The dough is soft and crispy and bbq on pizza is delicious, since I walked in there was something that was odd. The girl with the blue hair seemed like she hated her job. Frankie's is the kind of multi-purpose, family-friendly eatery that would be hard to begrudge since its presence in the heart of Mendocino is a much-needed salve for any tribe in need of a gathering point. I'm not sure if it's the only place in town you can get an ice cream cone or a slice of pizza or an organic falafel or a Red Tail Ale, but I'm close to positive that it's the only place where you can get all four if you want to so indulge. The fact that the youthful staff has to handle such a variety of menu items most certainly prolongs the waiting time in the queue for service. Jamie W. and I ended up waiting about fifteen minutes to order some ice cream. The lure is that they serve Cowlick's from Fort Bragg, the high quality of which we were already quite familiar. I had a $4.50 double scoop of Coffee and Peanut Butter Chocolate (see photo), which hit the spot as we relaxed on the adjacent open terrace. Kids and dogs were running around us in helter-skelter fashion, but that was to be expected. So if you need a no-frills place to silence a grumble, wet a whistle, or satisfy a sweet tooth in Mendocino, Frankie's should do it for you. So, let me just start out by saying the pizza was very good! The crust was a thin crust but still a good combination of crispy and and doughy. Where there should have been some additional seating on the side of the kitchen, there was set up the Friday night "entertainment." It was a local folk singer, who, I will admit, had a very lovely voice. However, the songs she was singing were a little bit on the down trodden side-I mean there was mention of chain gangs, and 38 specials??? I mean there were kids in the place and it's Friday night. Can we liven it up just a little bit? Then out of nowhere, some other dude appears with a banjo and the folk party really begins. They do serve the Cowlick's ice cream, but have limited flavors compared to the main location in Fort Bragg. Also there were just a lot of little kids running around unsupervised in a very tiny area. Overall it kind of made for a frantic dinner. I can see getting this pizza again if I am in the area, but probably only as take out.
