Had a friend tell me about a foodie trip to Des Moines he had. Bragged about a legendary "Crab Rangoon Pizza." I marked it on Yelp and waited for the opportunity when I was near. My son has a B-Ball tournament this weekend and we FINALLY made it. TOTALLY worth the hype. Everything a crab Rangoon offers plus cheese. Make sure you eat it hot and fresh to get that *crunch* from the wonton chips. The pizza rolls (egg rolls with pizza stuffing) were delicious. Genius idea. The atmosphere is small warm and cozy. I don't get the hype. I think it's all just weird toppings on mediocre pies if it was cheaper I really wouldn't be so harsh but honestly, the price point and what you get need hype to generate the cost. As a NYC transplant who has been in the business I just don't get it. I tried. I came in open minded and open to the experience but left disappointed. I was disappointed. after hearing about this place for years all over the travel channel, I was pumped to try the crab Rangoon pizza. granted we got take out, but after waiting 45 minutes for the food to be ready, you'd think it would at least be piping hot and fresh right? wrong. the crust was incredibly stale. like they took ready made crust from 2 nights ago and slapped on some cream cheese and duck sauce. ps, didn't take much crab. the crab Rangoon itself, however, was tasty; came as an egg roll as opposed to your typical wonton. the egg rolls also good. the fongolian beef pizza was also a miss for me and the pieces of scallion were obscenely huge. sriracha chicken bites alright, but generic and not very spicy. Kung pao chicken pizza also just ok. crust for all of them really unacceptably stale. overall, really disappointed. also this place is small and cramped, only street parking available, and does not take reservations. after like 10 pm? they also only serve single slices of the pies they have left. the decor is kitschy in an not uncharming way. maybe it's better when you eat in? read more

I was really excited about trying this Asian-fusion pizza, but the crab Rangoon was sadly just not it for my family. The cream cheese w/ seafood hint was just a little too rich and the crunchies on top with sweet and sour sauce just weren't our thing. I wish it were otherwise. So, the last time I went to this restaurant, it had rained a lot in the last week and the roof literally fell in on all my friends and I at the booth near the door. We had just arrived, and it was terrifying. It didn't matter! The staff was super friendly, immediately found us another seat, and started serving us pizzas. Their drinks are delicious. I was in Des Moines visting a friend last weekend and while deciding what we wanted to eat I mentioned that I'd heard about how great Fongs pizza was. There was a decent sized group of us, so we ordered the crab rangoon pizza, the bahn mi pizza, a meat lovers and a cheese. Everything I'd heard about fongs was spot on, great thin crust, amazing flavors and cooked to perfection. Choosing a favorite would be difficult, but I'd have to say the bahn mi was the best, something about the flavors of the spicy mayo and roasted pork shoulder just worked so well. I love the concept, the ambiance was fun, the help was pleasant, but the food was lacking. The very entertaining and tasty ingredient list was sparsely applied to my make-your-own pie resulting in a non-descript experience. The speciality pie we tried was tasty, but the flavors weren't crisp enough and the taste became too "mushy" before we were through. Charming, eclectic, fun, quirky and delicious these are all of the adjectives I'd use to describe Fong's Pizza. My friend and I happened upon this gem in downtown Des Moines at lunch time as we were headed to our show. While we tried 2 10" pizzas, the star of the show for us were the pizza egg rolls. OMG! I enjoyed them so much I almost sent someone to buy me another order before we left the city. The egg rolls were everything you'd want in an egg roll with the cheesy, savory goodness of pizza. For our pizza choices we chose the Crab Wonton Pizza and the General Tso's Pizza. While they were both tasty we felt the wonton pizza lacked the true cream cheese taste you'd get from a crab wonton it was still our favorite pizza. The key is to get the perfect bite of all of the ingredients and your mouth will do a little happy dance. For the general tso's pizza, we both wanted more sauce. While it was the most reminiscent of general tso's the over abundance of baby corn and water chestnuts was too much for us to power through. If you love baby corn and water chestnuts this pizza will send you over the moon. Because we were working we didn't partake of any of the exciting drinks from the tiki bar we saw many tasty looking drinks leaving the bar during our lunch visit. I don't know if I'll ever be in Des Moines again, but if I do, I plan to stop by Fong's again. If you are in downtown Des Moines it is definitely worth a visit. read more

So, the first time I came to "DES" Moines (my name is Des--BOOM), my driver, Nolan, said "You have got to eat a Fong's crabragoon pizza!" He was infatically pushing that I did this. Nolan picked me up from the hotel to bring me to the conference to speak (had to work in that I was a speaker). He had one of the crabragoon pizzas with him. He was going to make sure I had this special pizza. We ate it while in the car. It was good and not so different that I wanted to chase it down with water. It became clear to me that this place has won the hearts of the college kids. Their cult-like following wad not at all lost on me. (Perhaps they put crack in this pizza). If I understand the story correctly, a Chinese restaurant burnt down. Someone else opened a pizza joint there and called it Fong's Pizza. Apparently, they wanted to keep the tradition of the Chinese restaurant alive. Today, I am back in "DES" Moines (for the Young Entrepreneur Convention) and I had to treat my entire family to their crack. It is still good. Might be addicted now. read more

First time, slow Friday, we ordered a Ramen and a Crab Rangoon. We did a walk-in order for carry out and bartender told us to come back in 45min. We came back in 60 min and were told they'd "given our order to someone else 'by mistake'." Had to wait 30 more minutes, got our pizza home (we live 5min away) and it was ice cold. What, had it actually been sitting there the whole time and they just "forgot?" Not surprising as no one there seemed to know what was going on. Second time, wanted to give them another chance. Busy Saturday night, ordered online for pickup, two Rangoon Pizzas and two cheese breads. Showed up 15 minutes early. Again, no one knew what was going on, total chaos. They "found" the order 10 minutes later than when it was supposed to be done, but now were "out of ingredients" for one pizza and "forgot" to do 2 cheese breads. This time, bartender was confused about providing a partial refund for the part of the order they couldn't fill. Had to wait another 15 minutes just to get the partial order - 25 minutes after the full order was supposed to be done. Update: received the correct refund next day. Although things could have been alot better both times, the pizza and cheesebread were both good, and reheated well. Bumped this up to three stars. Caveat emptor. Don't think I'll be rolling the dice with these guys again. read more

Loved the vibe! We came in at 4:30 and it was pretty busy for a Sunday but we had no problems finding a booth. I love crab rangoons, so I had to try the pizza...It didn't disappoint, it was amazing! The crust was perfect, thin, but not hard, just a nice crunch. And I have to say, the pizza tasted just like a crab Rangoon! Good selection of beers not just on tap. Went to Fong's on a Friday night with a party of 2. Had their supposed best seller, crab rangoon, and a few drinks. Upon arrival, no one acknowledged us for 5 minutes. Luckily one of the waitresses noticed us and said someone will be right over. The hostess wasn't accommodating and with a monotonous voice just said, "here". Placed the menu in the open table near the entrance. That was the sign that the table she placed the menu on is our seat. She looked really unhappy and she made me feel like it was so much trouble on her part to seat us. She was the same way with the next party after us so I guess she is just not having fun that night. I remember going here a couple of years ago and had good food. But alas, I was disappointed. Customer service - I have had better. Our waitress wasn't the best but she was mediocre. You can tell they were somewhat busy and I think she did the most she can with getting our orders completed for the most part. We each got a couple of drinks and shared a pizza. We were an easy table. We got what we ordered basically. Hostess was very disappointing. She could at least be cordial but hey, maybe she wasn't having a great night. I would rate customer service about 2/5. I have had better experience in a busier, less expensive restaurant. Food - we only got 1 pizza. A 16" crab rangoon pizza. I would rate the pizza itself 1/5. I would have left the ratings 1/5 if I would only consider the food. The pizza crust came in thin, and tasted like cardboard. I was very disappointed. I could not see any imitation crab and I would have expected more cream cheese on the pizza for flavor. The pizza was topped with sweet chili sauce - which was the only redeeming factor for flavor. Otherwise, the whole dish is no different from chomping your cardboard boxes. I thought it was horrible. Tip: YOU CANNOT SPLIT PIZZAS. I.e. you cannot order a 16" pizza and have half crab rangoon and half thai peanut pizza. Drinks - had the kamikaze and a drink special not on their menu - amo de la muerto. Kamikaze was just okay. It tasted more like lemon drop and there was barely any alcohol I could taste. But it only costed $3/shot so if you want to get tipsy with one shot, this is not the drink for you. It was sour and sweet, which tasted pretty good. I'd say 3/5. The specialty drink was pretty good and you get used to it. At first I thought it tasted like cough syrup. After a while, it grows on you and tastes okay. It comes in a cute skull cup. For $8, the drink is big. You cannot taste the alcohol but you will get tipsy. I would get it again. That drink would probably be 4/5 in my opinion. Overall, I was disappointed with my visit at Fong's. Hence, my rating. Customer service and the food was very disappointing. I don't know if I will come back here again anytime soon. read more

Love the old school Chinese place vibes and was located right in the heart of downtown Des Moines.
