I've been a fan of Flatwater for years - especially of their former build your own Bloody Mary bar on Sundays. While small inside, the true gem is the wonderful patio that overlooks the canal - on a summer day, nothing better than this patio. I recently went back to enjoy dinner with a friend. I opted for the nachos with chicken - ummmmmmm, delightful. While an appetizer, this is a great meal for someone and I had leftovers , so even better! Friday nights at flatwater are a vibe! The place was packed and there was live music. Be prepared to have a long wait! We were told a two hour wait but it was probably an hour max. We ended up just grabbing a drink somewhere else while we waited. I got the nachos with pulled pork. So delicious and every chip had some toppings. Not the huge pile where chips on bottom have nothing. If you're not a pork fan you can also get them with chicken like my friend did but it is an up charge of $8. read more

The vibes here on a nice sunny day are immaculate. That being said, the wait can be pretty extensive. We went for lunch around 1:30/2 and outdoor seating for 3 people was 3 hours. The restaurant isn't very big which is understandable. However, they do save your spot in line electronically so you can walk around and receive a text when your table is ready. I ordered the rum runner while waiting which was super good. The nachos were equally fantastic. I love a good Reuben so I had to give theirs a try. I will say that this is certainly not a traditional Reuben. The ingredients and prep is different - so be aware. I wouldn't prefer this over a regular Reuben sandwich but it was still good. This place has a wide variety of different food, we have yet to try something we didn't like. We are partial to the fish tacos and the wings but o can say a thug bad about the food. The restaurant sits on the canal so the patio is where we always choose to sit, you can see ducks and it feels relaxing watching the water. On the weekends they have a lot of live music we have managed to catch several live shows on Friday night, fantastic! The service is good and the staff seems to really care if you are having a good time and enjoying the food. read more

The bang bang cauliflower tacos were delicious, my friend said her blackened mahi was also great... had another couple friends who both tried the smoked salmon pesto wrap and were sorely disappointed. I tasted it--it was just very bland. But, the nachos were also good. And last but not least, we tried the hummingbird cake which was so good (which means a lot coming from someone who was already full AND does not have a sweet tooth). So, that said, 5 stars. The service was good. The only odd thing was that the restaurant closed at 10p and when we were walking out at... probbbbbably like 9:50p... literally the remaining staff was sitting at the bar and clapped as we exited. Flatwater is our favorite place in Broad Ripple for relaxed, outdoor dining with cold brews and both vegan & non-vegan food options! Service is consistently good and the outdoor ambiance is nice, especially if there are paw friends hanging out. If you're seated next to the canal, you'll likely observe ducks and the like in the water. :) On our latest visit, we enjoyed the rice noodle salad, Korean lettuce wraps, and black bean burger with chips. Most of the items noted as vegetarian on their menu can easily be veganized (e.g., hold the cheese). All was fresh and delicious, as always! I've always been intrigued by Flatwater since they always have music playing, so I decided to stop in for a late lunch. We were seated immediately near the front of the restaurant and our waitress was quick to get our orders. She was very attentive and constantly checked on our table. I appreciated the selection of dishes for vegetarians, and was tempted to try the bang bang cauliflower tacos. I ended up going with the blackened mahi with coconut jasmine rice. I was realllllyyy excited since I love coconut rice, but was a bit disappointed in my dish. It was oddly wet (see picture) in black bean juice (almost as if a can of black beans was dumped onto my plate). I didn't taste any of the coconut flavor in the rice and the fish was over cooked to the point where I couldn't cut into it with a fork. I saw other pictures of the same dish on Yelp, and mine seems to look the most different. Maybe it was just an off day, but the meal was pricy so I was disappointed. Flatwater is easily one of the best places I have been to in all of the capital! The attention to detail, menu variety, simple yet tasteful and easy to enjoy atmosphere, and real focus on customer service with not just two coming around to make sure we are having a good time and satisfied with our orders makes for a top-tier dining experience. Easy to see why I was told this is often booked solid and pushing for long waits. We happened to time our arrival right, a casual Monday afternoon before 5:00, us six guys were seated right away. I noticed the draft menu was small yet offering decent variety and right picking for winter sipping. The dark stout I had was perfect and set up a need for appetizers. We tried the calamari, brisket nachos, and Cuban wings. The plates showed up looking decently full for expensive appetizers. Could have complained about penny pinching but realized quit quick that at these flavors and chef skills the apps here are definitely worth the starting charge to excite the appetizers. We all enjoyed the savory and sweet eats! Fantastic nachos, well topped, the calamari especially tender and uniquely done for a casual American grill, much higher quality than expected. Two of us went for the brisket Ruben. Given how many I've sampled in the area twas an easy tie with the kimchi Reuben from Half Pint, amazing and perfectly made meats balanced with the slaw and bread. There were no complaints from the other five with me. Made me feel so good having picked out this place near randomly on a whim to fill up time and ourselves before my friends late flight back to Denver, we all would do Flatwater again! Flatwater is somewhere I don't get to go very often, but every time I do I love it. My boyfriend and I came here during lunch on a random afternoon and I'm sure glad we did. It was a beautiful day, but a little windy so we opted to sit inside near the bar next to the large garage-style open windows. I love the atmosphere here with the inside-outside dining and being on the canal. It's the perfect lunch spot for a warm, sunny day. They had a fried cod sandwich on special that came with their house chips. The fish sandwich was really flavorful and I was able to decide what toppings I wanted on it, so I went with lettuce, onions, and pickles. The tartar sauce was served on the side. I usually do not like tartar sauce, but I tried this one and I actually thought it was pretty good. It wasn't too thick and had a lot of pickle flavor. Something that caught me by surprise was the chips! These were soo good. They were sea salt and pepper and packed with flavor. I thought I'd regret getting them instead of splurging and paying more for fries, but boy was I wrong. Overall, I have always loved this place and continue to love it. What a popular place! I came here for dinner with friends and we had about an 1.5 hour wait. Since we didn't have a schedule we decided to wait it out. They have a nice deck waiting area with a server that comes around for drink orders while you wait, which was great! After around 1.5 hours, we were finally seated. And with perfect timing, we were able to pull up a table to our other friends who were already seated. They got there food once we were finally able to join them but it was great to just sit by the water in the beautiful evening weather. Our server seemed stressed and it showed with his mood, but he checked in on us frequently. I ordered my first aperol spritz which was delicious. My friend and I ordered the BBQ smoked wings and loaded fries to share. Both were delicious, especially the fries. Gorgeous atmosphere and great food! The waitress was so incredibly nice! The Red Slipper cocktail was wonderful! Unfortunately this was one of out later stops in the day after a lot of other food, so I only had the tuna tartar this time, but it was absolutely delicious! We don't eat land animals but one of our friends we went with got the Reuben and could not stop raving about it, she actually ended up going back the next day and ordering it again! First time at Flatwater and it was wonderful. The music and environment gave me a southern/bayou feel. The service was top notch. Our server Danny recommended the Black Bean Tacos and they were excellent. A thin layer of cheese between the tortillas and bit of a kick really make them. I also tried a bit of my friends Brussel sprouts which were delici. We were also brought drinks by the manager AND he bussed our table when we finished eating and made conversation. Danny was also very funny and patient. The employees here seem to like their job and it shows. I will definitely be making return trips to Flatwater. read more

We had our Friday night date night here on 10/28/22 I had just washed my hair before leaving the house and I was freezing. When we arrived at the restaurant the hostess got us a table immediately. While I appreciate that there was no wait, the table that we were seated at was directly in front of the door. I informed the waitress that I was freezing and the server moved us immediately. I appreciated that. We got calamari as an appetizer, and it was good. I prefer smaller pieces that are crunchy but I still enjoyed theirs. I also got a pasta and shrimp dish that wasn't very flavorful but still enjoyable. Parking was bad but not the restaurant fault. All in all it was a nice evening read more

Met a friend for dinner on a Thursday evening. One of the nicest weather wise for some time. We arrived at 5:30, but the outside seating was already full. We could have waited, but they offered seating in the bar by a huge window, it was perfect. We ordered our drinks and shared a calamari appetizer, it taste great. I then had the blackened mahi on coconut rice; it was incredible. The rice reminded more of risotto; I ate all of it which is unusual for me. The mango chutney was perfect with the mahi. This place was WONDERFUL. We specifically found this place on a list of dog-friendly restaurants in Indy to visit post-eclipse and had a fabulous time. Even on a super busy evening, the staff was incredibly friendly and got us settled in the porch waiting area with outstanding cocktails while we waited for a table. The cocktails were all delicious (highly recommend their take on a whisky mule). The staff loved our dog and all kept coming over to say hello, and even brought him a bowl of water mid-meal when he looked like he was getting warm. Saturday at 6:30 we decided to wonder over to Flatwater and see if we could get a table. They put our name on the list and told us it would be about 45 minutes. We took a walk to grab an ice cream elsewhere before settling in for a walk. Within about 20 minutes they called sharing that they had an area free where we could have a cocktail and an appetizer while we waited for our table which would soon be ready. This restaurant handled social distancing protocols so well, while simultaneously not sacrificing service. When our table quickly became available they promptly brought our drinks there instead. The ambiance on the deck on the water is awesome. The food was good, lots to choose from. Loved my cocktail, it tasted like summer. Tonight was no exception and it was an absolutely beautiful night to sit outside and listen to some music. The place was Poppin, the music was fun, Staff were friendly and the food was fabulous. Omg it was really delicious everybody need to go there! First of all the view, you got a perfect view of the white river and the ducks.
