Our group went there reluctantly, especially after passing so many "better" looking restaurants on our way there. And to a person we couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised! The food was terrific, with a variety of options to choose from. In fact, perhaps the only downside was the menu at Flying Fish was a bit overwhelming for a first time visitor. First time for breakfast. Ordered Avocado Egg Sandwich (egg topped with cheese, avocado with mayo served on wheat bread). It's actually 2 eggs, same plastic "cheese" that McDonalds uses (disgusting)!, and much less than even a quarter avocado. Hashbrowns. Disappointing all way 'round. Eggs were burnt. Sent back. Hashbrowns had been sitting on warm part of grill for a long time. Pretty awful, dried out. Came on the lightest "wheat bread" I've ever seen. Was white. And not even toasted. Don't order this if you're expecting avocado toast with egg. It is not. And no stamp for your frequent flyer card. I think I'll stick to what they do best: fish & shellfish. read more

Very cool spot and highly recommended for a chill station for some brews and chews. I had a plate of frog legs who must have been part of the NFL (National Frog League), as they were freakishly huge and meaty. Battered instead of grilled but very fall-of-the-bone tender. The slaw was good and the hush puppies were great. Washed it down with a bottle of Franconia Wheat and was tempted to hang out in the covered porch for the rest of the afternoon. I really enjoyed coming here with Paul H. We shared the grilled rainbow trout, fried catfish basket, and key lime pie. The trout was really moist but I think I enjoyed the catfish more. I love a light cornmeal breading when it comes to catfish. I don't eat it often, when I do, Flying fish's version is my favorite. The key lime was surprising great here. It was tangy and sweet, exactly how a key lime pie should be. :) At the register, they sell flavored crickets. You guys should really shell out 2 bucks and give them a try. Holy crap- I must have gone to this place at their absolute worst. I'd not been for several years, and returned last Sunday with feelings of nostalgia about fine memories of oysters on the shell and fried catfish from several years ago, when I used to eat here frequently. This was my experience: - 12 oysters on the shell: all 12 oysters were tiny, shriveled and dry-ish, like they'd been shucked, forgotten, and jammed in the walk-in frig a day or two prior to my order. Nasty :( - fried catfish: small, limp, and soggy little planks. I don't know how one screws up a fried catfish fillet so badly, without soaking it in water between the grease and the basket. El grosso :( Compared to my neighborhood seafood joints (Aw Shucks on Mockingbird, and sista joint Big Shucks on Greenville), Flying Fish was just horrific. Perhaps I caught them on an off day, but to strike out so badly on oysters on the shell and fried catfish on the same visit to me tells me that this place is now just bad- "inconsistent" if I'm feeling generous (assuming that is it not always as bad as I experienced, based on reading these other reviews). If you're jonesing for some pristine oysters on the shell or hot, juicy, crispy fried catfish, then drive 10 minutes east and south to Big Shucks or Aw Shucks in East Dallas, and you will enjoy a far more pleasant culinary experience, thanks in large part to supremely fresh and expertly prepared food, all for a better price than our friends at the Flying (now sinking) Fish. read more

I used to always go to the Flying Fish in Fort Worth when I was a TCU student, and I do feel like that location is a litttttle bit tastier, although the recipes are almost identical. You walk to the back counter to order, the menu is pretty simple, but everything is tasty. Although bad for you, I'm partial to the fried fish. Make it 'snappy' to get it spicy. It's not actually spicy, just a little extra flavor seasoned on! The gumbo is to die for, with tons of a chunks and a thick, dark roux. It's some of my very favorite gumbo. If you're looking for healthier, the grilled fish plates with grilled veggies and rice are also very tasty. You really can't go wrong here. I stumbled on the Flying Fish while driving around the toney Highland Park/University Park-SMU neighborhoods just north of downtown Dallas. The front of the restaurant is open to the street which draws in passers-by to peer inside. What I saw was a classic, no-frills fish-house...not fancy digs but full of regulars enjoying everything from southern catfish filets to deep fried gulf shrimp to crawfish with hush puppies. You just don't run into places like this up north, so I had to jump in during my short visit to Texas. I chose the grilled catfish fillet which came with down-home beans and rice as well as roasted zucchini slices...an odd combo I thought but somehow it worked famously. The atmosphere was unique as well with a walk-up line to place your order from a huge menu suspended on the wall above the kitchen. Had to grab a cold Modelo Especial to enhance my meal. Living in the north, I hadn't had catfish for decades. Grilled on what may have been hickory coals, the fish and all the trimmings were delish! Ordered the salmon tacos, picked it up, took it home, tasted the Cole slaw before filling my taco shells and it tasted spoiled. The coleslaw was warm. I noticed that when we picked up our order, all the to-go orders were packaged and on a shelf against the wall across from the take-out counter. Makes you wonder if that part of the restaurant was too warm. Food needs to be a certain temperature for service. I just hope the health inspector doesn't find out and shut this place down. My first time there I had a crawfish po-boy and fries. The po-boy was basically a sandwich with a huge hunk of lettuce and some tartar sauce and some breaded fried crawfish thrown in there. The sandwich was tasteless. The crawfish had no seasoning save the breading and the pieces of lettuce were huge. The sandwich was pretty much not edible. The fries were really good though. The second time I went there I had the fried catfish basket. 2 pieces of catfish fillets and fries. That was a better choice. The only seasoning on the catfish was the breading so it was a little bland. For some reason what I have had so far does not contain seasoning. The fries and hush puppies are very good though. Parking was easy (free 3 hour is the garage across the st) and the scene was quiet when I arrived at 5:30. The food is killer! The menu's HUGE and will cater to everyone. They have it grilled, fried, broiled, bbq'd, between bread and on the side. I went with a dozen oysters on the half shell and bbq shrimp. Delicious!! Oysters were fresh and the cajun bbq sauce they smother on the shrimp is great! An ice-cold schooner of Miller light will only cost you $3.75. Service - You order from the window and seat yourself. The fish here is soooooo tasty. My boyfriend ordered the all-you-can-eat fried catfish (available on Wednesday only), and I ordered the garlic butter salmon filet. First thing is first, portions are VERY large, so make sure you're ready for it! The salmon was excellent. It was very well cooked, but still maintained its flavor and the butter was to die for. It came with charred veggies and rice with beans which I also enjoyed a lot. The fried catfish was great, and the refills came promptly. He was very friendly and so professional. He provided great recommendations. When I made it home I ate and was very surprised by how good it tasted. In fact it tasted so good that I went back the very next day and ordered the exact same thing. (Grilled Snapper with Cajun Spice) Edger and his team was there to greet me again. It was such a nice experience. I am extremely big on service. Now days I find that many restaurants lack service which is very unfortunate. We were craving seafood and gave this place a try. We lucked out and arrived right before it got crowded. Staff was super friendly and I love the size and variety of the menu. You can even customize your own combo. When we arrived it was hardly crowded and when we got our food a huge crowd came in. Despite that, there was plenty of seating and I really like that about this place. The food was pretty good! We started with the calamari and I liked it a lot. Not chewy and didn't skimp us on portion. I had a shrimp and catfish combo and loved the catfish. The shrimp were huge and very tasty. The fries were the most disappointing of all. They seemed like plain regular frozen fries and I think a place like this should have hand made fresh fries. My boyfriend got a fried shrimp Po'boy. He said it was nothing special, but he loved the jumbo shrimp. He wasn't a huge fan of the hush puppies because they had bits of corn in them, but he's a picky eater. I really liked this place for its fast service, friendly staff, availability of all condiments and sides, kitschy decor, and bang for the buck. A few things I didn't love was how crowded the pick up area gets since it's so close to the drinks and condiments. It makes for walking by hands full of stuff difficult. Also, in general the night we were there people were a bit rude and reaching over each other and not being courteous. It was mostly an older crowd and a few families. In any case, we'll be back! Was thinking of heading to Nordstrom cafe with bestie after some serious shopping but saw 10 people walk into this spot, and they encouraged us to come in saying we won't regret it. I had the "Hog Wallow Fry combo" fried shrimp, oysters and catfish. With fries, hush puppies and coleslaw. I don't think I will do the fried oysters, though tasty, I just prefer the raw over fried. So raw oysters, boiled crab and shrimp for me next time. I like the Coppola wine in a can, very nice. I washed down my fried basket with the Pinot Grigio. They have beer and wine. No regrets, look forward to going back with more friends. Large seating area, very clean and cool with large tv screen and free WiFi. Very nice staff. Make sure you tip them at least 10% at a minimum, I'm in the service Industry so I generally tip 20% no matter what. Really nice alternative to AwShucks on Greenville.
