Okay, not gonna lie, I really needed to pee so I came here and bought a drink to use the restroom. The girl taking my order was super sweet and friendly. I wanted my usual hot green tea and she showed me their menu offerings. I opted for the jasmine (big surprise haha) which was actually pretty decent. In terms of the restroom, I honestly could have snuck in because there wasn't a keypad or anything, but given how nice the employees were, I don't regret getting my drink. I was verbally assaulted by the person working the register for not leaving a tip. He asked why I didn't leave a tip, then called me a "cheap f&#king prick." He made a comment about me having a nice jacket and that I could afford it. This guy was just getting off his shift, he made a point to threaten me on the way out the door. I wanted to give management a chance to respond before leaving a review. I left a message, they didn't call back. I wrote an email, they didn't respond. This place is hiring dangerous people and they do not care at all about their customers. Avoid like the plaugue. read more

The quality of drinks are really good and you immediately get a nice waft of delicious roasted beans walking in! The shop is nice, quiet, and perfect for catching up with friends or doing work. I just would say the service itself isn't friendliest. The atmosphere of ordering or even asking questions about beverages or what is available, the answers are condescending. My order was made incorrectly as well, (which is totally fine things like this happen all the time, I work in service industry), and I politely tell barista I ordered iced not hot, and the response and body language were as if I was being extremely inconvenient. I understand work can be stressful, or if you're busy, or maybe if there are personal issues that may be pressing you, but the same goes for anyone that comes in to buy coffee. My whole visit took decently long as my drink wasn't called, (I was standing right in front). If someone has been standing for over 15 minutes near a counter, I would ask what beverage they ordered. Flywheel Coffee Roasters is located in between Haight and edge of Golden Gate Park. I think there was also a pop-up across the street. This shop is extremely spacious in San Francisco standard. There are plenty of seating arrangements and also a tiny, mini backyard. Also, I almost felt as if I was in some chemistry or science lab when inside. I ordered an Americano and it was tasty, but maybe too diluted with water. Woodsy and caramel-like, but not intense. I think it is great coffee, but not my favorite one in San Francisco that I've been to. I'll give it 4 stars since this is their unique craft. Outdoor patio is super cute. Approved for a couple hours of work or studying time! If you need a place to work and could fuel yourself on a hot latte for a couple of hours, then proceed. I loved the decor of the patio: barrels as table tops, regular table tops, benches, hanging plants, standing jungle vibe plants and thick walls to block out the wind. The space is small; think more parklet vs patio. Still, felt nice to get some work done, safely outdoors. Ah, but I do have a little more to give... The coffee was alright; just got a latte. The bacon maple donut was good; more salty than sweet. The donut did have a piece of hair on it, and they gave us a new one no problem,but ... sigh, just one more glance at the donut before giving it to your customer would have done the trick. The wifi didn't work, but hopped onto the Whole Foods wifi and it worked fine. The service wasn't as welcoming and friendly as I would've liked, but hey, I'm bumping up a star to 3/3.5, especially for the nice outdoor patio they had in the back and the friendly service via phone and leaving the shop. "Real quick" on the service though. When I called in to ask if they had outdoor seating, the lady who answered was super sweet. She explained the patio wasn't heated, but it did conceal the wind really well.Appreciate the details! Whoever she was, she was great! However, when I got to the coffee shop, the ladies working at the counter weren't as friendly. The vibe was just off from the beginning. Maybe it was a tough morning? What really threw me off...as I was sitting in the back patio, waiting for my husband to get our drinks, one of the workers had come out to the patio and said "you need to buy something to sit here." I nicely told her "oh yeah totally, just waiting for my drink; husband is in line", but she walked away. I was really thrown off. I can get behind policy, no problem. I very much agree on customer seating only. BUT...Could she have started with a "Hi, could I get you anything?" or "Oh, did you need to see a menu?" or how about an ice breaker, "Hey there, do you need the wifi password?" before dropping some policy. I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt, but I haven't been thrown off in a while. So that's my 2..3..4 cents... Let's end on a good note, yeah? When we left, the guys behind the counter were so nice... and they made us feel welcomed to come back, "Hope you got some work done! & Have a nice rest of your morning!" Where am I going with this? Overall I didn't feel too welcomed upon entering this place, and I don't think I'll be headed back here. BUT... Love getting to call Flywheel my neighborhood coffee place. The coffee is exceptional thanks to Fatima, the in-house roaster who has nailed the art of a consistent roast, and to all the staff who know how to pull a great shot and make the coffee stand out. I love coming in because even before my first sip, my spirit lifts just walking in and being greeted by the crew who's working that day. My go to is an oat milk cappuccino, and my husband always gets a pour over and shot of espresso. The blueberry coffee cake is fantastic and so is the zucchini bread. I like they have indoor and outdoor space, also space across at the park to sit and enjoy a beautiful day outdoors. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had 4 different kinds of coffee beans to choose from and they hand pour each cup! I was looking for an afternoon pick me up after a Classpass workout in Haight and walked over to Flywheel! It's so hard to find coffee shops open in SF after a certain hour so I was really happy to see that Flywheel was still open. Their longer hours for a coffeeshop make it perfect to work / study there or stop by later in the day for a late coffee. It's also located right by Kezar and the Panhandle which is beautiful to stroll through with your cup. The taste of the latte itself was okay to me, I've definitely had better in the city. I also have a bad opinion of places that charge a whole extra $1 for using oat milk as a milk substitute. Am not a huge fan of that at all. I will be back though to get some more coffee and work inside now that COVID protocols are lifting! read more

For starters, when we were trying to order our drinks we were asking the barista for her opinion since we aren't big coffee drinkers and she was not very helpful. On New Year's Eve 2020 (December 31), I stumbled upon Flywheel Coffee Roasters on my way to San Francisco's Golden Gate Park (GGP) - be sure to check out my Yelp review for GGP, too. I was immediately drawn to its architecture, interior design, vibe and aromas. Flywheel is located adjacent to Golden Gate Park on Stanyan, next to Whole Foods. It was a former bike shop. Once inside, you'll notice the spacious yet industrial vibe and artwork. If you're like me, you might be wondering if the name "Flywheel" has any meaning or significance. Well it does. I read online that the coffee shop's business name stems from the flywheel effect, "a term coined by Jim Collins who analyzed 1500 companies and narrowed his list down to the 11 most successful. He wanted to find out what united them and as it turned out they were all companies that took time to grow and all of them had a big breakthrough at some point, which then accelerated their growth substantially. This is what he called the flywheel effect. And it's a bit of a hommage to this space's past as a bike shop." Flywheel was founded by a native Nicaraguan who grew up on his family's coffee farm. They offer house-roasted beans sourced from around the globe. Every cup is made as a pourover on a Hario V60, with espresso shots pulled on a customized La Marzocco machine. Honestly, I have to say that Flywheel Roaster is one of the BEST local coffee shops I've ever experienced. Excellent coffee. Great customer service. I'd be here every morning if I lived in SF. I ordered a small Vanilla late with honey + almond milk. My drink was customized, made to order; I was hesitant about the honey recommendation but it was perfect. The barista and cashier were welcoming, friendly, attentive and professional. My drink was $6.00 and I left a tip. Yes, it's a bit pricey, but it was worth it. I highly recommend stopping by Flywheel especially if you plan to visit Golden Gate Park. In fact, right across the street, you'll notice that The Recreation & Park renovated the 1930s-era garden shed (which looks like an out-house) at the intersection at Haight + Stanyan Streets by transforming it into a Flywheel cafe kiosk. I asked the barista about it and she says they offer different pastries. Overall, I had a great first experience at Flywheel. I'd definitely come back when I'm in the area again. read more

This was a super wonderful experience! I was in the neighborhood and looking for a good cup of coffee/latte. I stumbled upon this place and stopped in. The vibe here was really cool and I loved the decor and set up - I wish I'd had the time to stay. They don't do flavored lattes so I settled on a mocha. The barista (Keanu) who made my mocha was wonderful! He told me all about where their beans come from and how they roast the beans in house. Even though my drink was to-go he took extra time to make my drink beautiful! He told me about some great spots in the neighborhood to check out because I told him I was from out of town and just visiting for the day. He was so nice! As for the mocha it was delicious and kept me going for the rest of the day ( my brain was still on east coast time) I think it was $5-$6 which is a standard price. Incredibly poor experience every time we go here and we've finally decided to never go back. Service is abysmal - the entire staff outside of one employee treats you like you're a disturbance while simply patiently & quietly waiting for coffee (that they fail to say the names of mind you) and never attempt to provide any semblance of hospitality throughout the experience, start to finish. Every time you're paying $25 for two coffees and a pastry it feels like you've personally offended them for being there and I'm sick of feeling robbed by people who don't care about you. The "coolness" of a staff that can't be bothered with mediocre ambience is not it. You chose to work in Food & Bev. Go work in a non-customer facing job if you are so bothered by them being there. Also, for what is worth, I'm the GM & Beverage Director of craft cocktail bars + restaurants and I'm generally very forgiving of people in hospitality. I would never hire any of the people I've interacted with here outside of the one person who's nice to everybody's dogs. Atrocious experience. Never again. read more

I had bookmarked Flywheel Coffee Kiosk on Google Maps as a convenient coffee stop in Golden Gate Park. But when we got there, the coffee kiosk/ public bathroom? appeared shuttered. But fortunately, Flywheel Coffee Roasters is right across the street facing the park. The location is almost as convenient as the in-park kiosk, except for that it's an actual cafe, so it makes stopping by with a dog more difficult. (Fortunately, I was with a friend who waited with my impatient dog outside). I had a latte and my friend had an americano. It was maybe the best latte I've had in awhile. Only one size is available, which I think is the purist approach so that one gets the perfect espresso to milk ratio. The price was standard, maybe even a few cents cheaper than the going rate in Marin? The baked goods looked super good, but, unfortunately, we had just picked up less-enticing pastries at Whole Foods next door (before we noticed the Flywheel sign). Oh, well, next time. There was a small gathering of police officers drinking espresso drinks outside the doorway. I don't know that police officers have a reputation for setting the standard of coffee connoisseurship, but for some reason I've always had this hunch that patrolling the SF beat, you probably develop a refined palate. The interior is kind of dark (everything is painted black) for my taste, but Golden Gate Park is right there, which is a much better setting for enjoying your hot drink and pastry. read more

I came in to meet a friend for coffee. Upon entering there was no greeting from the baristas, which I was fine with since they were making drinks. Being this was my first time here, I had no idea what to order, what their drink menu was or what the ordering process was like. I walked up to the counter and saw the iPad facing towards me and I thought maybe I'm suppose to just order it myself. I figured if I had to wait to order that the barista who was less than a foot away from me and the ipad would say "I'll be right with you" or something along the lines of that. Since he did not say anything, I made an assumption that maybe I was suppose to order through the iPad since I have been to places that have an iPad ordering station. Since the iPad was already facing me, I looked to see what they had besides what was written on the wooden menu on the back wall. When the barista finally came over to me and he gave me a dirty look before he pushed the iPad towards himself to ask for my order. I asked if they could make a vanilla latte considering the menu had latte is an option. The barista said, "we don't have syrups" in a rude response because he was obviously irritated that I look at the iPad and almost proceeded to click the buttons to order myself. I purchased a croissant and iced latte. Very much decent for the price. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't have any vanilla syrups. How can I drink my vanilla iced lattes without vanilla?! I was very excited to try this place because of the reviews & bustling activity. Opted for the extension across the street and that's when it took a turn for the worst. Reminder: you cannot control how others act, but you can control how *you* react. Went to the extension and it was empty. We were welcomed in and I immediately asked questions about the pastries, said please and thank you. I make the effort to be extra polite because I used to be a server and the service industry can be tough. Guess Miss Barista was having a bad day because she was not having my questions or my request for a vanilla iced latte-- that's fine, but could you make recommendations or let me know what else you have? The barista was def having a bad day and I could sense this because she was short and rude. I didn't tip because I didn't like her attitude. I know that sucks, but even if I did tip 20% that's a couple dollars (not cash) so it gets taxed. It's not my responsibility to pay baristas a living wage: it's their employers. If you are unhappy with the $$ you're making this is not my fault. But a $2 tip off my coffee wasn't going to make your day. And I am sorry that made you angry. However, you cannot EXPECT a tip when you were rude to me and my partner. You cannot get verbally aggressive and call my partner and I out for not tipping. Absolutely terrible. This whole situation is ridiculous. I got verbally slandered: called cheap and a name for not tipping on an iced coffee that I didn't enjoy and a service that was rude and disrespectful. This whole ordeal put a bad taste in my mouth. Do better. There are thousands of coffee places in the area I can walk to. Ambiance is nice. It has a cool and laidback coffee shop vibe. It's a very nice place to meet up with people and some even study/work here. However, service is horrible. The cashier seems to be very uninterested, borderline rude, and not really happy with her work when she was taking our order. I was not expecting something out of the ordinary. But a simple welcoming gesture would be nice. It kinda dampen our experience but we still gave it a shot. For the barista, I was waiting for my order as the cashier did not take my name. The barista asked me if I had a question and I told him I was waiting for my order. He told me to wait and he will call for me (in a rude way). I was taken aback so I just went back to my seat. After several minutes, my order was still not called. When I went back to the barista, my hot drinks were already sitting there for a while that they were already lukewarm. When we got to taste our drinks, there were clear differences on the tastes. For instance, me and my friend both ordered hot chocolate. When I tasted mine, it tasted like warm water. But when I tasted my friend's drink, it was the chocolate taste I was expecting. I thought it was just me so I had my other friends take a sip but we all have the same comments. Going back to the cashier, my friend brought my drink to the 'kind' lady. To no surprise, she gave her a cold puzzled look - seems to be confused as to why this person is still talking to her. She eventually took the drink and had it replaced but again it was worse than before. All in all, the place is really good - ergo the two stars. Came here to pass time in-between meeting friends. Out of the coffee shops I found, Flywheel was open the latest (6pm). They're located in the Haights district. There's a lot to explore in the area, especially if you enjoy thrifting. The interior is a dark rustic vibe. It's a big space with lots of seating, and there's an outdoor patio. When I went the seating gets filled up quickly. Flywheel offers wifi for 2 hours and if you need more time, you have to purchase another item. You can also use your personal hotspot if you need to. Parking was super busy so I had to walk about 10 minutes out. If I wanted to stay longer, it's annoying to have to deal with parking meters (max 2 hours) and having to go back and forth to make sure I don't get a ticket. I don't want to have to leave my stuff there either. I ordered a Cappuccino ($4.75). It meet my expectations and was reasonably priced. I liked how it came in a mug. read more

I would love to make this my regular but every time I've gone there, all of the seats are taken up by people on laptops. It's a shame because this place has room for a lot more seating especially in the back which seems to function as a "storage/ supply" area There are a lot more high top bar spaces and not as many regular tables With every seat taken by a laptop and the dark interior , it feels somewhat akin to walking into some weird bunker. A great find, right across from Golden Gate Park! SF has its fair share of hipster coffee shops, and Flywheel definitely meets the standard. The interior was very spacious, yet warm and cozy. There's lighting that will fit your mood: dim lighting in the back and plenty of natural lighting in front to enjoy your cup of coffee. There's plenty of small tables, and most people were either reading or on their laptops. The music played at a nice mellow level, so it'd be nice to study here! When we moved to Haight Ashbury, my partner and I were so glad to have Flywheel nearby. Super conveniently located on Stanyan between Haight and Page (and very close both the Panhandle and Golden Gate), we frequently walk by and are tempted by the delicious flavors fanning out their door. The inside has a generous amount of room inside (if/when you're able to enjoy something on site), and the staff is always attentive and quick to get through orders. The selection of coffee bevvies is pretty standard, though it's very appreciated to have oat milk on hand as a non-dairy option. They do also have some tea options, and the iced tea in particular is quite good. Hoping that they might consider adding matcha in the future! I've also heard (but have not yet seen in person) that they stock dynamo donuts - if I can manage to grab a vegan option from dynamo and some iced tea I will be in heaven. Here's hoping! read more
