We had tickets to a late show at City Winery and wanted to try someplace "new to us" in Philly, so we landed on dinner for two at Forsythia. Overall a great meal, with attentive service, a decent ambiance (we were seated in the small front dining area wedged between bar and hostess station, I suspect it's a warmer vibe in the back) - oh and probably the best butter I ever had on the bread which welcomed us to our table. It was Graduation Weekend do they were running a 4-course prix fixe menu. We added oysters because we love them. First course offered only one option, the Roasted Asparagus. We would have ordered this anyway so no worries about that (though we may have tried a second option and traded tastes as we usually do). The asparagus was flavorful and tender, accompanied by Rhubarb and a just-right Sauce Gribiche. For the second course we selected Beef Tartare and Burrata Stuffed Squash Blosdoms. The beef was served with a zesty red onion-black truffle marmalade, a beef fat béarnaise which was a wee bit heavy and sourdough bread (which would not be my first choice to accompany). The squash blossoms did not really excite us upon reading the menu, but the 3rd option for first course was duck which I don't enjoy, so we landed there by process of elimination. We are so glad we did because that was one of our favorite plates! It was just revelatory. Served with peach and verjus from red grapes, it had a nice acidic and sweet balance. The blossoms were so delicate and bursting with creamy Burrata. Serrano ham rounded out the plate. For third course, I had the Bone Marrow Crusted Bavette Steak. It was served with an artfully arranged assortment of colorful carrots and maitake mushrooms, plus a sauce au poivre and harissa purée...very complementary flavors. My husband had the Icelandic Cod which was also a fabulous dish- with bok choy and morels floating in a delicate Provençal sauce. Thus felt the "most French" of all of our courses. For dessert there were two choices so we had one of each to share: a citrus tart which was tangy and offered great textures between crust, lemon curd and meringue, and a chocolate banana pot de crème with coconut (!), chocolate sablé and chocolate sauce which knocked our socks off. Forsythia has a fun wine and cocktail list and we enjoyed trying a few different French wines and house cocktails. This place is fantastic! Been following them on instagram for a while and finally got to experience this culinary gem. You must make a reservation! A while in advance too. We did the tasting menu for $109/each. This included 4 apps and 4 pastas. The insalata, maiale (pork belly), and suppli were delicious. There was another seasonal app with asparagus that was very refreshing and tasty. For pastas we got the garganelli, trofie, agnolotti and carbonara. Long story short - foods worth 5 stars, but service only 3, so average I'll give it 4 stars. Service: First of all, they require 22% tip which they obviously don't deserve. Our server was not bad, but was a little arrogant and not attentive enough. He didn't introduce the daily special to us, but I clearly heard that he introduced them to the other table next to us. But other than that, he was okay. Food: the food was really good. Although not the best, but still very satisfying. My favorite two dishes are the carbonara and the castelfranco salad. Small but gorgeous setting, lovely service and delicious food. Perfect for a date or a dinner for 2-3 people but there's definitely not room for large groups here. To start we had the focaccia with honey butter and ricotta which was delicious with their very strong cocktails. I had the juniper cosmo and my sister had the fennel mezcal Negroni and both were excellent. Then for appetizers we had the honey nut squash with hazelnuts, which may be the best squash I've ever had, as well as the misticanza salad which was very light with just the right amount of garlic and pecorino to balance out the bitter greens. For our main course we both had the chestnut brown butter cappelletti which was the perfect seasonal pasta and just the right portion size if you want to order appetizers as well and not feel too full at the end of your meal. We shared a dark chocolate sorbet for dessert and this was good, but nothing to write home about. I don't know what to say about forsythia that hasn't already been said. I booked a dinner here for dinner with my sisters, and the whole meal felt very special. They were also very accommodating when we had to change the res from 3 to 2. I will admit that I was worried for a second because I snagged the reservation before checking the reviews and truth be told they're a bit mixed, but I genuinely don't know how that's possible. The price of the prix fixe menu is more than listed on Resy ($79 vs $75 but I get it, inflation is a cruel mistress) and for two people with a bottle of wine and tip our meal came out to $300. Our server was very nice, explained everything well, suggested a wine that we ended up loving (he let us taste it first obvs) and gave us suggestions. We feel bad because we ended up not taking any of them hahaha, but only because we don't eat meat. Firstly, everyone says to get the suppli and they are not lying. I'm sure you can't go wrong with anything on the menu but we made sure to each get our own, and it was the right call. Delicious. Secondly, get the maritozzo for dessert. The gelatos were nice, but this is my favorite dessert I've had in a long time. The bold saltiness of the brioche with the sweet cream is something I will try to replicate in my desserts for years to come. Also, the bread was a revelation. The ricotta is amazing, the butter is amazing, the olive oil is amazing. And they all tasted better for being spread on that light *ss focaccia. Truly melted in our mouths. I love the environment and food here! I know it's pretty crowded usually, but we were lucky to get a walk in table at 6 pm on a Saturday. The service is very kind and efficient (although hesitant to give us recommendations lol; maybe against policy). Starter bread with ricotta and butter is phenomenal as is the Suppli appetizer. Definitely get this if you like slightly bready dishes, as the risotto inside is perfectly soft as well. I really enjoyed my pesto pasta, incredibly flavored although I thought the potatoes and beans included were pretty bland. The whole pine nuts there are a nice touch. I've been wanting to come here for a long time. Like some of the other reviewers, I was afraid that it would never meet expectations given this long anticipatory wait. We shared a bottle of Lambrusco as well as a lot of the apps and the entrees. For the apps: 1) The octopus was quite chewy. Not sure if I would get again 2) The fried olives were very tasty. 3) The rice ball was also very good, but much smaller in person than in the photos. 4) polpetta was my favorite of all the apps. Pastas (listed in order of my favorite to least favorite) 1) tagliatelle - so sad that it was such a small portion. 2) trofie - very fresh and this was #1 for the rest of the party 3) orecchiette 4) tonarelli- definitely could be 3 as well but we are not used to too much cheese so definitely a pasta to be split. Pre-COVID: 4 stars! My friend and I decided to check out Forsythia at 5pm on a Friday. She called to make a reservation, and 5pm was apparently the only timeslot available, so I would suggest making reservations in advance. We did outdoor dining, and the setup was distanced while aligning with the ambiance of a pricier dining experience. My friend and I had not seen each other in a while, so we went a little crazy with the ordering! But hey, more food to review! My friend ordered a wine at the recommendation of our server, which was either a sparkling red or rose, which she thought was delicious. For appetizers, we ordered the recommended suppli ($12), which is fried Cacio e Pepe risotto, and the tartare di agnello ($16), which is lamb tartare. In general, everything at Forsythia is on the smaller side, which is why I feel like it's too overpriced. If you're going for an appetizer, the suppli was a perfectly fried ball of rich, creamy, well-flavored risotto. The tartare also had good flavor, but not so amazing that I would recommend it. When split between two people, both could be eaten in one or two bites. We ordered both sides, which were potatoes ($8) and broccolini ($8). I would personally not recommend either of them. My friend ordered them because she was starving, but I think another entrée would be better in that case. The potatoes had good flavoring but were quite dry, and the broccolini was soaked in like a vinegar-like sauce which was unpleasant. For entrées, we ordered the mezze maniche alla norma ($20), which was an eggplant pasta in red sauce, and the carbonara ($22). Again, they mentioned that the portions were for sharing, but I strongly disagree with that assessment. These dishes could be eaten in 10 or less bites. The carbonara sauce was flavored well, but the pasta was thick and sticky. I was not a fan of the consistency, as I prefer noodles to be more slippery. Interestingly enough, their eggplant pasta noodles had the consistency I like. Both dishes were good, just not standout dishes for the size and the price. We ended with what I believe was a honey cake for dessert, which I forgot to take down the price. It was presented well and tasted good, but it was nothing that I would order again. Overall, I did think the food was good, presented well, and matched the ambiance the restaurant is going for. I decided to give Forsythia 5 stars (really 4.5 rounded up) because of the service. They were considerate of our requests to separate out the food, so we were not dipping our utensils into the same dishes. Our server also did multiple checkbacks, was knowledgeable about the menu, and was provided an overall great experience. COVID report: Forsythia has outdoor seating and the setup is great. Each table has its own heater, but the structure is very open. I called ahead on a Friday in mid-March and got a 5:00 pm reservation outside. My boyfriend and I shared: + Polpetta dal santo palato + Suppli + Agnolotti di coda alla vaccinara + Rigatoni all' amatriciana + Tajarin con ragu funghi + Honey cake My favorites were the suppli and honey cake, though the pastas were all great, too. The short rib agnolotti: (Agnolotti Di Coda Alla Vaccinara): this one was my fav of the night, it literally melted right away in my mouth and i absolutely love the taste. Now to the food. The warm focaccia was delish! I could've eaten a whole basket it was so darn good. We ordered the meatballs with short rib to start as well as the suppli. Both were incredible!!!! Next we shared the carbonara and the cappelletti. The carbonara was very good. But the cappelletti was one of the best things I've ever tasted in life. Like as soon as it touched my tongue I knew I was in for a treat. We finished off with the olive oil cake (off menu). I woke up the next day still thinking about how good that darn cake was. The homeopathic cure in Contagion, the 2011 film about a deadly worldwide virus outbreak is Forsythia, so it feels very apt that a restaurant promising delicious and nourishing pasta opened during our own real life pandemic. Knowing that this restaurant is the brainchild of folks who used to work at Rezdora and Olmsted, which are very celebrated pasta restaurants, also informed my very high hopes for this meal. I couldn't believe it when I won an Instagram contest to receive 50% off my bill, which only fueled my excitement even more to a fever pitch. I had one hit and one miss though, so I'm going to rate my experience three stars, because my meal wasn't at all disastrous, but the main event was decidedly disappointing. This restaurant was on everyone's radar in their opening weeks, so reservations were hard to come by in their tiny little backyard space but I snagged one during Saturday lunch. I love that their menu changes weekly and is very short, so it feels very thoughtfully curated week by week. Unfortunately this also means it's slim pickings for vegetarians, but the lone veggie friendly main was a cacio e pepe, and who doesn't love cacio e pepe? I did ask to see the menu ahead of my visit to make sure there was a vegetarian friendly dish for me but it seems the more flavorful sounding heirloom tomato pasta dish I was eyeing wasn't included in their shorter lunch menu. The only other party while we were there was a large party of 10 or so, so our food took a long while to come out, which is understandable given they're working with a staff of 2. When the pastas did come out though I was disheartened to find that the pasta in my cacio e pepe lacked any bite, tasted like soft overcooked egg noodles, and sat in a pool of very liquidy cacio e pepe sauce, which just slipped off the noodles and wasn't of a consistency you'd want from such a simple pasta dish. The portion was itty bitty, and the sauce had no depth of flavor to speak of. You can see in my photo with the pasta lift just how many strands of noodles there were in this dish. I feared the simplicity of this dish might mean it'd be boring, but I also hoped a kitchen with such a lauded reputation wouldn't have to lean on meat to make a dish flavorful. My dining companion enjoyed their carbonara a bit more, as the sauce had more flavor and the pasta was more al dente. The suppli I got was actually a very promising start to the meal, with a deliciously crisp exterior, and wonderfully chewy, cheesy interior. I spooned up every last bite of this appetizer, so the meal wasn't all bad. The bread they brought out was also very good bread. The quality and beauty of the plates struck me as the sort you'd find at a fine dining establishment, and so I could tell that there was thought put into the little details of the restaurant. There are always some growing pains in soft opening mode, so my experience might be an anomaly one, and an experience that future diners might not have as the restaurant ramps up, but I'm not too excited to return. read more

I've been waiting to eat here since their pop up last summer, but the timing wasn't right. Thankfully, I was able to score a reservation for their indoor counter. Their outdoor set up is really cute, but it was chilly, so we opted for indoor. The counter spot is cozy (read: tiny) but it was enough space for myself and my husband. The counter is on the kitchen side and next to the entrance, so it's a little busy, but the staff was attentive and always made sure we were ok. We chose the suppli, crudo special, agnolotti, putanesca and tajarin. Yes, the portions here are smaller, but they are meant to be shared so you can taste a little bit of everything. The suppli was decadent. If you want to fill up, get this starter because it's pretty filling. The crudo was fresh and nicely offset the suppli. Each of the pastas we got were delicious and so well prepared. The agnolotti was my husband's favorite. The filling is super tasty and wasn't heavy at all. Surprisingly, the putanesca was my favorite. I didn't expect such a bright flavor from the dish. The tajarin was good as well and rounded out our main courses. You can tell that each pasta was made with care. For dessert, we ended up getting the brioche and the panna cotta special. They also surprised us with lemon bars since we were celebrating our anniversary. The brioche was light and fluffy stuffed with chantilly cream. The star of the dessert was the panna cotta. Incredibly silky and creamy with a rhubarb compote and pistachio crumbles. It was an off menu special, but I hope they keep it on the menu! They also give you the yummiest almond cookies at the end of the meal. The service was outstanding and I regret not getting our server's name. Is it pricey? Yes, but it's worth every penny. I've been wanting to try this little gem of a spot and finally got the chance to do so last night. Tucked away between Chrystie Street and Bowery, I've easily walked past a dozen times without even noticing it. The restaurant is small but has an impressive outdoor dining area. And I mean it's true outdoor dining as in there's still an exposed wall and not fully enclosed. The heater they use is at seat level so it's actually effective. The menu itself is short but simple. Which is not a bad thing if you're you're good at what you're doing. And it seems to change every few days. Everything we had was amazing. The cacio e pepe balls was great, it was basically a fancy arancini. I thoroughly enjoyed the short rib meatball as well. My favorite pasta was the agnolotti in duck broth. What a phenomenal experience! I really wanted to try it but wasn't able to get a reservation on such short notice. BUT, thanks to Yelp, I read that they keep the bar open for walk-ins and that my best chances of getting seated were right when it opened. Sure enough, we got there ten minutes past 6 and got the last 2 seats at the very cozy bar (5 seats!). The barman was incredibly knowledgeable, if not a bit blunt and to the point (while not a conversationalist, made service efficient). The tasting menu at the bar was a course or 2 shorter than the dining room, but more affordable ($40 - and honestly I left feeling perfectly full after the bread, the 2 courses and the dessert). I got the "seasonal" items off the menu - the "Sprouting Brocolli" and the Garganelli with rabbit ragu, both were great. We went back here as the chef/owner Jacob invited us back to show us what they can do. And the place lived upto the reviews. We were seated in the main restaurant which almost has a rome/milan vibe. Narrow, long, ceiling decor and with windows that open onto the street. The service was impeccable and the staff was well versed on what is vegetarian and what is not on the menu. The bread is accompanied by homemade ricotta and seasoned butter and I would recommend not skipping it. Its soo good! Its a cross between a foccacia and a soft bread (not super chewy) and the seasoned sides give it the perfect lift. We got the prix fixe: i got the fan favorite suppli, the ciccio salad and my husband got the venison tartare and fried meatball. If you wanna ask me a standout, i dont think any. It was all so good. The ciccio dressing was umami and asian inspired and the suppli sauce was something i can eat a cup of. The meatball was almost like a pate (they said its a 48 hour braise) and the venison tartare was super balance. For the pasta i got one with the kale and gigante beans and cacio e pepe. While he got the duck ragu paparadelle and short rib agnolotti. Everything again was steller. I havnt had a better cacio e pepe in a while (it was slightly saucy and not dry). I got 2 scoops of icecream for dessert and he got the panna cotta. They were very kind to let me know that panna cotta had gelatin hence its not vegetarian. The food is consistently superb, the staff is attentive, the atmosphere is cozy, and the menu changes frequently. The restaurant recently moved to a pre-fixe menu only format, allowing you to choose 4 savory dishes and a dessert for $75. The portions are modest given the price. Highlights: the Polpetta dal Santo Polato (braised and then Fried short rib meatball) is a must. The Suppli (fried cacio e pepe risotto, mozzarella di bufala) also hits the spot. The seasonal salads are always a hit. The Agnolotti stuffed with short ribs are heavenly. The Carbonara is another favorite of mine, but is certainly rich. This was one of my favorite Italian restaurant experiences I've had so far in Manhattan! Loved the ambiance, the prefix menu choices, and of course the food! We came for the dinner prix fixe menu with 2 antipasti and 2 primi courses, and a dessert. Each course had 3 options for you to choose from. My friends and I ended up ordering the same options multiple times, but i'd definitely recommend choosing different things so you can try each dish! My impressions below: (starred is what I ordered, and the non-starred are the ones I tried) Complimentary bread: honestly, didn't expect bread to impress me this much but the texture of their bread is amazing. It has a cake-like texture and it was so delicious with their homemade ricotta as a topping! Antipasti: polpetta dal Santo Polato*: A bold start to a prix fixe menu! This is a braised short rib meatball and they are very generous with their short rib. This leaned salty for me but the meat was extremely tender and an impressive first antipasti. suppli: This is very reminiscent of an arancini to me! The cheese in this is surprisingly sharp. A great choice for mozzarella lovers! zuppa di fagioli*: I've never had anything like this dish-- it was a mushroom broth with beans and cauliflower inside. The mushroom broth was zesty and bright, a great break between the other heavy courses! Primi: agnolotti di coda alla vaccinara*: Another generous portion of short rib in this pasta! Each agnolotto was stuffed with short rib and the sauce it was served with was creamy and full of chives. spaghettone alla carbonara: Cooked very perfectly al dente and served in a very creamy carbonara sauce! My friend thought the guanciale in this dish was overdone, but YMMV fregola*: The star of the show! This dish was stuffed with clams, mussels, and sea bass. The lobster taste is very apparent in the tomato broth. Pearls are definitely the correct shape of pasta to serve with all of these toppings! At this point, we were pretty full but the brightness of this dish really made it a good finale. malloreddus: The gnocci had such a unique shape and this dish had such a strong umami-flavor that I was really impressed by! Dessert: gelato sundae: Make sure to save room for dessert! There are 3 gelato flavors in this sundae and each one really contrasted among the others. My favorite was the hazelnut at the bottom. Forsythia is a great place to eat. I came here for dinner. The ambiance was low key and chill. The service was fast and attentive. The food was fresh, delicious, and high quality. I recommend the focaccia, heirloom tomato salad, and any of the pastas. read more

HELL TO THE YES. This place met and surpassed all expectations (which were high). Not that it's a completion, but forsythia is leagues better than rezdora (another pop spot with tasting menu for pastas). They really know how to cook each pasta to perfection, and every sauce was so rich and full of flavor. You'll want to go with the fixed price menu options , you get so much bang for the buck. Also the spreads they give you with the bread were delicious. The sommelier was so nice and knowledgeable, without being pretentious. Plenty of great outdoor seating available too. Gonna come at least a few times a year from now on! read more

It took over 45 minutes for our mains to come out (do not recommend ordering a secondi). The lamb was a very small portion for over $50. The service was not great. We had to ask twice for the server to check on our main. The kicker, there is a 22% service charge at the end and they present the option to tip the server on top of that. This restaurant is heavily booked once reservations are released so I was very excited to snag one. My expectations were very high after reading so many positive reviews and seeing this place all over social media. The staff was lovely and very helpful. The food was just okay. We started with the Suppli (cacio e pepe arancini) and the Polpetti ("meatball"). The Suppli was good, but the meatball had an overwhelming vinegar flavor. We each had the tonnarelli, it seemed to be a hybrid of cacio e Pepe and carbonara. If you have high blood pressure, this is not the dish for you, as it is extremely salty. The pasta was cooked very well and perfectly al dente, but that's the only positive thing I can say about the dish. I am a huge fan of dessert, but didn't feel like sticking around for anything sweet after such a lackluster meal. The dishes are small and to be honest, I expected a bit more for the prices. I understand charging for service and quality, but it seemed a bit excessive for the portions. The pasta room was cute and open, the dining room seemed more intimate. The outdoor patio is completely enclosed, so if you're eating outside, you'll be warm (great for the colder season). Overall I expected more for $143 (they charge a 20% service fee for the staff, but you can add to this tip). Can't say that I'll be back or that I'd recommend it to friends. I have been wanting to try this place so bad! Finally got the chance to come by earlier this week. Sat at the bar and got a few pastas to share. Everything was over seasoned and just too rich. Maybe it was just the dishes we chose, but really this place didn't feel as special to me as it did to some of the reviewers here. read more

Did walk-in on a rainy Thursday evening around 6 PM and were able to be seated immediately. They have the bar section reserved for walk-ins. Restaurant has pre-fixed menus, the bar prefixed is cheaper and less extensive than reservations ($40 with 1 Less main and appetizer vs $70) I preferred less food so that worked for me! They start off with complimentary bread and olives. For apps, We got the zuppa and the suppli. Both were awesome, the soup was incredibly flavorful for how light it was. And the suppli is a fried cacio e pepe risotto ball. For entrees we got the 2 vegetarian options: Mezze (eggplant pasta) and the Culurgiones (pasta with potato filling). Both were incredible. The Mezze was a tomato based sauce, the pasta was perfectly cooked with a bit of a bite and felt very authentic /homemade. The Culurgiones was cream based and the balsamic cut through the richness of the potato filling and sauce. With the bar pre-fixed you can either get a glass of wine or a dessert so I opted for the wine. The red pairing for the evening was a Schiava which complemented the food well.
