I recently bought a house knowing that its chimney had been neglected for years and needed immediate attention. I found Kenny online and was impressed with the work shown on his website. He earned my business with his very detailed inspection. He took the time to look everything over and answer all my questions. I like how his business cards, invoice, and even his truck has a diagram of a chimney and all its parts. It helped me get educated on the proper names of things and made me more effective at talking about the project. His first task was removing a 100+ pound makeshift wood roof over the chimney. He carefully lowered it onto a piece of carpet and then slid it to the edge of the roof. He invited me out to take video of it getting pushed off the roof, which I did. You should be able to find it by searching "Makeshift chimney cover getting pushed off the roof!" He did extensive tuck pointing, repaired the fire boxes, extended all three flue tiles, and put on stainless steel caps. He pressured washed and sealed the outdoor part of the chimney. He even did nice color matching to patch some holes in the brick and mortar above the fireplace (looks like someone put a TV there at one point). I'm pretty particular (maybe even excessively so), but when I brought up what looked like minor issues in the work, he had no problem fixing it. His dedication to quality and customer service is outstanding. Now, my chimney is safe to use, protected from the elements, and looks really nice too. During the home inspection of my house, the inspector scared me into believing that the amount of work needed on my chimney would cost me "at least in the thousands!". Subsequently, after calling around and getting a few quotes from leading chimney specialists, around town, I was told that the work needed would indeed cost me at least $2-$3K. On top of that I would need to pay $100 for a "pre-inspection" and quote. After weeks of searching online, I stumbled upon Five Star Chimney's website. It only took 10mn, into my first phone conversation with Kenny, for him to tell me that he'd have to stop by and inspection the chimney in order to give me a "real" quote. 1 hour later, Kenny was at my door and started inspecting the fireplace right away. Next thing you know, he's on my roof, inspecting the chimney. After 30mn, the verdict was in. The $2-$3K work that I had been quoted would only cost me $400. Kenny went over every aspects of the work that he would be performing. He did not use that condescending tone, the other "pros" were using on phone and did not use industry jargon to confuse me. I felt comfortable and, at the end, knowledgeable about the work he would be performing. As promised, a week later, Kenny was at my door. The work was completed in 2 hours. Again, he was nice enough to go over the work, before and after. He even helped me onto my roof to inspect my newly cleaned chimney. Five Star Chimney and Masonry is a great company! First of all, I'd like to thank everyone for taking the time to write your reviews. Your comments prompted me to select Five Star Chimney for my project and I was not disappointed. Here's my experience. I contacted Kenny over a year ago to have my crumbling masonry chimney crown and cap replaced. I wanted to replace it with a metal cap, but Kenny could not provide the brown color I wanted. So we decided to order one on-line. When the cap arrived Kenny and I inspected it. it was not made to spec so we decided it would not work. Kenny assisting me with haggling with the company who after a lot of hassle finally returned my money. So now we were back to square one. Kenny stuck with me and was able to locate a local shop to do the custom color painting on his own caps. The cap he made was MUCH higher quality than the on-line cap. Kenny then proceeded to prep the chimney and found more work was needed than originally thought to do the job right. He gave me a very reasonable upgrade price and patiently did a wonderful job. The cap and chimney both look great and no more leaks! If you have the time to wait and get on Kenny's schedule it's definitely worth it. He's a very hard working and honest contractor. read more

A friend of mine got me Kenny's info while he was on another job. I Emailed him and received a really quick response. I told him what I needed done and we scheduled a time for him to come out for an estimate. He is very sincere and soft spoken and NOT pushy at all. He didn't tell me I needed work done that didn't need to be done. You could tell he took pride in his work and it wasn't just another paycheck. Kenny was very flexible in setting up times to get the work done. He is very conscientious about making a mess and even went so far as to cover my neighbors cars so the mortar dust wouldn't get all over it. Work was delayed a day, which was fine by me, because the same neighbor was staining his deck and Kenny didn't want to ruin all of his hard work. After talking to several companies it was clear to us that not only did Kenny know what he was talking about but he also treated us with respect. After taking down the outer chimney layers and getting to the firebox, it was obvious that both the chimney and fireplace were a total loss and had to be rebuilt from the ground up. Of course the original bid was adjusted for the added work, but Kenny was fair and honest with his price and it was still less then any other bids for the repair of the outer shell. By the way, if you rebuild your chimney in the City of Renton, you must have a building permit and almost daily inspections. Kenny was instrumental in the permit process and with the inspectors, and the inspections went seamlessly. Most companies say they will clean up after themselves, but Kenny at 5 Star takes it to the next level. Kenny did an awesome job on my chimney restoration, all the way from tuck pointing, crown coats, flashing replacement, rain caps, to a clean sweep of the chimney. His customer service is top notch, he also offered a complimentary pressure wash and seal to the area being restored. A great value, due to the scope of work. It's best to contact Kenny through email, he responds in a timely manner. At the initial consultation appointment, he was very through and the bid written up was very clear and concise. His form that he uses has a professional drawing of a side view of chimney, so that he can specifically mark the areas that need to be addressed. Upon this visit, he also took roof top pictures and video of the condition of the chimney both inside and out, so that I was able to better asses how to proceed forward. I was referred to Kenny at Five Star Chimney and Masonry by a contractor friend who knew I was looking for someone to repair my chimney. My wife and I had gotten some other bids to do the work and decided we needed to look around a bit more before committing. I went to Kenny's website and sent him an e-mail inquiry, which he replied to within 24 hours. In the recent windstorm our chimney cap broke off as well as some brickwork and the furnace vent was bent out and over the chimney.
