When you step inside, it feels like you've been transported to another era - long before instagrammable was a word, before Sugar was the new big bad - back when bakeries were just a simple haven for those looking for something sweet. You will likely get overwhelmed with the million different cookies, cakes and pastries on offer. If you want help, just know that their most popular items are the cannoli, rainbow cookie, and pignoli. I only tried the rainbow cookie but I can confirm the hype is well deserved - I loved the contrast of the lemon curd with the almond paste, and since each cookie is quite small, it wasn't too sweet for me. The other pastries we tried were fine (black forest, Napoleon, chocolate and whipped cream with strawberry), but nothing to write home about. Ahead of the Easter holidays, they also have a bunch of super cute Easter cakes, although I think it might get replaced with gelato after Easter in time for the summer months. I was very excited to go to this staple bakery in Williamsburg but I have to say I was disappointed by the quality. We came on a Sunday afternoon after brunch and traffic was steady the entire time were there. We ordered Tiramisu, a strawberry sponge cake of some type, an eclair and two canollis. The Tiramisu was the most cohesive, but the flavor was very subdued, you couldn't taste any mocha. The strawberry cake was stale. The eclair was great but nothing stood out. Finally the canollis were leaning on the stale side too, the filling was tasty, but nothing stood out either. Since I was little I was convinced this place was run by the italian mafia, but to be honest I don't care what they do behind the scenes because their stuff is that good. I really can't believe I'm giving such a low rating but I have to be honest. Came in yesterday and spent over $100 on pastries and cookies for mine and my father's birthday. I got quite a lot of things and everything looked so so good ! However, there was almost nothing that tasted good and I was actually shocked. The mini cheesecakes (plain and marble) had a strange texture and taste, eclairs and tarts with presumably the same filling tasted like sweetened uncooked flour and was incredibly thick, one thing that looked beautiful was this coffee flavored cream between two cookies covered in chocolate and nuts but when we all tried it there was barely any coffee flavor and it had a weird bitter taste that almost had a slight mintiness to it, little tarts were ok but again that weird uncooked flour taste in the filling, the biggest disappointment was the cannolis which I was looking forward to since I loveeeeee cannolis. The cannoli shell was horrendous and tasted exactly like burnt fryer oil to the point that none of us could eat it and spit it out, the filling of it was ok but nothing special, we really just couldn't get over that extremely burnt oil flavor of the shell and it was nauseating. Of about 20 different things we bought, literally only 2 things were good which was this tiny square of coconut cake, and the lobster tail. I also got the rainbow cookie gelato and threw it out after 1 bite. If you get something rainbow cookie flavored you'd expect hints of almond extract and maybe apricot and/or raspberry but it tasted like extremely bland vanilla ice cream with some rainbow cookie crumbs thrown in. I really was so sad about the experience here because I've had them saved for months and was waiting until mine and my dads birthday to give them a try thinking we were going to have an amazing experience with all the rave reviews. Usually I'd give any place a second try because I know there can be off days, but 18 out of 20 things being inedible doesn't allow a second visit. read more

Good desserts, weird service My friends and I went to Fortunato for dessert after dinner. It was a strange experience. I ordered the red velvet cheesecake which was not very cheesecakey at all. The white chocolate covering was delicious though. I also got the limone ice. Delicious but a bit too sour. My friends and I ordered and they wanted to take a seat. The cashier said if you sit you need to do table service. After making my icey and me trying to take it off the counter, she pulled it back and said, "sit and we'll bring it to you". Almost 10 minutes later, we got our, already premade, desserts. One friend even went up twice, after seeing that the desserts were on a tray with nobody wanting to serve it (they were far from our grasps and he asked to take it but the server said she'd bring it and to sit down). The desserts were almost melted and lukewarm and by the time it finally got to us. When we wanted to close out, nobody came even after signaling someone. (What was the point of table service then?) After dinner and this is about 5 blocks away, I said this is worth the walk in the cold and wind to get to. This place feels like a old tradition and famous place in Brooklyn or a little known hidden gem. Coming in around 9 pm, the place is still lively with dates, friends and local. The counter is packed with amazing looking desert and cake. Not a fan of sweet at night, I went for a tea. My friends went all out for their ice cream and a too pretty to eat cake and cookie. Service is very fast. We order at the counter not knowing they do table service. Picking to sit by the window feels very nice and I hope to come on a snow day and during day time will set the perfect mood. It looks like they offer cake for all occasion. Most of the time the staff is rude and my guess is that they are related to the owners. Which has created an environment where it is ok to treat customers rudely. I witnessed a staff member speak to customer in the most disrespectful way. This man did not speak English and could not state the quantity of gelato he wanted. This girl proceeded to repeat "what size do you want?!" Looks at her co-worker and states "I don't understand what he is saying" and rolled her eyes. It was like watching a child throw a tantrum.
