A group of friends and I went to Flora over the weekend for my friend's birthday! First impression of the restaurant was that it was BEAUTIFUL!! It's not very big however all the tables seem to have plenty of room, the ceiling as you can see is decked out in the prettiest chandeliers. The dining room is all windows which at night was actually pretty magical with the live oaks on display. The bar area was back lit with a handful of seats as well. I will say, we went on a Friday night, we made reservations a week in advance and good thing we did because the only time slot available was 8:30pm which worked for us however keep that in mind! The service was great! They have purse hooks upon request which we all appreciated. All of the drinks were fantastic. I had a Mexican Martini and my friends all got one of the seasonal drinks. I then, got a Diablo (not pictured) which I liked even more. The salsa was very good in my opinion (be aware that it is warm salsa and not complementary). I know most people do not always like salsa served hot however, I have worked in an upscale Mexican restaurant and I have come to appreciate it..floras was very good! You do only get one small bowl of it at a time and you have to order it. The guacamole could've used some salt but was still very good! My friends all ordered the mole enchiladas and fried fish tacos as their entree and everyone loved their food. The milanesa was recommended to me by our server (I did ask!) and while it was not bad by any means it did not have as much flavor as I was wanting for this dinner which is why I gave 4 stars instead of 5 The star of the show was the black refried beans (the only beans they offer..I'm usually a charro bean girl) that we all had as a the side which I could've eaten a whole plate of alone..they were so flavorful and I will be thinking about them often! All in all Flora was great and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting a nice Mexican dinner. The best meal, cocktails, mock tails, view, service, we've had in Houston during our 2 week stay! We were blown away by how good the food was and especially the mocktails! They do all of their own juicing in house so it wasn't too sweet and just absolutely delicious. The food was out of this world good! We got 2 tostadas and ceviche and then the churros which were to die for. Sat out on the patio and enjoyed the weather. After dinner we walked just outside to the Bayou to watch the sunset. The patio is nice too, if it's sunny day, and you get a view of Buffalo Bayou. Drinks: - Gratify Smash (tequila reposado, ginger syrup, fresh squeezed lemon, basil): refreshing, great start to the meal - Ginger Mezcalita (mezcal, poblano chili liqueur, ginger syrup, pineapple cold pressed juice): has just a tad of a kick, which elevates this drink. - Flora marg (tequila blanco, lime juice, agave): can't go wrong with this classic. It's a solid marg. Food: - Garbanzos: they look spicy but are seasoned very well. Not too salty either. - Sopecitas: super tasty but also very filling, so beware if you're trying to taste different dishes! - Octopus: loved this! It was super tender. The sour cream was a great accompaniment. - Nopales salad: forgot to ask for dressing on the side, so it was a bit heavy. The last time I visited Flora was when it was called The Dunlavy, so it's been awhile! It's just as beautiful as I remembered. I love the sparkly chandeliers and center disco ball, the gorgeous nature views through the massive glass windows, and new to me, the nicely lit up bar. I also recalled thinking this would be such a breathtaking and intimate venue for a wedding, and it still is. What changed is the food in which it is now a Mexican cuisine. We ordered the carnitas, and while it was tasty, the pricey portion was rather small. You definitely pay for the ambiance and aesthetics. What you also pay for is the $9 valet parking since there isn't much free parking nearby. There is only about a 10-12 car parking lot that is free to the public, while the other spaces are blocked off with orange cones for valet. Unfortunately, as we were circling around for those open spots, we noticed the valet person parked cars in those free spaces whenever a patron left. We didn't have a chance to park there ourselves and were forced to use their valet service. In short, Flora is a stunning venue to host events, but not your everyday (or weekly) spot to dine at for me. read more

I would have given Flora 5 stars had we not had to wait 40 mins after the time we booked a 7:00pm reservation to be seated. Mind you, it was last night, the Saturday evening before Mothers Day, however we were not the only people who had reservations that had been waiting what seemed like FOREVER to be seated! I found flora to be meh, which is what I was told by a friend who had dined here before me. 'The drinks are better than the food' she said- I guess she was right. I didn't drink, I was observing dry January. I did have a mock tail, it was ok. My guest and I had a couple apps: the Guac and the octopus. Again, *shrug. The Ambiance - yes! I like that this restaurant is situated right in wooded area. It is surrounded by trees and a small pond, and all of the walls are glass. Sure it's pricey but worth it just for the ambiance! Definitely one of the nicest looking restaurants in Houston. Hubby had the street tacos which were fantastic, and I had the octopus and chorizo tostada. Both were smaller items so we had room for dessert as well - pot de caramel which had a great slightly burnt flavor, and the yummy bread pudding with ice cream. First time here since it changed from the Dunlavy. The decor is about the same, it's gorgeous with great outdoor views. They specialize in Mexico City cuisine that's organic and use high quality ingredients. Our food was delicious but I agree with others that it is a bit overpriced. I do think you're paying more for the atmosphere than the food. I had the tuna tostada $19 - the waitress warned me it was a small portion. It was really good and fresh tasting but not sure I would pay $19 for it again. My husband got the chicken adobado which was also tasty, the chicken was very juicy and well cooked and I loved the black refried beans that came with it. I was excited to go to Flora for a friends birthday lunch but also excited because I've been to The Dunlavy before Flora took over this location. There was a party of 10 of us reservation was at 2pm. We had to wait until we had 6 of us there to be seated. The waiting area is very small by the bar when there is a bunch of people waiting. It was packed! But around the time we were sitting the place opened up a bit and go less busy. First thing to know very small self parking, half the lot of for valet so self parking is by pure luck! There is valet for $5. I decided not to even try finding street parking and did valet. After we were seated we quickly ordered. The waitress was very friendly and fast. As a vegetarian there were not too many options! I asked the waitress her option for recommendations, she said there was one enchiladas two salads and all the sides. I'm not one to buy a salad at a restaurant but I wasn't feeling enchiladas. I ordered the quinoa lentil salad and was pleasantly surprised! It was seasoned very well! Tangy and filling too! I almost finished all of it. There's a lot of photo opportunities inside outside and outdoors. We were notified you can't bring a cake from outside indoors so we ended up going outside and downstairs for birthday cake. Bill was around $20 with tip so def overpriced for the size of the salad I got. I had a great time at this place when I went for lunch during the day. Christian, my server, was super friendly and attentive. The place looks amazing, with huge windows and elegant chandeliers. It feels like you're in a fancy treehouse. The Holiday drinks are awesome! I tried the Blitzen & Vixen, which is a whiskey drink with Stranahan's sherry cask, maple, black walnut bitters and cinnamon. It was delicious and warming. For food, I ordered the crispy pork belly bites with jalapeno slaw and red onions. They were crunchy and flavorful. Then I had the sizzling marinated skirt steak with beans, rice and house tortillas. The steak was tender and juicy, and the tortillas were fresh and soft. I enjoyed the view from the patio, where they have heated lamps to keep you cozy. This is one of the most romantic places I've seen in Houston and the food was incredible.It was a pleasure to chat with the GM Enrique today. He answered all my queries about the place and made me feel welcome. He was friendly and helpful throughout the conversation. Parking: It was easy to find with the signs leading to the restaurant. I rarely ever leave reviews, but after the experience my group and I had at Flora, I feel completely obligated to warn others before spending their money here. This was hands down one of the most unprofessional, chaotic, and downright disrespectful dining experiences I've ever encountered especially considering the amount of money we spent. Our group of 20 people reserved a dinner in the main lobby area with a $1,200 food and beverage minimum, which we not only met but exceeded. We ordered several dishes, multiple rounds of cocktails, and multiple bottles of champagne, so we were well above the required amount. Despite that, what should have been a smooth, celebratory evening turned into a total nightmare due to the restaurant's complete lack of organization, professionalism, and accountability. We were never told the policy about checks would not be split since we were a large party and that everything would go on one tab to meet our group minimum. But when it came time to pay, the servers ran came demanding everyone's tabs separately, completely ignoring the policy. That immediately caused confusion because each person paid individually, and after everyone's payment was processed, the staff came back claiming that there was still a remaining balance even though we were told that we had already met the minimum. At that point, several of us showed proof of payment, including receipts and transaction confirmations. Despite this, the manager came over and handled the situation in the most unprofessional and disrespectful way possible. Instead of calmly reviewing the payments or trying to understand where the error occurred, he accused our group of trying to "run out" on the tab, which was completely insulting and inappropriate. We were a large, well-dressed, respectful party who had paid, yet we were treated like criminals. Even after showing the manager all of our receipts and proof that everything was paid, he continued to argue, call us liars, and insist that we still owed money. It was humiliating, especially in front of other guests. The entire situation was not only unprofessional but also discriminatory in tone and treatment, as if our group wasn't worthy of the same respect other patrons were receiving. To make matters worse, after all the back and forth and despite showing evidence of payment, we were forced to pay another $600 just to end the ordeal and be allowed to leave peacefully. That was completely unacceptable, and it ruined what was supposed to be a special dinner for everyone involved. the management was untrained and disrespectful, and the service was chaotic and unorganized. This restaurant operates like it has no structure or integrity, and the way they treat customers, especially large groups, is appalling. I've dined at many upscale restaurants across the city and have never seen anything like this. For a place that pretends to offer a "fine dining experience," Flora completely failed on every level food quality, service, management, and customer respect. If you're considering dining here don't. Spend your money somewhere that actually values your business, respects its customers, and understands basic hospitality. read more

My Husband had reservations for my Birthday Dinner on a Sunday night and the ambiance of this place is beautiful with hanging Chandeliers and large windows overlooking Buffalo Bayou Park. We had a large party and the waiters were very accommodating and provided great service. For drinks we ordered two margaritas. The big vibe frozen Margarita which was good and the flora margarita which I felt was not mixed well. My opinion is the drinks weren't too special especially for the price. For appetizers we ordered the nachos and the sopecitos. For dinner I had a side of rice, the Pescado a la talla which was a fish cooked and seasoned with two flavors. As part of another quest for Houston restaurant week, my friend and I explored Flora. The restaurant is gorgeously placed in the center of greenery, so they have full points for optics. My friend made it before me, so I got quickly seated and greeted by our server, Alvaro. For starters, I had the sopecitos. I am not a cheese fan, but these appetizers were stunningly flavorful. For my main, I chose shrimp tacos. Let me tell you- I swear these are some of the best shrimp tacos I've had in Houston. The shrimp was PERFECTLY cooked and seasoned. I could eat 1932847282 of them. My drink was golden hour, which was pleasantly refreshing. I didn't love the options for cocktails, so I was super happy that the mocktail was extremely enjoyable. The only letdown here was dessert. I eagerly awaited tres leches, but Flora's take on it left something to be desired. I think the cinnamon and perhaps almond essence were so overpowering that the tres leches had a strong burnt flavor AND aftertaste. HOWEVER- my first two courses make Flora definitely worth returning! They offer valet and there are other parking spaces available. I look forward to returning in the future. read more

I absolutely love the Decour and the ambience, a Flora! The beautiful treehouse restaurant is covered in chandeliers and velvet furniture, which is absolutely to die for. We had the best server so service is a 10 IMB. I was a little bit disappointed with the amount of seasoning and flavor in the food but keep in mind I am from El Paso so I hold a whole different standard to any and all Mexican food. We ordered a variety of dishes and in true family form shared bites of everything. I wanted to ask for some salsa because my fish tacos weren't great. They were bland and a bit dry. The green enchilada sauce was flavorless and the mole was a'right but not worth the calories. My favorite was the seafood stew and having that in June in Texas says a lot!
