Gumbo, red beans & rice, and jambalaya are my favorites! Was craving the sea, so we dove into Flying Fish. First time at this location, set up is similar to ours other locations. Daughter got the shrimp po boy wich was good, bread was good as well. The only negative thing I have to say is that I don't remember the shrimp cocktail being in that consistency they had at this location. First time here. You order at the counter and then take the food to your seat. Took me a while to read through the menu in front of the counter, fortunately was an early Friday afternoon no one was behind me yet. Had shrimp jambalaya and grilled zucchini/squash combo. So walking in this place looks like a place you'd find down on the coast somewhere - this isn't some fancy joint. The purpose of my going to the trouble of coming there was to buy a t-shirt for my old man friend's birthday. (Tomorrow). I hated to be there in the lunch crowd but I was on a tight schedule. My old man friend really like's the Flying Fish so I decided this shirt would be the ideal birthday gift for him. When I got to the register I told the worker that I wanted to buy a t-shirt. He said, "no. It would take 10 to 15 minutes to get one down off the wall." Then, he went on to the next customer in line. The small lady beside him said, "have a nice day, ma'am." I was flabbergasted! The man behind the register was so mean & gave me a flat out "no!" The small Hispanic woman kind of acted like "get outa here." When I had gone to so much trouble to get there! Man, this place has gone downhill. It used to be my favorite, but I don't think I'll be coming back. I'll start with the fact that they seem to think fish should be cooked "well done". I don't know who is training or supervising the cooks but I've had to send my fish back the last 3 times I've been there due to the fish resembling cardboard. The do-overs weren't much better but at least I didn't feel like I was going to choke. Also, they can't seem to get appetizers out before the main course. After the first couple of times we started asking that they be done first, and it still doesn't happen. Or if it does, I take the app to the table and then the pager goes off for the mains. Really? Tonight not only was the fish dry and overcooked, but the coleslaw was dry too. And the fried jalapeños were about half little balls of fried cornmeal crumbs. Don't get the oysters on the half shell! Went on Sunday and saw that they had 75 cent oysters. Popped in and ordered a dozen plus a bbq shrimp po boy and the lady got the grilled trout. The oysters were a mess and completely torn up. I took my picture of them to my fish monger and he told me that they must have been preshucked and stored for a long time, maybe even frozen. Half of the oyster shells didnt even have any meat on them. The ones that did were very disappointing snd we feared food poisioning which thankfully did not happen. The bbq shrimp poboy was under whelming. Like five 40/60 ct p&d shrimp with little flavor and too much bread. French fries were ok though. The trout was oily, fishy, and completely unseasoned. Trout is usually such a clean mild fish. I've had better at a cafeteria that held no claims to good seafood. They did have a great assortment of hot sauces and condiments at every table and the beer was ice cold. Overall restaurant isn't bad, but Jesus the way they keep the soups is so incredibly stupid. The soup warmer bowls are lined with something like seran or plastic wrap. I mean, I get they might be hard to clean or something like that, but seriously? What the hell are they trying to do? Make a plastic extract? I'm not crazy about this kind of stuff, I get restaurants gotta make use of plastic containers and utensils and stuff. But who with an intact brain decides to put paper thin plastic wrap (which MELTS at slightly above boiling) in contact for the entire damn day with hot metal and a greasy soup? I wouldn't be surprised if the wrap touching the heated part of the metal literally fucking melted! Well I just received my food as I Type and Apparently if you dont order here at the restaurant they like to give you food thats been sitting up. I placed my order around 2:45 and I was intrigued to know just how in the hell it was already cooked and on the way in less than 20 minutes. I didn't recieve any lemons which I love to have with almost any seafood espescially FRIED FISH. THE fish itself is not nasty at all but nowhere near fresh which kinda pisses me off. The fries on the other hand are actually cold. I guess this is what you have to deal with when you're stuck at work and have to use Delivery Services like Door Dash. Our group went there reluctantly, especially after passing so many "better" looking restaurants on our way there. And to a person we couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised! The food was terrific, with a variety of options to choose from. In fact, perhaps the only downside was the menu at Flying Fish was a bit overwhelming for a first time visitor.
