John and Tana are the lovely proprietors of Five Star Thai and I love them for bringing delicious Thai food to The Region. I think this wonderful couple infuses their food with love and we all know that makes everything taste better! :) My mom and step-dad were customers of John and Tana's and became good friends with them before my mom got sick--so much so that Tana was sweet enough to make a house call when my mom was unable to go out and brought her favorite Panang curry "to help heal" her. What a wonderful woman. The Panang curry is, in fact, delicious and probably does have restorative powers--it always brightens my day, at least! My favorite (of course) is the green curry and the massaman curry (my brother's all-time fave) is great as well. I've gotten hooked on a few items, but their menu has multiple other options that are surely delicious. Thai iced coffee and tea are both tasty and I have to keep up my mom's tradition of getting a scoop of ice cream at the end of the meal (not quite Thai, but definitely Mom). Five Star does offer Thai custard, if I'm not mistaken, for those purists out there. Service is friendly and kind, Tana makes an effort to check with each table to ensure everyone is enjoying her husband's wonderful cooking and the space is comfortable and laid-back. Believe it or not, I don't know if they have crab rangoon... which probably means they do not--but that doesn't keep me from returning to Five Star again and again... and again. I've eaten here multiple times (mostly take-out) and it's rarely been anything less than wonderfully delicious (Tip: The deep-fried tofu does NOT travel well!). I'm still working my way around the menu but some consistent favorites have been the Tom Sap, Pad Thai, Drunken Noodles & Pad See Ewe. I'm a bit of a chili-head, so I always request spicy dishes as extra spicy and Five Star has yet to disappoint. They have a bit of a reputation for slow service, but the one time we dined in that was not our experience. For take-out, to be safe, I always call about 30 minutes in advance and tell them what time I'll be there & I've never had to wait for my food. The restaurant itself is small - some might say divey, I say cozy - and one of the best things is walking in there & smelling all that delicious Thai food being prepared! I came here last night for the first time and I found the food to be quite tasty. It's in a small strip mall, it's nothing fancy, just a small place with some Thai decor and cool photos on the wall of various places around the area. We started with the satay, eggrolls & pot stickers. The eggrolls were eh.. Then we pad thai w/ beef, which was very good and chicken panang. I liked the flavor of the curry & coconut milk but thought it was a little sweet( I should have added some peppers they had on the table) But it was still pretty good. Four stars for Five Star. Super-delicious Thai food in a very unassuming strip mall on a rather desolate stretch of US 30. Heard good things about it (thanks Yelp!) and decided to check it out with my mom. Totally tasty and worth the trip if you are in the area. It's a small place with a not-huge menu, and yes, it's BYOB. We opted for tea with dinner (mmm, Jasmine) and started with potstickers. They were deep-fried and crispy, served with a sweet sesame dipping sauce. I went for panang curry with chicken; mom had cashew chicken. We got a good-sized bowl of rice to share and also shared our dishes; my curry was very saucy and full of tender chicken. Mom's cashew chicken could've used a few more cashews, but the flavor was good and the veggies were plentiful. We ended on a sweet note with coconut ice cream, topped with some tasty toasted coconut. Service was friendly, the wait staff seemed to be teens/young adults, interestingly no Thai people -- but whoever's back there in the kitchen is doing it and doing it well! Prices are very reasonable, most entrees are in the $9 to 11 range. I don't have a clue if I'll ever have reason to go back, but I definitely would, no doubt. read more

I've actually been to Thailand, Bangkok to be exact and several towns in the doung moung province... you simply cannot get fresh coconut as cheap as you could there so they mix it up w butter or some dairy... some of the food is good but far from my experience in mother land... the tom yum was a fav in Thailand, but unfortunately falls short on ingredients, quality and taste here... over all I order take out once in a while and for the price... I have dined here many times, but the last two times were very disappointing. I wonder if they are under new management. The Second Last Time The service and food was terrible. When we arrived, there was one other couple at another table. They sat us at a table, and then walked away. It was 5 minutes before the waitress came back and asked us for our drink order. We said we were ready to order our food as well, but she said she could only get our drinks, someone else would take our food order. (We had the same waitress 4 weeks earlier and she was much better). We got our drinks, and drank them in the 10 minutes before someone else came and took our food order. When the food arrived, we had to ask for silverware and table condiments. The food was bland and not up to their usual quality. The Last Time Convinced that it must have been an off nite, we went again. While the service was better, the food fell flat. I don't know if the cook has moved on, but it was again at best bland and not at all what used to be "Five-Star Thai". Crossing this restaurant off my must-go list. read more

I'm here in Merrillville for work and after a looong drive from Chicago out to this town, I was craving some light comforting soup. I was scared I'd only find a sea of heavy chain food restaurants, but....YELP to the rescue!! This little restaurant turned up on my Yelp app and I headed straight for it dreaming of some Thai Chicken Veggie soup. The place is tiny in a little strip mall and very simple. Definitle mom & pop shop. I quickly ordered some soup & basil stirfry with tofu. The soup was perfect and homey. Clear, clean broth full of flavor and fresh veggies. The tofu was just lightly sauteed the way I like it, vs deep fried first like most americanized places do. This is a great little oasis for homestyle thai food. There is one thing I miss (actually, several) about Chicago and that's access to great food hubs. I haven't had good thai fried rice since my move and I was REALLY craving some. The 2 hour drive to Oak Park Chicago to King and I restaurant just wasn't feasible. With Yelp by my side, I found this place and was soon on my way! Their chicken thai fried rice was disappointing, but not because it wasn't half-way decent, I had built up in my head that the meal was going to rival my favorite back home. It didn't. I had maybe one tomato in my rice, a piece of egg, and zero cucumbers. However, I am thankful to have another option other than fried rice. I think this meal just made me homesick! :/ I will most likely order from here again and specify that I want tomatoes and cucumbers in my food and for them to go easy on the pepper! ::sigh:: Side note: THis place is very tiny inside. Great place for Thai !! We have been looking in the area for "our Thai place" and I think that we found it. Just moved here from the Pacific Northwest and was feeling a little nostalgic for some of our favorite eats. We ordered for take out and had the Chicken Pad Thai, level 3 for me which was the perfect amount of heat and the misses ordered the level 2. Good price and quality, would recommend it to others on a similar hunt. *Only negative is that it's on the traffic ridden 30 and it takes a min or so to get there from the highway. Enjoy. read more

A friend's family introduced me to Thai food at 5-star, and I've been hooked ever since. The prices are very reasonable, less than $10 per dish, and the food is almost always cooked to perfection (the Satay came out a little lukewarm a couple of times). One tip if you do decide to go: CALL AHEAD for a table, and if you know what you want, order it ahead of time. The dining area is very small, 10-12 tables at most, and if a family comes in, you're in for a wait. There's no corking fee, and as is mentioned in the other reviews, there's a liquor store right next door, so BYOB, as they do not serve alcohol at 5-star. The spicy dishes are all the kind of spicy that is hot only when the food is in your mouth: there's no real lingering burn to it. The Thai iced tea is a perfect counterpart, the cream cutting through the spice like a hot knife through butter. All in all, a favourite. read more

Every time we go in for pick up, they're always at max capacity (which says something). The only two issues I would say is the dining area is a little "worn" could use some TLC and small. Reasonably priced thai food. Not the best I have had but prepared with love. The 4 stars is for the price compared to quality of food. In a head on comparison with some of the Chicagoland Thai restaurants this would be a 3 star. The only ding we feel we should give them is for the service. The staff seemed very uncomfortable welcoming guests, they seemed very 'uncaring'. Also, the place needs a little work on the ambiance. It's good to eat there fore the price (about 8.95 for most entrees). The curries were good, nothing to get truly excited about but I'd certainly say better than most other regional Thai places (I will review those as well). read more

This restuarant has been around for a while, and last week was my very first visit. Wish I hadn't waited so long! Everything was really good... only minor "complaint" was my husband's entree- only a few shrimp in his entree... but beyind that, it was so good. We got 3-4 appetizers (including the chicken satay), and I got the coconut milk soup (my first time trying that)- the husband, a salad... and THEN two entrees! OK, here are the details of my visit as I experienced them. 5 Star has been touted by a former co-worker as one of the best Thai restaurants he has ever been to...and this is a guy who thinks nothing of driving 50 miles to try a new place to eat. So the fact that 5 Star is close to home is a huge deal for him. So three of us went last night at 6pm. Like other reviewers have said, there's no ambience to speak of. There is roughly 12 tables inside the small dining room area...pictures on the wall of abstract art and the THai royal family...a bookcase with National Geographic magazines and books on Asia...no music. The books and magazines are there for the same reason they are in a doctor's office...you need something to do while you wait. And wait. And wait. The place was packed; the wait staff (two young women) were pleasant and efficient. This is a BYOB place. Lost of people came in with wine and beer, which they could conveniently buy at the liquor store right next door. I don't know if there is a corking fee or not, but I know 5 Star doesn't serve any alcohol. Lots of differnt psychographics were represented in the clientele: there were families with small children, young married couples, older couples, lesbian couples, single people, friends. It became apparant to me that the way to really enjoy 5 Star is to CALL AHEAD. Many people evidently ordered take out, so when they arrived, their food weas ready to go. Many people ordered ahead, so when they came to the restaurant and sat down, their food came out rather quickly. For people like us, who just showed up and ordered, the wait was probably unacceptably long. I'm sure it was at least 45 minutes from the time we ordered to the time our food arrived. Now, the food. I ordered the Calimari Basil. I am currently fasting for Lent, but shellfish is ok to have, and it is a fairly diet conscious preparation. This was tender pieces of squid, scored in a criss-cross pattern and sauteed together with bamboo shoots, green and red pepper, fresh basil leaves, lemon grass, ginger, garlic, onions, mushrooms and chili pepper. Spooned over jasmine rice, it made for a tasty, moderately spicy, full flavored meal which seemed rather easy on the calories. The calimari was cooked very well and had no fishy taste to it at all; the vegetables were cooked just right, and the sauce was light yet complex and savory. My companions ordered a chicken curry and a beef pad noodle dish and were similarily pleased with their choices. My buddy remarked, as his bowl of curry was almost gone, that the remaining tablespoon of sauce was like 'the nectar of the gods'. I didn't try the curry cause my friend orders it extra hot, which is too much for me. But the pad noodle dish (not pad thai, but one with a darker brown sauce, broccoli, and beef) I tried was very nice. It was good to peer into the kitchen and see that the cooks were all Thai women...so you know they know their stuff. The food itself is really pretty good. Call ahead if you are going to go, and then you'll be able to give this place "5 stars". read more

Then it was clear to them that it was my fault i couldn't hear a single word from either of them . They made sure i knew where my card went in the tablet POS . Then made a motion toward how they would like me to tip the waitress ( i use waitress in the loosest possible sense of the word ) . One waitress must have just started today , mere seconds before we walked in , i think ? I love this place and have dined there since before 2006 i think. great local Thai restaurant! their pad thai is a favorite among me and my friends. ive had pad thai at numerous other places and five star's is, hands down, the best. i tried the massamon curry last night with my dad and we both agreed that it has amazing flavor. biting into the pineapple thats in the curry gives it a nice sweet taste. the curry entrees look a little on the small side, but I think they make enough so you are not overly full. :) read more

In in the interest of full disclosure, I used to waiter here before moving to NYC. That being said, after returning to the region for the holidays, the food is still quite excellent, despite the chef moving to Thailand almost five years ago. Tana still manages the day to day operations and the new cook manages to emulate the high quality established by Jon since it opened. I had the pad thai, pad see ew, and panang curry a few nights ago, and it was just as delicious as the late nights after the doors closed and the last customer left. Ordered red curry with chicken and the fire dish on Uber Eats. Delivery took an hour and a half then when food arrived I noticed they forgot my rice for one of the dishes. For an entree I had the red curry beef, spice level 2, I wasn't sure where to start, I would go higher next time. My wife had the lime chicken, also very good. I have been to many Thai restaurants and this literally kicks the crap out of every single one! It is amazing! It's so laid back and a nice little place to go on a date.
