We were from out of town and in for the Cowboy Classic. We read reviews on Railhead BBQ and on Labor Day drove there from downtown to give it a try. Well, even though it showed open on Yelp....it was closed for the holiday We looked around and right across the street was the Flying Fish so we thought we would give it a try since we were already in the area. I have to say that I may be glad that Railhead was closed that day because we got to try something besides BBQ. The people were nice, the food came out quickly and it was everything you would hope for in a Southern Fried Fish Joint!!! I ordered a catfish fillet basket with two catfish in it and 4 shrimp the jumbo shrimp, first of all the shrimp was eight dollars, that us two dallars a piece. but they were so flat and had no taste I just couldn't believe it! Have you ever heard of seasoning? then the catfish it was good, nice taste but out of the two fish one was thick and the other one was very thin, so thin you had to look twice to see if there was anything between the batter and they charged me $8.49 for that so for lunch I spent a total of $17.85 and that was without a drink! WTH? I'm just going to say WOW! and the place was actually recommend to me! I'm not going to say DON'T GO, I'm just going to say good luck and hope your experience is better than mine! Flying Fish has a lot of rabid fans. To me, it seems over-hyped. The huge menu and high prices are similar to tourist traps on the Texas Coast. But unlike Snoopys or Gaidos, the food quality is pretty lame. The shrimp are flattened out so that not even a speck of moisture or flavor survives the deep fryer. The fries are not as good as McDonalds. It seems important to try to find something nice to say, and I guess the highlight here is friendly staff and good ice tea? Any place that has and knows what malt vinegar is for fish gets an A+ from me. I've been here twice and it's just as good, maybe even better than making your own fish. I had the catfish combo with 4 shrimp. They also have salads, crab legs, salmon, crawfish, etc. grilled and boiled. On my first visit, my pager didn't buzz and I waited a half hour before I got my meal, so they refunded me for what I paid. The second time, the wait was about 10-15 minutes so I guess that's the normal wait time, but it was worth it on both visits. They also serve alcohol if you wanted to know. read more

So we just left the flying fish for the first time. I will start by saying that we really thought the fried catfish was awesome!!!! Fried oysters..eh. Fried shrimp...eh. No flavor outside the corn meal batter. I specifically went to try the mud bugs......I've had better in my back yard. Let me explain. First of all they clearly don't purge them (full of poop) they were not prepared properly with the right amount of time resting in seasoning (extremely hard to peel) and lastly they had little to no flavor. All I've ever had here was lunch-shrimp and catfish, both fried. They were both ok, but I have had better. All in all, just kinda average, but I would like to try the redfish for dinner sometime, I have seen other people with it and it looks fantastic and fresh but I just can't force myself to eat that much at lunch. Nothing to write home about. Family of three tried this restaurant for the first time. Was excited about the price point, location in proximity to home and variety on the menu however this would not fit the description for a "creole/Cajun" style restaurant as my fiancé is from Louisiana and are quite fond and frequent seafood/Cajun restaurants in the DFW and have had better. We arrived right before a crowd of people to order... the order taker/cashier seemed to rush us with fast talk and responding with "anything else, is that it?" Lacked warmth and genuine appreciation for our business. Given this was our first time, typically a cashier or server asks "is this your first time here or do you have any questions about the menu?" so that they can help with menu suggestions and questions. We overlooked this as we were excited about the meal and brushed it off as "the cashier trying to move the line as fast as he could due to the number of walk ins immediately as we were ordering. For three people, tab of 80.00 (included two margaritas- not bad) the margaritas were basic frozen mix but overdone on the sweet and sour- was more of a lemon/lime slush than anything. You can get better House margaritas at Taco Cabana or Fuzzys tacos. The food- nice portion but everything lacked seasoning. Everything. Crawfish chowder was more like potato soup with lots of celery and heavy pepper with small bits of crawfish. I Love any type of clam/ seafood chowder and will order it anytime I see it on a menu but this recipe was a let down. The Trout was bland- even with tarter sauce it did not help at all. Fiancé had a sweet corn on the cob and it was good, daughter had a corn on the cob with her crab legs and the corn on the cob looked completely different and was sour- we all three tried it and agreed that something about it tasted and smelled spoiled. Maybe it was a off night as they were closing in a hour but as we all know- you only have one chance to make a great first impression. Loved the down home feel of the place and was not looking for "fine dining" and don't mind paying for good food but warm friendly service where you don't feel like a bother is where we will spend our money. We were truly hoping to make this one of our new places to go often but we took some of our food Togo (the roasted zucchini and squash was great) and will try to "doctor it up"' at home. Considering that we are on north central Texas its very good seafood/fish. The Mexican cocktail is very good and we get ours without lettuce (not sure who thought that up). My wife always gets the fried catfish and it's really good but I'm not that big on fried anything so I usually go with grilled fish or the BBQ shrimp which are also very good but pricey for what you get. Overall it's a great place and a great experience for a decent price. For a family of four, you should get out of there for under $100 read more

This is a favorite family stop whenever we're in Ft. Worth. I've been at all times of day and the place is always hoppin'. Our favorite is the fried catfish - always fresh. I've had the fried shrimp/catfish combo a couple of times, and both times the shrimp was also fresh, but since I usually get only the catfish, I really can't vouch for other menu items, except the hush puppies, which are some of best I've had anywhere as far as overall consistency of flavor and being perfectly crisp on the outside vs. moist on the inside. read more

This place is a lot more packed than the Arlington location or at least during lunch. They have several parking lots that will require a minute of walking so that just shows how busy they get. While I was waiting in line, I was handed a hushpuppy sample which was pretty good! I ordered 3 fish tacos, fried of course. They were huge! I ended up giving my friend the third taco cause I was stuffed after the second one. Overall, a great place to dine for lunch especially during lent season. Pretty good place. It was packed at about dinner time on a Friday so that is a good indication. I had the grilled snapper and a Mexican cocktail(seafood). The snapper came with beans and rice, and grilled squash and zucchini. The food was flavorful and plentiful. I think my eyes were bigger than my stomach because I couldn't finish the cocktail, not that it wasn't good. Next time I'm getting the snapper Veracruz style and some oysters. Maybe some mud bugs. Today's experience brought to you by 'Wyn the Severe'; Lunch time 6/25/2015. Second visit, worse than the first about a year ago. Beer selection is awesome and that's where it ends. Since you basically wait on yourself except preperation, exactly what are all those people doing back there? Obviously its not quality control. Everyone is friendly and the place is kitsche in a good way. If looks could make taste but sadly, no. After an eye appointment down the road(we were so happy when we passed and thought 'yay lunch is close by' ) My husbands eyes were dilated and we were holding up the line. I quickly asked the dude at the register if they had a shrimp and oyster combo. He said yes, I said great and I want the shrimp cocktail. He asked spicy or mild. I got 'mild' shrimp cocktail and a cup of crawfish chowder. We sipped our beer on the patio. Our order came up quick. I immediately had to glance twice at the 'chowder'. Teetering back to the table is sloshed quite a bit. No wonder as it was boiling hot and watery. It was so hot if it was spilled- so you remember that McDonalds coffee thing?? On to my husbands combo, that had catfish and $19.49. Um, noooo. He really just wanted shrimp and oysters but okay. Six shrimp and maybe 5 oysters, two fish strips and fries. Still no. $19.49?? I dive happily into my shrimp cocktail. Lettuce at the bottom, cabbage and what?? And it was not mild. I eat jalapenos every day. If this is mild some little old person is gonna choke on that mess, some day! The shrimp were good size but only maybe six in there. After the shrimp and avacado was gone, choked down with chips and gulps of beer, I finally got brave enough for the 'crawfish chowder'. Well I know that its not a gourmet restaurant but chef, please, if you call yourself that, please give someone some dicing lessons. There was a piece of celery in that bigger than my watch(remember the choking thing). And watery did not end with cooling off. Maybe eight crawfish in there. Sad, probably formerly frozen or just boiled, I mean overcooked teensy crawfish..swimming alone in a sea of giant hunks of celery, onion and potatoe. Oh and spicy too. Like black pepper someone spilled spice. Seriously, its such a great place but we have decided that unless its just fish or an appetizer, gathering of friends and beer, we will no longer be going out of our way to go there. I love this place! It is extremely kid friendly which makes this momma happy. The food all taste the same because they use the same batter on every thing fried... oh well. I had the catfish and fries ....pretty good and my daughter got the kids meal hamburger (huge burger for kid) it came in the cutest boat box with fries, animal crackers and a toy. My daughter loved the decor and entertained her for a while. It can be difficult to find parking and a table if they are busy but it's still worth the wait. Stopped in here when I was just driving by and saw the sign. The atmosphere was great, love that they had plenty of seating and a patio. The options on the menu were plenty!! They had fried oysters and I hadn't had any in a long time so I had to order. They were great!! Fried in a yummy batter to perfection, not to mention with a good tartar sauce. The staffers were very helpful. We were really pleased with our meals. luckily we decided to trust their judgement when ordering. Last night I ordered the crawfish poboy and I was pretty impressed. I have had the best poboys on the planet in NOLA and this one was darn close. They keep it authentic by using simple ingredients and pretty darn good fried crawfish tails. A poboy needs several key infredients. First you have to have great French bread, fresh sliced tomato, shredded iceberg lettuce, pickles, thin slivers of onion, and some sort of mayo, tartar sauce and hot sauce combination. There was plenty of meat on the sandwich and it was way to much for me eat in one sitting. My son had a couple of the mud bug tails dipped in ranch. He's turning 9 pretty soon and hes not a super adventurous eater. He ordered a combo of catfish and chicken tender with fries. It was also his first time eating catfish and he didn't complain about it. (Seems that's what we are striving for now days. That's eat most of the meal without complaining the entire time) My wife ordered the broiled grouper (maybe grilled?) dinner.
