Such a great place. Quick eats, location is great good summer food. Can't go wrong! Everything on the menu is a great choice.

Everything we ate was amazing, there is a reason this place is booked and over crowded.

    RI chowder

Lovely young lady working very busy takeout counter; bring your patience as line here is endless. Excited for RI chowder as I prefer clear broth. Tasty broth loaded with potatoes, but would have been nice to see more than 4 or so clam pieces. Ate it but definitely think they could do better. Positive note, fried platters other people were getting did look good.

This place is exactly what it claims to be - a clam shack. Focus is on fried seafood made fresh at fair prices. We ordered the smaller size of full-bellied clams and fried scallops. The plate of clams and fries that came out would have been more than enough for the 2 of us!! Soooo good! And the scallops were sea scallops - the big ones - not bay scallops which was a great surprise!! We ate outdoors by a giant shark statue. The place has a beach nautical look to it. Food was cooked fresh to order. Oh and they have a small parking lot. It's one block in away from the main beach road, kind of behind the restaurant.

Flo's Clam Shack hits the spot if you're craving classic New England seafood. The portions are huge, the food comes out hot and fresh, and the stuffed clams and oysters were definite highlights. Great seating upstairs, a good amount of ventilation. Nice sun room with a breeze. Everything had that just-out-of-the-fryer taste, and service was quick even with a crowd. Parking could be better, and we noticed a few younger staff weren't as helpful as they could've been. Some elderly guests had to go up and down the stairs for things that staff easily could have assisted with. Still, the food was solid, the seafood was fresh, and we'll be back for those stuffed clams alone. The crispy fries were also bomb. Maybe have a condiment station upstairs as well.

Food was solid, but the wait for our food was over 30 minutes. We understand that it can get busy in the summer time; however, it's much appreciated if staff informs us of the quantity of orders pending to give us a realistic idea of when we'll receive our food. Clam cakes had a good amount of clam chunks and had crispy edges and chewiness on the inside. Fish n chips was standard, nothing bad but nothing spectacular. Tartar sauce was fresh. Crab meat patty was good. Ambiance is standard for a clam shack, nothing fancy Takeout is recommended to avoid the wait!

Flo's is an iconic summer destination in Rhode Island. Located across from the Town Beach in Middletown, you get the benefit of the ocean breeze through the open windows of their ground floor dining room or second floor deck. There is a small dedicated parking lot behind the restaurant on Wave Avenue, but the spaces are not delineated and there are no marked handicap slots. You find a table in the dining area, put your order in at the outside counter, then pick it up at the inside counter. I ordered the clam strip roll platter with a canned soda. With the tax and a small tip, it came to $25. Since I use a cane, it would have been nice if someone helped me get my tray to my table, but I was left to struggle with it myself. The young staff was friendly, just not terribly aware. The portions were large and the clams had a nice, light crispy batter, although they were pretty greasy. I didn't eat the toasted hot dog bun they were served on. The coleslaw was a little peppery for my taste. And I don't care for battered fries, although these were okay with a good dousing of malt vinegar. I probably won't return.

Well they do not lie about their clams- fabulous! Scallops were amazing! Coleslaw was bad- rancid and they forgot to put my water I paid for in my take out.

Actually pretty great lunch option if you're visiting Newport. The actual town of Newport gets too packed during lunch hour and it an be impossible to find parking, so just drive over to Flo's. Portion sizes were big, the fish tasted fresh, great for families, quick service, and great combos. We ordered a mix of fish and chips, fish sandwiches, and shrimp and calamari to share. The cocktail sauce is also great for those of us who aren't the biggest fans of tartar sauce.

Not much has changed since our last visit in 2017 though I recently read that the restaurant changed hands in 2024. One thing that did not change is the clam cakes are light on clam flavor. In addition to the clam cakes, my wife and I each ordered Rhode Island clam chowdah (yeah I am originally from Rhody). Like the clam cakes, it was light on the flavor of clam though loaded with potatoes which made my wife happy as a "clam".

Great food. We got jumbo shrimp (have to go upstairs to the bar to order it) and fried clam strips. The clams were lightly fried. Not a huge fan of the slaw. Walk up order then sit at an open table. The bartender was so helpful showing my kids how to peel the shrimp!

    Dan C.

Clam chowder sucked. Very watery. I asked Chris the manager if this is normal since it was my first time there. He said yes they don't make it thick. I told him Anthony's, Iggys and Blount are all thick. Don't get the clam chowder. I believe this place is only in business because it is in a tourist area. Fries and fish and chips were extra oily. Clam cakes were good. Beer was good. Stuffed quahog looked like crap.

Somehow scored a 4:30 reso and from the second we walked in the energy was amazing. We were greeted at the door with so many smiles and the entire host team was so pleasant, not only to us but to everyone waiting. We met the GM Joe and you could immediately tell his team truly loves and respects him. He was running that front door like a soccer captain, greeting guests, helping his team, checking tables and keeping everything moving. We scored an amazing table on the patio overlooking the water and were greeted by Jennifer who was seriously the BEST. She walked us through the menu and pointed out some of the iconic and legendary dishes we needed to try. You could tell she knew the menu and genuinely loved the food she was describing. Right from the beginning she sold us on this beautiful raw tuna special, but obviously being in New England we needed oysters and some raw bar too. She recommended the grilled octopus to have in between our courses and told us we needed to try the chowders. Everything she recommended was spot on. Ohh and she told me I needed to try the Corporate Chefs Wife's own Hot Sauce!! It was so good! The cocktails were amazing and I finished with a mezcal cocktail that was an absolute A+. One of my favorite parts of the whole experience was honestly watching the hospitality and teamwork throughout the restaurant. Everyone was helping everyone. You can tell this place is really well run and that the people working there actually enjoy being there. Jennifer especially was just happy, genuine and so much fun to have taking care of us. Joe, Jennifer and the entire team, thank you for making one of my final end of summer meals in New England something I'll truly never forget. Amazing food, amazing view, great cocktails and even better hospitality. Can't wait to come back.

There is tons of seating but I highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time to avoid waiting. We were seated right away while other walk-ins waited for a table to open up. We started with some Rhode Island Oysters and I love that it has today's date on it along with where they got it and what the flavor profile is. The 3 I tried were slightly salty, briny, with varying (clean/mineral) finishes. They were super delicate yet rich in flavor. The Caviar Cones were a bit gimmicky; the crème fraiche overpowered the caviar but it practically melted in my mouth. We got the Lobster Shrimp Fritters aka Bag O' Donuts which I surprisingly liked although they are pretty batter-heavy. It paired well with the Castle Hill "Windward Weiss" Draft. This is a great dish to just have on the table for sharing. For entrees, we got the Warm Buttered Lobster Roll and Fish Sandwich. I absolutely loved this Fish Sandwich. Crispy, flaky, light. The shaved lettuce and pickles added some fresh crunch. My only suggestion would be to swap the kewpie mayo for tartar sauce. The Warm Buttered Lobster Roll had large, fresh pieces of lobster inside. The brioche was nicely toasted & buttered but I didn't care for the lettuce and the crispy onions were good for texture but felt out of place. All in all, really solid lunch!

However, if I don't feel that the ambience and nearby environment is suitable to spend anything -especially $200+ for a great meal, I request a change. Again, our anniversary weekend-they asked celebrating anything? And then led us to a 4-top in the back of restaurant, by a wait station (another pet peeve of mine with all the clattering of clean up etc), next to a table with a screaming baby. I have 3 children, but when out with my husband, I'd prefer not to be dealing with that nonsense during dinner (nor should a baby be out that late in a nice restaurant IMO) Alas, I immediately requested a different table. They were able to accommodate us at a 2-top, by a window that proved to be much better for us. (But why would they think we'd want the previous table and sadly you could hear the baby from the back at the hostess stand...So let's just march this couple toward the screaming baby in the back and hope they like it?) Bottom line-if it wasn't for the service from Carrigan, our server, and the VERY TASTY Oysters and Shrimp with an amazing broth, this experience wouldn't have been as enjoyable. Dinners were good-husband had swordfish, I had the Chilean Bass, but nothing special. I typically don't mind a high top, but will say that the uncomfortable chairs are difficult to push in and barely fit under the table. Overall, a nice dinner and experience. Oh and Carrigan, our server, did comp us dessert for our anniversary weekend. For the record, it's not that I expect anything for free, but when a restaurant app asks are you celebrating something when making the reservation, then make it be known to the staff or worthwhile. As most of you know, when celebrating a special occasion with or for someone, it's a royal pain to get up and discreetly ask the server for a dessert or special favor.

Every table and bar seat was packed so I highly recommend having a reservation or be prepared to wait a bit. The Romaine & Kale Caesar Salad with Chicken Milanese was genuinely tremendous. Such an elite combination from the freshness & creaminess of the salad to the crispiness and saltiness of the Chicken Milanese. Since we were sharing, they pre-split the portion for us which was a nice hassle-free experience. I could've honestly ended the meal here and been super content. I rarely see oven roasted pizza on the menu so we decided to try the Oven Roasted Chicken Grilled Pizza. The best part was actually the dough; it's thin enough where the roasted/grilled flavor comes through. The pesto and arugula were both good and paired well with the grilled chicken. The Tagliatelle was savory, earthy, and not overly creamy. The pasta itself was cooked just right. Since we were celebrating a birthday, I was so grateful that they offered us a complimentary slice of Limoncello Mascarpone Cake. It was so good! Moist, creamy, and not too sweet or citrusy. It was a pleasant bite to end the meal on. Great spot!

It was a BUSY Saturday night, we had no reservation, and the bar was packed... but divine timing somehow worked in our favor and two seats opened up right at the end of the bar. That's where we met Nick behind the bar, and honestly, he made the night. Nick was working the service well, taking care of a packed bar and banging out beautifully curated cocktails. I still don't know how he was that efficient while also taking the time to walk us through the entire menu. You could tell he genuinely took pride in the food he was describing and wanted us to experience it. I started with the Mezcal Negroni and from there we decided on a few small bites. First, the ricotta gnudi... perfectly fried and warm with just the right bite on the outside, then you break into this warm, soft little pillow of ricotta that was an absolute flavor bomb. Finished with freshly shaved Parmesan on top. I swear for a second I thought I was sitting somewhere on the water in Italy. Then the Scotch bonnet egg... WOW... truly every dish was just mind blowing ...all this dishes we ate....Nothing overpowered anything else. Every bite mattered. You could actually taste every layer and every little detail that went into all the dishes. Then came the beef tartare. Beautifully presented with the green crab purée in the center and crispy chips for that perfect crunch. Katie came over herself to explain the dish, and once you got everything together in one bite... absolute flavor explosion. Rich, bright, creamy, salty, crunchy. Everything on that plate had a purpose. We were also told we HAD to try the sweet corn agnolotti and THANK GOD we listened. Another complete flavor bomb. Absolutely amazing. It genuinely gives some of my favorite Italian restaurants in Beverly Hills El Baldi a run for their money. At this point Nick basically said, "Trust me," and asked if he could choose our next course. YES. PLEASE. Out came this gorgeous lamb sausage with fresh greens, snap peas, mint, dill, pickled vegetables and this beautiful creamy green sauce underneath. THAT DISH. The sausage was rich, perfectly cooked and packed with flavor, but all those fresh herbs, greens and acidity made the entire plate feel bright and balanced. Hearty and comforting while somehow still tasting fresh and light. Then Nick convinced us to put our trust in him one last time and let him choose dessert. He brought out the bread pudding and I am not exaggerating when I say it was the PERFECT ending to this entire food adventure. I literally had tears in my eyes. The food, the cocktails, the service, the salt water in the air, the smiles from the staff... everything just came together.....Nothing was pretentious. Everything was highly elevated while still having this incredible sense of warmth and comfort. It almost felt like being welcomed into someone's home and they just happened to be cooking some of the best food you've ever eaten. Huge shoutout to GM Katie and bartender Nick. Thank you both for giving us one of the most amazing and memorable dining experiences I've ever had. The restaurant was packed, and since we didn't have a reservation, we ended up sitting in the bar area. Honestly, that wasn't a bad thing--the views of the sunset and the wharf were beautiful. The drinks came out quickly, although my cocktail had way too much citrus. The oysters arrived next, and they were fresh and delicious, so we were all feeling pretty good about the meal and looking forward to our entrées. Unfortunately, that's where things went downhill. We waited an entire hour for our entrées to arrive, and the waitstaff wasn't very forthcoming with updates. We had to track someone down anytime we had a question or needed something, which became very frustrating. Once the food finally arrived, it was disappointing. Several of the dishes were extremely salty. I ordered the swordfish, which was slightly overcooked, and the vegetables were overwhelmingly acidic, as if an entire bottle of vinegar had been poured over them. They were also topped with a generous amount of capers, making the dish even saltier. Overall, it just wasn't enjoyable. I mentioned my concerns to our waitress, but unfortunately, she didn't seem particularly concerned. Hopefully, she passed the feedback along to the chef so some adjustments can be made. The beautiful waterfront setting and fresh oysters were definitely highlights which gained a star here but unfortunately, the long wait, lack of communication, and disappointing entrées overshadowed the experience.

We just had another fabulous dinner at Brick Alley Pub & Restaurant--our second time dining here…read moresince last fall, and it was just as wonderful as we remembered. We arrived a little early for our 4:00 p.m. reservation, and the place was already packed. While we waited by the bar, a very nice waitress took our drink order--a lemon drop martini, beautifully crafted, well-balanced, and pleasantly strong. We were seated shortly after and, of course, ordered another. (Both times, I took several sips before remembering to take a photo!) Our waitress, Mikela, was truly lovely--sincere, sweet, and very courteous. She was attentive throughout the meal without ever being intrusive, which made the experience feel relaxed and effortless. At the end, I told her I wished I could give her 6 stars, but Yelp only allows 5. For dinner, we both ordered the seared rare ahi tuna steak. I had mine with garlic bread, while my husband chose mashed potatoes. I also added the $9.95 salad buffet, which is such a great deal--you definitely won't leave hungry. I especially love their buffet-style salad bar, which offers nearly every option one could want. Both of our ahi tuna steaks were fantastic--fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. Once again, I dug into my tuna before remembering to take a photo! We finished the meal with a cheesecake to share--another delicious ending to a wonderful dinner. We're already planning our next visit--there are still so many dishes and drinks we'd love to try.

I loved everything about this restaurant except one thing, which I'll explain, and which caused 5…read morestars to become 4 stars (I wish I could just knock off a half star but that's not how it works, I guess): My next door neighbor Judi has a hobby of catching the Newport ferry from Providence, sometimes spending a few hours and coming back, or just staying on the boat and heading back, just so she can lean back in a seat and soak up the sun. Lately she'd been telling me about a chocolate martini from The Brick Alley Pub & Restaurant, and being the martini and chocolate fan that I am, I simply had to experience it. So I finally got a day when I could join her on a trip, and so we went there on Labor Day. Once there, we walked right in at 11:30 am, and were seated immediately. The interior is fun and interesting -- antique this and that, including a huge iron door that looks like it went to a furnace, and had embossed lettering, I believe it was Newport Highschool. Perhaps the restaurant location is where the HS coal room was originally??? Anyway, one the way to the table, the hostess said something about the soup and salad bar being over there to my right, and so I went to check it out, and once I took a gander inside the two soup containers, I grabbed a bowl of Portuguese Kale Soup and brought it to the table. Judi said "That's all you're gonna get?" And I said "Of course not, I'll grab some salad and maybe get a sandwich or something." "Oh" she said, and then got up to check out the soup and salad bar herself. Meanwhile as I'm slurping the delicious, heart y soup, loaded with chourico, potatoes, carrots, kale, beans, etc., I'm perusing the menu and I notice that it says that if you purchase a sandwich of $9 or more then you get the soup and salad bar for $10, and then the soup and salad bar alone was $18. Okay, so perhaps I just wasn't thinking about the world in which I now live that basically has you paying for the bread basket you might get served. But again, the hostess just basically slurred out something about the soup and salad bar and my brain heard that it was complimentary. I honestly have to wonder if that's part of the trick(?) to get you to go for it, and not realize that it's considered a meal in itself, and then you order a sandwich or whatever, and now you're paying twice the amount you thought you'd be paying, but hey, it's Newport and people are spending $40 on a stupid baseball cap. And so, you know, if you end up having to pay a bit too much at a restaurant, you don't make a scene, you just say "Yeah, I meant to do that". Okay, I'm trying not to be sardonic here, trying not to sound like one of those "everybody's out to get me" kind of folks, so I'll just shut up at this point, on this particular point. I just hope that the owners and/or managers will inform the hostess to be a bit more clear on what the soup and salad bar actually means. That'd be nice. So there was no way I was buying a sandwich to go along with the soup and salad bar -- I simply cannot eat as much as I did when I was in my 20's and couldn't gain a pound if I ate all day long. I was able to (slightly) save face once Judi went for the soup and salad bar herself and was satisfied with the freshness and deliciousness thereof. But the piece de resistance, the very reason we both came to this establishment in the first place ... the chocolate martini! So this martini looks nothing like you'd expect as clear as water. I believe it's got a vodka base, and then some creme de cocoa, and is showered in grated chocolate flakes. It was absolutely splendid! Nice and boozy without being overpowering, and the flavor was amazing. And then for some strange reason, Judi is looking at the dessert menu. She reads of a few of them, asking me if I'd like something like that. I keep saying "I'm pretty full Jude", but she was persistent. She especially was taken with the Ghirardelli Fudge Brownie with 4 Scoops of Vanilla Ice Cream. She said "What if we can get them to split it in half on two separate plates?" I said "Ohhhhkaayyyyy..." And our waitress said "Absolutely!" She came back with two large portions (see attached photo ... just remember, that's a picture of HALF of the dessert serving!). Oh my word! It was large and quite yummy. A nice, crunchy and soft brownie made with Ghirardelli chocolate, with plenty of walnuts therein, two lovely scoops of ice cream, all drizzled with chocolate sauce. A splendid way to cap it all off. So I'd go back again, just with the knowledge that it's EITHER the soup and salad bar OR a sammich, at least for a guy my age and size and appetite. But definitely for that lovely chocolate martini ... and maybe that fudge brownie to make it complete :)
