I've been here a couple times and the first time I tried it I loved it but with each visit the place got worse I think it's very unsanitary there was a lipstick stain on the glass of water meaning they probably don't wash dishes well that really grossed me out and the sushi was good they have good flavors but it's not the freshest my biggest problem was the shrimp wasn't cleaned properly and when I saw that I felt sick to my stomach and will not be going their again. I really hope they work on cleanliness it's a great place but I don't think they care anymore. read more

It's been a couple of years since my first visit to Fortune House, so even though I didn't have the best experience the first time I dined here, I figured it was only fair to give it another try. I was pleasantly surprised! Some of the same problems still persist (the sashimi is cut really weird, but at least tasted fresh) but the service was a big improvement - still a little brusque at first, but quick and efficient enough, and the sushi was tasty! We got the Fortune Roll, Spicy Scallop Roll, Super Salmon Roll, and a regular salmon roll, as well as some sashimi. The Fortune and Spicy Scallop rolls were my favorites, but everything tasted very good. We also got their dessert roll, which came with mango, pineapple, cream cheese, crab stick, and rolled in coconut flakes with coconut cream sauce. It reminded me of a mango sticky rice sushi roll, which meant it was pretty awesome. Really heavy on the cream cheese though - I might recommend using a little bit less since its perfectly good with just the fruit honestly! I'm glad I gave Fortune House another try, especially since it's so conveniently located to my fiance's house. It doesn't rank at the absolute top of my sushi place preferences, but it's definitely a perfectly good place to grab a sushiriffic bite. read more

So, my kid loves sushi. We have a sushi date once a week. It gets pretty inconvenient for me so I try to find a place close to wherever we are. For being the only sushi place (that I know of) in Burke, it's good enough to stop in to get your quick fix. But if you're looking for a new spot, and you live more than 10 minutes from this place, don't waste your time. The sushi chefs look like they want to kill themselves, and there's only one lady last night that was waiting on the tables. You don't get miso or salad with your meal.. a big boo for me. The rolls are sloppy and too big and mushy. The spicy tuna is mixed with way too much Japanese spicy mayo. It seems to be a big hit with the locals though, there were a lot of people having dinner and they all seem to know the sushi chef and waiter by name. I'll pass though. read more

Thanks Yelpers - I had business in the area and was looking for an excellent lunch spot. I would never have chosen this nondescript looking restaurant in a Walmart anchored shopping center (and a name that reaks of Chinese carry-out)... but the reviews persuaded me otherwise. Wise decision. The ambiance and decor is rather bland. Old school tables and chairs and very little in the way of decoration. But the food, service and value delivers. I had the Sashimi and Tempura lunch box along with some tea. Presentation was solid and the portions are generous for the price ($11.95 as I recall). Quite tasty! I don't find myself in Burke very often but if I did I would often find me here. Do you come here often? If so, you should be here now. Very-Burkeworthy. read more

I just went to the Fortune House for the first time yesterday. Can I please just say... thank God it's up the street from where I live. I just moved to the Burke area, so I'm still trying stuff out and finding new places.. and I'm so glad I stumbled across this one. The sushi here was fresh and delicious. And I although the small restaurant was packed with people, the sushi chef was extremely pleasant and fast with my to-go order. And the spicy tuna roll was actually spicy for once in my life. Also, the eel, yumi yumi roll, and the dynamite roll are orgasmic. Yeah. I said that. I'll probably stop by here at least once every week :) read more

Take this for what it is, a sushi house in the suburbs. In fact, Fortune House is the ONLY sushi place in Burke, and boy am I greatful! I had difficulty finding this place, as it is right next to a furniture store and other hole in the wall shops in the always overly crowded can't find parking Wal*Mart shopping center. The sushi here is FRESH, not something I can say for many of the places I've been to in Chinatown, DC. The price is a bit expensive, BUT this place does not dissapoint, and you always get decent portions. If you are not in the mood for sushi, they have excellent lunch and dinner boxes that are always so full-filling that I can say, in my minimum of a dozen visits to this place, I have not once finished in one sitting. These boxes come with a simple, yet delicious garden salad with the absolute YUMMIEST peanut sauce dressing. They also have an AMAZING dragon roll, yami yami roll, both are cooked sushi with eel and just about everything else you can imagine. Yes, this place isn't the cheapest sushi joint around, BUT take into consideration what you're getting, and were it's located. It's worth a trip there, and its DEFINITELY worth ordering some of the non traditional sushi fixings on the list. Generally, these are more expensive, but definitely, definitely, worth it. Owner seems friendly so I feel a little bad about the rating but the cuts of nigiri were very poorly done. No consistency in the size and several completely in grain??? Well, we gave it a shot. It was just, eh, OK. Let me start with all the positives - the staff was super friendly and talkative. It seemed to be a neighborhood joint and people kept coming in that were obviously regulars. It was quiet and clean. The food was good, no bad tastes or flavors. Why I'm taking off stars- 1. My seaweed salad had a huge frozen clump of part ice, part seaweed in it and was filled with cucumbers at the bottom, making it only 1/2 seaweed and it was $6.50, a bit much for half cucumbers. 2. We really like our sushi, the special rolls are why we go back to sushi joints. Our favorite is Shiki Sushi in the Ballston Common Mall. I was not impressed with the sushi menu at Fortune House. It didn't satisfy my craving for some huge, piled up with goodness-roll. 3. I got the Alaskan roll, I thought it was pricey for the portion that came out, I don't mean roll count, I mean girth. So, all in all, nice place but with at least 3 other favorite sushi places on our list, this one probably won't be re-visited. read more

I have been going to Fortune House for about two years now. I eat there two to three times a week and I have to say there isn't a place I have found in the country that can touch it. Let me explain. To me, when I eat food, all that matters is the quality and taste. I don't care about plating, the decor, anything. If you're looking for great plating, nice plates, amazing decorations, fancy settings, this is not the place for you. But if you're looking for a place that can NOT be beat on taste, look no further. The spicy rolls are unlike anything I have ever had. He won't tell me the secret either, which makes me angry because I just moved to Boston and I can't find anybody to make them like he does. It's one of the main reasons I want to go home and visit my parents. Their 007 roll with tuna substituted for shrimp is the best thing on their menu. Try it. Nigiri sushi pieces are huge compared to everywhere else. His rolls are filled with very generous portions of fish and did I mention he gets fish deliveries everyday? Rolls to try: Spicy California, 007 Roll with Tuna instead of Shrimp (Special Order) +$2 [I think], or ask for Phil's special fried roll. He puts Tuna, Avacado, Eel, Cream cheese inside a roll, and fries it like tempura. Then outside he puts eel sauce, japanese mayo and masago/tobiko. read more

This is a wonderful family owned and run joint. It's a bit campy/dive bar ish inside, but who cares about the decor when the food is this good? If you're looking for "aesthetically perfect" sushi (i.e. dimensions a certain size, cuts at a certain angle), this isn't the place for you. If you're looking for very very fresh food, generous portions, and Sushi chefs that remember you and are friendly, then this IS the place you want to go. The shrimp tempura rolls here are amazing, the 007 and dragon rolls are pretty good too. The husband and wife who run the place have both worked at Cafe Asia, and both lived in Japan for a number of years. They aren't traditional Japanese but who really cares? Chuck Norris is American but that doesn't mean he can't put his foot through your head. You won't regret spending your time and money in this hidden little gem. read more

Ah, the Fortune House. Where to begin? I have been a crazed sushi supporter as far back as I can remember. I am always looking for places that offer amazing food, and sushi is always a front-runner on my list. I was turned on to this hole in the wall by a good friend of mine a little over a year ago. I have lived in the Springfield/Burke area for much of my life, and like many people, a few places still seem to elude me. A small Mom & Pop type restaurant, this place is easy to miss. Ever since my first sit down at Fortune House, I have been impressed with the quality of the sushi. Sure, the service isn't the best, in terms of attentiveness, but once you receive your meal, all is forgiven. The sushi chefs are extremely polite, and are all business when it comes to their craft. I could write a novel on everything I love about this place, but I'll spare you the trivialities. Bottom line: This place is a hidden gem. If you enjoy a relaxing, serene meal away from the chaos from time to time, give the Fortune House a try. I sure as hell didn't regret it, and I'm confident you won't, either. read more

Should be called un-fortunate house. Had a really bad experience here last night. Ordered a couple rolls from their sassy (only) waitress. My Alaska roll came with fully cooked salmon - dry as a stone. When my fiance asked about it - the sushi chef pointed to a TOASTER OVEN next to him and said he had cooked it there. Umm.... say what?! I'm pretty sure that's not how you make smoked salmon. The spicy crunchy tuna roll was so unappetizing looking, we didn't even have a bite. Not to mention even after we sent all our food back - they still charged us for everything and then gave me sass when I asked for some of it to be taken off our check. He said since it was exactly as listed on the menu, that I needed to pay for it. That is not how you treat your customers - especially first timers. Needless to say, we won't be back! read more

Don't let the generic name put you off, this place is a great little mom and pop sushi spot, right in the Wal-Mart shopping center off of Burke Center Parkway. There is very little in the way of sushi restaurants in the Burke area, so I was pleased to find one that offers fresh, quality sushi at very reasonable prices. The interior atmosphere is kinda divey, and the attitude of the owners is very much a casual affair--if you are looking for royal treatment, you may be put off, you'll be treated like family here. "Oh, hi. Go sit over there." This is a small family owned business and the mom and pop--Lan and Tang--are very nice people who serve as owners, sushi chef, waitress, cashier, cleaning staff and dishwasher. While it might not be the best spot for a date night, it's great for carry out. Also, they will make any type of roll you can dream up. A definite great find. read more

Overview/food: This is a great little sushi place that always gives me enough food for the right price. Those worried about price and portion should have no fear as I routinely buy 3 rolls (20 pieces split 6, 6, 8) for under $20 and it is more than satisfying. My taste is not too exotic as I normally favor the spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and either the crunchy roll or shrimp tempura roll, but all are enjoyable. My parents swear by the sushi boxes which are equally delicious, although I can't remember exactly what they come with I know a California roll, tempura pieces, and sashimi are included. Service: This is a family owned establishment and the wait staff is limited to one (sometimes two depending on the time of day), so you might feel neglected sometimes. I remember having to ask for a water refill only once or twice out of the dozens of times I have been there. I feel like because they are family owned there is more love in the food and service, and every time I stop in for takeout the wife admonishes me for not calling ahead as she doesn't want to see me wasting time. I think they use a little bit more love in the food than most places. I also appreciate the greetings as you walk in to the restaurant. Environment: Cozy (I guess small if you don't like the place). There is a sushi bar with about 6 or 7 seats, and about 3 booths and 7 or 8 tables. Additional: Most enjoyable (to a guy who likes big portions like me) is the fact that they throw extra spicy tuna/salmon on top of the roll. I haven't seen any other place do this (and I frequent sushi places as often as I can), and makes the meal definitely worth the money. read more

I must have eaten here 30+ times In 2009, after I first discovered it with a group of friends. At first glance, being located in a less-often-frequented shopping center and having little exterior decoration, Fortune House may be easily passed over. But make no mistake, what it lacks in decor, it more than makes up for in food quality! Two years ago, I moved to Albany. Every time I was back in town I made sure to visit this place. Last year I moved to Richmond, and I still continue to visit whenever i'm in town. The owners will remember you after only a few visits, and always have kind words to say. Aside from having a friendly atmosphere, as I said earlier, the food is great. Actually, its consistently great. The rolls range from $6-12; and my favorite is the Spicy Tuna for $6. Often, they'll even pile on a load of extra spicy tuna on the top of the roll just because they're nice like that. I lived in Fairfax Station for over a year, and i'm from Fredericksburg. That being said, i've yet to find a better sushi place for a better value in the NOVA area. I love this place, and i'm sure you will too! read more

My girl friend and I absolutely LOVE this place. We started going here during the summer and average at least one to two visits a month. I didn't like sushi very much in the past, but since I've been coming here, I'm hooked! That's not to say that the sushi only satisfies amateur eaters. My girl friend is a sushi buff and she hasn't been back to her favorite sushi house since we came across this gem. The sushi chefs are really nice and know us pretty well by now. The sushi is always fresh and VERY tasty. Some of our favorites include, but aren't limited to... 007 Roll, Shrimp Tempura, spicy salmon, and Alaska Roll. I had one of their dinner plates once, instead of sushi and it was about average as far as taste. The portion size was huge. I consider myself a big eater, and I could only finished about half of it. If you live in or near Burke and enjoy sushi, you have to give this place a try... It's AWESOME! read more

I'm giving Fortune House a very friendly 3 stars. They didn't necessarily "lose" any stars for anything in particular, it was more that they just didn't do anything to really set themselves apart all that much from any decent sushi place. Just a few points of clarification... regarding a previous reviewer... The owner is Chinese. The food is Japanese. The owner worked in Tokyo previously. "Wahhh 'Fortune House' sounds like a Chinese restaurant!" Why, because it has the word "fortune" in it? Find something legitimate to complain about. Like world hunger. My girlfriend (at the time) and I each got the sashimi box. It came with shrimp tempura, veggie tempura, tofu tempura, two gyoza dumplings, steamed rice, a California roll, and of course, sashimi. Three decent slices each of yellowtail, salmon, tuna, and octopus. The sashimi was fresh and tasty and nicely portioned. I didn't eat the octopus, mostly because I just find it bland and lacking of the soft and melty texture that I love in other fish. We came in for dinner pretty late (9:00p) so we were the last table of the night. They had an extra spicy tuna roll leftover from earlier when I guess they had made the wrong thing for a customer, and they were kind enough to offer to give us the spicy tuna roll in place of one of our California rolls at no additional cost. I was all too happy to accept their offer. Free upgrade! Bonus points for Fortune House! The spicy tuna was pretty good, and I'm typically a purist when it comes to raw fish (fish + wasabi + soy sauce... and nothing else). The tempura wasn't so great. Might not be their fault - I think I'm just not a huge fan of tempura. The tofu tempura was the best of the three tempuras. The gyoza was fine. We started eating sort of quickly because we felt kinda bad about coming in at 9:00p. They had turned off the neon "OPEN" sign a few minutes after we came in. However, our server was very kind. I guess she noticed our anxiety and so she came over and said, "Please, take your time. Enjoy." That reassurance was really thoughtful. Yes the restaurant was closing, but then the whole family (presumably the owner's family) came in and had dinner together in the back of the restaurant. Which was kinda cute, if butch dudes like me are allowed to use the word cute without losing any bro points (I'm at like -17!). We finished our meal and paid our bill, and on the way out the whole family, mid-meal, waived to us and said goodnight. Now THAT'S what I call a happy ending! As a sushi-lover, this has become my go-to sushi place (well, at least this is the best for its vicinity and quality). As far the food goes, it's very decent. It pretty much always hits the spot for my sushi cravings. I always get the crunchy spicy salmon roll; it's become a hit amongst all of the people I've recommended it to as well. If you're going for lunch, I do highly recommend getting the sushi lunch box. It's super filling and a great bang for your buck ($11-$12). It comes with a few fried items, tofu, a small salad with peanut vinaigrette, miso soup, 3 california roll pieces, and a roll of your choice. If I come on an empty stomach, I can only sometimes barely finish this one. So worth it! The food and ambiance would be ~4 stars, but the owners are just so kind :) I love coming here because they're always welcoming and bubbly. Usually the woman, Lan, is the only server, yet she is rather attentive. In short, I love this place. Definitely give it a try if you live in the area! read more
