Fortune House is a wonderful little restaurant tucked away in Burke. I am Asian for reference, so I know my sushi, and my friend is the sushi scientist. We received a warm greeting upon entrance, and we were immediately surprised at the selection here. There are all kinds of entrees for those who don't like raw sushi, but there's also many authentic quality sushi rolls, nigiri, and sashimi. The fatty tuna(Toro) is delectable, and well worth the price. The staff was friendly and often made conversation with us, and combined with great food, is a great dining experience. A cute little family business. Per the recommendation of someone I know, we ordered the yami yami roll as well as the samurai roll and the fuji roll. The yami yami roll is covered in mayo and is good but feels heavy. I don't think I could eat a whole roll by myself. The other two rolls were quite large and delicious. To me the cream cheese in both rolls was not very overwhelming unlike some other rolls I've had elsewhere. All in all, this was some good sushi for a great price. Take out only review. The space is no frills if you dined-in. Decor is minimal so ambiance isn't why you would come here. I've only tried the Yellowtail sashimi which was fresh and a nice cut. This place has always been on my favorite list. It's tucked away along a strip mall in Burke. Next to it is my favorite bakery (Good Harvest) it's like killing two birds with one stone! I've been coming here for at least 10 years! I've been around to too many sushi places but this place will always be my #1. The couple that run the restaurant are great with kids, they always come around checking up and chat away with the customers. These people are genuine, and if anybody knows, these days it's hard to find genuine people. I always came here with my grandparents after church or every week when I got the chance, the owners are very friendly and give the most generous portion. I would consider it a homey like spot. Almost like little sushi spots in Japan. It's affordable and authentic, I've been to Asia and this one makes me feel like I'm back at 日本 ! A lot of the customers are loyal. I selected this sushi restaurant based on the ratings and found the sushi to be OK. My biggest concern was how dirty the restaurant was which I had about an hour to observe because of how busy they were, not to mentioned I had also called the order in. They had 4 sushi chefs behind a small sushi counter which I know must have made it a difficult area to work in. I admit the staff was extremely busy and hard working but they seemed very disorganized which might account for why the attention to cleanliness detail was sorely lacking. Our tempura was inedible; the sashimi was a heap of undistinguishable raw fish that tasted like Last Week. We would NOT recommend this establishment under any circumstances. BOY, was I surprised with this little gem, nestled in the city of Burke! Fortune House is a Chinese family-owned and -operated Japanese restaurant, but DON'T let that little information deter you - the owner was trained in Japan and really knows how to offer fresh quality sushi. A couple of our friends are huge fans of this place, so we came to check it out! This place has been around for about 14 years, and the menu offers nigiri, spicy rolls, vegetable sushi, maki rolls, Chef's specials, appetizers, lunch boxes (bento), donburis, noodles, etc. The hubs and I came here for lunch, and we decided to get a couple of nigiris: Yellowtail (Hamachi), Fresh Salmon (Sake) and Surf Clam (Hokki Gal), as well as a Spicy Tuna Roll and a Spicy Scallop Roll. The nigiris were generously-sized sliced fish, and they were all fresh and buttery. The spicy rolls were unbelievable, as they had a lovely ratio of the mayo, while not masking the tuna and the scallop (both were delicious); I was surprised at the generous heaping amount of extra 'fillings' on top! :O We also ordered a lunch box (bento; we opted for a a tempura & chicken teriyaki combo - this was okay (loved the crispy shrimp tempura and the onion ring, and the addition of the fried tofu with the sweet teriyaki sauce), but I highly suggest in sticking with the offerings from the sushi bar. I was a little sad that they did not have any Toro (my absolute favorite), but I'll try to grab that next time :D Our server, Ms. Lan, was such a sweetheart, and we had a total blast, just laughing it up and having a great time. The owner wasn't present, but the second-in-command, Sushi Chef Hua, really served up a great platter (I can only imagine how good the owner's sushi preparation will be, considering that Chef Hua was so awesome) - Chef Hua was very serious with his sushi and it shows! The nice grandmother, Ms. Xie, was making sure our waters were filled, and she took turns with Ms. Lan in terms of bringing out our orders. Seriously? 4.5 stars? I wonder if any of these "reviewers" are real. Most of the reviewers only have 2-4 reviews, so if you want to trust them, you go on ahead, but I regret having done so. The sushi is OKAY. It's not as fresh as people purport it to be. The rice was even a bit stale by 4-5 star sushi restaurant standards. They were out of Fatty Tuna, so I opted for the regular, and it was adequate. I would even say good, but definitely not the freshest I'd ever had. The 007 roll was good, but nothing memorable, and same goes for the crunchy and spicy yellowtail and spicy california rolls. For being 4.5 stars, I was hoping for a super saweet deal, and super delicious sushi. Also, the sushi seems like it's cheap, but it's really not. For my nigiri, I thought $2.50 was a great deal, until I realized it's only for one piece, and not the standard two. The size was not a huge one, about par for the course, but remember you're only paying for one, so not a great deal. Stick to the rolls, which are good, not great. This place might be considered a "dive" by some. I'm not sure that's the appropriate word. The bathrooms are disgusting (on par with gas station bathrooms). The portions are only okay. I didn't order any menu items, though I must admit the fried rice that someone ordered at the table adjacent to mine did look good. Does it not bother you that the place is called Fortune House? I imagine a chinese restaurant, not sushi, but that could just be me being a bigot. Wonderful. My first time here, and the start of many. Had the sashimi & tempura "lunch box". It was delicious, and enormous. It came with: Miso soup Fried tofu (2 pieces) A generous portion of salad in ginger dressing About five large pieces of tempura, including fish & veggies An enormous amount of sashimi 3 pieces of California roll A huge side of rice. Plastic all over the place in the fridgerated place were they keep the fish... Over cooked rice... And the service is just ok... The sushi chef was nice... But not nice enough to make better sushi... Plus I think the Chinese... Would would make sense that their sushi is so bad... Oh and the wasbi was not strong at all... I won't be returning to say the least... So sad :-( read more

**3.5 stars** I've lived in the Springfield/Burke area my whole life and have passed by this shopping center multiple times without giving much thought to any of the merchants other than the large Walmart. Upon searching for a place close to home for a family dinner I was genuinely surprised to discover such a highly rated sushi restaurant that's been in my backyard this whole time. The staff at Fortune House was all incredibly friendly and welcoming, the sushi chef even personally checked in with us at our table to see how we liked the food. My parents ordered the salmon teriyaki box ($17.95) which although was tasty, I cannot justify such a high price for very small portions of food (see photo). I had the chirashi sushi ($17.95) and was pleased by the amount of fish received and the box had much more depth than the eye could see. It was not the most mouth-watering slabs of sashimi I've ever eaten but it was more than edible and satisfying. Both orders came with a bland miso soup but this was easily validated with the house salad which had a delicious peanut dressing that I found myself slurping clean. Overall, Fortune House didn't have the most memorable or out-of-this world food but I'm glad to know there's a quality sushi restaurant in my area and it will definitely become a staple option when I don't feel like driving all the way to DC or Mclean. read more

I was in the mood for sushi but lazy about driving outside the burbs. Located only three miles away I ordered Crunchy Spicy Shrimp, Fortune House Roll, Alaska Roll at Fortune House. All of the tables were full on a Friday evening. We received our rolls about 15-20 minutes after ordering. The Alaska Roll was my favorite with real crab meat, smoke salmon, avocado, and fish eggs. The sushi was good but not the best I've ever had. The service was friendly but a bit slow when it came to pay the bill. Its a convenient option for Sushi in Burke. read more

I love this place. I live within walking distance and every time I come in chef asks why I dont come more often. Based off what I order, he frequently makes suggestions to things I may enjoy. Everything is always super fresh tasting. I usually get the basic crab roll but I've also had the crunchy spicy shrimp roll and the shrimp tempura roll. All of them are delicious. I have tried uni, but that is not for me. Next time I'll try the eel. Also, The SHRIMP TEMPURA is out of this world! I could eat it alll day every day. Sometimes thats all I order. I think there's only 4 to an order and I can eat 8. So my fiance and I usually get 4 orders if that's what's for dinner. It's light and super crispy. Just delicious, that's all, I dont even have any words for it. I go silent when I eat it so I can enjoy every last taste. Conversation can continue when I'm completely done! Haha. Fortune House Restaurant has the look and feel of a family run restaurant that I experienced when I lived in northern Japan. The staff and chefs are friendly and informal, and if you are a regular, everyone greets you with a synchronized cheer. Most importantly, they serve up delicious sushi and sashimi combination meals. The meals include a tasty miso soup and a salad with a wonderful peanut ginger dressing preceding the sushi and sashimi, which are very good and generously sliced. The restaurant also lists Teriyaki, Katsu, Shioyaki, Don Buri, Sukiyaki, Fried Rice, Yakisoba, and Ramen on the menu. I have not tried the other items except for the ramen and that was mediocre. Now I only go with what I know and love--the sushi and sashimi! The prices before 3 pm for sushi or sashimi combinations start at $12.50, while dinner prices start at $15.95. My wife, kid, and I were excited about this place because we saw the great reviews and hype foodies gave them a shout out. We walked in about 2:30 on a Sunday. We were the only customers there. There were two guys behind the sushi bar, one waitress, and an older lady there who may be the owner I'm not sure. None of them said a word to us when we walked in. My wife asked the waitress where the restroom was and she was ignored. She found the restroom herself and while I was waiting for her no one said a word to me or gave me a menu even though the older lady walked past us with a menu in hand but then just set it down on the sushi bar and paid us no mind. After sitting there for a while knowing that there are no other customers there with four employees on duty and none of them looking my way or saying a word to me I knew that I was not welcome.
