This last time our service was below average, very nice server she was just mia most of the night, we were tucked back in a spot with no one, we are easy to miss and was hard to get anyone's attention, food was lacking in flavor and texture, got the scallops, the scallops were fine but how it was served was really disappointing along with the sauce being thin like water, my husbands steak was overcooked and dry, the fries for the kids were cool to touch and undercooked, I actually had to walk around to look for our server to get the bill, then she proceeds to set tables while we wait with the card/folder in hand to pay, we didn't complain because we ate the food and we didn't have to cook at home but we won't be back. read more

Let me preface this review with the fact that I am a previous restaurant worker, my husband a previous bartender. Our standards are likely, higher than most bc we tend to look at the restaurant holistically and we do expect the level of service and attention to detail we gave to the many establishments we worked in over the years. Nevertheless, here we go! We both grew up in Issaquah, and have moved around the country and Seattle area over the years, ultimately returning to Issaquah to raise our kiddo. Flat Iron used to be the best meal in Issaquah or a fancier place to go for date nights etc. For the exception of Jak's it used to be the best steakhouse in Issaquah. We recently went in for brunch on a Saturday morning, around 10:30am. There was no one else in the restaurant. The first thing I noticed were the dusty light fixtures. All were caked in dust. The decor hasn't changed in 15 years. Dark interiors, outdated metal everywhere. Burgundy walls. The same it's always been. It's sad that in Gilman Village, which is so charming, most restaurants are old and need updating. But also, their patios could be so amazing amongst the Christmas lights and decorations throughout the village. But like the other patios there, Flat Iron's was wet, full of dead leaves and closed down. It's a shame that outside dining with heaters isn't more embraced in our area as it could truly double business. Anyway, if you're going to shut down the patio, maybe close the blinds so we're not staring at a derelict area. Our server was so nice and sweet and took great care of us! Nothing of note in that regard. But for the majority of our meal, we were the only table so I suppose it was easy to give good service. Not to detract from her skill and knowledge. The menu is mostly Mexican. Which, is not what I expected and not what it used to be. First, we started with a Bloody Mary and an Irish Coffee. The Bloody Mary was disgusting. I'm sorry, I hate to be that blunt, but it was. Just pure onion and raw garlic. The tomato took such a back seat, it was hard to even detect. There was no salt, no tang or acid, just raw onion and garlic. I asked to send it back and just went with a standard mimosa. The Irish coffee was strong, but fine. The husband ordered the Chivito. Which was steak over fries with chimichurri. It was all fine but a little confused? Sage and garlic fries with an herby and acidic sauce. So might as well have not added sage and garlic bc you can't taste it over the chimmi. I ordered the chilaquiles Roja. Our server suggested I order the pastrami hash and in hindsight, I should've listened to her. My eggs were cooked well but for $22, a plate with eggs, canned refried beans and tortilla chips soaked in sauce, I was hoping for a flavor explosion and to be wowed. In seconds, the chips became a pile of mush. The small spoon scoop of beans were fine, but I didn't have enough to eat with each bite. Eventually, the one note chips began to taste like spaghetti sauce and I became turned off. I didn't even finish the eggs bc it all just tasted so...sad? One note and a pile of mush. My son had to use the restroom in the middle of our meal so I took him. Bathrooms are the same they've always been, but older now. The sinks are gross. The porcelain has broken in both and is missing in large spots. Moreover though, they both look as if they haven't been scrubbed in months. Yellowish film covering them with water spots all over the faucet and handles. The soap dispenser and paper towel dispenser were also caked in dust, just like the dining room fixtures. The toilet seat was almost completely detached from the seat, with the loud outdated metal doors clanging behind us as we closed the stall door. Overall, it's sad to see the prices steadily increase, while nothing new or fresh is done inside. It feels as if most of these restaurants in Gilman Village (and in Issaquah in general) are resting on their laurels and on the fact that families and long time Issaquah residents will always return due to convenience or nostalgia. All of these things are simple, inexpensive fixes. Monthly deep cleans, a repaint of the sinks to seal in the broken porcelain, an update somewhere in the dark dingy dining room - all of these are doable after closing and before reopening the following day. As for the food, I wish they'd go back to being a solid steakhouse. Random Mexican items that aren't even executed well mixed in with croissant sandwiches and bruschetta Benedict's (???) is just weird and confusing to the customer. I hope Flat Iron can pull it together. Allowing Black Duck and Iron Duck to keep them afloat is annoying. Fix it up or close the doors, please. read more

Seated at 7:20, ordered around 7:30, just as we were discussing flagging someone down, our waitress finally came back to the table at 8:05 to apologize and tell us she forgot to input our order. At that point it was too late for us to wait any longer. It was a normal night, not busy, server never checked in with us to catch her mistake and other servers walked by the entire time without noticing us sitting around waiting. We chose Mashed Potatoes and the Gentleman serving us was kind enough to get us some authentic gravy, which actually isn't on the menu - The Dinner Menu is well balanced and features American / Bar food. We ordered Flat Iron Steak Salad, which was served with lettuce, Bleu Cheese and a Portion of Steak IV. Service and Ambience: - This place is decievingly large with a lot of seating all around. The decor is classy and rustic and maintained very well - The Service was top notch. It had been several years since we'd been here and had hopes it had improved, not the case. We ordered some drinks and clams to start at least 10 minutes before ordering entrees. The clams, although good, took nearly 30 minutes to arrive. Less than five minutes after we got the clams, the entrees were delivered. I ordered the NY Steak and my wife the Flat Iron Steak. Oddly apparently we were expected to cut our meat with a butter knife as I eventually had to get up and find someone to get us some steak knives. I ordered my steak medium rare and cut into the center to find it at best rare if not nearly raw in the middle so I sent it back. Both of our steaks were tough. And although they don't advertise prime, if these were even Choice grade of meat I'd be shocked. Frankly the highlight of the dinner was the wine we got with dinner but that's pretty hard for the restaurant to screw up. We were given a desert menu and looking at the pairings they suggest to go with the desserts, the management of this place clearly doesn't understand the industry. No one apologized for either the timing of the appetizers, lack of a steak knife nor the mistake on my steak temperature. I can imagine that the dinner scene is much livelier, since only a few tables were occupied during lunchtime. **TIP** The lunch menu is fairly limited, with mainly a selection of sandwiches, salads and a couple entrees. For vegetarians, the options are even more narrow, leaving mainly the salads or a Portobello Mushroom burger. It is a steakhouse after all. Being my first time here, I knew I had to get something with steak, so I chose the Steak & Portobello Sandwich with fries ($15). A few pieces of perfectly medium steak, plump slices of mushroom, onion and a savory red pepper aioli all on toasted sourdough made this a delicious sandwich with layers of flavor. The steak was amazing as I would expect - super tender and grilled to perfection. Unfortunately, the sandwich itself was very messy, dripping and falling apart with each bite. To appear more civil, I ended up eating it with a knife and fork.... which looked just as ridiculous as it sounds, haha. Service was alright. Our waitress seemed a bit nonchalant and despite how quiet the restaurant was, after we had ordered, she only returned to our table once we were done eating to handle the billing. Although I enjoyed lunch here (which was also reasonably priced), if you're looking to indulge and don't mind getting spendy, come here for dinner and order the real deal - an actual steak! Flat Iron Grill Burger... YES. FIG is a solid lunch option in Issaquah. A little more than you'd usually spend on lunch, but worth it on occasion. Note that the burger ($17) appears to only be available for lunch- it features a nice rib steak blend, bacon, cheese, truffle aioli, and fixins, between a perfectly char toasted brioche bun. The sage garlic fries.. amazing. The location is quaint and convenient in Gilman village, with easy parking in the lots on either side of the village. Lunch service and staff are friendly, vibrant, and on a nicer day, you have the option to sit outside. I've been in a handful of times for lunch and have nothing but good things to say. I did once stop in for dinner and wasn't a huge fan of the dining experience. I'd give the dinner service 3/5 stars- it was a bit too dark and cold, and I don't entirely believe that you get that nicer steakhouse/grill vibe you'd get from a normal decent steakhouse. Our drinks never came and we had to remind the waitress about our wine and iced teas. We got our food a little after an hour, finished half way, but our Ceasar salad never came. Not great for the price. My husband ordered a Caesar salad which, according to the menu, should have been $14. He added steak which was a $10 upgrade. When he got the salad, it was 5 pieces of uncut romaine lettuce with some dressing and a little bit of Parmesan cheese. When we got the bill, we had been charged $16 for 5 pieces of lettuce with a bit of cheese and dressing. The steak was good but the salad was pathetic. I ordered the turkey apple brie panini with a side salad (instead of fries) and they brought me fries instead of the salad. Not a huge deal but the fries were garlic fries and way too garlicky for my liking. The kids meals were $11 a piece for what probably would've been $8 maximum anywhere else. Overall, really disappointed and left feeling robbed. We decided to have dinner here and made a reservation, just in case. It's a small, cozy, dimly-lit place, and the tables are all spaced out well for social distancing. I started out with the Katy May cocktail and the Manila Clams. The clams were small, but tasty. The sauce was good, especially with dipping the bread in it. I ordered the Porchetta and replaced my polenta with the marbled potatoes, and my friend ordered the New York Strip and also got it with the marbled potatoes instead the mashed potatoes that came with it. We really enjoyed our meal. The Porchetta was way better than I expected to be. And my fried brussel sprouts and marbled potatoes sides were awesome. My friend really loved the potatoes. We couldn't stop talking about how good they were. I think I could just order a whole plate of those marbled potatoes and be good. We were very happy with our dinner. And service was friendly. I've been eating at the flat iron grill since it opened (15+ years). I've never had a bad meal there. I think they are on their 3rd chef, but each one has brought new dishes while keeping my favorites. My wife and I have eaten there twice since they have reopened after Covid. It's was so nice to get a good meal. We both ate steaks, had the delicious pear and arugula salad, and the Brussel sprouts appetizer. All excellent. It's always been my favorite restaurant in Issaquah and that won't change. Ps. There wine list is great and has some good values. The whiskey collection is very impressive! First and last experience here. I will not go back. I ordered to go. Evidently if you walk through the wrong entrance some big dude gets upset. He was condescending and menacing. Started walking me out what i found out was a poorly marked service entrance. Telling me I needed to go all the way around to the front door. When I pointed out the big welcoming sign "Flat Iron Grill" above the entrance he got more condescending and told me to put a mask on. I had used my shirt as I forgot mask at house. That was enough for me. I got in my car and left. I called and talked to woman who answered phone to see if maybe they would curbside deliver. They refused. Not going back. This is a pretty decent restaurant. It is situated in this really REALLY quaint and cute plaza in Issaquah. The plaza has a lot of family friendly stores next to the restaurant so you can take a nice stroll before or after your meal. They have plenty of parking. The four times that we've been here, the host/hostesses and waiter/waitress has been pretty nice. They were always attentive with taking down your order, refilling water, and checking in to see how you're doing. I would say that their brunch menu doesn't have as much appealing items as dinner. For brunch, we ordered to the flat iron grill sandwich and salad. it was just okay. I wouldn't say it was that impressive. What was impressive was their dinner meal where you can get a dinner for two (forget the name of the item) that comes with chicken, steak, shrimp, and sausage plus two sides. I highly recommend their cauliflower. Super yummy and scrumptious. Their brussels sprouts are pretty good too. I wouldn't get the garlic sage fries, though they are a popular item on the menu. It isn't that special. Just fries... I would have given this place five stars but I wasn't too pleased that I couldn't change my baby's diaper in the bathroom. They didn't have a diaper changing station. The only thing they had was this small flimsy glass table that they put paper towels on. I'm not going to put my baby on this flimsy table. I asked what they could do to accommodate but they said that they weren't exactly a kid friendly restaurant. I was super confused because 1) they have high chairs 2) they have a kids' menu 3) there were like four tables with kids sitting there. For a restaurant that has great ambiance and food, I would expect them to have a diaper changing station. Their bathroom is quite big. WOW, I would call this place a hidden gem. Myself, wife, and our daughter was down the road at Fox Hollow Farms for the day and when leaving jumped on Yelp to find a local dinner spot in Issaquah. Flat Iron Grill popped up with a lot of 4 star reviews and the menu looked good so we decided to give it a try. Located in the Gilman Village which is a neat open air shops and restaurants. The inside is nice and well appointed. I must say the very first thing I noticed was the HUGE selection of Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. They have more bottles that any place in WA I've ran across recently, easily 100 bottles and many very rare and hard to find. The bartender came out personally and greeted us and walked me through some Bourbon bottles I was interested in trying. So if you drink bourbon then this is your place! I ordered the new york med rare which came with mashed potatoes and mushrooms. Steak was perfectly cooked and well seasoned. The mushrooms were amazing, awesome flavor on top of the red meat. My wife had the ahi steak extra rare and it was absolutely delicious. We will be back! read more

Tucked in the seemingly dying and deserted Gilman Village (could be cuz it's Sunday), about half a dozen patrons occupy the likes of Flat Iron Grill. We join in the fun as we opted for the patio on a beautiful sunny and blue day to take advantage of the happy hour menu pricing. You save about 3 bucks off their regular prices. Promptly chose the Clams and Chorizo, Grilled Artichoke and the New York Sirloin. The Artichoke was not my cup of tea and was bland and the dip it came with didn't help. I would say this dish is a matter of preference as I can see my grandma liking this soft appetizer. Clams and chorizo were OK, overall a bit salty with the toast pieces being rock hard. It almost felt like your teeth would break first before the bread did! Sirloin came out and made the meal much more satisfying. It was laid on top of Fingerling potatoes, juicy mushrooms and a savory sauce that pulled it all together. Above average cut of meat. In all, the meal did not warrant a 4.5 stars given by the collective whole. Rather, the combination I sampled here was a 3 star dinner. Be forewarned of the illusions casted and the numerous ratings of a "5" by yelpers who only have 3 or so reviews under their belt. I have my suspicions. read more

I was gifted a Living Social deal for Flat Iron so I came here for dinner with a friend. We decided to just share a few starters and a side dish for our dinner so we could have more variety. We got the tuna carpaccio, F.I.G. lets, roasted cauliflower with vintage white cheddar, and the soup of the night - artichoke with truffle. I think my favorite dish was the F.I.G. lets because it was unique and I enjoyed the combination of contrasting flavors of the smoked bacon, sweet fig and goat cheese all in one bite. Also, how can anyone not like a dish with bacon? :) The artichoke soup was really good, too.. really smooth and the truffle oil drizzled on top was the perfect finish. Overall, the service was good and the food was tasty, so I might come back if I'm ever in the area again, but that probably won't be likely. This place is one of our usuals due to it's close proximity to work and their great selection of gf items. I really love its location in the cutest little shopping center that never fails to catch my interest on my short walk from the parking lot to the restaurant. Once you step into the restaurant, you'll immediately pick up their intimate vibe with low romantic lighting, soft industrial touches to the interior design, and a stunning backdrop on the wall opposite the entrance. The service here is consistently friendly and usually pretty on point with food timing and attention to their table. One of my frequent selections off the dinner menu is the salmon served with asparagus and a delicious puree. Its usually spot on, though there have been a couple times I've gotten it far too under or overdone. Another favorite is their steak and blue cheese salad that really just hits the spot for lunch hour. The portion sizes are generous and if you aren't a big eater you'll likely have leftovers. Price is responsible and the friendliness of the waitstaff make you want to return, and we do. read more

I was in Issaquah and decided to check out Flat Iron Grill. The location is kind of odd and can be hard to find. BI was pleased overall with the meal. The wine list is decent. For the meal, I ordered the flat iron steak and the cheese plate. The cheeses plate was good. The three cheese and the fig jam were excellent, but I would have preferred different crackers. Fortunately, the steak and polenta were excellent. The steak was cooked perfectly with a good sear and nice redness. Many reviews hard comparisons to Jak's, but the steaks hold up really well. I am not always sure about sauces on steaks. It can cover up poor meat. In this case, it was superb, it really made for an excellent taste. As soon as we sat down we said "You know who would love this place? We have to come back with her." Yeah, so there's that. The menu is full of delicious options and we had a hard time deciding on just an entree for each! We decided on the FIG Burger and the Salmon Cake Sandwich. Fig Burger: Heads up- the FIG Burger is a carnivore's delight with a big juicy hamburger patty, lots of bacon and melted cheese with a savory tomato sauce topping. The house salad and vinaigrette was a nice light complimentary pairs to the heavy burger. But there were no figs to be found. We learned from the server that FIG is an acronym for the restaurant name Flat Iron Grill and this is their signature burger. -- Well we got that wrong, oops! lol! This burger would be so good with a lovely fig topping though and maybe some bacon candied brussel sprouts on the side? The Salmon Cake Sandwich was lovely and very flavorful. The breading was very light and delicate- usually I like seafood cakes like this a little harder and more patty like. Despite the softer salmon cake - the sandwich was delicious with pickled red cabbage and garlic aioli on a potato bun. Herbed fries with ketchup on the side balanced out the sweetness of the sandwich nicely. The restaurant itself was very busy even at 1:30pm late lunch time. But we were seated right away and there was no wait. Service was fast, friendly and accurate- you get what you ask for and promptly. They kept our glasses refilled and kindly let us stay over during the afternoon break time so we could chat, catch up a bit and take our time with the meal. Our party of 5 got there with reservations on Father's Day and got seated within a few minutes of arriving. The place didn't look very busy, so I'm not sure a reservation was even necessary. We ordered the empanadas, clams and chorizo, and shrimp for appetizers, which were all pretty good. No real standouts, but there's nothing to complain about. For the entrees, we got two sets of the dinner for two. Each order comes with andouille links (they were out so we got subbed pork belly), shrimp, half a (small) chicken, and their "iron steak". Everything thing was covered in their chimmichurri sauce, so it all sort of melded together. Each order also came with your choice of two sides. It was $69 per set, and it comes with a lot of food, but none of it spectacular. The steak was chewy and gamey. That was the most disappointing part of the dish, just because the place is literally called Iron Steak. The pork belly was crispy and sweet. The shrimp was overcooked. The chicken was moist and actually went well with the sauce. I wouldn't order that again. I'm a person that wants to try everything, so an entree like that always seem appealing. It rarely turns out to be good. I've learned my lesson. Our waitress was sweet and the outdoor seating is nice on a warm day like today.
