My family has been eating Florio's pizza since the 90s. I'm super excited when I came across them a few years ago and ordered some pizza to go and it was as delicious as I had always remembered it. My sister came in town and we decided to go grab some pizza like the good old days, but this time we went to dine in. I'll be honest, the interior was very weird, very cramped, and kind of felt like a school cafeteria. There was no music and you could just hear everyone talking and if anyone did anything loud the whole dining area would get a bit quiet. We ended up asking them to change our order to go. We got a Florio's special and a white pizza and both of them were delicious. The white pizza was light, we all had mixed feelings about the garlic, I felt it was fine, my sister and daughter liked it, my son felt the garlic was overwhelming. The special was absolutely special, it was delicious and flavorful and full of texture. Decades later, and they do not skip a beat in the flavor and quality of their pizzas. So I have been to several pizza spots in San Antonio, and there are some really really good places ( I have reviewed a few). Many claim they are NY Style pizzas (what I grew up on) and they come close...But Florio's!!! Is in my opinion authentic 100% NY style!! From the flavor of the cheese and sauce, to the dough and of course my favorite...THE CRUST!! We got the large pepperoni and we were not disappointed!! It took me back to my childhood!! The other NY thing about this pizzeria is they have garlic powder as an option for your pizza!! I have not found any NY style pizza spots that offer that!! The pizza has potential because they've got the sauce flavor down -- meatballs were seasoned well too. However, the dough was not good at all. As someone who grew up eating and making pizza, this is one of my fav parts of the food and as you can see by the puffy crust and floppy undercarriage, this pizza dough had little taste and was a bit soggy. Would recommend them to check the temp of the oven or look into their fermentation or something because I genuinely believe they have potential if they got this down. I will say that this is a nice spot with great potential and the tributes to remembering 9/11 are very heart felt! I wasn't impressed with the pizza or eggplant. Pizza was missing sauce - very dry and needed more sauce. I did really like the salad my preferred vinaigrette for sure but I also did not like that. You could see the guys in the kitchen, digging with our bare hands into these buckets of toppings that go on the pizza it kind of grossed me out and although it seems to possibly be the owner was very nice. New York style pizza commands a certain reverence even outside the Big Apple. So, being able to enjoy one in San Antonio fosters s degree of appreciation. I found Florios courtesy of a google search and had a craving for some good pizza. So, I decided to take the plunge on a Friday night! This place is situated conveniently close to the street at a small commericial suite and lot parking is available. When I walked in I immediately noticed the old school black and white tile flooring, which gave off a vibe of an ole fashioned pizzs parlor. There were plenty of NY references on display, which gave off an aura of legitimacy. It was pretty busy and there was a small wait, so I took a seat at the counter. An older man, presumably the owner, asked me what I wanted and I replied "two slices with mushrooms." In addition to pizza, they have subs and calzones. I wound up waiting roughly 25 minutes for my slices, which is the basis for the omission of a star; however, when they did arrive I was not disappointed. The crust was crisp and baked well, while the cheese and sauce were distributed evenly and not in excess. The pizza here is the real deal and the service is respectable, if not efficient. After submitting my original review below, I read a few of the one star reviews, and downgraded my original review to 1-star as well. Please read through them... It is now apparent where the terrible staff gets their attitudes. I've attached a screenshot. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I'm sure the pizza will be fine. However, we definitely won't be back, and here's why... The restaurant is difficult to find, especially if you park in the lot just off Broadway. It's actually located at the back of the building and there are three doors -- two of them locked and blocked inside with dirty trash cans, and no signage telling you where the actual entrance is located. Signage near the front of the building directing patrons to the back would be helpful. Once we made it into the restaurant to pick up our pizza that we had ordered online, the space itself is run-down and dirty and has an overall grubby feel to it. It also seemed the employees are more concerned with watching videos on their phones, rather than actually noticing when guests were waiting. We walked in to a virtually empty restaurant with one man as a cashier, and two cooks -- all in matching black and red uniforms; and one girl in zebra yoga pants standing behind the counter with her back turned toward the door, intently watching a video playing loudly on her phone. We stood within a foot of her for for several minutes without so much as a glance from her. When she finally paused and asked for the name on the order, she grabbed the pizza, tossed it onto the counter, then quickly grabbed her phone to resume her watch party. It felt like we were inconveniencing her, and she barely even looked in our direction, let alone said, "hello," or "how can I help you." It seems this restaurant has also succumbed to the new trend of terrible, indifferent customer service and employees who have jumped on the trend to "quietly quit" by doing as little work as possible, so they don't get fired. With so many competitive pizza places nearby we won't be back. At a pick up spot like this, we weren't expecting 5-star service, but basic, common courtesy is a must...especially considering I was expected to tip BEFORE actually receiving the pizza. The place of this pizzeria seems quite small when you enter., but when you enter you see another room with chairs and tables. I love pizza and it is one of my delights during a date night with my husband. This pizza has a variety of good quality ingredients. We ate Florio's Special, which includes: pepperoni, sausage, peppers & onions, mushrooms, black olives and extra cheese. The quantity of the ingredients was exact and it even seemed that the ingredients were placed in a very specific way to obtain an explosion of flavors in the mouth. Found this place from a posting on tiktok. So glad we found this place! I am from here (S.A. TX) so please east coast people do not come for me. I've never been to New York or New Jersey so I cannot compare to what I had here at Florio's Pizza to the east coast, however I will say I imagine this is what the pizza taste like in NY/NJ. The crust had perfect crispy edges. Ratio of cheese and pepperoni to sauce was perfect. We also ordered the cold Italian hero (I believe that is what the sub was called) which was huge and packed full of flavorful Italian meats. I saw that they do see pizza by the slice at a very reasonable price. We ordered a medium pepperoni and the Italian sub and was about $25. The "medium" pizza size was huge for just two people. I think you definitely get more bang for your buck here and the quality of the food is great. As far as some people on here complaining about the attitude or the service....must have been them because the people here were very nice and have a sense of humor. I will be a regular customer here so don't forget my name Florio's!!! Best NY style pizza I've had here in SA and I it is my understanding that they do get the dough from NY or NJ and the bread for the subs from Chicago. I found this place on a search for good pizza in San Antonio. My husband and I have very different preferences in pizza, he likes thick, cheesy, American style pizza, and I like Neapolitan style thin crusted artisanal pizza. NY style is one that we can agree on! Very pleased that we found a solid spot for NY style pizza, foldable slices and not too doughy. I would've liked a more flavorful and charged dough that longer fermentation and a wood fire oven would provide, but that's personal preference.
