We totally understood and proceeded to ask if we could put our name on the waitlist to be seated. She then said that we could not be put on the waitlist because we were late for our reservation. I am only giving it 3 stars because the atmosphere was pretty nice but the food was the most disgusting thing I have ever tasted. I ordered the buffalo chicken bites.. Okay these smelled delish when they were served under my nose but they tasted horrible. I don't even know how to describe the taste to those wings! They tasted like plastic to me and as soon as the tip of a wing touched my tongue, it made me want to hurl. I hope that's not the case for the other food items... Maybe the sauce used was outdated?? I was pleasantly surprised by the food here. I had a portobello muchroom & goat cheese wrap - and it was just as expected. My boyfriend had the beef dip and said it was the best he's ever had! Only comment is around seating on the patio - we approached and asked for a table for 2 on the patio, and the hostess simply said they didn't have any space. The Fox and Fiddle is in an awkward location downtown. It's a two-storey pub complex with two main bars on each floor, multiple TVs showing sports (as you'd imagine) and a full run of taps larger than most pubs in Toronto. What makes it awkward is that it's found at the base of John Street just past all of the hip and chic restaurants and nightclubs and stands out a bit because of it. I guess the saving grace is that it finds itself across the street from Hooters (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/hooters-restaurant-toronto) if that can act as a bit of a transition. It looks and feels like a British Pub and has a decent downstairs patio somewhat but not quite entirely guarded from the bustle of John Street. The upstairs patio is a patio but more often than not, used as a smoking area. The pub runs a series of specials every night of the week with the pinnacle being the Sunday night that offers not only live comedy at 10:00pm every Sunday night (for the insomniacs, students, and unemployable among us) but also $10 pitchers of domestic draft and half-price wings. The wings are battered and if you enjoy the spicier side of life, you'll find the suicide sauce is not just hot but actually tasty. I'm glad to see the kitchen opted for flavour over fire. I honestly, can't understand how this restaurant has such low ratings, I was in the area for a meeting and met here for a drink and a quick bite. Granted I was here during a slow time (early/mid-afternoon) but the service and quality of the food and beverage here was surprisingly top notch. From the outside the Fox on John street looks far bigger with its seamless connection to adjoining restaurant FIGO. However, it's no bigger than a good sized pub, with a long bar in the middle and fair amount of seating. Sitting at the bar I ordered a cocktail (a Negroni) which was executed perfectly in both taste and presentation, something I wasn't really expecting from a small chain such as the Fox. It was at the level you would expect from a trendy cocktail bar here in the city. Well into the cocktail I got hungry and perused the menu for something to eat. It's a fairly diverse menu (with options from traditional english fare to Italian, Indian, and even Asian) so if you're indecisive be fair warned they don't make it too easy for you. I eventually settled on the Rib-eye and chips, once again going in with tempered expectations, because, we all know how well most pubs and restaurants do with steaks.... I am happy to report that the 14oz boneless ribeye that came to greet me was more surprising than the cocktail that had preceded it. A heafty, 1-2 inch thick ribeye, well marbled and cooked throughout to a perfect medium rare. The quality of the meat was exceptional and after finishing it I cansafely safe this ranked only a small step down from some of the areas better steak houses but far better than any restaurant/bar/gastropub I've been to and leagues better than any chain out there (even better than Canyon Creek). Also worth mentioning, the chips (french fries) were hot and crispy with soft fluffy center and were flavoured nice and lite in a medley of herbs and spices. This place has good beginnings but really isn't a destination anymore. The food is awful, portions are weak and prices are high. The patio is nice and big and shady, but we haven't ever had anything good here. The onion rings contained no onions and were hard little rings of over fried dough. Burger was cooked to death. They overcharged for my drink and I had to correct them. Wish they'd care more or replace the entire kitchen staff. read more

The decor was warm and cozy, the food was hot and fresh, the service was great, and the prices were decent. I went for brunch on a Sunday morning and was pleasantly surprised. We had deep fried chicken and a typical breakfast fare (eggs and bacon and toast). They have tater tots!! The plate was a bit on the greasy side but tater tots! Everything came out perfectly, in a reasonable amount of time, and it was just really nice. I see the other bad reviews but honestly I didn't experience any of that. If I had the time to take a look at the reviews of this restaurant I would not have eaten here for dinner on a Sunday night. This place was chosen by one other person in our group during our stay in Toronto for Labor Day weekend. As my boyfriend, sister, and my sister's boyfriend arrived we were seated in the same section at a separate table as our group. Our waitress was nice as she took our orders and even made suggestions on what to order. My table waited for our food and observed the other waiters as they brought out dishes to the other tables. We couldn't help but notice that every time someone brought out a different plate, they either looked confused and asked another worker which table the dish was suppose to go to or walked to a table only to bring the food back to ask another worker where it was suppose to go. And it wasn't one waiter that looked like they were being trained on the first day of the job. There were three workers (two males and one female) who all brought out food and looked confused. This worried us a bit but we decided to put it aside. When we saw one of the waiters bring out a plate that my table assumed was ours we watched as he walked towards us, stopped at our table, and faced away to not only ask our waitress (who was taking orders of the table next to us) which table this dish was for BUT also slapped the waitress's butt multiple times as if he was trying to bounce a basketball. The waitress just laughed and pointed behind her towards us and said that the dish belonged to our table. It didn't stop there. When my sister received her plate of Honey Sriracha wings she immediately noticed that her dish smelled like dried saliva. We smelled her dish and noticed that her wings smelled fine but it was her plate that smelled as if it had not been washed thoroughly and that a dog had licked the plate clean. There was also another incident where I leaned forward to get a bite of my fish & chips and one of the male waiters walked by and swiftly grabbed one of the empty water glasses that was placed close to my plate and had almost hit me in the face. He didn't even say excuse me and swiftly walked away. I understand there was a huge party that they had to wait, however the ill mannerisms was unacceptable. This place was truly worse than any other restaurant I have ever been to and I only wish I had looked on yelp for their reviews prior to stepping foot in the restaurant. As we left the restaurant I saw a group of three people standing outside debating if they should eat at this restaurant. We sat on the beautiful patio and were told there is more to come in terms of furniture; people watching commenced. Ordered drinks and apps and everything was delicious! Highly recommend the Cheddar Cauliflower and the Beet Salad. Started to rain so we shuffled inside and spent the rest of our night there. Has a great vibe and beautiful decor. I can't comment on the food at this location but I ordered two mojitos which I enjoyed. Honestly I was kind of scared to even look at the food because I've been to another location and the food was just completely horrible and tasteless. The service here was really nice, though. The waiter (whose name I wish I got), was very outgoing, energetic, and made great recommendations for drinks. I don't think this would be my first choice to go but if I were in the area I would definitely come back for drinks. read more

I'm surprised to see so many negative reviews. To be fair, we sat at the bar and only ordered drinks and dessert. But our experience was wonderful. We came in Saturday night and were seated immediately at the bar. I ordered a Molson and the hubs got a cider. The bartender wasn't super outgoing, but she appeared new (reading recipes from a book), so I think she was just trying to stay out of the weeds and learn, as opposed to being rude. We followed up with some mixed drinks and were happy to see the variety of liquor available, including Tito's vodka (my fav!). We ordered an apple crumble. OMFG was it good! Walked into the F&F one cold evening with Bryan G and his partner Geoff F. Upon entering, I was immediately taken by a) their incredible warmth (the pub's not Bryan and Geoff) and b) the aroma of something we could not define. Was it like the inside of a head shop or a gentlemen's club? Organic, kind of floral, but kind of spicy too. It wasn't offensive but we actually sat upstairs to soften the blow of this mystery smell, and where -- it was promised -- it would be even warmer. Right they were. It was hot as a crotch up there. We ordered up some pints and at the server's reco grabbed a pound of pineapple and curry wings. I was dubious about the Guinness, but no one ever pours it right. We had all finished our meal and my son still wasn't served. Asked 3 different people to check with the waiter. Mac and cheese can out finally not cooked. What a great discovery for a saturday night! Just beside the Scotiabank Theatre, lies this average pub. It has everything you expect from your average pub: cheap greasy food, cheap drinks, hockey games on the TV and an unexpected clean and decent washroom. Their drinks are well served (I've seen pubs serving the smallest doses of vodka you can imagine) and don't forget to indulge yourself and ask for the DEEP FUDGE CHOCOLATE BROWNIE. This place just reopened, now in a brand new building. Went there today to check it out and was quite happy. Italian house wine was 5 dollars a glass, the food was really nice too and arrived very quickly. I particularly liked the tomato and basil soup. Staff was really pleasant and attentive. Venue looks good, lots of comfortable seats, there's a great "library" area at the back that looks really nice. I'll definitely go back, especially if they keep up the 5 dollar wine. My husband, three-year-old son and I stopped here for dinner on a Friday after work in late summer. We have encountered restaurants before that don't have a kid's menu, but we have never encountered a pub that was so unwilling to try to help us find something for our toddler to eat. Since there wasn't much on the menu that would have been appealing to our son, I asked if they might be able to make a smaller portion of the macaroni and cheese. The server said abruptly, "the mac and cheese IS already small". I then asked if perhaps we could order a grilled chicken breast . . . nope, not an option. My son ended up sharing my husband's chicken wings, which in the end was fine. We just usually find that restaurants are usually more than willing to help us find something for our son to eat if there isn't a kid's menu. As for the food, it was decent. This will possibly be the fanciest Fox & The Fiddle you will ever walk into. Just opened this year, in the summer it features luxurious outdoor couches and heating lamps. You can also slip inside to get nice seating next to a gas fireplace and bookshelves. Keeping with the theme, the bill comes in a cute book. And with the fancier pub and location, come the typical prices and Toronto fare. While drinks are more reasonable with booze (beer/wine) ranging from 6-8$ and the meals will eat your wallet more with dishes costing around 14-24$. The service depends on the waiter, but they are pretty attentive and usually fairly friendly. So how was the food? Bleck... Each visit I've been left feeling regret. Most dishes have a theme of being immensely deep fried and drowning in sauce (my poor perogies!) The desserts are huge portions and could probably satisfy 3 people thoroughly. This may be a fancier looking pub but the food remains the same as any cheap one. Salads and appetizers are alright enough. I'd recommend this as a great place as a snack and drink spot before a game, but otherwise maybe skip dinner. read more
