Reservations were easy to make and we were seated right away, which set a great tone. Meh. I was hoping to eat off the dinner menu, however, I went around 3 PM and they were going off the brunch menu. I got the chicken and waffle. It was okay. I'm going to start with the great. Service! Absolutely, terrific service. On point with timing, friendliness, and knowledge of the menu. Our guy was Jeremy and I can't say enough about his skills. More importantly, we went for the Cochon au Lait which was being advertised HEAVILY as a whole pig experience with sides and cocktail pairings for $100 a seat. Unfortunately, this was where the failure occurred. The cocktails were beautifully presented and a little sweet for my taste but good overall. The food was just Sad. The appetizers were an over-breaded, fried rib, a pathetic pig in a blanket and the super spicy jalapeño. The bacon wrapped jalapeño was cute, it had a little tail and an attempt at ears but the two we had were spicy enough to have just arrived directly from hades. The winner of the entire dinner were Bread and Butter pickles. Sides were Dolly Parton coleslaw (although advertised there was no Dolly Parton music going on)-I love some Dolly but she better stick to singing, this was mayo on cabbage. Collard Greens had no flavor, not properly cleaned-woody stems intact, and as my favorite side dish, I was truly disappointed to let them fester in their cup. Thirdly, there was the whatever that was pasta doodles salad, I couldn't touch that. But the PIG?! No, my friend. No crispy skin, smoked pork butt or shoulder, dried out, pulled pieces dumped over dirty rice without flavor. The cornbread was average but at least it did have jalapeños in it. We left the sides and hoped for a dessert miracle. Dessert was the largest serving with 3 triangles of banana bread standing up for presentation with bacon ice cream which I had high hopes for but again it did not deliver. The last cocktail pairing, I gave to my husband and I ordered a glass of Chardonnay. It was a French, been opened far too long, turning that deep, yellow, foreboding color and it too was left behind. Wow, our party of 3.5 people absolutely loved this restaurant! For starters, Fried Green Tomatoes, thinly sliced, crispy, thumbs up from everyone. The Vegan Mushroom Gumbo, wonderful flavors, not spicy. A large bowl served 3 of us easily. Continued with the Shrimp and Grits which our 1 yo also appreciated. The pasta was moderately spicy with some heat but all very good. The highlight was the Fried Chicken. Large pieces - Waiter suggested 3 thigh pieces for 3 adults. It was perfect. Chicken was crispy on the outside, super moist on the inside. Finished our dinner with Praline Bread Pudding with a scoop of Praline ice cream which was an awesome choice. The staff was all personable, provided excellent service. I ordered fried catfish (yes, for lack of something better) with crawfish etouffee on white rice @ around $39 and a side of greens w/cornbread @ $13. Price not a big deal if its worth it. I told the waitress I was in a bit of a hurry and she said ok, I'll let the chef know.. The restaurant wasn't full so no big deal, I thought. There was a 3 top already eating, a 2 top waiting for a friend, another 4 top that hadn't ordered, and a 3 top just receiving appetizers and drinks so i figure this wouldn't take long. Well 25 minutes later my food arrived. I told waitress I'd probably have to take most with me as the play would be starting soon. Sooooo, the food was extremely disappointing especially since I'm a Cajun boy and I cook Cajun very well, so well my friends and family recommended I cook for profit. Not bragging, just telling it like it is. The 2 catfish fillets were very hard from cornmeal and overcooked. They were sitting on a tablespoon of etouffee that was sitting on white rice. You will think you are in the French Quarter! We walked over from our lodging at The Madison and discovered this phenomenal Cajun/Creole paradise. I have rarely had such a consistently excellent dining experience, from cocktails to dessert. Highlights: perfectly mixed Sazerac and Vieux Carre; succulent Baby Gem salad with fried okra; gumbo du jour with smoked duck and complex flavors; Crab Carbonara; and the piece de resistance, soft shell crabs. We rarely order dessert but couldn't resist the bread pudding and stuffed beignets, again, prepared to perfection. I wanted to give this place a great review; however, the price point doesn't match the food. This place is waaaaaaay over priced for the food we got. I had the smash potatoes were from a frozen bag the weren't cooked good at all and a few stuck to the bottom of the pan. I asked for eggs over easy a chef should know what that is my eggs came out almost cooked. The sausage tasted like sage and they looked like they belonged on sliders and one small biscuit. That meal cost me $26.00 and when I asked for hot sauce it came but $2.00 showed up on the bill. My husband had chicken and a small waffle the size of his hand and his meal was also $26.00. Drinks $16 each. Wasn't impressed at all. Oysters 1 dozen $55.00 They weren't the high end oysters but I saw that and was okay with it because I love seafood and wanted it. The flavor was excellent no complaints. I've had better for less though.... Now the ambiance and the service aside of us waiting a long time for our meal for which they absolutely apologized for nothing about their kindness and attention to you lacked. Server was amazing so she did get a tip. I would say they are priced for the area but need to bring up the standard of food and add a little more for those prices. That smash skillet was $15 and chicken and kids waffle was $19.00. Drinks $8-9. We will not return to this Restaurant but I do wish them a long run and success. The service was a little slow considering the size. We went for an early dinner so there weren't many people there. Our server was very nice though. The food was ok. The bread basket featured a variety and was very good. It came out hot and had butter and jams. We also ordered the cajun rolls which were a special for the evening. These were good as well. I love duck personally so I was excited to try it here. It was ok so didn't blow me away. One of my friends ordered mac and cheese along with jambalaya. She didn't finish either and felt they were bland. The mac and cheese looked ok. One of the girls ordered the hummingbird (I think that's what it was called) cake. It looked really good. This is such a cute space with great food to match. My sisters and I came here for an early dinner on a Friday night. I'd encourage you to make a reservation unless you're dining solo or with a party of two. The service was outstanding! The hostess was very warm and welcoming and sat us straight away. Restaurant Beatrice is just a small jaunt off the beaten path, but more than worth the trip. We had a large group on the Saturday of St. Patrick's Day weekend and were surprised to see that it wasn't very busy. Our server was great, joked around with us and did a great job managing all of our orders. A lady that seemed to be a manager never said anything to us, but I saw her giving us dirty looks. We may have been loud, but we weren't being obnoxious. We were acting like adults who hadn't seen each other in years (in some cases). I'm going to ignore her for this review. Anyway, back to the food. My husband had the duck confit and I ordered the chicken & waffle (crispy). My husband isn't a huge fan of sweets and syrups, but he was still talking about the bite of my waffle with praline syrup the next evening. I would definitely return. The menu isn't large, but I'm thinking it's because they know what they do well and there's nothing wrong with that! The prices are a bit higher than you might expect, but again, worth it. He knew the menu and very detailed. We literally wanted to try EVERYTHING! We legit ordered a drink, appetizer, bread basket (which I highly recommend if it's on the menu), 3 different entrees to sample each and desserts. I'm so glad we did! What I loved the most was the head chef literally came from the back and greeted every single diner there. He even told us the story of the restaurant and it's cuisine inspiration. All of our food was amazing. The crab omelet was my least favorite as we didn't like the remoulade sauce but was still edible. The chicken and waffles...chefs kiss. The fish. Chefs kiss. The bread. The dessert which included bread pudding, strawberry shortcake and I can't remember the other cake...but chefs kiss. You get the point! I will do be back!! I got a text saying our table was ready an hour before our reservation. So that alone was already impressive. The staff was friendly and welcoming--a small place, so tables are close to each other. Great tasting cocktails. We quite enjoyed the oysters Beatrice, and we never had oysters like these before. For the entree, I had the Jambalaya Atchafalaya. As a regular in the Bishop Arts area it was nice to step off the beaten path and visit Beatrice. Walk in and your promptly greeted I started with the green gumbo. It's slightly spicy with flavor of the earth. It's almost like a collard green or some type of puréed greens stew with rice and pieces of boiled orange beets which lends to more earthiness in the dish. I won't get this it again. I think it makes for a good vegan soup but I need some chicken stock or bacon grease off in it. I ordered the fried chicken which was perfectly cooked and very juicy. (Ask for their house made smoked hot sauce or pepper sauce) My biscuit was cold, which kinda sucks. I also orderd the Mac and Cheese and Truffled potato cracklings. Mac and cheese is phenomenal but those red potatoes they deep fried and called cracklings was not it for me. They arrived in a pool of oil which was a bit off putting. The truffle salt was a nice addition but Nancy Reagan I'm just gonna say No 2 these next time. Plan on spending $50 per person maybe a little extra if you want more than one cocktail.
