Fornino is a good successor to Bark Hot Dogs (http://www.yelp.com/biz/bark-hot-dogs-brooklyn-3), offering up a slightly more upscale, yet family-friendly snack bar experience downstairs, with a pizza oven and bar on their newly-opened upstairs/outdoor deck. The upstairs deck at Fornino is a great spot to wind down and watch the sun set while overlooking the beach volleyball games on the adjacent sand volleyball courts. Personal pizzas range from $9-$12 and the pies are around 9-10" diameter, which is fair, but the only thing keeping them from a better review are their upstairs drink prices...$6 for a 12oz beer in a plastic bathroom cup or $27 for a pitcher isn't gonna cut it at a public park snack bar. They really need to revaluate their decision to charge $6 for a beer that costs them pennies to pour...either give a full 16oz cup/pour, or drop the per-glass price down to $5, and pitchers to $20-$23 and I'll be a happy camper. Aside from the above, the staff are friendly, and the new tables under brick red canvas umbrellas make for a nice place to sit and hang. As a seasoned player on the Pier 6 courts, my only wish was that these guys were open earlier in the summer so we all had a bit more time to enjoy the space! I've heard that heat lamps will be added so they can stay open till November, but once beach volleyball season ends for us, we most likely won't be back 'till next summer...Good luck! read more

I got up from my table and asked the bartender where can I get napkins and a plate he pointed to where. Would have been nice if he got them for me. The bar was empty and my pizza was on my table. Had a small birthday gathering here and it was amazing. They reserved a table for us on the outdoor deck (charged a small deposit, which was credited against our orders). The food was great, the cocktails were great, and the ambiance is amazing. Casual, fun, and amazing views. It's a great place for a group because you order at the counter/bar. We had a tab and paid for the group, but it would also be a really easy way to split the bill with a large group because everyone orders what they want and can pay separately. I came here since my friend wanted to do brunch here for her bday. We came upstairs where they had wooded picnic tables, two counters one for drinks and the other to order food. They don't have a huge selection of drinks but the normal beer, wine, sangria and vodka. Now lets get to the food. I saw that they had a brunch pizza with eggs. At first I found this a little gross but hey don't knock it until you try it so I order the Spinach, Tomato, fontina, prosciutto and baked eggs pizza. It has multiple open windows where you get to enjoy the weather and see volleyball games happening right next to Fornino. The second dining area is outside with benches. This one is further away from the volleyball courts and you cannot see the volleyball games happening... The pizza is not bad, which I guess is one of the important factors. But the service is awful. In fact, technically, there is no service. You order the food using an app, which may or may not work. (When we scrolled down the menu close to half of the items were not available anyway.) If it doesn't work, you go to the bar to order, hoping they'll get it right. Pizza was decent and our sandwiches were pretty good (Eggplant and Chicken). My biggest gripe and reason for three stars is the QR system they use and lack of service. It was pretty difficult to track down anyone to answer questions about the menu. Also, there was a lot of lag time between scanning QR code and the menu appearing. After we ordered the first time and wanted to order drinks, it wouldn't work. I ended up going to the bar myself to order the drinks. I also had to get water myself from the water jug as we didn't have a dedicated person serving us. At least if you order food at a counter, you have a person who will set you up with what you need and answer any questions you may have. It is conveniently located right across from the Brooklyn Bridge Park water play space. It opens at 11am so perfect for stopping by for a quick lunch after morning water play. They have a huge outdoor bench area with shaded umbrellas as well as an indoor eating area. There were signs for a rooftop area but we did not check it out. Since it was extremely hot outside we opted to sit inside. The indoor area does not have air conditioning and they open all the windows. There were two fans blowing so we sat near them. They have menu options ranging from pizza to sandwiches to pasta. The employees were playing loud music with curse words in it on the speaker. I normally can enjoy this music but as it was just me and kids in the restaurant I rather them not hear it. When we were in NYC in September, we spent the rest of our Sunday at the Piers (we spent the morning at the Transit Museum) and we were happy this delightful spot was right at Pier 1! They have lots of seating inside and outside. You order at a counter and wait for your food. It comes out in a good amount of time! We got the Mac and cheese and a small cheese pizza (my phone autocorrected pizza as clozapine...I guess eating pizza is like taking a clozapine????? Ha!). Me and my girls come here all the time in the summer. My favorite is the Al Roker pizza with sausages. The smashed potatoes is our favorite to get as a group. The caeser salads are big and filling. The margaritas are bomb as fuck! The only problem are the children. They are running all over the rooftop and running behind you when you eat. They also have bad communication between server and kitchen because we can wait for about a hour before they tell us the kitchen ran out of smashed potatoes after we already ordered and paid. Outdoor delight! I always run by here but came here for the first time on a Friday and got a table on the roof around 6pm before it got too crowded. They've got seating downstairs in the courtyard areas as well. You order at the bar and food counter separately. Bar had a good selection and iced teas for the non-drinkers. View of the city is amazing, especially at sunset. Rice balls were the highlight for me. It was not as cheesy as expected but crispy on the outside and just chewy enough on the inside. Loved the watermelon salad on a hot day, it surprisingly tasted great with cheese and onions and mint. Finally the pizza, loved the calabrese with a tomato based sauce and sopressata. We got another with broccoli rabe and sausage (which had a kick), which was more of an odd combo since the broccoli rabe was too bitter, but it was still well made fresh from the oven. What happened, Forino? The excellent service and pizza of the past when you were located on Bedford in a humble spot? Our first time at the new location since they moved wasn't a great experience and may be our last. Quite unfortunate, because Fornino was our favorite pizza restaurant quite literally of all time. It a little later in the evening and we were one of few people in the large restaurant. Our excitement was quickly extinguished by the unattentive waitress and the rest of the staff. It was damn near gone when the waitress rolled her eyes and continued talking to her colleagues when I raised my hand for her attention to indicate our readiness to order. The remainder of our stay consisted of unwelcoming lack of attention rudeness from the waitress. The food - salad and two pies... Still decent, though not on par with the old Fornino. One pie's dough was under cooked and the other was burnt beyond leopard. It will be hard for my friends and I to revisit our once favorite pizza restaurant, and that comes as quite a disappointment to us. read more

Fughedaboutit! It's hard to find better pizza that has this kinda view and an al fresco rooftop. I've made Fornino a staple of my summer biking with my 5 year old. We can ride along the green way at Brooklyn bridge park, stop for some playground activity and fill our tanks for the afternoon. It's hard to go wrong with any of their pies but just the margarita is heavenly. They're compact and with a very light crust and you'll likely be able to eat one entire pie. The spicy sopresatta pie is a treat and has high quality meat on it. Service used to be amazing and personal when Denise was managing but since she left in 2015 it's hit or miss now. After you order at the counter they give you a number to post at your table. This seems like it should work but sometimes it's quick and other times, well, you feel like people who came after you get their order first. If you want a drink you have to go to the bar and order and pay separately. Finish off your meal with a few scoops of Blue Marble ice cream and you'll be good for the full afternoon. PRO TIP: If you get there early enough you'll be able to score a prime table (one with a view of downtown Manhattan and an umbrella for shade). Be careful of the benches that prove to be very tipsy. If you sit too close to the corner you'll easily flip it over and look pretty silly in the process. read more

Love the concept of an open-air pizza/cocktail bar overlooking Brooklyn Bridge Park. I just wish the execution were better. If you hate annoying parents and their ugly kids, you might want to skip Fornino on a weekend. But if you can stomach it, or show up after 3 or 4, then it'll be a lot more peaceful. There's a ton of seating (picnic benches that clearly state they were made in Germany... okay), but you have to order drinks and pizza separately, which is annoying. They have promising cocktails (a lot with prosecco), but they all kinda sucked. Tried a gin one and one where you could choose your own liquor. Would not recommend either. Onto the food. You place your order at the counter and then they give you a number to bring to your table. Then someone brings you your pie. If it's not too busy, it takes 10 minutes. Their special pizza of the day was with asparagus, mozzarella, gorgonzola, capicollo and caramelized onions. Sounded great at $15, but the toppings were not even close to evenly distributed, and the asparagus added absolutely nothing to the pie. They tasted like they were added as an afterthought. A little balsamic or honey would've gone a long way to making it way better. Our second pie was the Quatro Stagione, which had tomato, mozzarella, prosciutto, kalamata olive, shitake mushrooms and eggplant (at $14). That was a far superior pie. The toppings worked well together, and I especially liked the olives. Their bathroom situation downstairs kinda sucks. It's open to everyone in the park, so expect long lines. But really, you can't beat the views, and at least one of the pizzas is great. Also, if you sit at the far end of the roof, you can voyeuristically watch some volleyball players.
