When I think of a restaurant that serves healthy food, Flower Child is one that often comes to mind. I appreciate how their food is made from scratch, and with healthy ingredients. They cater to different dietary lifestyles including omnivorous, keto, gluten free, vegetarian and vegan. If you prefer to try a variety of their food, then I recommend to pick a protein + 2 sides option. However, I chose to pick three sides (Mac and cheese, Brussel sprouts, sweet corn and quinoa) since I wasn't feeling the protein that day. My favorite out of the three sides has to be the sweet corn and quinoa with Greek yogurt. I am not a huge fan of Greek yogurt, but the way they made the sweet corn and quinoa reminds me of eating Mexican sweet corn (elote) but a much healthier option! I admittedly tried to search for Pinterest dupes but was unsuccessful unfortunately! The Mac and cheese was good but tasted even better because it was gluten free. However, I need to remind myself that gluten free does not equal carb free! The Brussel sprouts were good but a tad salty. read more

While I am on Del Mar this has been my go to spot when my tummy starts grumbling. Located right off the freeway in the FlowerHill shopping center sits this gorgeous restaurant. If your traveling you may recognize them as they have many locations throughout many different states. Known for using locally sourced ingredients while making their food in-house makes this a great place. With an abundance of parking, multiple patios and dinning areas you can keep your covid distance while eating healthy. If your not on a strict healthy kick they do make alcoholic sangria bottled to take home or to enjoy with your meal. The staff is always friendly, helpful and somehow navigate finding your table no matter where you are dining in this huge restaurant. Karina always has great advice on the menu and none of her favorites ever let me down. This time around I tried the avocado humus with their sweet corn, radish, clementine & pumpkin seed flat bread. This was appetizer to start with. For my entre I had the Bird is the word wrap made with local healthy ingredients grilled chicken, poblano peppers, broccoli, peppadew, melted pepper jack cheese, charred onion. Filled with perfectly cooked veggies and held together with their house made flat bread. This was a little messy to eat but with the side greens I was able to make a mini salad that was just as delicious. I washed each bite down with their seasonal sangria. Unsure on what flavor to get Karina let me try them both before settling on peach passion fruit. If your on the go they also bottle up their sangria to enjoy at home by the pool or at your leisure. This is one of my favorite restaurants! Their food is delicious and I always leave feeling full and heathy. One of my favorite item on the menu is the corn and quinoa... so tasty! I love the atmosphere, it is very hippie and laid back. And their art around the place is very beautiful and happy. All of the waiters are very nice and make sure you are happy. I wish I lived closer to Flower Child because it is amazing. I have to admit, I've only ever had one thing there (the Rebel wrap- grass-fed steak, charred onion, port salut cheese, arugula, horseradish yogurt) but that's because it is so dang good I can't bring myself to order anything else! Their menu is quite extensive and offers everything from pastries, to bowls, to salads & wraps so one of these days I promise to branch out and try something else. The place itself is very inviting and well decorated! They offer outdoor dining, and seating brother upstairs and downstairs. They have a cute kids corner area outside as well. They also offer curbside pick up which is cool because parking in that lot can often be tricky! The menu offers a handful of gluten free and vegan options, which is not a dealbreaker for me but great for some! When this regional chain decided to open a branch in Del Mar where Sea & Smoke used to be located, it seemed like a perfect fit given the plaza name was Flower Hill Promenade. Granted, Flower Child was a step down as a fast-casual restaurant compared to its more high-end predecessor. The owners had refurbished the interior to give the suite a more bohemian feel to match the bright, open cafe theme. The menu selections were not just for vegetarians. The main categories were comprised of bowls, entrees, salads, and wraps with three to six choices in each one. Although it's no longer served, the item I had picked was a Late Riser Bowl ($10.25). The ingredients were cage-free eggs, heirloom bean, quinoa, roasted chile, salsa, avocado, corn, greek yogurt, and queso blanco. The addition of chicken cost $5 more. Every component tasted fresh and healthy. I do have to say the portion size was smaller than I had expected for the price versus what some competitors around town have to offer. The place has been able to survive though. On Sunday through Thursday, all to-go orders placed online are discounted 35% when you create an account and use a special code at checkout. read more

The rose petal lemonade was light, but good. The Caesar salad was unique given it had avocado Caesar dressing. I will compliment them that they put what looked like a whole avocado in the salad. The chicken was moist and fresh and flavorful. I do feel like the dressing was too thick though, made it clumpy and hard to spread around. I wish it wasn't breadcrumbs and rather normal croutons. The Avocado Toast is hands-down the Best! The soft-boiled egg was cooked to perfection! ONLY thing that would elevate the flavors would be salted cherry tomatoes for a bit of an acidic flavor. I have never made it back and I could not remember the name of the restaurant. I knew it was flower some thing, but could not find it on yelp. We were in Del Mar last night and I said, "It's on the way up a hill after a marsh and I think I will recognize the shopping strip mall off the freeway and we can exit." This is the first, flagship location of Flower Child! I usually go to the one in Santa Monica because I live in LA, but I'm glad I was able to try the original location in Del Mar. It's fast casual, order-at-the-counter, healthy food with a colorful menu of bowls, wraps, salads, sides that make it easy and delicious to eat clean. It seems that the food here is even better than the other FC location I go to, as the food here seems extra fresh and with slightly larger portions at the same affordable prices (around $10 for most entrees). I was really blown away by the food, which has artful and healthy details that show the love and care they put into their recipes. I ordered the Thai Dye wrap and was pleasantly surprised that they don't just use a standard tortilla, but instead a flatbread with ancient grains in it that makes it much healthier. My dining companion ordered the Mediterranean Quinoa salad which had a zesty housemade dressing that was like a vinaigrette with hints of curry/herbal spices that really made it extra delicious. We also ordered the mac and cheese side, which is purposefully gluten free as it's made with rice pasta. I love how energized I felt after eating my food, not weighed down. I absolutely recommend getting a drink. For $3.50 you get a cup that you can fill and re-fill while in the eatery and you'll want to try all the different teas and lemonades. I fell in love with the drink station which offered 3 types of iced tea and 3 types of lemonade. Both options had sugar free options (no fake sugar, just not sweetened) and there were even two DETOX options, including a charcoal lemonade that was to die for! The cashier even asked if I wanted a glass or plastic cup, so I could take a full plastic cup to go after I was done eating! In addition to the healthy and delicious food, I love all the details around the dining room that clearly are planned with the customer's best interest. For example, they have a washing station that is separate from a bathroom so you can clean your hands before eating, without going all the way to the bathroom. There is a "yoga mat parking" bin at the front of the store. There is a wheelchair lift that goes down to the lower level dining area, and the lift is painted all over with a charming whimsical design that makes the wheelchair lift look beautiful, not just like a mechanical machine. There is also a hydration station outside the restaurant offering fresh fruit essenced water for people just passing by who aren't going inside! TIP: for the month of January they are doing a 2 for $20 dinner special on their bowls starting daily at 4PM. I absolutely love the (vegan) Taco Salad (and I am not a vegan), the Chicken Enchiladas, the Thai Dye wrap (I sub chicken for the tofu), the Chopped Vegetable Salad, and the Guacamole Hummus appetizer. Whenever I come here, I have a hard time deciding what to get. Allan at the register is super nice and efficient (and he has fabulous hair). The only thing that I tried that I was not a super fan of is the Grilled Chicken Yaki Noodles... they felt a little greasy to me. We have stopped in every year for the last four years we have come to the area for soccer tournament. Unfortunately this will be our last visit since my kids have graduated out from club soccer. The ginger salad was sooo salty nether one of us could eat it so I decided to go exchange for a soup and side of broccoli. This healthy chain is a popular one and deeply satisfies my need for greens, raw options and healthier choices when I'm in Del Mar. Every time I have gone there it's been for a lunch date with a pal so a popular spot for meet ups and lunch meetings. It's a nice choice for someone you may be meeting for business or getting to know, as they can accommodate almost every food allergy or sensitivity you may/or may not know about your dining partner. I like that there are a lot of seating options: Upstairs, downstairs and the lovely patio down and out back. Favorite menu items include: "FORBIDDEN" RICE: black pearl, red japonica, snap pea, bok choy, broccoli, carrot, onion, toasted sesame, red chili hoisin. (Insider tip: put an egg on it, trust me) CRUSHED AVOCADO TOAST: soft egg, black sesame, white cheddar. GINGER MISO CRUNCH SALAD: carrot zoodles, zucchini, red pepper, asian cabbage, mint, cashew, sesame seeds. I also really love the simple roasted broccoli with lemon, garlic, parmesan and bread crumbs. Flower Hill parking can be rough - and folks drive pretty nutty around the Whole foods. Our company had did a delivery purchase for one of our employee's birthdays, and hummus was provided...and I was in love. I ended up going to Flower Child primarily because I was just craving it so badly. I don't know what it was inside the simple hummus that just drew me there. Upon arriving, I swung right into a open spot across from the door to the restaurant. Very beautiful interior and exterior ambiance, I thought I was entering a tea party in a garden. Although Flower Child has a very cute restaurant name and aesthetic ambiance, the food was just ok. The tea/lemonade bar seemed promising, but lacked a lot of flavor. I even tried to mix and match the drinks, but it all ended up tasting more like plain lemonade than the added ingredient. As far as the main dishes, the steak was pretty good. I wish the broccoli and potatoes were more well-seasoned...the veggies here were quite boring, which surprised me as it has a lot of vegetarian options. However, the miso eggplant was delicious and probably the best part! Saw a lot of good reviews about the gluten-free cookies, but the taste was off for me.
