Out of three meals, two were horrible. The Tuna salad had extremely over cooked Tuna (almost to dry to eat), lettuce going bad. The spicy slaw tasted like the batch had been used for a couple days, slight taste of rotting food. Chicken and chorizo sandwich had dry chicken and no chipotle mayo, lettuce or tomato as per the menu. Instead of pepper jack cheese it appeared to be velveeta. Ordered beware!! read more

so it's been a while since i came, and i'm wondering why i haven't been back! first of all, the vibe at this place is just so cool. i think it was on one of those shows from the cooking network and that's what drew me to this place initially. i will say, it wasn't like OMG YALL HAVE TO TRY THIS PLACE IMMEDIATELY! but it was still pretty good! service was awesome and i love how "hip" this place is. it really does give you a relaxed vibe without compromising service. a couple friends and i got a few things off the menu, and honestly everything was great. i highly recommend getting their sweet potato fries! sweet, salty, and crispy! read more

I don't have many regrets in my life. Dating a guy who wore skinny jeans is one, getting a credit card when I was too young to know the consequences is another. A third would have to be the decision to eat at flip flops. The food was awful and terribly overpriced. They have obviously given up on trying to make delicious food and have just decided that barely edible was enough. I wouldn't recommend this place to a family of canines. My dad has been emailing me insisting I try this place since I moved here, and he was right! Came here with a bunch of friends after a beautiful beach day in Sandbridge and it was the perfect end to the perfect day :) service was quick and the food was great. $13 for 3 nicely portioned fish tacos is great in my book! I went for the BBQ fish tacos and would definitely get them again. My friend ate her side of mashed potatoes in what felt like 5 seconds, so I will have to try them myself next time! We read online that this place was on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, and so we absolutely had to stop in. The interior is fun and bright, though I prefer the spacious outdoor seating. The burgers were pretty good, with the pineapple burger being the family favorite. The real star for me was the sweet potato fries. As a huge advocate for regular potato fries, I am always apprehensive of the sweet potato alternative, but these fries are great! The perfect mix of sweet, savory, and fried goodness. My family made a special effort to visit here on a long trip because it was featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. We didn't realize it'd be so busy, and we're a big family, but the owner went out of his way to make space for us and quickly, too. Very grateful for that. The food was above average, but it seemed too costly for what it was. Service was ok but quite friendly, and the ambience was great--fit the theme just right. So, I have seen this place a couple of times and never thought anything of it. So I decided to try it and let me tell you I was not disappointed. Although a little small on the inside they do have some outside seating. The staff was nice and helpful. The place was clean, as we stopped in for a late lunch it was also not crowded at all. But enough of that. OMG. The food was great! Had the chorizo queso, which was not your average queso. Just enough heat to let you know. The curried corn and lobster bisque. Let me tell you, not the average bisque, there is actual pieces of lobster, which was a first for me of all the bisque so have had. But now for the tacos. So I did not realize this place had been on Diners Dives and Drive-thrus. Apparently they are known for the BBQ fish tacos, I heard they were good. I had the blackened tuna and you get your monies worth. It's a little pricey but the portions are filling and he flavor is fantastic. This will quickly become a regular in the rotation. I would have posted a picture of the tacos but they didn't last that long. The menu has a large variety and they have a full bar. A nice find in the Red Mill area. Will be back. read more

I'm only giving one star because I have to give something. Our friends had been here before and raved about the tuna cheesesteak and how great of an experience they had so we went back as a group this evening. We were seated promptly and asked for a menu and started to order drinks. The margarita on the drink menu is listed that it is made with vodka and our friend asked if they could make it with tequila instead. Innocent question. The waiter got an attitude and said "uhm yea? We have a full bar. I can do anything" in a very rude tone. We felt a little awkward but went on about things. I looked over to the bar and saw our waiter making fun of our friend for asking about the tequila with a bartender and another guy. We then asked to speak with the owner and it was him who our waiter was making fun of our friend with. I could not believe that an OWNER of an establishment would be gossiping and making fun of a customer RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM. The owner got defensive and rude. Laughed it off like it was no big deal, said "do you see how many people are here?" in a tone of voice that said it made no difference to him if we were there or not. Did not offer an apology, didn't offer to compensate our drinks, NOTHING. He laughed at us for being offended that the staff of an establishment was making fun of us. We asked for the check to pay for the drinks we had already received and left. I will say after working in customer service for years that I was appalled at the fact that they didn't offer to comp the check. I could not believe that not a single person apologized for the behavior of the staff. We will never go back to an establishment that the staff, management, and owner feels it's acceptable to poke fun at customers. This was unacceptable and I will NEVER say a good thing about this restaurant. read more

Okay...okay...at the risk of being branded a heretic by my fellow Yelpers, I tried out Flip Flops again. To be fair, I tried different items off the menu and they were all good. The corn and lobster bisque is as rich and satifying as any She-crab soup I have had (i.e not lacking in the butter and cream department). The grilled Tuna burger was seasoned and cooked perfectly. Just seared on the outside and juicy rare in the middle. There was just enough wasabi mayo to give it that added kick without being too gloopy. The sweet potato fries were awesome. I really came in with the intent of being as critical as possible. But after finishing my plate, I had to admit that I enjoyed what I had. The service was fine and the chef really knows what he is doing. The only constructive criticism I can offer towards the kitchen is to perhaps consider running specials on the weekends to allow your chef to stretch his talents a bit. The menu, while good, is not that big and you might run the risk of boring your chef to death not to mention your regulars if you don't keep things challenging. I was going to restore my original four star rating but in the end, a foul is still a foul at the cost of one star. I normally treat any business who uses Yelp or similar sites to anonymously review themselves like a nuclear waste dump. But Flip Flops has enough going for it to overcome an overzealous owner's clumsy attempt to advertise her business. They are no longer banished to the Sin Bin. I realize I will have to bring my shame shield to protect me from the glaring eyes of my fellow Yelpers once I actually manage to attend an unofficial Yelp event, which hopefully will be this month! read more

One of my friends - we'll call him Josh for sake of review - recently told me my entire business trip to Virginia Beach might as well be written off as a failure if I didn't go to Flip Flops. I don't know about you, but I took that as a fairly bold recommendation. A long-time resident, I'm fairly versed in VA Beach proper, but Flip Flops was new to me. That's because it's over in Red Mill - far removed from the tourist traffic at the beachfront. To me, this is a great choice for a location, because it ensures the locals keep this classy bistro for themselves. The menu is a fabulously nourishing spin on Caribbean. By that, I mean most of the plates are customizable with different proteins, the ingredients are fresh, and I didn't see a single entrée that had me thinking, "Ugh, it is going to hurt when I run this off tomorrow." It was all highly functional food. Purists (and any tourists who would stumble into here had it been located on the beachfront) would lazily declare it a bastardization of the genre. I would argue the style offered on this menu presents the natural evolution of delicious but horribly unhealthy food into a more logical format compatible with the needs of active people. And I offer as proof the two, yes count them TWO negative reviews are from out-of-town Guy Fieri groupies who I guess were expecting silver platters and chalices. For me, all that takes is a bottle of Longboard and some fresh steak tacos and I'm thrilled. But I also tried what would become one of my all-time favorite appetizers: warm flatbread with black bean hummus and honey tahini. Holy mother of Atlantis. This dip tasted like it was hand made by naked surfer chicks humming Suzanne Vega songs next to the fire on the beach. Seriously, I peeked into the kitchen I was so convinced (there were NO surfer girls in the kitchen oh god). Bottom line: Josh was right. I found my new go-to food spot in the 757. My boyfriend has been on a Diners, Drive-ins, & dives kick lately so we were searching some of the VB spots Guy has visited for lunch this past weekend. We picked Flip Flops because I love me some fish tacos. I enjoyed the beachy decor & $2.50 red stripe lights, but the food wasn't best I've had. I had the BBQ fish tacos, which were small & seemed to be more pico than fish. I was also a disappointed that for $13 they didn't include a side. My boyfriend ordered the jerk chicken wrap with a side of sweet potato fries. He said it was just ok. I love local spots, but nothing to write home about. read more

I like this place...stumbled upon in it a few weeks ago. I trek to VB fairly regularly and like to find places off the visitor trail. Thsi place is small but seems to have a local following. Lots of friendly banter at the bar....I thought the portions were just fine. Not huge like some pubs, but nomila...and priced well for what you get. The veggie nacho platter was gr8...fresh, with cripy nachos. Their guac was awesome. And as a soup lover,,,I have ot had any soup at FFs that I did not LOVE. The menu is limited....but I heard they are planning to expand space to expand everything...so we'll have to see. read more

I went there with my family a few weeks after they opened. The place is very cute, and I love all the nautical furnishings! I believe they were all created by local artists. The staff was very friendly, and recommended the watermelon gazpacho, which had my name all over it. It definitely sounded somewhat strange, but it was delicious. Pureed watermelon, diced cucumber, spices, chilled - delicious! We also got some mango salsa that tasted very fresh with huge chunks of mango. Most everyone I was with ordered burgers, and thoroughly enjoyed them! I ordered a spinach salad with goat cheese and a champagne vinaigrette. It was very tasty and fresh. I wouldn't order it as an entree next time, as it wasn't very big, and I found myself hungry after. Overall, it's a very cute place with an interesting menu, that also caters to those of you who don't feel like being adventurous. My husband and I had dinner outside at Flip Flops about a week ago. Small outside seating but very nice venue. Surrounded with shrubbery to give you privacy from the parking lot. The food was excellent and the wait staff was very in tune with everyone outside and took very good care of all of us. Definitely will go there again. Yes we came here because it was on DDD plus we are starting an 11 day vacation with the goal of trying new places we haven't been to before. Late lunch on a Saturday afternoon. We were seating promptly and greeted quickly by our waitress. The combination of specials and other menu choices made it tough to decide. We decided to go with a chorizo queso appetizer which was excellent. For entrees my wife got a chicken wrap, I had the steak fajita sandwich and my daughter had a burger. Everything came out very hot especially the tater tots ordered with 2 of the 3 entrees. The other entree had an excellent spicy slaw. All in all a super lunch. read more

Visited when they opened & was unimpressed with the boxy feel to the room and the "nautical" deco that looks like it was bought at the Navy Exchange. The menu back then wasn't memorable, and the service wasn't so great. But we went back after they were on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives on the Food Network. Did try some of the dishes and everything is very fresh, although a little bland. It probably would be a great beach bar, if it was at the beach, but instead you get a great view of the Home Depot and Target parking lots. I sat outside looking forward to trying something else on the menu and have a couple beers and a cigar, planning on making the patio a new spot to hang out with the guys a couple nights a week, with the weather getting warmer, rather than going to Buffalo Wild Wings or Keagans and spending our money at those places. Since it is a "dive," having Navy and Special Forces tributes displayed in the place, I asked the bartender and the manager if they allowed cigars outside, the prior week to my latest visit. I was told Yes. So joining the cigarette smokers on the patio, we lit up. Within minutes, we were not very amiably told we could not smoke cigars there. Now most of you would probably appreciate this and think its fine, but I find cigarettes offensive. I thought we finally had a good spot in this part of Va Beach to relax after a long day at work or after a game of golf, enjoying some good food and great company, but it's back to the BWW patio and their terrible food, Town Center, or the Hilton at the beach. Maybe Flip Flops is really a family restaurant with kids birthday parties and such, and not the Dive Guy Fieri was touting. Rather than prohibiting certain types, just ban all smoking and let us know before we sit down and order drinks (put up a sign or something). tl;dr, the dining area/bar is a spartan square store, the restaurant seems to cater to the Red Mill big-box store families of Va Beach, and the food is so-so. read more

Honestly, I really don't understand why so many people like this place. I will say that the atmosphere is good and the staff are always very attentive and friendly. But the food has never been anything to brag about. I also saw this on TripleD, but I've also been to quite a few of the restaurants on the show...and being on TV definitely doesn't equal quality product. Overall, I think this is a place where typical Virginia Beach residents (who are usually not very flavored and have limited scope for taste and quality; I'm a resident too, before you bash me on that) have ganged up with a few emails from the soccer mom club to Food Network and got the show to come out for it. The food is mediocre at best. There is far too much mango-like flavoring in everything. Carribbean food doesn't just require mango to be called "Carribbean." I think they have a few decent items, like the famed Fish Tacos, but they are still just normal VB food quality. So in the end...make a trip out so you can say "I was there." But you'll probably look elsewhere for food in the future, unless you're one of the soccer moms who thinks that Applebee's is a good "neighborhood grill." read more

Hands down the BEST fried fish tacos I've ever had!!!! So freaking good!! The fish was fresh, hot & crispy. The tortillas were set on the grill for a minute to get a little crunch. The flip flop sauce is just like awesomeness is your mouth. I don't know what the flip flop sauce is but I like it. The hot sauce that they bring out is really good! Just be careful it pours FAST! The sweet potato fries were cooked perfectly. They were so good. My friend had the shrimp and chicken burrito and that thing was HUGE! And my other friend had a po boy sand which. Needless to say everyone ate everything on their plates. Except me... I took home 1 of the 3 tacos for my handsome love to have. It was in my car for like 4 hours. And it was still good. He said it was the best fish taco he's ever had even after it sat in my car for 4 hours! ( he didn't know it was in my car that long shhhh) I'll be back! I am a huge fan of Flip-Flops! I consume a picky diet of only poultry and fish (meat products) and this place is right up my alley! Their menu is complete with options for every dietary restriction. Each time visit, their food is fresh, high quality and full of flavor. I really enjoy their house made mango salsa! It's to die for! Anything with Tuna is made to your standards and temperature. Their 'Jamaican' chicken sandwich is also one of my favorites. I love fruit mixed in with my main dishes. However; if you're more like my husband who would prefer a "real meat" between two slices of bread, you would be satisfied with their burger options too. Raised in Sandbridge I recently moved away & with everything growing in the Sandbridge/Red Mill area its always nice to try new places to eat. My brother went here while we were in town & told me it was a must stop for the Tuna sandwich & good beer list & a great patio.. He was right!! I got the Chips & Mango Salsa, Blackend Tuna Sandwitch and the food was amazing... Great flavor... fresh & to be honest better than just about any other Tuna Sandwich I have had in VB in the last 15 years... Pros: The Food network BBQ Fish tacos were flavorful and fresh. The service was efficient and nice. The setting is relaxing: you can seat inside or on the shaded patio. Cons: The BBW Fish tacos entree had only three small tacos. The size portion was too small. I was still truly hungry when I left the restaurant. A great place to eat with amazing food! I had an amazing T-bone steak with steamed broccoli and mashed potatoes, probably the best I have had in Virginia. The T-bone was perfectly cooked with a house home made steak sauce that was amazing. The atmosphere was great and the service was the best I have experienced in Virginia.
