I come to the flying Fish Grill occasionally when I'm in the half Moon Bay Area. I usually come with either my wife, my daughter or my mother or some combination of those and we all find things we like on the menu. Myself personally, I like the crabby cheese bread, my wife she likes regular garlic bread, which they sometimes don't have but, I often get the Salmon BLT,and my daughter enjoys the salmon and my wife usually gets the fried prawns and occasionally she'll get the fried prawns! In addition, the service is actually really good! Twuy was our server and she is excellent!I t's quiet in there. We watch the soccer games while we were waiting No problem at all. We went here for a Monday night birthday party for my daughter on Memorial Day, and were so happy with our food and the service from our excellent server. The Food After a nice morning stroll around Half Moon Bay, we discovered Flying Fish Grill for lunch. It seems like a nice local restaurant with a variety of dishes. We ordered their Prawns Salad, Jambalaya, and Fish and Chips. The Prawns Salad was good, with an interesting orange blossom dressing. The Jambalaya was flavorful and the Fish and Chips were good as well. They also had a good variety of other dishes, but one can only eat so much, so next time. The Miscellaneous The restaurant is off one of the main roads with parking available in the rear. The exterior and interior have interesting design. It quite reflects a seaside restaurant with various decorations. The restaurant has plenty of seating inside and outside, along with a bar area. The staff and service was good. They seated us promptly, took our order when we were ready, and the food arrived in a reasonable time. Their menu has a good variety of items from sandwiches to salad, to tacos, among others. One of our biggest concerns when we discover a restaurant to be great, is that we're often fearful that the experience was a one off and subsequent meals will not meet the same standard. We ate here about 2.5 years ago, on a day that high temperature alerts topped every news broadcast. Our house is old and does not have air conditioning. We decided that day to escape the heat before it arrived. We left San Leandro for what we hoped would be a much cooler Half Moon Bay. We poked around here and there until we got hungry. Yelp is what led us here. That day, we sat outside, under an umbrella. There were a few dogs in the patio, and a very slight breeze. Service was great and the food was even better. I got the Clipper Combo and I swear, the Sea Scallops were about 1/2 my palm in size. They were HUGE! Fast forward to Sunday and it's now Dungeness Crab season. The boats are coming into Pillar Point and we went out with friends to meet them. There must have been at least a dozen boats offering freshly caught crab. Most of the ones we talked to were offering crab at $7.00 a pound. One wanted $8.00. We got our crab, put them in our ice chest and then scooted over to Flying Fish & Grill for another spectacular lunch. We arrived at about 11:45. Opening time was 11:30. There was no one sitting in the patio. Inside, we waited an odd minute before we were greeted and taken to a table. There were about three other tables in use. Menus were presented, water poured, and we were asked if we wanted more than water to drink. I asked one of the silliest questions ever. They had Seafood Cioppino (no crab) and Lazy Man's Crab Cioppino (topped with picked crab meat) on the menu. I asked if it might be possible to order the Seafood Cioppino and perhaps they could add a few crab legs? Nope, they don't offer whole fresh crab there. In Half Moon Bay. On the second week of Dungeness Crab Season. Pillar Point Harbor is 3 miles away. I semi-seriously offered to bring in one of the live crabs waiting for me in my cooler, in my van, in their parking lot. The server laughed and walked away. We ordered: Bowls (x2) of Clam Chowder - 2 - The broth was flavorful, but also quite thin. There were very few clams to be seen. I don't think they use bacon in their chowder as I didn't notice that smokey flavor that bacon often brings. Even the potatoes seemed sparse. Clipper Combo - 2 - The Cod was good; The Prawns were prepared well and had a nice snap. The Sea Scallops were apparently small enough that the kitchen gave me three instead of two. They did not equal the size or quality of the two I got last time. The Calamari was less than desirable, smaller and seemingly slightly overcooked. Not quite rubbery, but certainly darker. I'm guessing last time, I substituted Cole Slaw for French Fries. I forgot this time and ended up with some very soft and stubby fries, no crispness to be found anywhere. Mahi Mahi & Cod Tacos - 3 - She said that they were okay. The accompanying clumpy Rice and bland Beans earned a 2. Seafood Cioppino - 2 - We did not ask our guest how she scored her food. From the outward appearance, her facial expression and the fact that she didn't "lick" her bowl, it was less than adequate. I noticed that the broth itself was quite liquid instead of being thickened with tomatoes and tomato paste. Take a look at my picture below and you can see how much it sloshed around in the bowl before being put in front of her. It also looked quite greasy in an unappetizing way. Caesar Salad - 3 - This dish most resembled what was expected. It looked like a small Caesar Salad minus Anchovies with Boiled Egg, Grape Tomatoes, and Wedges of Lime(?) added in. Service was okay. We had to ask for drink refills. He maybe came back once to check on us. My wife felt that he was a mummler and found him difficult to understand. I seem to be going deaf, so I often have a hard time comprehending what people are saying if they're not looking directly at me and speaking clearly. Bottom line, my wife and I are amateur foodies. Our friends are professional foodies. They eat out and drink at a level that we can't afford to keep up with. That being said, none of us are food snobs. We know what we like, and we know what we don't. Unfortunately, this meal was lacking and did not meet our expectations. When we ate here before, I had taken a picture of the menu. One thing that I noticed, is that their prices have not gone up as much as many other establishments. It's a difficult dilemma for restaurant owners. Holding the prices down may attract new diners, but with increasing labor and food costs, that also means that your quality will probably suffer. Upon entering the establishment, our party was immediately struck by the pervasive odor of stale oil and dampness, which tainted the entire atmosphere. The decor and furnishings were significantly dated, and the flooring was a worn-out carpet that contributed to the unpleasant smell, moldy. The cleanliness of the restaurant was a primary concern. The menus were visibly dirty and sticky to the touch, a theme that extended to the table and the high chairs provided for our party. The high chairs were not only wobbly and old but were also sticky, and one had a broken safety belt. The bathroom facilities were equally neglected, cramped, and in horrible poor condition. Service throughout the meal was inattentive and lacking basic customer care. After being seated, our server placed menus on the table and left without a word. Five minutes later, she returned to take our order without offering drinks or asking if we had questions. The check-in during our meal was brief and dismissive, with the server turning away before we could respond, indicating a general lack of concern for our experience. The food, which arrived with surprising speed, within all 5 mins, was a notable disappointment. The "Cheesy Garlic Bread" was overpriced at $11.50 for six pieces of bread smaller than the dinner knife, which was for 5 people. The server never advised us to get another or what not. The fish and chips were excessively greasy, served on chipped, outdated plates. The portion of fries was sparse, and the coleslaw tasted old and lacked freshness. A lemon-flavored tartar sauce was also served, which did not complement the dish. We left the majority of our food uneaten and departed without a word from the staff, not good bye greeting or anything. The experience was made worse by the lingering smell of fried oil that clung to our clothes after we left. This establishment demonstrates a significant need for improvement in cleanliness, service, and food quality. It does not provide a welcoming environment or a product worthy of the price, and would not recommend it AT ALL. They should honestly shut their doors and stop taking peoples money for crappy atmosphere, shitty service and horribly greasy food. read more

This was once our favorite place to eat when we vacationed in Northern California. Well let me just say that it has gone way down hill. The food quality has decreased over the years. They previously had Tomahawk and Ribeye steaks. Now it is a simple New York strip that is not that good. The potatoes were not that good and the rice was dry. My wife's Bloody Mary was good, but the celery they put in it was so big you could get a full meal out of it. The waitress was hardly around, and that was a shame because during the time that we were eating the Chef quit. Orders were coming out slow, other customers were getting upset and ready to leave. They might be understaffed and when it gets really busy, it's difficult to get someone attention. But once the food comes, all I want is to be left alone so there's that too. They have a good size parking lot, and a pretty spacious indoor seating, along with a decent sized outdoor seating area. The outdoor fence has a bamboo art painted all around and it's gorgeous, but kind of odd considering the theme/cuisine served. The bathroom stalls are TINY AF, like your knees up against the door basically, type of tiny. Calamari (appetizer) - 10/10 I love fried calamari and this one hit the spot. The calamari was so fresh and tender, and the batter on this perfectly crispy and seasoned. I love that they mix in a few pieces of fried bell pepper too as it gives the dish a little more "health" and color. They served this with a jalapeno aioli that was so creamy good. It's not spicy at all so don't be scared of the dip! Really good size for 3-4 to share without feeling overly heavy. Clam Chowder (bowl) - 6/10 They serve this with some oyster crackers on the side, and you have the option of cup, bowl or bread bowl. We opted for a regular bowl since we weren't super hungry and the bowl it came in was average size. There were a decent amount of clams but the chowder was barely hot when it came out. We did ask for extra small bowls and spoons so we could all have a couple bites and they were prompt about bringing those out to us, so that was nice. It's a decent chowder but I wouldn't come out of my way for this. Fish and Chips (3 piece) - The batter on the fish was light but the fish itself was flakey, yet kinda dry. It also had no salt at all. The chips aka fries here are steak fries, which if you ask anyone, sits right down there with crinkle fries in the hierarchy. The fries were salted enough, but just so potatoey and not in a good way. It says this platter comes with fries or cole slaw but they brought out both, and the saving grace of the dish happened to be the cole slaw, go figure. Their slaw looks super over dressed but it works with the rest of the dish. There are dried cranberries and pineapples mixed in, which I've never had in a cole slaw, but I loved the sweetness the slaw offered. Paired even better with the chicken club sandwich. Crabby Garlic Bread - 8/10 This was good but it's a really small serving size. Meant for one maybe two people max. You can really taste the garlic butter and the cheese, and the sweetness of the crab was a nice addition on top. Is it worth the $20 though? Not really, but if you got it like that, then yes. Chicken Club - 8/10 We ordered this because my sister does not eat seafood. Ironically, this was my fav item of the day. The bread was golden and buttery, the chicken hot and juicy, and the caramelized onions were just chef's kiss. They were light on the BBQ sauce and I think the sandwich could have done with a little more sauce on top or on the side, but the bacon on this club really brought things together. I had a genius idea to pair this with some cole slaw and lemme tell you, that was the perfect bite. Served with the trash steak fries on the side, but you do have the option to pair this with a salad or cole slaw. I'm a seafood girl but this sandwich ended up being better than the other items we ordered. The food is alright, but probably would not be a go to spot if I was in the area. Funny enough the dishes we came for, ended up being the ones that fell short, but I'm glad we did find some highlights. The fries in the other hand was great & the coleslaw had the right ratio of vinegar to mayo. Jambalaya- generous portion with 2 crispy buttery slices of bread. I didn't try this, but it looked very hearty. Chicken Club Sandwich- nice thick cuts of chicken breaded & fried to a golden crisp topped with BBQ sauce & bacon. Furthermore, I grew up in this area and know what some of these staples should look like when they are served. My husband and I were in Half Moon Bay for the New Years weekend and we ventured into town off our resort's property for more low key seafood. This was one place we ended up due to Yelp. Nothing here impressed me much. That goes for the service - that goes for the hand sanitizer stations that all need to be stocked ( or taken away ?). That goes for the soda I ordered and said it was flat so I could be given another and checked on 10 minutes later .. and yes,, it was still flat because you simply gave me another glass when the carbonation needed to be added. My husband and I ordered clam chowder, it was super watery and tasteless so we added Cholula to get it correct. His Crab Melt was made with American Cheese ... that's so sacrilegious and not what it says on the menu when it stated 'cheddar' and just yuck. I did like my Crab / Shrimp Louis which at least had enough crab and shrimp on it.But the Louis was bottled 1000 Island served in a plastic little container on the side for a nearly $25 salad -- it's so much better when the dressing is home made. Furthermore all Louis Salads have egg and come with a sourdough roll in any Bay Area restaurant that ever serves it.. so I asked for a sourdough roll. I was told there was 'No way to do that because the bread is sold at $6.00 a basket' .. That must be some super special bread at $6.00! So why isn't it that I could not get a roll or slice or two and you charge ( although since we ordered two clam chowders and a expensive salad you should have comp'd a piece of bread for this $150 lunch ) . $2? But you basically said you couldn't and you wouldn't. Flying Fish & Grill is really more of a 3.5 star establishment, but I just really couldn't overlook the non-existent service. What I mean when I say, "non-existent" is that they seat you, they bring you water, they take your order, then you wait... until they bring you food... and then eventually you'll flag someone down for everything else, including more water, some utensils, and when you're done and ready for the check. Essentially, the service is at such a minimal that I consider it rather non-existent, almost like a fast casual restaurant. The other issue I had was the furniture. While the furniture was cool, it's really not practical. The seats are rickety and felt like they were slanted and would break at anytime. The tables were made in such a way that you don't actually have leg room. It's just so peculiar, but it looks cool! As for the food, the food is good. The food is solid. We thoroughly enjoyed our Clam Chowder in a Bread Bowl, delicious. We enjoyed our Clipper Combo, very well made, we enjoyed the Seafood Cioppino, really hits the spot, and the Taco Plate. The poor lady whod been waiting looks surprised. I outright ask her, werent you here first? She said yes. Okay. Hostess/server comes back, and seats that nice lady, then seats us. We're all set in the back of the restaurant where the sir quality is worse than LA after a Mexican food Show Down. There is NO moving air, and its HOT. Whatever. Please feed me. Server lady takesnour orders, and then brings us our entrees. We remind her we ordered the cheesy crabby garlic crap. Another gentleman brings it. And it is awful. Its ualf a french roll you get in a 6 pack at Safeway, and the crab on top of it tastes like catfood. What a waste. My hamburger was tasteless, but the fries were good with hella malt vinegar. My partners seafood...ensemble thing was okay, he said. The food was more basic than a pumpkin spice latte and uggs. The service was okay, but nothing supurb. The clipper combo has fried shrimp, scallops, cod, fried, and bell peppers (healthy ;P), and fries. The tarter sauce was delicious we washed for one more side of it. The chowder was also good, but got thinner over time. The crabby cheesy bread was okay by itself, but when we ate it with the chowder it was delicious! Highly recommend. What we ordered: + Clam chowder - really good, perfect consistency, with small chunks of potatoes and clams. + Crabby, cheesy garlic bread - Order this. It is so good. + Pacific wrap - salmon or fried shrimp wrapped in a spinach tortilla with rice. Comes with fries or coleslaw. Very good. + Fish & Chips - light fillet of fish in a crispy batter with fries. Their tartar sauce was tangy and went well with the fish. + Fish tacos - you can order 2, 3, or 4 tacos, and you can mix and match. I went with the mahi mahi taco and the coconut shrimp taco. We had the ciopino and halibut fish and chips. All delicious! Great service too. Casual ambiance.

Came here around 6PM on a Saturday evening and there were about six or seven other parties seated around us in the back facing the street, mostly older couples. The rest of the seemingly quite large restaurant looked and sounded empty. They don't bring water to you unless asked (we noticed after sitting for a bit and reading the small card stating this at our table). Upon scanning through the menu, everything seemed to be around/at least $20 per dish, including a lot of appetizer options. We opted for the Cheesy Garlic Bread ($11.50) after seeing how pricy our first choice of the Crabby Cheesy Garlic Bread was ($18.50). I thought the garlic bread was mid and not worth the price at all, given that it was just a small baguette slice with a bunch of cheese on it. I didn't get much of a garlic flavor and it was really quite tiny. I chose to get two solo tacos, one cod and the other Mahi Mahi, rather than a plate of 2 tacos because I didn't care for the rice and beans nor fries or salad that would come with a plate. Each taco solo was $7.30 so my meal totaled $14.60 instead of the $18.50 for a 2 taco plate. Looks like they recently raised their prices, as an uploaded menu photo from five months ago as well as their current website menu prices show that the plate used to be $17.50 and a taco solo $6.70. The tacos were just alright and had a solid amount of fish on each taco. My friend got the clam chowder bowl ($10.30) and thought it was good and filling, though the portion seemed small for the price to me. When it was time to get the bill, the waitress came over with a portable card scanner. The minimum pre-calculated tip was 18% and the default selected tip was 20%. It was a quick process as we tapped to pay and went with the default tip, but I still felt it was uncomfortable with the waitress looming directly over us. Overall, I felt the food was mediocre and unjustifiably pricy. I wouldn't return here, especially if I were looking for a nice fish taco by the water. read more

We had been wanting to go here for decades and finally went. It's a big restaurant and the service we had was excellent and fast. The food on the other hand was not great. Fries were good but crab melt didn't seem fresh. Again wait staff and service was great. read more
