I never write reviews. My food was so impressively bad I had to say something for the sake of future customers. I got the tilapia and a "fresh" corn on the cob over UberEats. The tilapia reaked when it got here and it was flavorless. I have tried fish places all around DFW and that was the worst fish I have ever had BY FAR. The corn on the cob I had to let my roommates try to see if I wasn't crazy. They both spit it out. It was mush and had liquid butter rolling around the bottom it was served in. We are college dudes. I love Flying Fish. This place has so much character to me, I can't get over it. It's just that old school, southern, gulf style accompanied with blues music. I love coming here and I always get great service when I do. So, you order and pick up your food from the counter. Very casual. I've honestly never been disappointed with the food here, but my all time favorite thing to order is their Po'Boy, either the fried catfish or fried oyster. Service - Counter Get it Yourself Food - 3 Stars Fish Stories on Walls - 5 Stars Parking - No Stars My wife and I had wondered about all the hype on this place, so since we were headed for the Montgomery Street Antique Mall, we stopped there for lunch. (Please see parking rating above). Miniscule parking lot, one way only, and no discernable street parking nearby. How does this place ever fill up? But fill up it did, couldn't hardly get through the door with people coming in and out. Everyone seemed happy with the place! We finally found a parking spot, and the line at the counter was not very long. However, the menu was long on fried fish and short on anything healthy. OK, fried fish it is! My wife took the shrimp poorboy, $8.00, I had a combo of fried shrimp (4) and catfish (2), $9.00. Both order came with fries. Being an autumnally nice day, we sat on a picnic table with hungry birds for company. I can't say they grabbed any of our food, they just sat on the wall and looked eager. I can't say the catfish was better than Tuckers or Catfish Sam. But it was pretty fair. The batter was heavy on the corn meal and light on the spices, especially any spicy or cajun flavors. The shrimp was butterflied to create more surface area for battering, but the result was a flatter, drier shrimp. I like my shrimp like I like my pillows - pleasingly plump. The fries were certainly OK, but not special. I also thought that everything needed more salt. But maybe that's just me. I tasted my wife's shrimp poorboy, and it had the same problem with the shrimp. Salt, pepper, spices - please! Then I found they had lots of spicy things on the table and even more condiments under the service counter. We experimented and came up with an acceptable tasting poorboy. So be warned. This is a do-it-yourself restaurant. There's no table service, no plates and you have to do-your-own spicing up the rather bland ingredients. We'll know that next time and maybe even bring some Slap Your Mama Cajun Spices with us. Don't forget to read some of the fish stories on the walls. But don't believe them, either. read more

I've been coming here since it opened in downtown Arlington. As with many chain restaurants this one, unfortunately, has gotten extremely complacent about their product and customer service. Last night we got two red snapper plates with 2 fillets each to take home. The red beans and rice were good (sometimes they forget to season them) and grilled veggies were ok. BUT the cook does not know how to cook fish. I know it's hard to believe but a fish restaurant has a cook who does not know the first thing about cooking fish. The first rule of preparing fish is to NOT cook it until it becomes a piece of rubber. I must say he was consistent though as all 4 fillets were rubberized and uneatable. A total waste of money. The picture below is the from the time before last when we ordered 2 combo baskets. That little thin white line is a catfish fillet hiding in the breading. After throwing out last nights fillets of rubber, I called the Manager. He said his name is Louis. I told him about the bouncy rubber fillets and all he had to say was, "OK thanks." No apology for ruining our dinner. No apology for needlessly killing fish only to have them ruined and thrown in the trash. This type of experience, a terribly disgusting product combined with a "I couldn't care less" managerial attitude is the ruin of many, many chains. We will not be back. You know a restaurant is good when every single parking spot is full. I had to park across the street. Their grilled plates are pretty filling, and "Make it Snappy" adds a nice kick. It comes with grilled veggies, and rice with beans. I don't normally comment on drinks but their lemonade (fresh squeezed & really lemon-y!) & sweet iced tea are good. The fried crawfish po-boy was decent, but definitely not a New Orleans po-boy. I didn't like their gumbo at first, but it grows on you. The salad with grilled "make it snappy" chicken alongside their jalapeno vinaigrette is spicy & really flavorful. This is probably the only place I've ever ordered salad as my entree before, and I'd get it again. After (finally) attending the Impressionists exhibit at the Kimbell this past weekend, when we walked out my stomach was rumbling. Coincidentally, it was lunchtime and having experienced enough culture for one day, hubby and I decided to head over to the Flying Fish for lunch. This was our first time there and what a hoot that place is! I think all the tacky fish decor is what really makes the place. Of course the restaurant is super-casual and very comfortable. You order and pay at the counter and they give you a buzzer to notify you when you can go pick up your food. Each table is set with 5 or 6 different types of hot sauce, a jar of horseradish, and a big roll of paper towels (and S&P, of course). We both ordered a grilled plate (can't handle too much fried food any more). I had the catfish and hubby had the trout. The grilled plates come with rice-n-beans and grilled veggies (which happened to be yellow and zucchini squash). OK, and we also shared an order of fried okra. Everything was tasty. They also have cold beer and frosty mugs. There's not really much in the way of 'service' since you do everything at the counter, but the guy who took our order was very friendly and helpful. I really couldn't decide whether to give this place a '4' or '5' rating. FF is where you go when you want to feed that seafood craving but you don't feel like getting dressed up and you don't want to make reservations. NO FRILLS. And Sunday is half off oysters so its like $6 and some change for a dozen. Always friendly people. Always friendly staff, the guys are sweet and even when you come in 10 minutes before closing, they don't hesitate to feed you. Our usual order is 2 dozen oysters (always fresh and plump), the fried catfish and fried shrimp combo with fries and hush puppies (SO GOOD!), and a couple of beers. Every other time we get their crawfish(they are the straight up boiled kind, not the 'covered in butter in spices' kind). They have beer and margaritas as well as some desserts like bread pudding to feed the sweet tooth. Great kitschy-fishy atmosphere. I love this place! read more

They use a cornmeal only batter and peanut oil for frying which resulted in everything crisp,no grease.We added a side of cole slaw. Flying Fish's secret is simple execution,freshest of seafood = dynamite taste. They use wild caught shrimp and farm raised catfish. Both were sumptuous golden fried . The cole slaw was freshly made as in when I ordered it,they said it would be 5 minutes. It was worth the wait , a slightly piquant slaw balanced perfectly with a nice tang of vinegar and sweetness.The hush puppies weren't an afterthought and worth mentioning to us that are hush hound fans. They have a nice varied menu which included , ceviche, gumbo, crawfish chowder and an extensive boiled and grilled seafood selection. The restaurant is an order first, grab a table later. They have a coaster buzzer to tell you when to pickup. Don't forget to get a couple of frosty cold goblets of Shiner Bock on tap. The decor is highlighted by tons of mounted fish , antique tackle boxes and monster huge hanging lures. Lots of famous and local angler photos on the walls. While we were waiting for Fred's Cafe to finish their brunch offerings, we headed to The Flying Fish to get a taste of what they have to offer. We started with some fried calamari - I loved it! I really liked the breading, though the bf didn't like it as much as I did. Came with ranch dressing and another kind of dressing that seemed to have a hint of curry - I definitely stuck with the ranch. Also split a catfish and fried shrimp basket. I had a couple of the shrimp - they were big, fat pieces with tasty battering. The hush puppies rocked! Fries were okay. This is a place where you order at the counter and get your food when your buzzer goes off. The snapper was dry and over cooked. The squash had been sitting out long enough that it was cold. We had rice and beans with three out of the four meals that we ordered. All of them had crusted over on the top because they had sat out for so long. The shrimp tacos had no slaw and the tiny shrimp that were fried were mostly breading, fried in catfish batter (ew) and were ice cold. Not just room temperature cold, but I bit into one and it felt like it has just left the refrigerator. The mahi was covered in so much seasoning that it was caked on and mostly just a salty mess. All of this after ordering a margarita that has a couple of layers of salt in the bottom that made it taste horrible. When I brought the shrimp back up to be remade, there was no apology, no "please go sit while you wait and we will bring it to you". Nothing. For $75, that was by far the worst meal I have ever had in Fort Worth. I wont step foot back through those doors. I don't mind paying extra for things. Someone else in our group had fried crawfish poor boy, gumbo and pickled green tomatoes, all of which also got great ratings. Love the light, cornmeal batter and the tartar sauce. I avoided most of the fried selections at Flying Fish on a day I was feeling healthy, so I can't vouch for the delicious smelling fried fish that most of the patrons devoured. However, I can say that their portions are big and their fish is fresh. My fiance ordered the red snapper platter, which came with two pieces of snapper and a generous helping of squash and rice/beans. My grouper salad was simple, with some hush puppies, lettuce, and the fish. I enjoyed the fried calamari (can't really go wrong with that), and the ceviche was not overly salty as some places can make it. Flying Fish is a solid place if you're feeling fish-y. read more

Love the atmosphere of this place! So laid back and fun. The decor is awesome and adds to the relaxed vibe. The menu is huge! We ordered baskets of catfish and shrimp, fried pickles, a blue moon on tap and some key lime pie. The fries were awesome, the shrimp were fresh and tasty. My fiancé said his catfish was "good, not great but good." I liked the seasoning on the fried pickles but bae didn't- oh well, I'll take his! :) my beer was cold and came in a big goblet type glass. Good thing my Louisiana born & raised mother's birthday dinner had to be fish! Eight family members ranging in age from 9 to 69 yrs left well fed & happy with money in pockets. I've been called a Cajun Food snob; guess Louisiana roots will out. There's nothing snobby about this place. I wouldn't call it strictly Cajun either. But they DO know their stuff when it comes to food familiar to those with affection for all things bayou. One true indication is the red beans and rice -- just right! Mom even liked hush puppies and cole slaw. The whole Snapper and Snapper fillet (both Vera Cruz option) were well seasoned and prepared. Unique whole Snapper plating even used perfectly cooked veggies arrangement to make it fun! Hubby's Shrimp Poor Boy was very good. Fried Calamari was lightly breaded and flavorful. Grilled Snapper is definitely in my plan for next time! Oh, and they have take-out too! The night we were there, I had an ice-cold beer in a giant fishbowl and a hushpuppy within minutes of entering. That's a good start to the night for me. Ultimately, I had a couple of pieces of fried fish along with a cup of gumbo. Everything was fresh and not fishy at all - a good sign. It was crowded and loud, but places like this really should be. The only con: The parking is really difficult. Watch out if you have kids with you so they don't get run over, but that's generally true anywhere. read more

The Flying Fish is a bright and shining gem of fresh southern-style seafood and cajun dishes at reasonable prices. The counter clerk even got my order wrong, but I was so pleased with what came out of the kitchen I had to keep it to myself. I can't believe I've lived in another part of the city this long and never eaten here. A must try for seafood, or cajun food lovers. A note on any of my top Fort Worth location reviews: I fundamentally believe that average food one finds here, the kind accessible by the average citizen is probably one of the least exciting of any major city in a 1000 mile radius. So when I find something of flavor and quality here we need to provide it ALL the attention it deserves. Let's not down play this, we all pride ourselves on the best southern soul food, backyard bbq ribs, and steaks as Fort Worth locals. And perhaps this is why dining out here is more for the "experience" than for the food, because far too few restaurants here provide the flavor of the Flying Fish and its a shame that there are so few "exceptions". read more

The location is very family oriented and a great place to bond with friends. The food proportions were reasonable. However, the prices were not reasonable. I had a Shrimp dinner and added a piece of Tilapia fish. The hush puppies were delicious, shrimp had a small amount of seasoning and tilapia as no seasoning. There is limited table service. Therefore, you are expected to go up to the counter to get any condiments, address food concerns or get refills. The restaurant is very spirited and decorated to reflect fish and seafood. A bit pricy compared to fish fries back home, but the shrimp po boy was very filling so you won't hear me complaining when I come back, because it's significantly better quality food. The service here is friendly, the ambiance is relaxing, the restaurant is clean. It's a nice, quiet place to talk and grab a bite to eat. They have hot sauce on the table, which I love. I always order the Salmon tacos! I've ordered them to-go and dine-in. When I've gotten them to-go, they come disassembled so that they don't get soggy as they are in a hard taco shell. They have like a sort of coleslaw mix, which I would normally not like but theirs is very good, then grilled salmon, and a slightly sweet sauce. They're served with rice and beans that are well seasoned, but of course I load them up with hot sauce. For ~$13 the portion of salmon is generous. I also really like their hush puppies. I love coming here on a cloudy day or a lazy Friday night for the relaxing ambiance and the good food. They have blue plaid table cloths, and fishing related knick knacks all over the walls. They have a well covered outside area with tables and the inside is decently sized. I really like it here! They also have a punch card so after so many visits you get something. I wouldn't know - I always lose my punch card... I wish they would switch to a digital program. But its really not a huge deal, the place does have a mom and pop kind of feel even, so I guess the punch card adds to that. You should check this place out! read more
