We were so excited to try Five Loaves Cafe as we are new to the area and have heard good things. We went about 2:00 on a Saturday and unfortunately they only had a brunch menu, which we did not expect on a Saturday. Since it was later in the day and we had already had breakfast, we did not want that again. There were a couple of sandwich and salad options but not really many choices. My husband got the Ham & Brie sandwich on sourdough and I got the Cobb Salad. The bread on the sandwich was very dry and tasteless. My husband is not a picky eater but did not enjoy the sandwich at all. I ordered the salad due to lack of other options, thinking I could not go wrong with a salad. There was very little chicken on the salad and it was nothing special. Neither of us ate much of our meals and were disappointed. The place was cute, the service was good however the metal chairs were pretty uncomfortable. Kudos for the gluten free options on the menu. Tried to eat here based on my daughter's glowing recommendation. Stopped through while traveling and staying nearby. Had our dog with us. Got an outside table around 7:15p on Wednesday, only one other couple outside. Hostess greeted us promptly and made the table ready. Well, that was the last we spoke to anyone! Saw a waitress twice come out to give the check and complete the payment with the one other couple outside. She never acknowledged us in any way. No "be right over", not a word. So after 25 minutes of entertaining the dog we decided this wouldn't work for us! I was really feeling salad as I had a heavier breakfast, and was just out in the sun, but had also worked up and appetite. I thought it was so cool, I could have two half salads to make up one, and then I added protein to one and boom!!! A full meal! I ordered the half Eggplant Fritters salad - Artisan Greens, grilled asparagus & goat cheese And half Arugula Salad - Goat cheese, roasted beats, candied walnuts & carrots but added the North Atlantic Salmon on top! OMG both were sooooo delicious! I also loved the fact that you could order different dressings. I tried the sweet basil and honey and the bacon mustard vinaigrette and just dabbed them on as needed. We were excited to visit Five Loaves, because we enjoyed all of the other locations and had recently moved to Summerville. The restaurant is so cute, and the vibe of the place was enjoyable....but that's where it ended. The food was mediocre at best. We were seated promptly, and our server (Ashley S.) was very attentive and lovely. There seemed to be some argument, or unrest between the other wait staff about changes in seating sections that we had to hear as we tried to enjoy our meal. One of the waitresses even cussed loudly while walking nearby which didn't offend me personally , but there were families with children in the restaurant (Saturday Noonish). Not professional at all! Finally, our meal. I got the brunch enchilada which was actually three rolled taquitos with what can only be described as a filling of blended mush with maybe 3 black beans in it. Very Bland. My mom ordered the Ham and Brie sandwich on sourdough. The bread was dry and crumbly except for the sections that were wet, soggy and purple from the slaw soaked through it. The ham was rolled up with the Brie inside, and slapped between the bread. I read a negative review about that same sandwich from one year ago before I wrote about my experience, so I guess they aren't intent on changing anything. read more

Went for dinner with a girlfriend and we were immediately greeted by the hostess who was so sweet. We started with the Brussels and gnocchi appetizers which were phenomenal. I was there Tuesday the 7 th and it is still a good place to eat, but they still have failed as they did over two years ago. The wife and a friend had the Shrimp Gnocchi which claimed golden raisins and fried onions Well once again they failed on those last two items . We brought it to the attention of our server as well as the manager and they got it taken care by getting some from the kitchen. This same thing had happened two years ago, so when these ladies ordered they told Emily to be sure and have raisins and onions????? I should have known it would go this way when the ladies asked to sit anyplace but the porch, and where did the hostess try to sit us?; you guess? She had to be in her 20's and we are in our 80's and I specifically heard them?? One other item I was very disappointed in was my order of mussels. They were so small you could hardly find them, rather than making up for it by giving more, it seemed the chef thought less is better. I sat here for over 30 min without a single acknowledgment. Five Loaves came highly recommended so we decided to have lunch and do some antique shopping afterward. For lunch today, it was my sister, mom and me. My niece and her girlfriend were going to meet us but they were downtown making candles and wouldn't be back in time since the restaurant closes at 3. When we arrived we were greeted and sat immediately. This is such a cute restaurant, which used to be a house so has lots of little rooms for seating. We were at a four top near the entrance in the same room as the bar. Good people watching! Our server greeted us and took drink orders about 5 minutes after we sat down. Water for everyone and a spicy Bloody Mary for me. Yum! There was a chipotle spiciness that made the Bloody Mary unique and it was beautifully garnished. For our meal, my mom got half a chicken salad croissant with potato and cheddar soup, my sister got half a ham and Brie on baguette with potato soup and I got the chicken cobb salad with a cup of the tomato tarragon with crab. To sum it up, everything was okay but not remarkable. Even the berry mascarpone lemon cake we got for dessert was good but nothing special. I was looking at the pictures online and was thinking maybe dinner is a better bet? Not sure. I do think this would be a great place to hang out in the summer on the porch and enjoy a few beverages. It feels like you are going to your aunt or grandma's house in the south for an afternoon meal. Staff was very nice and the food taste clean with fresh ingredients. Not a lot of artificial ingredients or preservatives, definitely a HUGE plus. They can get pretty crowded but they move fast, so you should be good to. Couldn't eat it as a sandwich because it just slopped out of the bread every time I tried to pick it up. Recently was forced to be gluten free. I have been struggling. This place made it easy! First my server Dixie was awesome! She made some recommendations and was on top of checking on us. We both got the same martini and loved it! The gluten-free bread didn't crumble like many do. The Turkey sandwich had a garlic cream cheese and a cranberry spread that made the sandwich amazing. Chicken club was stuffed full and sweet and savory at the same time. All the salad dressings were unique and amazing. My mom also enjoyed her meal. We were sat on the Sun porch and it felt bright and cheery. The place was busy but we didn't wait long for food and as I said our server never made us look for her. My first visit to Five Loaves, I decided to try a salad. I ordered the half portion of the Arugula Salad. It comes with beets, candied walnuts carrots and goat cheese. The salad was pretty good, I loved the candied walnuts and the arugula and veggies were very fresh however I expected roasted slices of beets but ended up with little mini cubes of beets that didn't taste earthy or roasted like I'd hoped for or had in other beet salads locally. The service was super fast, my order was ready in less than 5 minutes, the customer service was quick and efficient but I felt the portion size of the salad was a little small, even for a half salad. They have indoor and out door seating and both areas appeared clean. I'd return to try another menu item in the future. read more
