Okey dokey... this place has received a serious amount of hype, so I had to check it out. Cheap and quick: yay! Ambience: not applicable (it's a drive-up stand with a wet picnic bench in a rainy parking lot, the day I visit). Got the ham and cheese waffle, with a latte -- waffle chewy-crispy and light/flavorful, ham yummy, cheese suspiciously Velveeta-like (remember me? Food snob?), latte not bad, but the coffee beans have obviously been burnt (which I sort of like, sometimes). Hubby liked what he got well enough, but had a hard time eating it in the car (it was exceptionally well-wrapped). He didn't share, so I can't comment. I'd be willing to try it again (getting the Canadian bacon with maple next time). read more

Flavour Spot started my waffle obsession a few summers ago. The wife and I had ventured up north to get a composting bin from Metro, which finally me the excuse I needed to hit up the early Waffle Mecca. There was quite a group of people waiting for waffles in that little parking lot, but they all seemed excited about the impending goodness in which they would soon partake. We decided to share the strawberry jam and sweet cream waffle. After about 15 minutes, we were standing face-to-face with our first wafflewich. Alternating bites and faces of contentment, our waffle disappeared in about five minutes. Right down the street from where I usually stay when visiting Portland, my friend and I like to stop here and get waffles after walking the dogs in the morning. The waffles are good. I don't know. Maybe I was expecting the breakfast apocalypse or something, but this was just ok. Actually, it was kind of below ok when you factor in the price of the waffles and being squashed butt to butt into a tiny picnic bench with an annoyed hipster barely skimming his New Yorker to my right and a screaming child with Nutella all over her face to my left. I got a coffee and a maple/sausage waffle. The maple butter stuff was overwhelmingly sweet and mapley. Normally I wouldn't complain about maple being mapley but this goop was everywhere and with way too much of it. If I want a waffle swimming in maple syrup I'll check out a greasy spoon and get a table to myself and a fork. If I want a waffle folded in half with two Jimmy Dean patties stuffed inside, I will head over to a bachelor's house and stay $4 richer. Thinking this was maybe kind of a standalone dud, I went with a plain waffle next. Once again, it was just a folded up ok-tasting waffle. I love this place so much. I've visited quite a few times and have never been disappointed. They serve so many different types of filled waffles that I always have a hard time deciding which one to get. In the end, my favorite is the butter and powdered sugar. It's simple but it's divine. The people are friendly without being too peppy for a morning meal for us non-morning people. The coffee is even pretty good and I'm picky about my coffee. There was a pretty steady stream of customers, but our coffee and food was out promptly and hot! The Banana Nutter was so nummy! My bf enjoyed the savory TBH. A Waffle Cart -- doesn't that really say it all. You just walk up and order waffles and they make them fresh right there and then, but that's just the start. Then they have these amazing choices of 'toppings' which are really more like sandwich fillings. The vegetarian sausage with maple butter was so good that I immediately returned to Fort Collins and ordered maple butter from the Vermont Country store and made my parents send me one of their 3 million art deco old waffle makers that makes the thin (not belgian), round waffles. My girlfriend and I couldn't be happier with this latest addition to our breakfast choices. Well, we could be happier because we could have a Flavour Spot in Fort Collins, but until that day... we try to re-create them in our own home and tell all our friends about this place. Also, and this always gets my vote... the guy who owns the waffle cart/stand was actually there making waffles on one of our trips and he was so freaking nice! I love to support a business where I actually like the people who are owning/running the business. This place totally gets my vote! Note: This was not the easiest place in the world to find. People in Portland acted as if they had never heard of it and more so, why would anyone want to go to a stand and get waffles and be outside in the 'bad' weather, but they just don't know... and maybe it's better that way. read more

Veggie Sausage Waffle Sandwich is a must! However, don't go on a Sunday Afternoon. There was only a handful of orders taken before me, but I had to wait over 40 minutes after ordering to get my waffles. It looked like they were averaging about 1 waffle every 4 minutes. Loved this little food stand. During our visit we sampled the pork sausage waffle, the ham and cheddar, and the smore waffle with homemade marshmallow fluff (fat lyfe). For beverages we had the London Fog and the eggnog latte. You can get a very filling, fresh and quality meal (or snack if you're especially hungry) here for around $5-6. The waffle was great, moist and fluffy on the inside while retaining a fresh off the iron crispness on the outer surfaces. The fillings all did very well to complement the waffle, but I would agree with some of the other reviews that their (delicious) maple spread can overwhelm if you are the type of person to prefer savory to sweet. Next time I'll ask for it to be applied lightly. Again, this is personal preference. The smore waffle was pretty ridiculously rich and sweet, but that's to be expected considering it was nutella and marshmallow fluff. It's probably good that I don't live in the area or I'd probably turn into a sausage myself from eating here so much! Especially because the London Fog was really, really good. The Flavour Spot is the greatest combination coffee and waffle cart in the history of the universe. Seriously. Crisp on the outside, doughy on the inside, the waffles are golden perfection. This stand, in the Videorama parking lot on Lombard, it the hub of a secret society of NoPo hipsters. Even on a rainy/foggy morning you can find clusters of people with thick plastic rimmed glasses and cardigan sweaters. Stick to the sweet waffles- butter, powdered sugar. Maybe add a little cinnamon to mix things up. These go perfectly with a brewed coffee. There's nothing like it. My only criticism would be the hours of operation. They close pretty early (3:00 PM). What about the afternoon snack crowd? How about reopening in the evenings for dessert? Okay, another criticism: the people who work at the Flavour Spot aren't friendly. Don't get me wrong, they're nice enough. And boy do they know how to make a waffle. But not all of us speak the local dialect of coffee-waffle-hep-jive. Be patient with us! read more

I love seeing I'm not alone in my love for Flavour Spot but I cant believe some could be so hateful towards this gem of a cart. Ive been a loyal fan for a few years now and not once have the waffles been dry or service been bad. I think the people who are self proclaimed "foodies" need to realize this is a cart...if its good - you will have to wait, if its raining - you will get wet and if you put warm gooey stuff on a waffle the last couple bites will be soft or soggy. It is not a fancy coffee shop so if you are a coffee snob get your coffee elsewhere.The coffee is good but its about the waffle. The service is always great...not overly creepy nice and not rude..the perfect balance of to the point, quick and friendly. "The girl" a couple people mentioned has been one of the best...never rude always gracious and nice. The owner is always joyful and good to see too! Really the staff is overall excellent! I heart Flavour Spot and will continue to pop in weekly for my waffle fix! Try the Sweet Cream and Jam...its awesome! or the Ham and Cheese, but add some maple butter to it, off the hook good! read more

I tried sweet and savory waffles: ham & cheese and nutella & jam. Both are okay, delicious but nothing extraordinary. You will need to eat it quickly otherwise it will become soggy. I like nutella better, ham and cheese is too salty for my taste. Service is good, I only wait about 5 minutes and those guys are nice. I was super disappointed when they changed their maple butter and sausage from Jimmy Dean's to something else, and the new one smelled and tasted like wet dog. Genius! The really aren't words to describe how delicious these waffles are. They must be loaded with butter, but they are so perfectly crispy on the outside. I usually just get the butter and powdered sugar and a cup of coffee. This allows me to savor the glory of the waffle. I have been walking by the Flavour Spot for what seems like a lifetime. Everyday while I wait for the 4 I have to smell the sweetness that is surrounding this corner stop. So today I finally decided I wanted to taste for myself. Now this is pretty much a food cart that is surrounded by a chain link fence. They have quite a few picnic tables out that are under a canopy. I decided to play it safe and stick with a pb & j. creamy and raspberry, which according to the feller is an unusal selection. Apparently if you do cream you usually go strawberry and chunky means you go raspberry. Who else but a waffle maker would know these facts? I dunno. A short wait later my warm sweet waffle was ready. I would suggest that you take a friend and share one, because this was too much sweet for me, but it was delicious. I ate half of it, wrapped it up and ate the rest later. I don't know if I'll venture out to the sausage waffle but the girl behind me ordered it and I saw her mowing it down like..well whatever she was enjoying it. read more

Flavour Spot does its job as a good novelty food cart located off of Lombard in the Videorama parking lot. Whoever is in charge of the satellite cart at Lombard & Newman needs to have a chat with the young man who was working there this morning. I asked for a salt bagel with cream cheese and lox - not too far a stretch for a cart which has salt bagels and smoked salmon boldly advertised on it in big red letters. It was long after I had paid (and tipped) that I was told they had neither salt nor my second choice, sesame. Fine, I guess "plain" will do. When I get home, I discover that no smoked salmon was on my bagel. I return to the cart, and ask the man where my lox was. He responds that he doesn't know what lox is, and had a snotty attitude when telling me that. Seriously? A guy working at a bagel place doesn't know what lox is? And, if not, why the hell didn't he mention it at the time I ordered? I would have passed on the whole thing if I had known at the time I ordered that salt bagel with lox was unavailable. Tried the waffle sandwich today at the waffle cart on Mississippi and Fremont. My husband and I ordered two to share: the black forest ham and gouda, and the THB (Turkey, Havarti and Bacon).
