eyes on the grill, like they aren't ashamed of it (ahem, McD's?). No spitters will be had in this place, ha ha! Definitely a fan of this place and have been back since the first time; burger was great each time, though I'll still take In N Out over them. If based on food quality and taste alone I'd give their burgers and fries a 4. Nice choice of toppings and condiments like A1 or BBQ sauce. Fries are pretty good but not the best I've had. Peanuts are also a nice touch. Figuring in value, no not only price but what that price gets you, drops them to a 2. The regular burger, which is a double burger ( I'm guessing total of 1/2 pound) with bacon and cheese is $8.19. That's for a BURGER! Small fries about $2.20 and small drink $2.29. So, including tax thats $13.75 for a burger lunch that comes in a brown paper bag, which brings me to my other problem with this place. Every order, including "dine" in comes in a paper bag, which you carry to your table then empty then throw away in a few minutes. What a waste! read more

The burger is good... but by the time I got a burger frys and a drink it came to $12. I ordered the small frys which was way too much to eat. It reminds me a little of fatburger. Good food but over priced. I'll stick with In-n-Out. So I have heard so much about this place and how amazing it is. So I had to experience it for myself. The burgers are great and I love that you can add extras like mushrooms and onions and make your hamburger custom. But the price for a cheeseburger is very expensive. Then the fries are the WOREST! Finally found my way to Five Guys. Now let me tell you, there is no burger chain that can make a better burger than I can make for myself, not even close. I look at chain burgers as its own food group, much like NY and Chicago Pizza are two food groups, and Sammy's and CPK are a totally different third pizza food group. I judge them accordingly, apples to apples. I like In-N-Out but don't love it. Sorry California folks but I didn't grow up with it so it doesn't have that magic for me. That makes the In-N-Out/Five Guys debate easy for me. Five Guys wins. I just had the regular hamburger and fries, the true test for a burger joint just like the cheese pizza is the test for a pizza joint. It was good. I wasn't jumping up and down, but it was good. I was more excited about walking a few stores down to Sam's Cigars Vera Cruz. I like the grease in the paper bag. I like that they don't overload the fries with salt like Islands does (talk about ass). I like that they offer malt vinegar. I like that they offer additional toppings, though I did not partake. So, until my next burger, which will probably be awhile, I think Five Guys holds the edge in this intense burger argument and debate within the greasy, fast food, sloppy, I need a 1500 calorie meal, burger food group. I should add that I don't get the peanuts. Bars use free peanuts to create impulsive munching, a thirst-creating giveaway. Are they trying to get me to drink more Diet Sprite? Are you kidding me ? How did this chain get so many good reviews? First complain, when they cooked my burger the guy on the griddle pushed his spatula down hard on the patty numerous times for, i guess, to make it cook faster ? Nincompoop.....you're pushing all the juices out of it !!! When i did receive the burger my fears were confirmed, the patty was as dry as a haystack. Next complain and this was the one that irked me the most....i paid almost $16.- for a Cheeseburger, small fries and a small drink and you guys have the chutzpah to top it with processed cheese ? Well, actually it's not even 100% cheese , just a fraction of cheese is an ingredient in this chemical slice of disgust. If your staff doesn't have the skills of working with Cheddar, Swiss, Mozzarella or other REAL cheeses and doesn't know how to prevent cheese turning into a lumpy, molten protein gel they shouldn't be behind the grill. But then again, look what happened to my patty. Third, the bun itself was very dry and if it wouldn't have been for the toppings that were naturally moist (tomatoes, lettuce, onions...) the whole burger would have been something to forget. Not really sure what the big fuss is about this place. Went there on 5/21 on my way to work and had a burger, fries and a drink. Pricing is reasonable. The burger was good, not great. The fries were quality, but didn't wow me, either. I can see how some people really like them because they are a good cut of potato that is double fried. They reminded me of fries from the Great Steak Escape or one of those mall food court places, though. Not bad, but I still prefer In-N-Out. read more

Yum! The burgers are delicious, and I love all of the free toppings. Especially the A1 sauce--soo good with grilled onions. The cajun fries are amazing as well, and the portions are HUGE. Drawbacks--it's kind of pricey for "fast food" type, and it's super crowded and can sometimes take awhile to get your order. And I've found that if you pick it up and take it back to work, the bread gets kind of soggy and the burger gets smooshy so try and eat it on location if you can. Oh. I've grown up to the likes of In-n-out, double doubles were and usually are my thing whenever I'm in the mood for a good burger. I wanted to try something new, and since we were in the San Marcos area I decided to give this place a whirl. My husband and I walked in, like hungry hungry hippos waiting to feast. I was greeted by a friendly guy waiting to take our order, he was very helpful in answering some questions.. I looked at the prices and already grew weary, maybe the burgers are just that good. You get to pick your own toppings, and decipher between cajun or regular fries, I went bold and chose cajun. As I ordered a single burger with toppings, hubs ordered the double, and at a total of 2 meals we wound up with a 23 dollar bill. HOLY CRAP. I don't pay that much at In-n-out with my son involved, with burger, and milkshake, ordering animal style for me and the old man. Once we sat down and got our meals we realized we were bombarded with extra cajun fries. When I took a bite it tasted like I was at a friends BBQ. The cajun fries were on point, not super greasy and full of flavor. Over all I would say it was tasty, but nothing special in regards to the burger itself. I did enjoy the fries. I am a burger fanatic and five guys is one of my absolute favs.. unfortunately the one in San Marcos where I live has lost its luster. There used to be a really cute NICE guy that worked there but I haven't seen him in a few weeks. Unfortunately for this location, when he left so did the quality of the food. I now prefer in n out up the street or am forced to drive to Escondido for the five guys quality that I've grown accustomed to. Wherever you are cute guy... COME BACK! Update!! Pretty standard Five Guys. I always get excited for the Fries here, gotta love that double scoop! But still not impressed by any of the other food. I don't eat burgers often but sometimes I get a craving, and I had heard so many things about this place so gave it a try. I ordered a regular cheese burger and cajun fries. They shouted my number (is that one of their things??) even though I was 5 feet away. I picked up my paper bag and took it outside. They literally dumped all the fries on top of the burger so I had to dig through them to get to it, getting a ton of cajun spices on my hands. Huge mess. The burger was tasty, but the cheese was not melted at all. I mean it was still cold from the fridge. Maybe that's a thing here too. The cajun fries had way too much seasoning and were so salty I could only eat a few of them. I think If I gave them another try I'd order the regular fries and request that the cheese be even a little bit melted. read more

Everyone is making the In-&-Out comparison. I really feel that's not the best idea. Here is why. At In&Out you can get a burger, fries, and coke for about 5 bucks. At 5 guys, you get that for around 10. Twice as expensive! That being said, I loved my bacon cheese burger, with bbq sauce. The quality of the ingredients appeared to be higher than In&Out. I feel that this is more of a restaurant style burger in a fast food environment. The fries are decent. Love the free peanuts while you wait. I will probably come here when I'm in a hurry for a quick burger and not concerned with dropping 10 bucks on lunch. read more

Reviewing the hot dog I ordered today. It was crazy good I love their burgers but this dog got the spot light of the review. It had bacon, cheddar cheese, an all beef dog, mushrooms, jalapeño, A1 sauce, relish, onion. So good. No heart burn after which was a surprise. Lol. Cajun fries little order was perfect & they provide vinegar. Soda machines are unique! I've brought a few newbie burger people here and now they are hooked. Also I like the employees they are some of the friendliest burger producers in the county. Big buildup because I'd heard great things. Five Guys San Marcos wasn't *AWFUL*, but it wasn't great. And it certainly isn't something I'd ever pay that much for ever again. Meat was overcooked resulting in flavorless blobs. Burger toppings were ok, but not super-great, bun was forgettable. Good bacon. Yucky processed american cheese. OK, first off - don't bother with the fries here. They are limp and greasy (at least at this location) and although they give you plenty of extra, they aren't the best by any stretch. Now on to the burgers. By skipping the fries, you can get a double. Do it. The burgers here are great. Good beef cooked properly and not needing a lot of toppings or extra, although they offer a bunch of selections. Keep it simple is the best way here. One warning. It is ALWAYS crowded here. I went to get lunch today with J at this place. Been hearing about this place from different people for quite a while, and J and I decided to give it a try. We walked in, and the atmosphere was somewhat like In-N-Out. White and red. Complimentary roasted peanuts were pretty good. We ordered the cheeseburger - and there are 8 toppings to choose from - grilled onions, mushrooms, ketchup, mayo, mustard, pickles, and two other that I can't remember. Burgers are pretty good - they are served with two patties. Like a double-double. They are huge and messy to eat. Their french fries are good. Personally, I like their fries better than In-N-Out. I guess we came in at the right time where there are not a lot of people (1:00pm) and we were served with food in the right consistency and cooked well. Burger wise, I think it's pretty average. I'm not very particular with burger tastes, and I am very easy to please with food. It looked crowded behind the counter, though, with 7-8 people going back and forth working on the orders. I didn't see a drive thru, but they have online ordering service to skip the lines. $20 for two cheese burgers, a large fries (container as big as a regular fountain drink cup) and a regular drink. Ok first off, yes there are peanuts all over. It's their thing. My kids love it. Heck, I love it. Overload.) and a fun atmosphere. Often when we go here, one of the grill cooks sings along with the radio. Loudly and with good humor (and not bad singing voice). The hamburgers are really good. Tasty, great fixings, char goodness. The fries are skin on, and fresh. And they provide them in abundance. This is my favorite thing about 5 guys - it's a fry party and you're invited! Stopped with my wife for lunch after shopping at Sprouts next door. We used to frequent a location in Mission Viejo years ago and it was pretty good. This location was terrible. The service was good but the prices are high, $9.00 for a fast food burger? The mushrooms and onions were practically raw not grilled very long. The buns were very plain. No toasting or grilling and the meat was not crispy or charred on the outside at all so pretty much under cooked. The fries were very dark but limp and soggy, full of oil, gross! After years, we thought we would treat ourselves to a burger and this is what we got. I may be out of touch with the pricing but, never again. read more

Tried 5 guys with low expectations bc heard it was overrated. I get innout regularly & was craving better fries. Grilled cheese veggie was only $3 so I tried also.. Pleasantly surprised! The fries were 100x better than innout.. I can't wait to try the cajun fries!!!! Sandwich was good, a bigger fancier version of an innout animal style grilled cheese. Don't worry... I love innout & will still be a regular, especially in the late evening hours! SOO BUMMED they don't serve milkshakes!!!! This location is lucky because it is in such close proximity to menchies froyo.. and not super far from a few other shake spots. We follow the philosophy of focusing on a few items, and serving them to the best of our ability. I really like going here for lunch. But, wow, I am surprised and a little disappointed to see that they don't have at least 5 stars. I have eaten hear a handful of times on my lunch breaks from Palomar College. I cannot always resist the grill smoke wafting across my hungry nostrils as I approach Henry's (Sprouts) for a (healthier) deli sandwich. d'OH! First of all, the burger has great flavor and doesn't seem like the factory stamped out burger patties. It's great how you can easily customize your burger with a good variety of fixings and sauces. I always order the "Little Bacon Cheeseburger" with BBQ sauce and grilled mushrooms. Next time I should ask them to grill the onions more, since they still seemed too raw/crunchy to my taste. That is my ultimate burger and I see no need to venture with any other combination. I wish they had a drive-thru because they would kick I&O's bland behinds!
