As a table we ordered, the baguette french toast (8/10), tangelo pop tart (6/10) a little bitter for me, cinnamon roll (7/10)- good shareable, a chilaquiles, the champagne omelette (8/10)-- needed salt or a sauce, the seafood sandwich (7/10) needed a sauce, the poulette chicken (9/10) pretty delicious, and the romanesca. The seafood platter was pretty good. The oysters and crab were my favorite, the clam with caviar was unique, the crawfish were a fun addition, but the shrimp were pretty uninteresting. The ambiance sitting outside was great, but I was disappointed in the movie choice - I would have preferred a foreign film over Austin Powers Service was fairly slow considering we were there at the first seating, and when the platter was delivered we had to ask several times for explanations of what we received. Our first time here! Made a reservation for our anniversary and they were so incredibly amazing and had a card for us! We were seated right away even though we were 20 mins early. The servers were just so kind and checked in on us often! The pulled mozzarella dish was so fresh and mind blowing! My mezcal cocktail was delicious. They even let us walk around and see the place and the projector! The live posters all over the place just added to the experience! It's a beautiful setting! Foreign Cinema has been on my to try list for years, and I finally made it here for dinner with a group of friends. It's easy to miss the entrance but follow maps and you'll walk through the entrance doors and be transported into a old time-y theater like setting. Ambiance was cozy despite sitting outside under the covered open area, and movie showing start around sundown. Servers are friendly and will answer any questions/concerns, and the menu is interesting since the items are not named; instead, they are a description of the dish. 1. Warm Mediterranean mixed olives (2.5/5) After having warm olives at another fine dining establishment and being blown away, my partner and I like to try the olives if we see it on the menu now. Foreign Cinema's mixed olives tasted fresh and flavorful but ordinary. 2. September Sonoma melons, sliced San Daniele proscuitto, cocoa nibs, Capezzana olive oil (5/5) I'm a fruit girl, so I love a seasonal fruit. On this day, it was one of the last days they had Sonoma melons and although I'm not sure on the exact type of melon they had, it was orange like a cantaloupe but tasted so sweet when paired with the savory and soft proscuitto. 3. Mission figs, fresh mozarella staciatella, Aleppo chili crunch, Za'atar, mint, dill (4/5) This was another shared appetizer and everything complimented each other nicely. You had all the flavors and textures: soft and sweet figs atop a creamy mozzarella and sprinkled with a light chili crunch and refreshing herbs. One of the more interesting shared plates. 4. Madras curry sesame fried chicken, quinoa tabbouleh, honey-coriander baby carrots, toum, mizuna (4.5/5) This entree was the better of the two I tried, with the highlight being the fried chicken of course. The exterior of the fried chicken was crunchy and the interior meat was moist and tender - yum! and The quinoa was acidic and accurately tasted like tabbouleh, the carrots tasted pretty normal, and the garlic toum was savory and gave the chicken some interesting flavor when smeared in the spread. 5. Five-spice duck breast, yellow peaches, French caviar lentils, Blue Lake beans, field greens, quacklin' butter (3/5) Duck breast was beautifully cooked and very tender. The caviar lentils did not have much flavor that I could taste and the vegetables were minimal. So yummy but I'd order the fried chicken dish if I were to go again. 6. Chocolate pot de creme, whipped chantilly cream, chocolate shavings (5/5) Best item! Wow, this decadent yet light chocolate mouse topped with the fluffy cream was heavenly. Definitely more dark chocolate than sweet which I loved. Do try this if you get the chance. 7. Birthday cake - chocolate layer cake, bourbon buttercream, mixed berry compote (4.5/5) I believe the birthday cake (like other items on the menu) change in flavor every couple weeks, and the bourbon buttercream sounded interesting. I think with the movie, cute patio lighting, and friendly knowledgeable service, that would have already ranked the evening pretty high... but the food was impressive!! Honestly we weren't really watching the movie so inside could have been nice and the sound for the movie isn't played out loud. Food: All dishes had small portions for the price point, but the presentation and taste were on point: Oysters - fresh and well-prepared Arugula salad - good starter Tuna carpaccio - beautifully executed Grilled octopus - tender and flavorful RIBEYE STEAK - This was THE dish! Served with carrots, veggies, and garbanzo beans in the most unique plating I've ever seen for steak. Cooked perfectly, bursting with flavor, and Instagram-worthy presentation. This dish alone made my night! We had a tasty and elevated meal with our kids. We ordered a dozen oysters (Marin Miyagi were our favorite, but the Pacific Gold and Hog Island sweets were good too), and a chicory salad to start. FOOD The bavette wagyu steak was cooked to a medium rare as requested. However it was overly salty and for the entree portion, not very filling. It came with carrots and some potatoes. I'd prefer a $43 entree that did not leave me hungry The olive focaccia bread was soft and tasty. It had a nutty olive oil for dipping. Friends thought fried chicken was ok, Plancha calamari dish was weird (cooked and not fried). Cocktails generally were average and wouldn't say were special at $17-18 each. The ice cube with a cat icon was cute for one cocktail. SERVICE AND AMBIANCE Our server seemed busy tending to various tables, but often times he would pass our table without even looking at us. Many other staff (other servers, wait staff clearing plates, managers with iPads) would also be passing by, looking through tables and not at us. For a table of 9, advanced reservation, and special occasion, a minimum attention should have been there. We had to ask for water multiple times until it got so frustrating that we requested carafes. The drinks round took 20 minutes to come out. Our waiter didn't come back to take food orders for another 20 minutes after, despite us seeing him at nearby tables. Dinner entrees were served 45 minutes after order (a few friends ordered and received appetizers within 15 minute window). It also took 10 minutes to flag down the waiter just for the bill and he forgot a pen so we ended up just going to the register to pay anyway. Maybe this is a classy spot for a date night or small group, but the mid food and lackluster service was just disappointing. Please work on the staff's attention to detail, even if the food portion or prices don't change. It's in the middle of the Mission district, and you walk through what looks like an unassuming small theater door. As you walk to the host table, you are greeted by a long hallway adorned with vintage movie posters on either side. the My husband brought me here for a belated Valentine's meal, and it was perfect. We sat outside under the stars and lights while The Man with the Golden Gun was projected on the wall. Each table had a little speaker box playing the movie's audio. The food was enjoyable, with some notable dishes. My husband had their chicken, which was perfectly fried with a light crust and packaged with flavor. I loved my Wagyu main dish. We also got to try the Camembert appetizer, which we thoroughly enjoyed, although we wished there were a bit more crostini to go with it. The house bread was warm and comforting, and the butternut squash soup was smooth and flavorful. , We got to check out the grounds a bit more after dinner and were impressed by how they've utilized the space. There are indoor seats available and on the other side of that, a private room that doubles as an art gallery with a cozy back patio and fireplace. This spot has been on our docket for many many years. The ambience was so much fun. The service was exceptional. I would've brought my kids sooner if I had the kids meal was the best deal here. We booked a dinner reservation more than a month in advance in the outside patio, where you can watch the movie that is showing for the evening. In the summer, you have to dine pretty late to see the movie since they do not start it until sunset which was around 815 on August summer night. To start off with we had a salad along with a yummy cod based dip. And the kids meals were amazing for $20. They got a starter plate that was a beautifully decorated array of vegetables and fruits. Then for the entrée one of my kids had pasta and the other had a fried chicken that has a slight curry flavor to it, and it is also found on the adult menu for like twice the price. My husband has a wagyu steak which was pre-cut when she found interesting, but it was very tender and flavorful with the chimmichurri sauce, and butter beans. Didn't seem too pricy, as the cut was a bit smaller , but it felt like just the right amount of steak at a reasonable price. The kids meal ended with ice cream and they also gave me a delicious slice of hazelnut chocolate cake for my birthday . We're generally pretty fast eaters, but the meal took over two and a half hours . Food seemed really slow and came in an odd order (for example, the salad came at the very end) . I wasn't sure if they were purposely spacing out our meal so that we would be able to watch the movie which again was showing late that night. A cinematic temple of duck confit and drama. In full disclosure--which I only mention because lawyers and ethics and also a misplaced sense of pride--I was a small, possibly microscopic, investor in the early days. I saw something. Not a trend. Not a buzzy flash in a pan with saffron foam. I saw longevity. I saw date nights and celebrations. I saw let's have the oysters before we fight about the original film versus the remake. The food? Lordy, the food. It's not precious. It doesn't wink. It's honest. Seasonal. Sexy. That Madras curry sesame fried chicken that makes you question why you ever settled for lesser birds. The steak tartare that feels like a dare and a poem. And then there is Laszlo. The sidecar of the experience. Still projecting films onto walls while people fall in and out of love over mussels and rosé. It has outlasted tech booms, recessions, pandemic panic, and more than a few food critics. Foreign Cinema doesn't chase the moment. It hosts it. And I've been lucky enough to keep showing up--brunch, dinner, and otherwise--again and again, in search of that perfect scene. The French toast was also good but not as filling, however the fresh fruit appetizer was a great way to start a meal with perfectly blended flavors. The madras Bloody Mary was delicious and flavorful while not being too spicy. The blood of a poet drink was also refreshing with a slight bitterness that helped balance out the balsamic eggs. So happy we gave Foreign Cinema's brunch another go--food and drinks were generally spot on, and service was friendly and efficient. Free metered street parking on Sunday, though it gets busier the later you go. Seating is 60/40 outdoors/indoor; outdoors has heaters and bistro lighting. Overall, beautiful atmosphere, though on a sunny day it can be very bright--bring sunglasses. Homemade blood orange pop tart ($8.5) was not overly sweet, though had a ton of sugar on top (both powdered and Demerara(?))--would prefer the sugar to be in a glaze form so you're not crunching on granules. Same issue with the sweet bacon (millionaire's without any heat)--would prefer for it to be rendered down more and the sugar less granular. But I'd definitely get both again--sweet bacon is the only bacon I like. Bavette steak and eggs ($36) - well seasoned, meat was tender though small portioned. French truffle omelette ($24) - super light and lick-your-lips tasty. I'm not an omelette girl, but if I'm going to get an omelette, this is most definitely the one I would get. Star of my brunch. Kids brunch ($18) - comes with a bowl of nicely presented and cut fruit (blood orange, mandarin orange, strawberries, blackberries); choice of either French toast, scrambled eggs, or grilled cheese; and 2 scoops of ice cream or sorbet (only chocolate and vanilla was avail when we visited). Portion size of fruit on this was similar to the adult menu version (which we also had, which was over some yogurt and honey). French toast was over a pineapple butter sauce, with fresh whipped cream on the side, and had cacao nibs on top (next time we'll be sure to ask them to omit the cacao nibs for my daughter). What an awesome concept! There are old drive in speakers for the movie sound. The Gunslinger was playing. We were here for a team dinner, and we all enjoyed the ambience, food and company! The drinks are unique and so good! read more
